VIDAL NUNO'S STILL GOT IT!

Source: Matt Hazlett/Getty Images North America
Good news for Vidal Nuno. You remember him, right? He was with the Yankees for 1 hot minute.  Well, word on the street is he found a new team... the Tampa Bay Rays.

CBSSports.com writes:

Source: Brian Davidson/Getty Images North America
"Nuno signed a minor-league contract with the Rays on Wednesday... He will likely see more time at Triple-A Durham next season, unless he's able to show that he can still be a viable reliever in the majors."

I was also a fan of this lefty.  I knew he wasn't going to be a superstar, but I appreciate his poise and determination every time they handed him the ball.

Wish Nuno well... he's one of the good ones.

VIDAL NUNO'S MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF

Photo: Elaine Thompson The Associated Press
I always like Vidal Nuno.  I love a lefty most of the time, but I liked and appreciated Nuno when he was with the Yankees back in 2013 and 2014, even though he only pitched 22 games in pinstripes, I always felt like he would develop into something special.

Photo: Kim Klement/USA Today Sports
Nuno went to the Diamondbacks, then Seattle, then the Dodgers.  Now, he's on the move again.

The Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles have acquired Nuno from the Dodgers.

"Orioles added another piece to their pitching depth Sunday, acquiring left-handed reliever Vidal Nuño in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers

The Orioles will send minor league right-hander Ryan Moseley, who pitched at short-season Class-A Aberdeen last season, to the Dodgers in the deal."

And just like that, another former Yankee kid gets a boost going somewhere, this time to a division rival.

I wish the guy luck.

Anyway, just keeping you in the loop.

MURPHY, HICKS & KNOWING WHAT THE HELL YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT

There's always good and bad points made when trades happen.  As many of you know, Jose Pirela and JR Murphy were traded today.  Pirela went to San Diego for righty Ronald Herrera. JR Murphy went to the Twins for Aaron Hicks, an outfielder.

On it's surface, Yankee fans are sad to see our guys go, which is perfectly normal and here's why; Yankee fans over the past 4 to 5 years, and as long as I'm heading BYB...root hard for "our kids".  When our kids go, we feel as though they weren't given enough time.  That's the bottom line.

Pirela was drafted as a SS and eventually was a second baseman and did some outfield work for the Yanks.  But at 25, the once Top Prospect was now just a kid that the Yankees needed to flip.  And yes, he was a Top Prospect.  Not our words, Newsday's words, read HERE... MLB's words, see below...

Bottom line, it would have been nice to see Pirela blossom in pinstripes, but he'll be fine in San Diego.

The Yankees get Ronald Herrera, a righty. A decent pitcher and someone the Yankees will definitely use. Bottom line, he will grow.. Breaking down Brendan Kuty's piece in NJ.com, "IS HE ANY GOOD? Before the 2014 season, Baseball America and MLB.com each ranked Herrera, of Venezuela, in the Oakland A's top 20 prospects. Then Oakland traded him to the Mariners for a player to be named later in May 2014. MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo once said Herrera's fastball reached 94 mph and he's got a solid curveball, possessing the makings of a "solid big league starter" at some point. He earned Texas League Pitcher of the Week honors once in 2015."

Then there was JR Murphy, the back up to Brian McCann that, let's be honest, may have stuck around if Gary Sanchez wasn't tearing up the Arizona Fall League right about now.  We get Aaron Hicks in return, who has decent defensive skills and definitely someone that will be utilized in our outfield. I'm excited about him to be honest.

ESPN writes: "Hicks, 26, could serve as a fourth outfielder, the job held this past season by Chris Young, now a free agent. But it also could be the precursor to a bigger move; the Yankees might be shopping Brett Gardner, according to reports out of the GMs meetings in Boca Raton, Florida, this week.

Gardner, an eight-year veteran who is second only to Alex Rodriguez in length of service with the Yankees, was their starting left-fielder and one of two position-player All-Stars in 2015...Hicks, a switch-hitter, has played in parts of three big league seasons for the Twins, who made him the No. 14 overall pick in the 2008 amateur draft.

His best season came in 2015, when he hit .256 with 11 home runs and 33 RBIs in 97 games, 88 of them in center field."

