THAT FREDDY PERALTA PREDICTION GAINING TRACTION

You wouldn’t hear the Yankees media name-dropped in every starting pitcher rumor under the sun if the Yankees actually treated starting pitching like a necessity and not a casual suggestion. 

Yes, they went out and got Max Fried—and credit where it’s due, he’s been excellent. But the man’s not a Marvel superhero. He can’t throw every game, cook postgame spreads, and heal the bullpen’s collective ERA with a wave of his glove.

Carlos Rodón? He's shown signs of life lately—flashes of the guy they thought they were getting last year, not the ghost of injured lefties past. But let’s be real: Gerrit Cole’s injury in 2024 should have been a bright, blinking neon sign that said, “Hey, maybe we should plan for more than hope.” Did they sign a second top-tier insurance policy? Nope. Once again, the Yankees front office did their best impression of a shrug emoji.

And here we are, clinging to first place by a fingernail while trending toward .500 baseball. That’s not how you “Bronx Bomb” your way into October, brother.

Now comes the latest buzz: the Yankees might make a move for a Brewers starter—specifically Freddy Peralta. Yes, that Freddy Peralta. The one with a 2.18 ERA over eight starts, one of which was against the Yankees themselves. During that game, former Yankee and current crystal ball enthusiast Cameron Maybin predicted—back in March—that New York would try to land Peralta by the deadline. The man might need a hotline to Brian Cashman.

Maybin’s prediction is getting more attention now, and rightfully so. Peralta has been shoving in the NL, and the Yankees? Well, they’ve got problems. Gerrit Cole is recovering from Tommy John surgery, Luis Gil is MIA until at least late June, and Marcus Stroman is on the IL with mysterious knee “stuff”—whatever that means. It sounds like something out of a Scooby-Doo episode.

And again, Rodón’s been solid recently, but that’s a small sample. Will Warren has a win and a 5.65 ERA in seven starts—not awful if this were spring training, but the Yankees aren’t playing the Syracuse Orange.

Oh, and in case you missed it, they designated Carlos Carrasco for assignment. So as of now, there isn’t a true fifth starter. Just vibes.

And so the question is, would the Yankees get a guy like Freddy Peralta? Only Cameron Maybin knows, I guess.  We shall wait and see.

A HILARIOUS JUAN SOTO PREDICTION THAT HAS BYB LAUGHING OUT LOUD!

Quick, someone check on Harold Reynolds because I think he has lost ALL of his marbles! A recent appearance on MLB Network has so many of us scratching our heads. He's got some interesting opinions lately and some of them are just crazy and illogical.

Look, everyone has the right to their opinions....no matter how crazy they may be. Reynolds has a really crazy one. Here the thing though, he has the right to be wrong in his opinions and people like me and other experts also have the right to tell Reynolds he's just wrong. In case you missed it, Reynolds thinks Juan Soto has a better chance of signing with the Toronto Blue Jays than coming back to the Yankees.

Cameron Maybin and Gary Sheffield Jr have logic behind their stance, but Reynolds is so far out in left field that you can't make it make sense. I'm not naive to think the only chances to sign Soto are one of the two New York teams. There are other suitors out there and yes money talks but if the Blue Jays and Yankees offers are close together WHY would Soto choose the Blue Jays? They finished in last place in the AL East and have not been as competitive as they thought they would be in a long time. The Yankees are the American League champions.... just what does Harold think the Jays have to offer that is better than the Yankees? Maybe he didn't watch enough baseball this year.

I know the Blue Jays have been trying to make a splash for a while now. They chased hard after Shohei Ohtani, and that didn't work out. Now their next chase would be Soto because they are looking for that big splash and he is the bright new shiny toy this winter.... but that doesn't mean they will get him. They couldn't land Ohtani, and honestly if Soto is as serious about winning as he says he is, the idea of him in a Jays uniform just doesn't make sense.

