BUH BYE TO CORBAN JOSEPH

Corban Joseph was alot of fun to watch, and for a short time, Joseph was a call up in 2013 and there was alot of buzz surrounding him...mostly by Suzyn Waldman. I kid... people liked what Joseph offered.  But now, something has happened.

It's being reported by Lou DiPetrio of  the YESNetwork.com, that Corban Joseph has been released.  Lou writes:

"The New York Yankees made a trio of minor-league transactions Wednesday, signing outfielder Chris Young to a minor-league deal and releasing two players - RHP Alfredo Aceves and infielder Corban Joseph - from their Triple-A contracts... 

Joseph, 25, had made his MLB debut with the Yankees last year but missed most of the season with a shoulder injury and was outrighted off the 40-man roster last winter. He remained in the organization and spent all of 2014 with the RailRiders, hitting .268 with four homers and 28 RBI in 70 games.

The RailRiders also announced one other roster move Tuesday, reinstating outfielder Adonis Garcia from the disabled list to replace Joseph on the roster."

Shoulder injuries are tough and now you have to wonder if Joseph will end up somewhere down the road. He's a talented player and he's young.  You gotta wish him well.

As you can see, Aceves was also released.  We here at BYB have always liked Aceves, but the story for me personally was Joseph.  A youngster with a tough break.  Hopefully he'll bounce back somewhere.

THE LAST PUZZLE PIECE

As much as I loved puzzles growing up....there was always that one piece that gave you trouble! Trying to plug it in and complete the picture could be frustrating. You look at the puzzle piece and then look at all the holes it could fit in and eventually you find it's home, but man sometimes it takes a lot of time. Right now, I think the Yankees bench is kind of like that puzzle.

The infield and outfield are set, but there are a lot of puzzle pieces aka Yankee players that could fit in for the final bench spot. So who is it going to be? I personally think it will be an infielder, but that is just me. Other people have told me they think it is going to be an outfielder, and I don't agree.

The Yankees have made it pretty clear that Brian Roberts will be our starting second basemen, and Kelly Johnson will man third base. No offense to them, but that isn't the most solid infield. Roberts is too injury prone, so if he is out then that is going to make the roster thinner. When healthy, Roberts can make a big difference in the lineup because he is very effective on the bases. Johnson just is not an everyday player in my eyes. I can't adjust to the idea of having someone like Alex Rodriguez at third base to Johnson. That is such a drastic change I can't wrap my head around it.

The infield has more question marks then anything right now. With Mark Teixeira still a big question mark and Derek Jeter getting back in action after missing almost the entire season, if they go down then that makes things even more challenging. So who can come off the bench and make the most impact?

Right now if you are keeping tabs on Spring Training, it is hard not to notice Yangervis Solarte. He is hitting a crazy .778/.800/1.444 and his switch hitting abilities would be very valuable to the Yankees. He is also pretty versatile, he can play all in-field positions except first base and can play both corner outfield positions. That looks really attractive, but can he perform against big league hitters once the season starts? If he played first I would put hit at the front of the pack right now.

There is also Corban Joseph and Eduardo Nunez to consider, but they are so high-risk I cringe to think about them out there. Corban Joseph is pretty average on the field, he isn't going to be stellar at any one skill or position and he tends to make errors a lot. The Yankees took him off of the 40-man roster over the winter and other teams didn't claim him....take that for what it is worth. Speaking of errors, there is Nunez. It's hard not to like him because he is a funny guy but the errors and his defensive skills frighten me. He doesn't make up for it much with the bat either. He can hit for contact but he has little power so if he doesn't get on base and steal then he isn't giving the Yankees the most impact. He does have a minor league option that the Yankees could choose to exercise.

We can't forget Russ Canzler, again. He can play the outfield and he is actually the only other true first basemen on the team. Seems logical to me, but he only has 102 at bats in the major leagues and Joe Girardi still says that Johnson is the backup first basemen despite the fact that he is slated to play third and he has only played first base 18 times. That idea scares me. Maybe Canzler deserves a shot instead of sending him down to the minors, he is versatile enough.

Then there is Dean Anna. I see him as another Nunez, except he is more sound defensively. Anna is decent at everything, he isn't going to stand out in one particular area but he could get the job done in a pinch. He can play all over the infield like Nunez except for first base which could also give the Yankees another option if they want this role, but don't want to give Nunez the option. His best asset is his plate discipline but that is at a minor league level. Can he still do that against Major League pitching? It's a risk.