There is definitely growth and an upside to having Hicks on the Yankees.  And the good thing about Bleeding Yankee Blue is we have all opinions here. Ike Dimitriadis   wrote PIRELA AND MURPHY ... GONE! today. His glaring point was the following when speaking of the parting of Murph and Pirela:

"Both players were popular in the clubhouse and the fans, so you’re not alone if these don’t sit well with you."

The opinion is valid and his own and I applaud that because it goes back to what I said earlier.  Many Yankee fans want to see our guys grow, not traded away. It's very personal with us.  But let's keep it real, they are opinions and that's what makes BYB different from every other publication out there. My writers all have different takes on different stories.

I was annoyed by a snarky unneeded comment today on BYB:

"...it's always the same story here - trade marginal prospects and you guys are up in arms. You can also never give cashman any credit. I remember on this site when Nuno was traded it was like they traded the second coming of Ron Guidry."

First of all, if you really read us regularly sir, you'd know a few things.  Ron Guidry is a God to me and while Vidal Nuno was decent, he was no Ron Guidry.  What he was, was a lefty pitcher, and me being a lefty myself, I instantly an consumed because I appreciate the southpaw and ALWAYS root for them. Your wise ass comment is ridiculous and wrong.

Secondly, BYB has all opinions... ALL OPINIONS.  We have a story about Stephen Strasburg and how BYB writer Dan Lucia wants him in pinstripes... BADLY I might add, read HERE.  Tomorrow Mike O'Hara has a counterpoint argument. He doesn't want the guy.   We do that with Mark Teixeira, with Joe Girardi, Brian Cashman, Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner... what the hell are you reading that you're so wrong?

Bottom line... I like that we moved JR Murphy for Aaron Hicks... Ike doesn't, but tomorrow we get up and work together on some more posts for the BYB audience to read.  That's because we don't take this stuff as seriously as brain surgery. It's baseball... it's the rumor mill... it's a fucking game, bra.  Chill.

To Herrera... to Hicks... welcome to the Bronx.  To Murphy and Pirela... good luck. You were good soldiers in New York, but it's time to turn the page.

BRANDON McCARTHY & JASON HAMMEL COULD BE BRONX BOUND!

Anyone that follows the Yankees knows that Brandon McCarthy was phenomenal for us down the stretch.  With a broken down rotation, McCarthy came in and rose to the occasion.  You can't get down on him at all... there were many games the Yankee offense couldn't score for him.  But there is no question he showed up and kept the club in every game.  Gotta love some McCarthy.

Now comes word that the Yankees really love him and want him back.  I stand and say "Bravo!" Go get him back!

According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, he and Jason Hammel are both on the radar:

"The Yankees are targeting Brandon McCarthy, Jason Hammel and others in that mid-rotation category for their staff... McCarthy was a revelation for the Yankees, performing superbly after coming from Arizona. He was 7-5 with a 2.89 ERA as a Yankee after being acquired from Arizona for Vidal Nuno after going 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA with the Diamondbacks.

Hammel was brilliant with the Cubs, then not quite as good with the A's. Overall, he was better than McCarthy, though, going 10-11 with a 3.47 ERA."

Hammel has been a guy we've talked about here on BYB off and on for a few years now.  Who knows how serious the Yankees are in pursuing him.

One thing's for sure, we need to lock up McCarthy... that's a must.

THE UPS & DOWNS OF BRIAN MCCANN

The Yankees have not yet seen the real Brian McCann. At least, this is what I am choosing to believe. On paper, this signing was amazing. Sometimes, things don't always come to fruition and this season it didn't. I do believe that 2015 will be a different story. As tough as this season was for McCann there is one thing that he excelled at and I can't take that away from him....

Watching McCann sometimes made me cringe this season, but while he struggled offensively he really did a good job working with the pitchers and calling games. It's not easy transitioning not only to a new league but he found himself in New York of all places after spending 9 years with the Braves. Oh and not to mention that he basically had to learn two different starting rotations in the same season.

No one likes excuses, but losing four of the starts in July required a lot of adapting. It was probably hard enough to get a routine with an entirely new pitching staff but after getting in a groove with CC Sabathia, Ivan Nova, Michael Pineda and Masahiro Tanaka they all go down for the count. There is nothing like getting a routine down and then having to change it up. Baseball players are creatures of habit after all.

