BUH BYE TO CORBAN JOSEPH
Corban Joseph was alot of fun to watch, and for a short time, Joseph was a call up in 2013 and there was alot of buzz surrounding him...mostly by Suzyn Waldman. I kid... people liked what Joseph offered. But now, something has happened.
It's being reported by Lou DiPetrio of the YESNetwork.com, that Corban Joseph has been released. Lou writes:
"The New York Yankees made a trio of minor-league transactions Wednesday, signing outfielder Chris Young to a minor-league deal and releasing two players - RHP Alfredo Aceves and infielder Corban Joseph - from their Triple-A contracts...
Joseph, 25, had made his MLB debut with the Yankees last year but missed most of the season with a shoulder injury and was outrighted off the 40-man roster last winter. He remained in the organization and spent all of 2014 with the RailRiders, hitting .268 with four homers and 28 RBI in 70 games.
The RailRiders also announced one other roster move Tuesday, reinstating outfielder Adonis Garcia from the disabled list to replace Joseph on the roster."
Shoulder injuries are tough and now you have to wonder if Joseph will end up somewhere down the road. He's a talented player and he's young. You gotta wish him well.
As you can see, Aceves was also released. We here at BYB have always liked Aceves, but the story for me personally was Joseph. A youngster with a tough break. Hopefully he'll bounce back somewhere.

TANAKA-MANIA HITS THIS SEPTEMBER!
Well, for Masahiro Tanaka, the journey in his first year in pinstripes has been strange. He was one of the top pitchers in baseball going 12-4 this year. Then, right before the All-Star break, there was a problem, and the Yankees, protecting their investment, put him on the shelf.
Now, after a long rehab and simulation, Tanaka may almost be ready for September.
According to Craig Calcaterra of Hardball Talk, Tanaka "...tossed 49 pitches and, according to those who watched it, he utilized his entire repertoire of pitches, splitter included. His command was a bit rusty, but afterwards, the Yankees manager waxed optimistic..."
Bob Nightengale of USA Today:
Joe Girardi pleased with Tanaka's outing and says he would return only as a starter and not in relief
— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) August 28, 2014
Look, as I've stated numerous times... don't rush the Golden Child. We have Shane Greene... We have Brandon McCarthy. Let's just take our time with Tanaka, just in case.
It's good news, but I just want them to be cautious.

A PERFECT NIGHT WITH THE CHARLESTON RIVERDOGS
(Courtesy: Bleeding Yankee Blue)
I did something I rarely do when I visit a city I've never been to. I found the time to get to a ball game. As a parent with a lot of children, there never seems to be time. But last night, I made time, and I'm glad I did.
(Courtesy: Bleeding Yankee Blue)
Yup, I went to Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park and saw the Riverdogs demolish the Greenville Drive. In other words, it was the Yankees vs. the Red Sox... and the Yankees, or Riverdogs did good!
The crowd was tough. I have to be honest, it was a bunch of people from New York in the city of Charleston for a Dogs game. We stuck out like sore thumbs. I wrote to Mike O'Hara last night after the first few innings:
"We don't blend."
I got a "Hahahaha" right back at me. He knew I was joking. Just alittle humor of North meeting the South once again. I can tell you this though; The baseball knowledge among the fans was terrific, and they were a hardcore baseball crowd. It was the second to last game of the season, but it was intense and it was just good baseball.
(Courtesy: Bleeding Yankee Blue)
I'll tell you, there were 2 guys I really wanted to see live. Michael O'Neill, Paul O'Neill's nephew, and Gosuke Katoh.
(Courtesy: Bleeding Yankee Blue)
Both players are very talented and I believe we'll see them with the big club before we know it. Both didn't disappoint. Click on the score below for the box score. I even tweeted once again to the BYB audience that we're doing something real special on Bleeding Yankee Blue real soon with O'Neill:
As we walked out of the Park, my wife said to me, "We've been saying we've wanted to do that for years. Now we can say we did."
Damn straight.
Final: Riverdogs 8 - Drive 0

Overall, the night was terrific. If you've never been out to see the Riverdogs play, you must go. The
park is great, the fans are real, and overall, it was a gorgeous place. Oh yeah, and it's
just great baseball. I highly recommend it.As we walked out of the Park, my wife said to me, "We've been saying we've wanted to do that for years. Now we can say we did."