Last but not least, there is Scott Sizemore. This option makes me cringe a little. Sizemore made a big impact for the Oakland A's in 2011, but since then he has been injury prone. Even if he is healthy, he is hard to predict or count on. He could be a valuable player at second or third, and he has the experience in a bench role so it makes me wonder if that gives him a slight edge. The Yankees may value that experience and give it to him based on that. Oh and....anyone else find it ironic that he was given Robinson Cano's old number? Just me? Hmmmm.....makes you wonder if that is the Yankees strange way of showing their hand. We know the Yankees like that veteran presence, and Sizemore does offer that. Stay tuned.....

I don't know who will be the final piece to this puzzle, but the Yankees certainly do have their options. It's a tough choice. If we learned anything from last year, having a strong bench is important because they just may have to play a bigger role than originally planned. So who is your favorite? Let us know!

CORBAN JOSEPH WAS OUTRIGHTED

Now, for all you new baseball fans who aren't familiar with the word "outrighted", it doesn't mean that Corban Joseph was brought out to the woodshed and roughed up.  In this case, it means that Joseph was sent straight to Scranton Wilkes-Barre. When the Yanks made the moves the other day to fill out the 40 man roster, (Read BIG MOVES IN THE YANKEES YOUTH MOVEMENT) Joseph was one of the moving parts. Don't panic. You can read about it HERE.

Read what "outrighted" means:

"A player who is outrighted to the minors is removed from the 40-man roster but is still paid according to the terms of his guaranteed contract. A player can only be outrighted once in his career without his consent."

WHEN IT COMES TO TEIXEIRA, WE TOLD YOU SO

A quick note and something I was hearing whiffs of in May. It was revealed today HERE, and then confirmed by Mark Teixeira that he will be shut down for the rest of the season in an effort to repair his wrist in surgery. Recovery is about 6 months.

On May 4th, Bleeding Yankee Blue was bold enough to reveal that we we're sure through our sources that Teixeira would be shut down this season. We wrote then in THE RUMORS I KEEP HEARING ABOUT TEIXEIRA, quote "...this wrist injury is worse than we all thought and I’m not saying “back by the All-Star Break” worse… I’m saying I'm hearing it’s "season ending" worse… like maybe a surgery situation, much like Brett Gardner last year. Shocking? Hey, it wouldn’t surprise me at all..."


You don't need a crystal ball.  You don't need a Yankee press conference... "it's all there, black and white, clear as crystal!"  Sure, quoting Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory makes no sense in this situation, but it's funny on a sad day in Yankeeland.

So what's the bad news? Well, it's that Tex will be out. The good news is Lyle Overbay will fill the void, OR maybe they bring up Corban Joseph again or something. Plus, Mark Teixeira claims to be 100 percent by next season. Sure, that's until the other wrist starts to give him trouble. Sure, I sound negative, but let's be honest, Mark Teixeira has had wrist problems for a while now. Sure, maybe this surgery corrects that, but let's hope the other one doesn't start barking or we'll be doing this all over again next season. Whatever the case, rest up Tex... We'll see you next year!

Gee, I wonder what Brian Cashman would say if Tex tweeted this on his Twitter right now? Probably not "Shut the F--- Up" I suppose... he likes Tex.

SPLITTING GOOSE EGGS

So the Yankees played the Indians in a "old school" double header today.  In the first game, there isn't much to tell other than the Yankees were shut out and lost 1-0 by a very good Justin Masterson. David Phelps pitched for the Yankees and gave up 1 home run in the first inning to Jason Kipnis.  He struggled in the 7th but not another run was given up that game by Yankee pitching.  In the end, the Yankees didn't hit Masterson who pitched the complete game shut out. 

The highlight for the Yankees had to be Corban Joseph who played a real good first base. I was impressed.

Final for Game 1: Indians 1 - Yankees 0.

The Yankees pounced in the second game today.

Vidal Nuno started and how sweet it was.  He went 5 innings and gave up only 3 hits, zero runs. Adam Warren pitched the next 4 innings and got the Save.

Austin Romine doubled in the 7th and Corban Joseph scored.  Alittle bit later Jayson Nix singled and Romine scored. Vernon Wells hit and Brett Gardner scored and then the mighty Lyle Overbay doubled and Wells scored. Oh yeah and Ben Francisco reached on an error and that's when Overbay scored. Again, this all happened in the 7th.

It was a good attack today by the Yanks and in the end, alot of the kids got a shot in Game 2. It was nice to see.  A shut out by the Yanks to match the Indians shut out earlier in the day.

Final for game 2: Yankees 7 - Indians 0.