At the end of the day, I see this coming down to the big-name teams with the bigger payroll because they are spending more money in hopes to be more competitive. Look at the World Series, the teams with the two biggest payrolls faced off. I think the Dodgers will be in the mix because they are the Dodgers and there is no reason why they wouldn't be. Soto is going to look for the big bucks and not many teams are going to be willing to make that dollar commitment because at some point the teams with the deeper pockets are going to buy Soto. That's just the reality. At the end of the day, Soto already rejected multiple high dollar extension offers. Now he gets to pick where he goes and for how much in a multiple bid situation.

The Blue Jays aren't even on my mind and probably not on Soto's. I am not sure what Reynolds was on before he went on the air but whatever it was it was potent. The Yankees are very much in the mix, but so are the Mets. Honestly, that's the team to watch....not the last place Blue Jays.

LOOK WHO'S COMING TO YES IN 2024!

I love listening to former baseball players banter in the booth, providing the on the field perspective that is much needed today. I especially like the old school mentality in this new, modern day of baseball. And this year, if all goes well, we will get the chance to hear another veteran ball player give his color commentary on the game.

“Bern, baby, Bern!” on Yankees telecasts?" According to the New York Post, "YES and Yankees legend Bernie Williams have had talks about Williams joining Yankees broadcasts this coming season, according to sources." That means the talented, musical former center fielder and multi-year World Series Champion will bring a little more life into Yankee broadcasts this year.

"Williams could be a candidate to join lead pre- and postgame host Bob Lorenz and top studio analyst Jack Curry on some nights. If Williams were to come aboard, YES would likely first try him in studio before deciding to increase his workload," reported The Post.

As the Yankees build up their roster in 2024, it will be good to have some fresh blood in the booth. Admittedly, there were some failed experiments including Carlos Beltran and Cameron Maybin, who only lasted a season. But something tells me Bernie will be different. He could offer that Todd Frazier appeal and with his creative side, offering something new to the reports. 

Excitement is coming to Yankee Stadium this fall both on the field and in the reports. I hope Bernie makes the cut and we get to hear him and see him come this spring.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! NOW STOP "BASHING" STANTON!

Happy Thanksgiving, BYB family! I hope your day has been filled with family, fun, great food and traditions. You may be stuffed right now, but hopefully not too full for another course of Yankee news. Good news is it's not so filling and far less calories.

In case you missed it, in your mad dash to prepare your Thanksgiving menu, Cameron Maybin longtime friend to Giancarlo Stanton thinks Stanton has been bullied in New York, read more HERE. Interesting little tidbit, Maybin went from former major leaguer to Public Relations specialist, or maybe psychologist. At any rate, it was an interesting little piece of insanity.

I really dislike these blurbs where other players feel the need to jump in and "rescue" someone else or just throw their two cents in, and that's what Maybin is doing.

 "I've watched this guy year after year. He never jabs back at the fans or the criticism. He just keeps his head down and continues to try to work." Honestly....does that deserve a cookie? Congratulations, taking your licks (especially when you are underperforming) and taking the higher road is called being a professional. This is especially true when you are a role model to kids everywhere. If you want the criticism to stop, then do your job. It's as simple as that. Don't give New York fans and media a reason to make jabs and you won't have to dodge them.

Maybin takes it a step further, "I know he's had some unfortunate injury seasons, but I feel like if you're a New York fan, we've seen people who haven’t been able to handle the pressure and have folded. I think we have such a short memory. We don't take time to appreciate greatness. I just think the guy is a physical specimen…nobody wants to be hurt. I know he's hurt, but damn, can we appreciate what he has done? He's been one of the better playoff Yankees during the playoff struggles that they've had."

The Yankees have never apologized for having high expectations. The lights shine brighter in New York and the weight and responsibility of wearing that uniform is not a good fit for everyone. Maybin must have a different definition of appreciating greatness, which is interesting because he was a Yankee. He knows what the definition of greatness is to the organization and that is winning the World Series. Being a champion is greatness and that is what is appreciated. We all recognize and appreciate effort and know he has had some great moments. No one denies that, but this is not the place to recognize bright moments amongst mediocrity. The Yankees have been mediocre for too long. 