Yankee management had to make the adjustments needed to right the ship again, and so did McCann. The Yankees threw Vidal Nuno, Shane GreeneBrandon McCarthy, and Chris Capuano into the mix. I give McCann a lot of credit for being versatile. It's hard to just transition that fast but he also did it with the pressure of knowing that the Yankees were on the outside looking in and trying to get to the postseason. The pitching was a strength for us this year despite all of the injuries, we adapted. So did McCann, and I think that reason alone shows us that he really is a strategic, and smart catcher.

Putting McCann in the batters box wasn't as easy for him. This season definitely was not good for him offensively. I look back at his first month in pinstripes and even I was cringing. His numbers were very similar to what Chris Stewart did for us last year and to me that was shocking. No offense to Stewart, but McCann has the reputation of a power hitter. The combination of high pop up rates, low walk rate and a lot of swing and misses outside of the zone were shocking to see. The lack of timely hitting also became frustrating. McCann definitely didn't live up to expectations this year....but the good news is 2014 is in the books and next year should have less pressure.

I think Hal Steinbrenner said it best when he recapped the season, read STEINBRENNER ISSUES APOLOGY TO FANS. A lot of players under performed, and McCann is one of them. In the long run, I do think he will be a good signing for us. It's time to turn the page....and dominate next season.

BASEBALL IS MY LIFE: THE ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE

I wanted to introduce you to my friend Mike.  Mike & I recently had a discussion about the Yankees and baseball.  I asked him to write about something baseball related that I could never see in New York City. His answer was simple... the Arizona Fall League.  That was followed by a "Got me." Next thing you know, Mike's convincing me to post a piece on his experience at the AFL. And here it is.  Enjoy this, I did.  Hey Mike... you're published! Congrats...

Baseball is my life and the New York Yankees are what keep my heart beating.

Living out here in Arizona, it does not allow me to see them too often. They come and play the Diamondbacks every so often, and when that happens, trust me, I'm there. When the Yanks are here, downtown Phoenix turns into a mini-version of the Bronx.  Being such a storied franchise with national exposure helps that.  For me though, a die-hard Yankee fan in Arizona, it's just not enough. Sure, I have MLB Extra Innings so I can get the games, but somehow, it's just not the same as stepping into Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

Opening day is the day I live for. I live for the first pitch, the first hit, the first run, the first stolen base and all the other firsts that happen as a new season begins.  Once the last out of the World Series hits, alittle part of me dies. Though, much like you, it's a little easier when my beloved Yankees are the Champs!

So, you're wondering... what's the point of all this? Right?  Bleeding Yankee Blue's Robert Casey asked me if I would like to write about something that he would not get to experience if only living in New York. Well, there is something, and it's fantasic! It's probably the best month and a half of my year. It's a little thing called the Arizona Fall League.

The Arizona Fall League starts at the end of the regular season in early October and runs till Mid-November. There are 6 teams filled with prospects from every Major League team. Each teams chooses 7 kids to send to refine their skills and get extra playing time. The six teams each have a roster of 35 kids or so, from all teams and they play together on one. I've been going to these games on a steady basis for about the last 5 years. It costs me $85 for a season pass. The season pass allows me to go to as many games as I want at any of the 6 stadiums.

Since I've been going to these games, I've gotten to meet many notable players in today's game. A couple years ago I got to see Mike Trout and Bryce Harper take the field together on the same team. It's allowed me an up-close look at Aroldis Chapman and Yasiel Puig

Last year, the top prospect in all of baseball, Byron Buxton was here. I'm not here to write about players from other teams though. I'm here to share my experience with the kids the Yankees have sent.