THERE SHOULD NEVER BE A SHRINE FOR BUD SELIG
This is odd, and stupid and ridiculous in my book. I wanted to share this with you because I believe you'll be just as annoyed as me.
You know I've never been a fan of Bud Selig as commissioner. I believe Joe Torre should have been the new commissioner. Why you ask? Because I believer a commissioner should actually be a person who has played the game and can get things done the correct way, working with the players union as well as giving the game the right elements and making the right decisions that benefit everyone, from the fans to the players to the owners. Torre is a man of the people... Selig is out for himself. It was never more evident than when he announced he wanted a parting gift for himself this last year as commissioner. Ridiculous.
According to MLB.com, Corey Brock says the San Diego Padres have paid homage to Selig... or something:
"On yet another sun-kissed day in paradise, the Padres honored Selig with a dedication ceremony of the Selig Hall of Fame Plaza at Petco Park, which sits behind the Western Metal Supply Building, next to 13 palm trees, waving gently in the breeze during the 20-minute ceremony before Tuesday's game against the Brewers, which the Padres won, 4-1.
Dee said the area will serve as a home to the Padres Hall of Fame and eventually statues in the plaza to honor Padres greats as well as a plaque to honor Selig, not just for his overall achievements to baseball during his 22-year tenure as Commissioner but the specific accomplishment of helping to keep baseball afloat in San Diego.
The Selig Hall of Fame Plaza will be open year-round to fans."
Mike Dee, the CEO of the Padres said: "We wanted to do something to recognize his contributions here in San Diego because they are unique... Make no mistake, his contributions to the creation of Petco Park are profound. For those of us who were around and know the trips he made and conversations he had with local officials."
I guess that's all fine and good for the Padres, but what about the Padres fans? Well, there is already a petition to have Selig's name taken off of Petco Park. Good for them! According to USA Today, "So some Padres fans objected to their club honoring Selig and responded with an online petition to strip the commissioner’s name from the newly named plaza." Nice, isn't baseball about the fans anyway? Without fans, how does baseball continue to be successful?
And while were on the subject, what about baseball as a whole? What about the witchhunt of Alex Rodriguez, but David Ortiz can prance around Boston scot-free?
What about the way he turned a blind on of abusive PED use in the 90's, when fans started to show up to the ballparks again to watch home runs? I guess when the money started to poor in, sometimes you just keep quiet, right Bud?
Now, sure, if the Padres management is happy with Selig, they could do whatever the hell they want to honor this guy, but Selig is the commissioner of all of baseball, and he was a terrible commissioner.
I found the story interesting.... and wanted to share. Carry on.

TAMING THE TIGER
David Price got rocked and the Yankee offense was alive and well tonight. Price only lasted 2 innings. My goodness... you gotta love it if you're a Yankee fan.
Let's get right to the offense. In the 3rd inning, there were 8 runs scoring for New York.
Derek Jeter doubled knocking in Jacoby Ellsbury. Mark Teixeira then doubled and Jeter scored. Beltran then singled and Martin Prado scored. Next, Brian McCann singled knocking in a run. Brett Gardner singled and Carlos Beltran scored. Francisco Cervelli then singled and McCann scored.
After that, Ellsbury sacrificed home Chase Headley. Next, Jeet sacrificed home Gardy. That was the rally, and that my friends was a great inning!
Shane Greene started for the Yankees. He went 7 innings, gave up only 5 hits and 2 runs. Adam Warren then gave up a run and so did Dellin Betances, but luckily for the Yankees and Yankee fans.... that big Yankee inning saved the team, and gave us fans alittle more hope.
I like runs... let's hope they have plenty more in them! Go Yanks!