So we hear you Maybin, you believe your friend is underappreciated and unjustly criticized. "I'd love to see him play in a place like Cincinnati…I want to see him play in the NL Central, a division that's a bandbox, somewhere where he might have a breath of fresh air," Maybin said. "He's been under scrutiny for years now. As a friend, I'd love to see him finish his career in a place where he's not getting bashed."
Would someone like to tell Maybin that there are a lot of Yankee fans out there that would also like to see Stanton play for Cincinnati? Or how about Detroit? Literally anywhere else, pick any other team. Honestly, if Stanton wanted to play in the NL Central, he could be a big boy and tell the Yankees that he would be open to a trade and would waive his no-trade clause and let the Yankees find someone else to pass some of that salary to. That won't be easy at all, but if the pinstripes are too heavy and the pressure is too much he could try and help his own cause. For the record, Maybin says Stanton hasn't said that at all.

Playing in New York isn't easy. The expectations here are not what you will find in Oakland. Sorry Maybin, but act like you have been here before and stop whining for your friend.

CASHMAN THROWS STANTON UNDER THE BUS, BUT FAULT LIES ON CASHMAN

Giancarlo Stanton is injury prone. No doubt about it... everybody knows this.  But when the Yankees brought him to New York December 11, 2017, Cashman played this move up as the greatest upgrade to the Yankees since Reggie came to the Bronx.  At the time of the Stanton signing, many touted Cashman as a genius.  Cashman touted himself as one for sure.  Even some of us at BYB praised the move.  But here's the thing... we all knew he was injury prone.  

Here's the thing though, I find it incredibly unprofessional that the same General Manager that signed the guy is now slamming him to the media all these years later. That's right... Cashman and his loose lips strike again.  No filter, just speaking his mind... kind of like an idiot. And my point is this; How does everyone in the room know that Stanton is injury prone, you throw the guy under the bus and don't surround Stanton with depth as the fix?  Seems like a Cashman problem... not a Stanton problem.

CBS Sports writes that Cashman said this of Stanton:

"He's going to wind up getting hurt again more likely than not because it seems to be part of his game?"

Cameron Maybin went after people who feel the same way about Stanton and the notion that he will finish his career in the Bronx. Much respect:

Now look, he's right.  Stanton did good things in New York. Cashman just appears to be ditching G... the same guy that went after G to make the Yankees better.  Weird.

But who do you blame for all this? Well, it's certainly not Stanton. We knew the player we were getting.  You have to blame Cashman.  CBS Sports again:

"It's true Stanton's injuries have become seemingly inevitable and that he did not perform in 2023. That larger issue is Cashman's roster construction and not having suitable depth players to step in. New York's single biggest issue right now is so many of their top young position players have come up and not performed, which has contributed to their depth woes."

The bottom line is this... you never sign a guy like this and have a plan in place.  Cashman did not... years later we still don't. That's on him. The boy wonder has clearly blown it again.

Say what you will Brian... but you're no genius.  You've driven this terrible team into the ground. Go look in a mirror.

MOVING PAST BELTRAN'S CHEATING BLUNDER JUST GOT HARDER...

Talk about a rocky start, yikes! It doesn't get much more uncomfortable than this....

No secret here, I am not Carlos Beltran's biggest fan. The cheater got a gift to be a broadcaster for the team he used to play for and betrayed. He retired after not playing a clean game and now he can't do a clean broadcast, either. Sad but true.

I may not be cheering for Beltran in the booth but I certainly don't want him to misrepresent the Yankees AGAIN in his new role. I'm hoping this was just new job jitters but WOOF he failed this week. If you didn't hear it for yourself, Beltran appeared to break the news of an Aaron Judge extension that hadn't happened:

"Aaron Judge is just such a guy that has so much power. I’m just glad to see him be able to create his new contract with the New York Yankees and be able to stay here in New York. He’s an incredible guy, he’s a leader in the clubhouse, he’s a guy that plays the game hard. … I’m glad to see Aaron Judge increasing his stay here with the New York Yankees." 