Within the past couple of years, I've gotten to see Preston Claiborne, Dellin Betances, David Phelps and Austin Romine. Some of the notable prospects that have been here in the last couple years have included Slade Heathcott, Mason Williams, Manny Banuelos and Tyler Austin

(In Photo: Former Yankee, Vidal Nuno)
Players that are not on the Yankees anymore but on other teams rosters have included Ian Kennedy, Vidal Nuno, Phil Hughes, David Adams and Brandon Laird

Any time I can chat with the Yankee kids, I do. I love the opportunity because I can get to know these guys more closely.  Most are really good kids within this low pressure situation. It's a good give and take with the fans for the most part, until of course some ass wants to get 20 autographs in 1 meeting.  Not only is that ridiculous, it's rude, to the players, to the fans.

I get one ball a year and have the kids from the Yankees sign it, then let them go to do their thing with the occasional "Hi, How you doing?" thrown in. You treat these kids with respect.  That's key.

The Arizona Fall League is a great time, and I highly recommend it if you're ever in Arizona during it's season. In addition to watching these kids play, meeting them, shaking hands in a fun atmosphere, some of the legends come out too.  Last year I got to meet some guy named Joe Torre. A couple years before, I met Don Mattingly

I've even met Reggie Jackson. You never know who you'll meet, and that's one of my favorite parts.

If you've never seen the kids perform in the Arizona Fall League, I encourage you to check it out.  There is terrific talent, a great time at the parks, the weather's great and the memories last forever.  It's extra baseball after the season ends.  It's the AFL, and it's awesome.

Mike, we enjoyed your piece about the Arizona Fall League. We appreciate it.  Oh, and to our BYB audience, be sure to thank Mike.

THE YANKEES ARE GETTING THEIR GROOVE

It hasn't been easy, but now what we're seeing are the little things... and when many little things cluster, moments happen.  We've seen Yankee moments for years. We've seen the big seasons, like 1998.  Maybe we remember the magic of 2009 when there were comebacks galore.  This year, we've struggled to get there, but sometimes a player of 2 added to the mix offers a "jolt" to a franchise.  Maybe that "jolt" gets a team going.

Say what you will about Brandon McCarthy, but he's making it happen out there.  He's in the zone and I welcome what he's brought to the table. Vidal Nuno who?

McCarthy went 6, gave up 4 hits and 1 run.  He struck out 5.  The best part, I purposely watched the game today and NOT his wife's tweets.  I did find this one funny though:
She's a rip.

The Yankees scored 4 runs today.  In the fourth, Chase Headley singled, knocking in Brett Gardner.  In the 5th, Francisco Cervelli and his recent hot bat doubled and Ichiro scored. Then Brett Gardner sacrificed home Cervelli.

Later, that's when Brian McCann had a big RBI double in the 8th.That was a big deal... to him, to the Yankees and definitely to you and me.  I feel like this guy's been struggling with the bat.  It's a good thing and I hope he starts to get going now... we could definitely use his offense.

Nice day... nice game and the Yanks appear to be rolling. Is that possible?

Final: Yankees 4 - Rangers 2

The Yankees are winning ladies and gentlemen... smile.

JEFF FRANCIS? YUP, I'LL TAKE THE LEFTY

The trade for Brandon McCarthy was the start of it the other day.  The Yankees know they need to upgrade. While I didn't want to see Vidal Nuno go, I knew it was important to upgrade with a seasoned starter and I was semi-excited about McCarthy, but I was torn about Nuno leaving. I think, down the road it could prove to be a smart pickup by Cashman.

Now the Yankees have acquired lefty starter Jeff Francis. The Daily News has it:

"The Yankees made a minor move Friday afternoon to add pitching depth, but presumably have more of this kind of work to do in the wake of Thursday’s news that Masahiro Tanaka has a partially-torn elbow ligament. The Yanks acquired lefty Jeff Francis from Oakland, both teams announced. The Yankees said they got the 33-year-old Francis and cash in exchange for a player to be named later, though the Athletics’ Twitter account said the deal was Francis to the Yanks for cash."

As I also read it, I then read comments from people on Facebook and Twitter that were literally the equivalent of raping and pillaging my village. Everyone is angry, but everybody needs to calm down! Fans always think that they have it figured out. But fans, me included, aren't dealing with big contracts, money, injuries, personnel, the other teams and the players that we all want. Brian Cashman is doing the best job he can under the circumstances of that very moment. In other words, Jeff Francis became available, and he went for it.  Is it considered a band-aid situation? Not necessarily, but it appears to be that way because Francis hasn't exactly been lights out these days. Plus, it was a cash for player deal, so it's not "major news".