AROD CLEARED TO DO "BASEBALL ACTIVITIES"

Remember Alex Rodriguez?  If you don't, all you have to do is "Google" him and there are plenty of stories involving him and his alleged connection to Biogenesis.  Or how about the story about him and the 24 year old girl out of Santiago.  It was a report out of a Dominican Republic paper, the Diario Libre, read HERE... kind of silly, right? Or, how about Alex posing with his adorable daughters just "chilling" enjoying daddy life. Alex posted this on his Facebook a few weeks ago. 

Whatever the case, this guy's a lightening rod. This however is really good news.  According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, baseball activities finally resume for ARod on Monday:

According to Feinsand, "...GM Brian Cashman said A-Rod would report to Tampa on Monday to begin the next step in his rehab process after January’s left hip surgery. 'He’s done a lot of different things culminating in doing full-bore running,' Cashman said.  A baseball program was still being worked out for A-Rod, although Cashman stressed that the original timetable has not changed and the third baseman is expected to come back “sometime after the All-Star break.”

So there you have it, light at the end of the tunnel and I'm glad.  I know many have written off ARod and with the addition of Kevin Youkilis and now Corban Joseph... many could care less about Alex.  I would like to see the guy come back and be productive.  I also wonder if he can though.  In addition, I wonder about his future in pinstripes.  We wrote about it in WIPING AWAY ANYTHING AROD, saying "ARod was intentionally NOT placed on the Yankees season tickets. That's right, the Yankees most expensive player was absent from the Yankees advertising.  That speaks volumes to me. Why is it? Because it's my opinion that the Yankees are wiping clean anything Alex these days. They are tired of the controversy, the annoyance and the baggage that comes with Alex Rodriguez... and you're hearing this from me... a dude who actually likes ARod."

It's baby steps right now. Let's see what happens and Monday, if Alex walks out on the field in Tampa and begins his "baseball activities"... we'll inform you. After all, that's why we're here.

IT'S CORBAN JOSEPH!

Sure, earlier today I wrote that my gut thought David Adams would be the guy to get the call up if Kevin Youkilis went on the DL. Then Youk went on the 15 day DL, read HERE and Corban Joseph was called up. Read HERE. Good for him! Hey, I'm no baseball insider, I'm a fan like you! I don't take myself too seriously, I'm trying to have alittle fun here.

According to CBS Sports, "...The Yankees said Tuesday that Youkilis has a lumbar spine sprain.

Infielder Corban Joseph, who has never played in the major leagues, was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre."

Hey, we wish Corban Joseph a good game and hopefully a good 15 days. Do your thing kid, many of us want to see the kids up... So time for you to rise and shine!

WITHOUT YOUKILIS, THE YANKS ARE RUNNING OUT OF BODIES

This is what we can expect... expect Kevin Youkilis to officially hit the DL today.  Why? Because it's simple, Youk is taking too long getting better and the Yankees just can't wait any longer.  They need to make some sort of move. 

CBSSports.com reports (HERE):  "Yankees are likely to place Kevin Youkilis on the 15-day DL with a back injury... The third baseman has been battling a stiff lower back.

Youkilis, 34, underwent an MRI on Monday that showed no structural damage. He will receive an epidural, however."

So what happens now? Ronnier Mustelier? Nope, he's still battling a knee injury. That's been confirmed by someone "with knowledge of the Yankees farm hands" because everyone was emailing me wondering why Ronnier fell off the face of the earth.  It turns out, he's hurt too. What else is knew?

No, what will happen will be that the Yankees will place Youk on the DL most likely, and they will call up David Adams.  Adams will fill in as the 3rd third baseman of the season for the Yanks.  That's my opinion of course.

Again, CBSSports.com says this: "...the Yankees have been using utility man Jayson Nix at third base. Triple-A infield prospects Corban Joseph (.273/.347/.477 this year) and David Adams (.327/.417/.462) could get the call to fill the vacated roster spot. Neither has ever played in the big leagues."

My money is on Adams, I just have a gut feeling. My goodness, what has happened to this club and their injuries?

THE TORCH IS BEING PASSED

As the 2013 Yankees begin to take shape I can’t help but feel that we are seeing the transition from one era to the next.  Contracts are coming due, and our aging stars from the better part of the past two decades are on the stretch run of great careers.

Already at catcher we will see a new face.  Whether it be Francisco Cervelli, Chris Stewart, or Austin Romine, the team will now be a full catcher removed (Russell Martin) from the backstop of our core four – Jorge Posada.  A few years down the road there is a real possibility that highly touted prospect (he’s only 20, has good power, decent speed, and is above average defensively) Gary Sanchez will take over behind the plate.