That's pretty big news to break, especially on your debut! Several beat writers tried to clarify his comment and then Yankee brass had to try and pass it off as a mistake. An inning later Beltran TRIED to walk back his comment and said he *hopes* the Yankees and Judge could get an extension done but wow that damage was done. 

I wonder what the conversation between Brian Cashman and Beltran sounded like, exactly. They are bosom buddies after all and it set Cashman up for the standard "will not comment" on the contract negotiations and wouldn't even confirm an offer as made. Awkward!

I'm ready for some Cameron Maybin instead of Beltran. I just don't have any sympathy for the guy. That's just WAY too much damage control on your first day and Aaron Judge has redefined how quick someone can forgive and forget. 

Even if he was right and he leaked the news to the world I shouldn't be surprised.....after all, Beltran has a history of knowing EXACTLY what's coming.

CAMERON "RISING STAR" MAYBIN HAS A NEW GIG WITH THE YANKEES!

At last, a reunion I can be excited about. While all fans wait to reunite with baseball as the lockout lives on we finally have something new to look forward to. It's a small piece of good news right now that I think we can all use.

What exactly am I talking about? I'm sure you've all heard this gem by now but in case you haven't you can check all of the details HERE but I'm not going to bury the lead. Cameron Maybin is BACK. Not in pinstripes this time, but he's taking the mic as a YES Network analyst and I am anxious to hear it.

And it sounds like Michael Kay is anxious for all of us to hear it too because Kay says Maybin will be a "star" and "Yes, he's that good." I really can't wait to hear it for myself. I'm still trying to come to terms that Ken Singleton won't be back. My head knows it but my heart does not. Singleton has always been a personal favorite of mine. I will never forget his signature "LOOK OUT!" and I am going to miss that. Times change though, and while I will miss Singleton I wish him a happy retirement and I look forward to what Maybin has to offer.

I think this is a good choice for YES. Now he can see the other side. Maybin used to be a favorite for beat writers everywhere and now he could be a broadcast favorite. He does have some big shoes to fill though but I am sue he will figure that out quickly, especially if he's a natural like Kay says he is.

YES Network should have a flexible rotation now that Maybin is expected to call about 40 games compared to Singleton's 18 and they also have Carlos Beltran calling games too. I love how NJ.com conveniently left that out of their story though:
"Besides Kay and Maybin, the YES broadcast team includes analysts David Cone, Paul O’Neill and John Flaherty, clubhouse reporter Meredith Marakovits and backup play-by-play man Ryan Ruocco."

Nice to see I am not the only one who isn't giving cheating Carlos Beltran a warm welcome.

Welcome back to the Yankees, Maybin! Can't wait to see what the next chapter of your career looks and sounds like.

"PERSONALITYLESS" BELTRAN TO WORK THE YES NETWORK BOOTH

I don't like it. There are things that I love and things that I hate. I don't hate this... but I honestly don't love it either. That being said, I know change is a thing and I guess as a diehard Yankee fan, I will need to embrace it.

The New York Post writes:

"The 20-year veteran has been hired by YES Network as a game analyst and is expected to call 36 games, YES’s Jack Curry announced Friday....

looking to fill a void left when David Cone joined ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” team and Ken Singleton retired.

That opened the door for Beltran, who has been away from the game since he was dismissed as Mets manager in January 2020, less than three months after he was hired, in the wake of the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal. He did not manage a single game."

And I guess that's what bothers me the most. You have a team willing to hire you and then fire you on the spot when the revelations of Astros sign stealing scandal emerged, but YES just hires the guy like we forgot it or something.

Beltran's a good dude. But the Yankees and YES don't owe him anything.  Will he be successful for the 30 plus games he calls? I'm sure he'll do fine. But I have NEVER seen Beltran as a personality, and I certainly would have taken a Cameron Maybin (Read) over Beltran in the booth.