CHRIS YOUNG HAS A JOB WITH THE YANKEES APPARENTLY
Well, this came as a surprise. For a team that needed offense, I'm not sure why the Yankees would even think about a player like Chris Young, but they have.
According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, the Yankees have signed Young to a minor league deal. Heyman says: "The Yankees signed free-agent outfielder Chris Young to a minor-league deal, sources say.
Young struggled across town with the Mets this year after signing a one-year, $7.25-million deal with them, and the Mets wound up releasing Young.
Young is considered a very good outfielder with some power, but he hit just .205 with eight homers for the Mets and the signing became the target of a lot of criticism."
OK then. Again... Chris Young? Really? I mean yeah, it's a minor league deal and if it can help, I'm all for it. But all I keep seeing is a .205 avg.
Welcome, Mr. Young. Good luck to you.

I'M NOT GONNA BE THE MUSH, BUT...
So, I just woke up from about a 60-day nightmare and this is what happened:
1. The Cubs swept the first place Orioles.
2. The Angels are tied for first with the A's despite all of Billy Beane's magic tricks.
3. The Yankees are... I can't say it. Otherwise, I will be the mush.
Frankly, I should not even be writing this but I felt compelled after watching recaps and reviewing the highlights on Twitter. It's not the late 1970s, but I feel this sense of.... this powerful feeling of.... I just can't bring myself to say it. Call me superstitious but I can't bring myself to say it so I will let the numbers do it for me- you know, business analytics are the hottest thing out there to make a point anyway.
Here's how it looks:
The Yankees stand in second behind the Baltimore Orioles, who as I said, got swept by the last place Chicago Cubs. We are 2 1/2 games behind the Mariners for the second Wild Card slot. Our mid-season replacements have come in and shown their value. At the top of the list is Martin Prado who is batting .364 over the last seven games. Our mainstay, Hiroki Kuroda, is pitching with a 3.00 ERA over the last seven days and Brandon McCarthy has been stellar hovering between a 1.35 and 2.55 since coming to the Yankees. We are in the middle of pack as far as pitching, batting and fielding, which is no surprise. But what is a surprise is what has been happening. Not that we didn't have it in us, but let's face it, I am a realist and it didn't look pretty.
I hope this post does not jinx us, but I feel like I did wake up from nightmare into greener, dreamier pastures. I have nothing else to say but I better wear my clothes to bed inside out, put a spoon under my pillow and keep quiet. (whisper, whisper- Let's Go Yankees).

I DON'T LIKE MLB's DRAFT PROCESS
I have a friend Chris who's a BYB reader and just all around great guy. He recently sent me an email about the way MLB handles the draft. I found it very interesting, and so, I've decided to publish it, with his permission. I wanted to get your thoughts. Thanks Chris... check this out ladies and gentlemen...
The Major League Baseball leadership is always making statements that salaries are getting out of hand for small market teams. I agree that salaries are just too high, and it trickles down to ticket prices for us fans.
The drafting system in its current state is the cause of it. Each player that is drafted is locked in for a minimum of six years before they are available for the free agent market. The problem lies with the fact that the drafting system awards under-performance.
It's the same mentality in Little League across the country... every child gets a trophy for their "effort."
Teams like the Marlins get awarded for being bad, and when they start getting good, they trade away most of the good players.
They will keep one big name like Giancarlo Stanton just to keep the butts in the seats, but everyone else is a target for a trade. They have one of the best minor league systems in the game because they are bad every year. Yet, they get awarded with a top draft pick for being cellar dwellers every year. On the other hand, you have teams like the New York Yankees that have not had a draft pick lower (or higher, however you look at it) than twenty-seven in the first round for more then fifteen years because they are good year after year. They get penalized for being good. Because of this, they have to go out and pay to get the guys off the free agent market to keep the team going if they want to stay competitive causing higher salaries. This also has a secondary effect that makes the average age of teams like this get higher and higher.
The Phillies are in the same boat now, along with a few other teams because the mediocre or bad teams are always getting drafting priority. A few years ago, Major League Baseball leadership instituted a penalty system for teams with high salaries, but they never compensated for the drafting inequality when they did it.
Do they expect the good teams to accept being bad for a few years just so they can upgrade their minor league system? It sure seems that way to me.
I have an idea that I've been thinking about for awhile. I know they would never do it, but I just wanted to toss it out to get some thoughts. The draft should be a rotational set up. The team with pick #1 this year gets pick #30 the following year. Then, #2 for the year after that would get pick #29. It would not be too hard to implement, and would keep the farm systems more equal across the board thereby bringing these ridiculous salaries back from orbit. To make it easier to understand, check out below. The first year of implementation should be reverse order, best team gets first pick. This would jump start the balancing process in my opinion.