At first base Mark Teixeira will be our foundation until at least 2017, so we are good there.

Second base is not a sure thing for us as much as we’d love it to be.  We have watched as Robinson Cano emerged on the scene with his electric arm, classic swing and infectious smile in 2005 and became the team’s best player.  However, his contract is up after next season and his agent is Scott Boras - not a good combination if you are a Yankees owner, read ROBINSON CANO: WHEN THE GOOD GO BAD for more insight on that.  It is quite possible that if the Steinbrenners decide to keep a lid on spending, Cano may end up playing second for someone else in 2014.

If that does happen, look for either David Adams or Corban Joseph (two promising players in the Yankees system) to be thrust into the limelight.

At shortstop the face of our team, our captain, and one of the greatest players to ever don pinstripes, Derek Jeter, enters the final two years of his contract.  One of two players that define this recent Yankee run of success now comes to the close of his storybook career.  We last watched as he had to be helped off the diamond after breaking his ankle, and we know that nothing will keep him from returning for the 2013 and 2014 seasons, but we have to face the fact that sooner rather than later we’ll be saying our goodbyes to the most beloved of players.  Waiting behind him is a work-in-progress, Eduardo Nunez, who has already shown promise at the plate and on the base paths, but who still requires some development on the field.  The 25 year-old will never be able to replace Jeet, but over time he will prove to be an adequate (if not above average) shortstop.

Third base has become the resting ground of one-year contracts for aging veterans as Alex Rodriguez has suffered through injury-riddled, unproductive seasons over the last two years.  In 2013 Kevin Youkilis (I can’t believe I can no longer refer to him as “Kevin USEliss”, it still feels strange) will man the hot corner for the “Bombers” while ARod and his never-ending contract remain on the sidelines recuperating from yet another hip surgery.  Whether ARod will ever be productive again as a third baseman remains to be seen, and chances are that when he does return his time in the field will be very limited.  The future at this position remains wide open to speculation.

One “in-house” possibility is the aforementioned David Adams.  While at Double-A Trenton last season, Adams played 23 games at third.  It may be in preparation for one day occupying that spot in the Bronx.

Our outfield is seemingly always in flux.  Curtis Granderson is on a one-year contract and borrowed time, “Swish” is gone, hopefully to be replaced by Ichiro, and Gardner will be coming back from spending most of last year on the DL.  There should be good speed to cover the entire field and three left-handers to add to the lineup.  On the farm sit the top two prospects in the system – Mason Williams and Slade Heathcott.  As Baseball America puts it:

“Outfielders Mason Williams, Slade Heathcott and Tyler Austin and catcher Gary Sanchez need more time to develop, but all are candidates to become the first homegrown Yankees to crack the big league lineup on a consistent basis since Brett Gardner in 2008.”

So while Granderson and Ichiro keep the spots warm, center field and right field appear to be well represented in the near future.

The pitching corps will soon see a changing of the guard as well.  Sure, CC, Hughes, Nova and David Phelps will all still be battling for rotation spots for the next few years, but our big Texan southpaw Andy Pettitte, and 39 year-old Hiroki Kuroda only have a short time left before hanging up the cleats.  We can hope that Michael Pineda is able to bounce back from his injury and live up to the promise that brought him to New York. 

In the bullpen the change will be even more dramatic.  The other face of the franchise (with Derek Jeter), and the one most connected to the run of championships over the past 15 years – Mariano Rivera – will soon leave giant shoes to fill at the closer spot.  There has never been a better relief pitcher in the history of the game, and his successor can only hope to be half the stopper that “Mo” has been.  The candidates are few.  Double A Trenton’s  Mark Montgomery is only 22, but already there is talk that he may be the closer-in-waiting.  Other possibilities include veteran relievers Joba Chamberlain and David Robertson.  Both are blessed with “stopper” stuff, but neither has proven that they can handle that role.

The 2013 season will be full of familiar faces for the Yankees, and if all can stay healthy it may bring another division title or perhaps more to New York.  I know I’ll watch it all unfold and cheer on my favorite team, but deep inside there will be a hint of sadness in knowing that this year may be the last of a great run.  I am certain that one day I’ll look back at these past 17 seasons with reverence for all that this generation of Yankees has accomplished.

WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN TO EDUARDO NUNEZ?