CAMERON MAYBIN COULD LAND IN THE YES NETWORK BROADCAST BOOTH!

I don't know how any of you feel about Cameron Maybin, but I gotta tell you, I love him as an athlete and I like this guy's personality. He's a very positive person, always smiling and a perfect addition to the big rumor that he may be entering the broadcast booth because he's retiring.

You heard that right. Cameron Maybin has retired from baseball.   MLB Network radio on SiriusXM tweets:

Bottom line, I would love to see this move made and I would love Maybin in the booth. I think it would be an incredible addition. Bottom line.

GREAT PICK UP! YANKEES RUMORED TO GET ROSELL HERRERA!

Nice little nugget for your Tuesday morning. The Yankees appeared to have just signed someone, and believe it or not, it could be significant as we will see in Spring Training.

NJ.com writes:

"The Yankees have had quite a few additions turn into out-of-nowhere contributors recently. Luke Voit, Gio Urshela and Cameron Maybin come to mind.

Could Rosell Herrera be the next? The Yankees signed Herrera, a 27-year-old utility man, according to Baseball America."

Craig Mish of SiriusXM/Five Reasons Sports Network said this about Herrera:

“Off the charts. Love him. Hardest-working greatest person there is. Plays everywhere. Greatest teammate and coachable. He needs some adjustments at the plate to be a big league hitter. If he does, he can be an everyday guy for the right team. If all players were like him, everyone’s job would be great. Refreshing player.”

That is literally all I need to know. I love these types of players.

FREE AGENTS THE YANKEES CAN'T AFFORD TO GIVE UP

As the Yankees head into November, so much is up in the air with regards to pitching, sluggers and more specifically free agents.  It is very clear that if the Yankees don't bring in big name starters, yes plural, they will not be able to close the deal and head to the World Series.  We saw the importance of pitcher Stephen Strasburg who was named World Series MVP as the Nationals beat the Astros in seven games.  The Nats starting pitchers were consistent and they ate up innings, unlike the Yankees' starters who could barely make it to the fifth inning, taxing the bullpen and depending on offense late in the game to lift the team to victory.

Austin Romine: The infamous Yankee back-up catcher, Austin Romine has contributed so much to this Yankee team.  "An argument can be made that Sanchez hasn’t lived up to the hype, and with every passing year plagued by injuries and postseason draughts, his potential takes a deafening hit. For the Bombers to make a splash in the postseason and reach the World Series, they desperately need Sanchez to play his best baseball." reported Empire Sports Media.  A second argument is that Romine has stepped up despite not getting as many swings at the plate or time in games. Losing him would be devastating.  Trading Sanchez would be a better option.  We need a catcher that can lead and support starting pitching.  If the Yankees go for Gerrit Cole, having Sanchez behind the plate is a liability.  "Romine doesn’t have starter Gary Sanchez’s power or throwing arm, but he’ll likely get multiple multi-year offers because he works so well with pitchers and he has a reputation as a clutch hitter. A good landing spot for Romine could be the Los Angeles Angels because they need a quality receiver and he’s a Southern California native who lives close to Anaheim," reported NJ.com.

Brett Gardner: The passionate heart of the New York Yankees, Brett Gardner is coming off his best season as a Yankee, blasting 28 home runs and 74 RBIs.  "His 2019 season mostly as a fill-in starter was very good– maybe the best of his career – and the Yanks not only want him back, but they need him in 2020 to be their starter in center field until Aaron Hicks returns in June, July or August from Tommy John surgery. The Yanks also greatly value Gardner’s leadership," reported NJ.com.  Sign him...very simple, even if Hicks was healthy.

Didi Gregorius: The infield leader and ultimate player-coach, Didi Gregorius is a must-sign.  He is the pulse of the team.  He gives the team life.  In 2020, Gregorius starts the season at 30-years-old.  He is an incredible athlete and although he started the season late due to his 2018-season ending surgery, Gregorius came back and hit with power in so many clutch situations in 2019.  "The Yanks could opt to go with Gleyber Torres at shortstop and play DJ LeMahieu at second base next season, but they’d be much deeper with Gregorius returning. It’ll probably come down to money.