McCARTHY GRINDS IT WHILE THE YANKEES FLOP
Rick Porcello pitched a gem for the Motown Cats tonight. I'd love to get on the Yankees case big time, not really sure I can, even though I'd love to beat the Tigers every single time! Look though, the 5 game winning streak was snapped, but Porello just pitched really well, and the Yankees couldn't help out Brandon McCarthy at all. They tried... oh they tried, but it wasn't enough.
Brandon McCarthy has been nothing but excellent for New York. He was again tonight, going 6.1 innings, giving up 9 hits and 5 runs. Hey, 5 runs is enough to chip away at in a 9 inning game, especially even after a Yankees winning streak. But with Porcello pitching tonight, it was downright impossible.
The only Yankee runs came when Jacoby Ellsbury hit 2 home runs. Both were solo shots. 1 home run in the 5th. 1 home run in the 8th.
Other than that, the Yankees stumbled. There were moments... I mean, besides Ellsbury, Derek Jeter and Carlos Beltran were each 2-4.
But we left 5 men on base. We didn't have it tonight against good pitching. I'd love to hammer the Yanks... I just can't.
Look, all we can do is go to bed and comeback tomorrow swinging. We can do this... but truth be told... if a team could win 162 games in a season... the Yankees would be doing it... but it's just not possible. Give them the loss tonight, but we're back strong tomorrow!
Final: Tigers 5 - Yankees 2