I will tell you what Francis is though... he's decent, and a lefty, and that will fill the CC Sabathia void for a bit at least.

Also, I personally don't think Cashman is finished. I believe there will be more trades and more pickups. The Yankees know what they need to do and they hear it from the fans every day.  One thing they will HAVE to do is fix the problems we've had all season. They also know that in the back of their mind, they cannot repeat NOT making it to the playoffs again. Trust me, it won't' happen.

Do me a favor BYB family, wish Jeff Francis good luck.  The guy will do fine for us...

WHY BRANDON MCCARTHY MATTERS: BYB FANS SPEAK OUT

I love sharing all types of opinions on players and their ability and how the fans really feel!  After all, Bleeding Yankee Blue was build by fans, for fans and we take all sides here.  Mike O'Hara and I don't always agree on stuff, but we're tight and we share different opinion on BYB all the time.  Look at Mike and Jeana Bellezza and the Mark Teixeira saga. Suzie Pinstripe loves and believes in David Phelps as a Yankee starter, and for a while there, I loved Nuno. At the end of the day though BYB has a variety of opinions and it don't get better than what you read here.

Anyway, there have been some interesting thoughts on the new acquisition of Brandon McCarthy.  Some love him, some don't.  Me? I think he's got talent, I think we shouldn't have traded Vidal Nuno away for him and I think his wife is pretty cute, but I was shocked to see such wide spread opinions about McCarthy's abilities and the Yankees signing of him.

(In Photo: Amanda McCarthy)
When Steve Skinner wrote  HEY BRIAN, WHO DO YOU THINK YOU'RE FOOLING? the other day, McCarthy was a hot topic.  I wanted to share some really good comments for all of you to check out. Enjoy this:

Dan wrote:

"I really don't understand how people are upset about this deal. Yes, McCarthy will not save the season, but Cashman gave up literally nothing for him and he is a marginal upgrade - every win counts. Sure, Nuno is 4 years younger than McCarthy (he'll turn 27 in a few weeks and McCarthy just turned 31 yesterday), but he has significantly worse stuff, has absolutely no track record in the majors, and hasn't really pitched better recently - if you've actually watched his last few starts, it's pretty obvious that he's been very lucky - a lot of hard hit balls right at defenders. Meanwhile, McCarthy it seems (if you look at all of the advanced metrics) has been pretty unlucky, and will hopefully get hot.

Being younger doesn't necessarily mean being better - I'm younger than Brian Roberts (who, by the way, has an OPS over .700 which isn't bad for a 2nd baseman and has been crushing the ball recently), but I would probably strike out 500+  times a season in the majors.

Also, perhaps most importantly, McCarthy pitches more innings per start that Nuno, which makes the trade worthwhile even if he pitches the same as he has all year, unless you want Adam Warren and Dellin Betances to miss the 2015 season because their arms fall off from being extremely overworked.

(In Photo: Addison Russell)
I'm sure Cashman is still looking for other trades; yesterday he said that they were going really hard for both of the Cubs' pitchers, but simply could not compete with the A's headliner of Russell, which is totally true. Unfortunately, the Yankees can't trade prospects/players they don't have. And even if all Cashman does is make a bunch of smaller trades to make the Yankees be more competitive in the terrible AL East and hope that the team gets hot if they reach the playoffs, that's fine too - it means he's not sacrificing the future by trading away the few useful prospects the team actually does have."

Travis wrote:

"Have to disagree with this article. "Intelligent" Yankee fans know the team has nothing in their system they could package for Price.  Even Samardzija was sort of a long-shot. Hammel was more likely, and Cliff Lee if we wanted to eat the salary.

McCarthy's Sabremetric stats indicate he's been throwing better than his ERA says (3.79 FIP), plus there's always the age-old "change of scenery" benefit. He's moving to a contending team. Cashman isn't trying to fool anyone - he just has no one to deal.

(And let's be honest; Even if he made a deal for Price, Samardzija, or anyone else, fans would just overreact about Cashman "trading the future" for another "aging star" like always.)"

To Dan and to Travis... thank you for your comments!