According to spotrac.com, Gregorius has a market value of three years and $40.7 million, and that may be too pricy for the Yankees’ liking," reported NJ.com.  The Brewers are in need of a starting short stop.  As much as I want to him, the Yankees may not agree and use the money for starting pitching.  In my book, he stays, without question.

The rest of the free agents are guys like Edwin Encarnacion (who was given a 5 million dollar buyout but could come back at a discount just before the season), Dellin Betances, Cory Gearrin, and Cameron Maybin.  Let's hope the Yankees make smart deals in this off season when it comes to free agents and save some cash for premier starters who include Strasburg who will also be testing the market.

SERIOUS COMPLICATIONS WITH STANTON

If there is one thing that I WILL NOT miss from this season it is all of the injuries. It's amazing that despite all of the injuries we still won 103 games this season and here we are in the ALCS and on the chase for our 28th championship. It hasn't been easier....and Sunday reminded us that it isn't getting easier.

We are all hoping for good news with Giancarlo Stanton. It's hard to watch him go 2-for-4 with a solo home run on Saturday and then out of the lineup yesterday due to a quad strain. We only saw Stanton in 18 regular season games this season, so depending on him during the postseason may seem crazy but, there's no doubt that the lineup is deeper with him in it. Let's just hope this quad strain isn't a long-term concern like Brian Cashman said.

The Yankees accomplished a lot this season without Stanton, so while the Yankees may not NEED him in the lineup they certainly want him in there. Even with a lot of missed time Stanton showed us how productive he can be when he’s even close to healthy. He hit an impressive .300 BA in 15 plate appearances, drawing four walks against the Twins in the ALDS. This weekend's home run reminded us of his power. If the Yankees could get that back for the remainder of the postseason, the lineup would be even more dangerous.

For the meantime we will be seeing more of Cameron Maybin and Aaron Hicks, who has his own injury concerns. Hicks hasn't played since August 3rd, so he is just as rusty. The Yankees are hoping that the off day tomorrow and the extra rest will give Stanton the rest he needs and he will be able to return to the lineup. If Stanton doesn’t respond to treatment and rest, there is a possibility he could be dropped from the ALCS roster and be replaced but if that does happen Stanton wouldn’t be eligible to play in the World Series if the Yankees get there.

After watching the Yankees put 30 players on the injured list during the regular season it is no surprise that complications from injuries continue in the postseason. We've found a way to win despite them all season, and we can continue to do it again. It's what the BEST of good teams do.

For now, let's just hope Stanton comes back and is able to play....and the Yankees will be ready to win at home on Tuesday. Fingers crossed.

YANKEES FIRST

The best thing about this Yankee team is that they all work together to contribute to the greater goal.  Each player adds his own value, his own personality and his own talent.  It is about the team first and the individual second.  This mantra has served this team well and they are just warming up!

“The biggest thing is not only the talent, but just how guys genuinely care about each other,” Maybin said late Monday night as the party inside the Yankees clubhouse wound down following a 5-1 win over the Twins at Target Field that completed an ALDS sweep. “Guys every day coming in here, whether it’s on the field or off the field, checking on each other, caring about what’s going on in each other’s lives. I think that’s what makes it special, the bond off the field and it carries over on the field," reported the NY Post.

Maybin is one of those guys that whether he is on the bench or asked to step in to a game situation, he contributes.  But it is more than just performance, it is the chemistry that is unique about this team.  “It’s a brotherhood here, it’s not just a group of guys. I think every day, guys are excited to show up to the field and play together and try to accomplish something special. This is a special group,” reported the Post.

The Yankees have been through the mill this season. Between injuries, disappointing calls and schedule challenges, they have had to step up, reset and perform at a much higher level.  It has been team first always.  The Savages have prevailed despite the odds, despite the set backs and beyond the expectations in light of their multiple stints to the IL.  Team first have served them well so far and they are just getting started.