BYB EXCLUSIVE: TY HENSLEY'S THERE, BECAUSE HE SAID SO
I give huge props to believers, because getting there and staying there is no easy task... in baseball, in life. When I say “there”, I mean whatever goal you came to conquer. Ty Hensley wanted to become a major league baseball player… he still does and since his draft with the Yankees, (Read our first interview with him, EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: TY HENSLEY: YANKEES 1ST ROUND PICK), he’s had to overcome a few obstacles.
Now, many of you remember our BYB Exclusive with Ty after his surgery, and learned a ton about his injury and recovery in BYB EXCLUSIVE: TY HENSLEY TALKS POST SURGERY. Back then, Ty told us:
"I don't focus on the things I can't control. I spend my time focusing on what I can control... my attitude, my work ethic, and my skill level and I strive everyday to separate myself in that way because ultimately it is those things that will get me where I want to go."It's a positive spin on injury and obstacles and the message was clear; stay focused on the prize, and everything will fall into place. After making his way all the way back, he had another set back, a hernia. Of all the luck! It didn't stop Hensley though. Nose to the grindstone and keep on pushing.
Recently it was reported that since his return back to baseball, he was sent to the Staten Island Yankees. Another step... check! The kid's an animal, he has our full support here at Bleeding Yankee Blue, and it all goes back to what I started with. I give huge props to believers and Ty Hensley is one.
(In Photo: Marci, Ty's mom, with Ty)
I have been asked by many of you how Ty Hensley is doing. We here at Bleeding Yankee Blue are happy to report that Ty's doing great. We also have alittle access to the Hensley family, the other blogs don't. We're lucky and happy about that. In fact, one of the nicest compliments I could ever receive was from Ty himself, when, during an interview, he said:
“You guys have been so great asking me questions that no one else maybe cares about.”The question was about family and the support he’s received. It was a simple question, but no one else ever bothered to ask. We do at BYB, because we believe in family. We report more than just baseball, we report about life and that's why you're reading this today, because you get it. Hensley’s human, he’s not a robot, and he has hills and valleys just like the rest of us. That’s why it's nice to know once in a while who’s joining these athletes emotionally in the journey. It keeps believers going. It’s kept Ty going and I give this kid all the credit in the world. So, instead of giving you a report that the other blogs will just "report", BYB is going the extra mile. Here's the real update on Ty Hensley… and a few other things BYB readers want to know about.
It’s Ty O’Clock. Here’s Ty:
BYB: You're in Staten Island. Boom! Tell the BYB audience how you made it there!
Ty Hensley: The Yankees training staff did a great job with helping me get through my rehab and getting back on the field. Not much else to that, just happy to be playing again!
@TyHensley17 Tonight: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 4 K. But the big question is this... How Did He Feel Out there? #TYsTheLimit #BYB @mhensley17
— Robert Casey (@BleednYankeeBlu) July 31, 2014
BYB: After your first outing, I mentioned on Twitter that the biggest thing right now is "How did he feel?" Our BYB family knows your journey, so obviously it's a question we need to ask. How did you feel physically... mentally?Ty Hensley: I felt really good. I'm getting close to being back to where I was before all of the surgeries I had. Mentally, I'm stronger than I have ever been. I've had to go through a lot of adversity off the field, but it made me a tougher man in the end.
BYB: Many in the BYB audience aren't aware that before you got on the mound again, you had a setback, a hernia. When did all this occur and how did it happen?
Ty Hensley: It's pretty much been there since late 2012. I started feeling it again before hip surgeries, and then again after this past spring training. My ab had come off the bone, but apparently a normal MRI wouldn't show that. So I kept repeatedly straining that muscle since it was not attached properly. Now the problem is solved.
BYB: Wow. That's fascinating. OK, you know we root for the believer here at BYB. You have more drive than many because you've been knocked down a few times, but you keep coming back stronger. Share with us your emotions; the peaks, the valleys of getting there, and how often are you dreaming on standing on the mound at Yankee Stadium?
Ty Hensley: Obviously there was a lot of frustration as to why it all happened. Never had anything worse than a sprained ankle growing up, so it was confusing to me. Being away from playing ball and seeing all my buddies doing it was tough. There were definitely some dark days but my family helped me get through it all. Now I'm just focused on climbing the ladder to the big leagues.
BYB: Before the hernia, how was your rotation after the abdominal strain injury and surgery? Did it feel totally different than the way you'd been throwing before the strain? Can you be specific about the mechanics of it?
Ty Hensley: It felt kind of odd at first just getting used to it. It was more of a freedom type of feeling. Took a lot of stress off of other areas of my body. Mechanically, I don't think to much has changed. Just more freedom!
BYB: Momma Bear, as I affectionately called your mother in one of our posts was psyched a few weeks ago with your progress. Remind the BYB audience about your support system at home. How's your lovely family?
Ty Hensley: They are doing great.. I miss them a ton and I can't wait to see them after instructional league!
(In Photo: Jake, Marci, Ty)
BYB: How's your brother Jake doing? What's he up to?
Ty Hensley: Gearing up for his senior year of football. I'm so excited for him and to be able to watch. He's gonna get some big time offers here pretty soon I imagine!
BYB: On the mound in Staten Island in your first start a few weeks back... Put us in the mindset... What are you thinking?
Ty Hensley: I was just thinking about executing each and every pitch and just being happy and feeling at home doing what I love to do again!
BYB: You're an inspiration. So what do you tell others who find the life mountain too hard to climb? What helps get a person over the mountain in your mind?
Ty Hensley: "Don't give up. Don't ever give up." -Jimmy V. You just gotta keep on keepin' on when life gets tough. There's a light at the end of the tunnel and you'll be a stronger person by getting through it.
BYB: Does your drive stem from a positive home life? If so, why?
Ty Hensley: Yeah I like to think my parents did a great job of raising me. I got lucky.
BYB: When you come to New York City, be sure to text me. I'll take you to Fratellis. We'll get a pizza, I'm buying.
Ty Hensley: Sounds like a plan!
BYB: Finally, anything you'd like too say to the BYB audience who have been asking about you and supporting you since day 1?
Ty Hensley: Thank y'all I will continue to try and make everyone proud!
Thank you Ty for working hard to accomplish your goals. You're an inspiration, and we appreciate it here at Bleeding Yankee Blue. The best to you and your family. We love you guys!