It’s been awhile since we have heard anything about Eduardo Nunez. Sure he was out for a while with a hand injury so that makes sense, but he’s back now. There has been a lot of buzz this season from the kids in Triple-A but it feels like he is barely a blip on the radar screen so I can’t help but wonder….does Nunez have a future as a Yankee?

The last time I heard Girardi talk about Nunez in great detail it was on the Joe Girardi show a few weeks ago. He didn’t even give many specific examples, it was more of one of those encouraging, vague answers that he gives sometimes. In fact, all he said was that Nunez was “working hard” and that the Yankees “still see him as the future everyday shortstop.” He has missed a lot of time and his numbers aren’t anything to brag about with a .242BA but we are getting close to that time of year when September call ups are just around the corner. With the lack of news about him, I just don’t know that he fits in the future plans of this team. Here is what I do see….

Brandon Laird: He’s no stranger to us, we saw him last year during September call ups and he is very versatile. Brandon Laird can play first, third and even left field. Laird is very good defensively, he has even won a Gold Glove down in the minors. I wonder if the Yankees would’ve lost Eric Chavez to injury if he would’ve had a chance to fill in our bench. Laird also had an amazing month of July with a .313BA and for the year he has 27 doubles, 13 homeruns, and 67 RBIs so it is hard not to notice him.

Kevin Russo: He has also missed significant time on the disabled list this year, but since coming back in late June he has been a constant hitter with a .299BA and a .381 average against lefties. He also has good speed on the bases and has successfully stolen 14 bases in 19 attempts. He is also a utility infielder that can play almost anywhere in the infield so what he lacks in power he makes up in other areas. I think he and Nunez share similar strengths, but given the struggles Nunez has with his defense Russo seems to be a safer bet as a long term option in Triple-A. He is not on the 40-man roster, so he wouldn’t steal a call up from Nunez but he could be stealing some of his thunder.

Corban Joseph: He hasn’t been on the Triple-A team that long, but he has made a big impression in that short time. His offensive has cooled off lately, but when he first joined the team he was hitting .281. In the short time he has played he already has 28 RBIs, and almost as many walks (36) as he does strikeouts (41). I like Corban because I think he has a good eye and plays a sound second base. He also has extra value with some previous experience at third base as well.

Ramiro Pena: There isn’t much to say about him that we don’t already know. Pena can play shortstop, second and third base so he has a lot to offer. I think defensively, he may be one of the best prospects…but we know when it comes to offense he isn’t going to give you much. Nunez may have an advantage on him in this case, but Pena won’t cause as many errors. It’s a toss-up here, but I have to wonder if being on a team that has won a World Series ring before can overlook his short comings.

I have always said that the Yankees have a strong farm system, but when I look at the other infielders I see a lot of similarities with Nunez. It’s hard to be an infield prospect for the Yankees to begin with because you are in the shadows of Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, ARod, and Mark Teixeira, and you are a small finish in a big pond of minor league talent. All of these guys have something to offer, and everyone in this article except for Russo is also on the 40-man roster. As much as I hate to say it, Nunez is stuck in a utility infield log jam and he is competing for a job and I hope he can prove those who doubt him wrong.

WHY A LOSS TO THE SOX THIS TIME OF YEAR AIN'T BAD

Of course it’s awesome whenever the Yanks beat the Red Sox whether it’s in March or October, but when they lose to them in March, like last night, it doesn’t sting all that bad.

Personally, I worry about the starting pitcher the most in these spring games. I want to see them shake off the rust, and see them work on some things. Ivan Nova was able to do that on Tuesday. Nova pitched four shutout innings against the Sox, allowing just two hits, while punching out three and not allowing a free pass. Mariano Rivera and Boone Logan followed Ivan Nova, and they each pitched one scoreless inning while punching out a batter.David Phelps followed Boone Logan and pitched 2.2 solid innings, allowing just two hits on five strikeouts while allowing an un-earned run, which, unfortunately, cost the Yankees the game. The lone run scored on a throwing error by outfielder Zoilo Almonte and another fielding error by infielder David Adams in the ninth inning allowing Pedro Ciriaco to score for the Sox in the ninth inning.The Yanks mustered up just four hits last night along with the Red Sox. One of those Yankee hits came off the bat of Russell Martin, another one from ARod, one from second baseman Corban Joseph, and one from Andruw Jones.

Yanks lose 1-0. For all we know, Bobby Valentine is celebrating this win although it's spring training. Doesn't matter to me, I'm just glad Nova pitched well and the Yanks got their PA's in and no one got hurt, because, in the end, that's what spring training is all about.

The Yankees will play the Blue Jays today and the game will not be televised.
