THE YANKS HAVE A GOLD GLOVE IN SOMERSET & CONTINUED EXCUSES IN THE BRONX

Cade Smith won a Gold Glove. Maybe somebody should send the tape to the Bronx.

Smith is a sixth-round pick out of Mississippi State who led Double-A Somerset with 24 starts this year. He had a 5.27 ERA, so there’s work to do on the mound. But once the ball came off the bat? He handled 38 chances, more than any pitcher in the minors, and started three double plays. One pitcher in all of full-season Minor League Baseball got a Gold Glove. It was this kid. That comes from Somerset Patriots on MiLB.com

Good for him. Now explain the big club to me.

Anthony Volpe won a Gold Glove once. Then the wheels fell off. We’ve seen him make the plays, which is exactly why it drives me nuts when a routine throw goes sideways. And this goes well beyond Volpe. Cover first. Hit the cutoff man. Give your first baseman a throw he can catch. Why does any of this sound like a wish list?

The Yankees love to talk about player development. Fine. What are you teaching in Somerset? What are you reinforcing in Scranton? And when a guy gets to the Bronx and his habits start slipping, who’s getting on him about it?

Cade Smith knows his job continues after he lets go of the baseball. The Yankees ought to remember theirs continues after a kid gets called up.