THE ROAD AHEAD
The Yankees showed signs of life in recent days. Maybe it was having the players of yesteryear assembled to honor Joe Torre that made them examine themselves in the clubhouse mirror and say, “LET’S GO! THIS IS RIDICULOUS!”
Whatever the reason, the Yanks have strung together some wins. Yes, the came at the expense of the lowly Chicago White Sox, but YOU MUST beat the teams you are supposed to beat to play in October. Early in the home stand they dropped 2 to an Astros team that somehow has their number this year…that can’t happen. The club now heads out on the most important road trip of the 2014 season. Every game is a must win at this point, but this trip they will see teams in the playoff hunt. Can they show the same heart and sweep the Motown Cats in Detroit? Well, they better. The Tigers have a thorn in their paw and are limping around lately. They are more prey than predator all of a sudden and the Yankees could move ever closer to that 2nd Wildcard spot…oh yeah, the Monday game against a young and hungry KC team was a nice warm up. The Royals are all grown up it seems. 8-1 last night? Yup... I'll take that.
After a few days in the Midwest enjoying Arthur Bryant’s’ BBQ and some Smokey Robinson songs the Bombers will head to the Great White North and see if that can’t put the Jays to sleep for good. I haven’t understood how Toronto always seems to fade.
They have big bats and the pitching isn’t terrible…and yet…Oh Canada, Joe Carter doesn’t live here anymore. The Yankees HAVE to clip some wings and make them long for some Maple Leaf Hockey. There is nothing else to say.
Brian McCann’s (arguably signature moment as a Yankee) walk off dinger last Sunday could be the wave that turns the tide. Maybe they realize the braces on their “Magic Legs” are breaking off and they can “Run like the wind blows” to steal from the ever poetic Forrest Gump.
This is the time to go, gentlemen. The road is there. Walk the walk. Get it done. Like Captain Jeter has always said, “It’s not the best team that gets it done. It’s the team that plays the best baseball at that right time.” I think every Yankee fan would welcome seeing your best baseball…because that brand hasn’t been on display thus far this season. What do you say, boys? LET’S RUN!!
**I don’t usually play soft rock songs…but when I do I play Jackson Browne…you too? Super. "Let’s GO YANK EES!!”

THE WINNING STREAK IS ON...
The number 5 in Yankeeland is a significant number. Joe DiMaggio was a terrific ballplayer for the New York Yankees. But the 5 also means a 5 game winning streak for the 2014 Yankees... and it wasn't just 5 games tonight, it was 8 runs to the Royals 1. That doesn't happen too often with this Yankee offense. But it happened tonight... and "they look glorious."
The Yankees won because of great offense and great pitching. When the combination of the 2 happens, this club is unstoppable. More times than not though, it doesn't work this well. I'm not about to get too excited here... but something good is happening in Yankeeland. Do you feel it?
Michael Pineda started and looks great. He pitched 6.1 innings, gave up 5 hits and only 1 run. David Huff followed and didn't give up another run all game.
The run scoring for the Yankees went like this:
In the 3rd, Derek Jeter grounded out but Ichiro Suzuki scored. Then, in the 4th, Stephen Drew homered. It was a solo shot. In the 7th, red hot Martin Prado homered. Another solo shot. Jacoby Ellsbury then singled and knocked in 1. After that, Jeet singled knocking in yet another. Brian McCann then sacrificed home Ellsbury.
In the 9th, Ellsbury homered. It was a 2 run homer.
Final: Yankees 8 - Royals 1
Keep going Yanks!