God, I love my Bleeding Yankee Blue family!

WHY I'M NOT SOLD ON BRANDON MCCARTHY

I have been sitting and stewing over this trade for 3 days now, and I still just don't like it. I hear some people jumping up and down for joy that Vidal Nuno is gone and I get it....he didn't do his job and we needed a change. Some people think this is already a good move because he is gone, well I am not ready to throw a celebration parade just yet.

No offense to Brandon McCarthy because he really is a smart guy and I have read a lot of articles on him and about his approach he has taken over the years but I just don't think he is our answer. In my eyes, this trade is a wash. Sure we gained a harder throwing pitcher because he definitely has more gas than Nuno, but to say he has struggled this year with the Arizona Diamondbacks is an understatement.

Look, stats can tell you a lot of things about a player, but McCarthy has been playing in my backyard since 2013 so I am familiar with him. I have watched him many times and I have come to conclusions that a stat on baseballreference.com isn't going to describe well. I have SEEN how he has earned that 5.01ERA and 15HRs allowed. Those 15HRs are the most he has allowed since 2006 when he was with the White Sox and even back then he only gave up 17 for the year. Clearly, he is going to surpass that. He has already given up 61 earned runs this year, he gave up 68 last year with the Diamondbacks. Yet another record he is on pace to break. Right now he has a 3-10 record on the season which is right on track with his 5-11 record from 2013. His best years are behind him, and this isn't exactly an upgrade for us.

Not to take anything from McCarthy's career because he has had some great success, but that was back in 2011 and 2012 when he was playing for the Oakland A's. During this time he really adapted the beliefs of Bill James and Sabermetrics. If you are a Moneyball freak like I am, you know what that means. He really reinvented his game and added a cutter and a two-seam fastball to his pitching arsenal that helped him focus on keeping the ball on the ground. This helped him keep the ball in the park, and cut his walk rates in half. His best years were with the Oakland Athletics, and after that he became a Diamondback where suddenly he turned into a completely different pitcher.

There is no doubt that he had the most success in Oakland, and when McCarthy came to Arizona in 2013 fans here were crazy over this guy. They were in love with him and were already calling the World Series here. It was a pre-success parade here. McCarthy's mechanics quickly deteriorated and he became injury prone. Despite pitching in a more pitcher friendly ball bark the home runs started to take over and the ground balls disappeared. When he did get the ground ball, the very poor Diamondbacks defense would usually botch an easy play that should've been made. He has been a victim of bad pitching and bad defense and in a much more pitching friendly league. I'm sure you can see where I am going with this.....

Some people say McCarthy is an upgrade, and he is not. The National League West is going to be a walk in the park compared to what he is walking into now. The parks there are bigger and they can be more forgiving to him now that he is more of a fly ball pitcher. If he is 3-10 in the NL West....how on earth can Brian Cashman think that is going to translate out in the American League East? I just cringe thinking about watching him pitch to say....Jose Bautista. Can you see that image? Not pretty. Especially not if it is in Yankee stadium because that ball is gone. Sure, he is a veteran arm and he could give us some more length which we desperately need right now but if he is serving up cookies in the game and our offense doesn't remember how to hit then we are screwed. Even if he gives us 6 strong innings (which is average for him) if he gives up 3 or 4 runs that could be too much for us to come back from.

I know Nuno wasn't exactly doing a great job but we made a trade for an injury prone pitcher who is holder, doesn't even eat enough innings and is going to add more insult to injury. We traded Nuno for a very similar but older pitcher. It doesn't make sense to me. If Cashman is trying to eat up innings and take on the workload that CC Sabathia would take on for instance, this again isn't the answer. Does the Yankee rotation need help? Absolutely. Were we in a position to compete for Jeff Samardzija or Jason Hammel? No, we didn't have anything to barter with but this is definitely a huge risk. It's not about giving up Nuno.....it's about trading for just as big of a concern.

So Cashman, I am really not sure what the heck you were thinking. I am not sure if you tripped and hit your head or if you really think McCarthy is the answer to our prayers, but I think you are crazy. I hope you prove me wrong, because if you don't....you have some serious explaining to do.

Welcome to the Bronx McCarthy, we are counting on you!
