WHEN THE MIGHTY FALL...

They stir the pot a little.

The Winter meetings are over and the hot stove was in full gear and even though it's over the rumors are still flying. The Gerrit Cole and Manny Machado rumors are still flying out there but now after the Yankees won the Giancarlo Stanton sweepstakes new rumors are brewing....

The Yankees "Evil Empire" is back in action again so now maybe the Boston-New York rivalry is revived on a larger scale. If Boston has their way it just might be. After this past weekend it certainly looks like Boston may take troublemaker to a whole new level.

Willie J. Allen Jr / AP Photo
According to multiple sources, most notably the Boston Globe and NESN the Yankees recent acquisition of Stanton is only going to be a temporary residence. Hmmmm....interesting angle.

So basically both publications see Stanton playing in New York for 2018 and then getting shipped off to play in LA with the Dodgers, his number one choice. Now that the Dodgers shipped Adrian Gonzalez, Brandon McCarthy, Scott Kazmir and Charlie Culberson to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday my initial thought was "Well, the Dodgers just offloaded a ton of payroll so it looks like they are going to all out to get Bryce Harper."

I still think that. The Dodgers just shed 47 million dollars in payroll and have set themselves up to comfortably get under the 2018 luxury tax threshold. I think they will throw a large amount of money at him and "sell" him on getting back close to home in Las Vegas. He will also be wooed by the idea of playing across town from Mike Trout and playing in the freeway series against the best player in baseball and being the confident guy he is.....he will probably buy into that. I really think Harper wears a Dodgers uniform next year.

Patrick McDermott-USA TODAY Sports
But those Boston publications see Manny Machado as the answer to their prayers and the Yankees wanting Harper over Stanton because of his left handed bat. Boston wishes the Yankees would unload Stanton to get in a bidding war with the Nationals, Dodgers and undoubtedly Boston too.

I don't know who this "longtime major force" in baseball is that NESN sites but there is already a major force with a potential hell of a trifecta in the top of the Yankee lineup that hasn't been seen in a long time. Oh and why the hell would the Dodgers send the Yankees some of their top prospects to get Stanton when they an just go spend money, keep their prospects and sign Harper who is younger? Nick Cafardo didn't think that one through...

Kim Klement/USA Today Sports
Once Stanton gets a taste of the Bronx and hitting with Aaron Judge the Dodgers may be an afterthought....just like Boston and their crazy rumors. I guess you can't blame Boston for making up BS. They are green with envy at this point.

THE DODGERS ARE LEFTY LOCO!

Stop the presses, because I think the baseball world has seen a new version of insanity. I like unconventional methods and I am a fan of the idea of "trying anything once" but the Dodgers new strategy is either going to make them look like a bunch of amateurs or revolutionary geniuses. Only time will tell....

The Dodgers just signed left hander Scott Kazmir, and we wrote about the idea of signing Kazmir earlier this week in A LEFTY PITCHER WE NEED TO CONSIDER. The Yankees are definitely lacking that second lefty and while we could start the season with CC Sabathia as out only left handed pitcher, the Dodgers could have a FIVE MAN ROTATION with nothing but lefties. Hey Dodgers, quit being so greedy!

It's a crazy idea, and one that could be disastrous. I think about all of the stadiums in the NL West, mostly Chase Field in Arizona which is my backyard. It's definitely more hitter friendly and after watching the damage that a power righty could do against an all lefty rotation could quickly hurt the Dodgers.

I can already see Paul Goldschmidt launch a bomb to the left side of Chase Field. The Dodgers are probably going to have to make some adjustments, otherwise home games are going to be "must win" for them.

I tip my cap to the Dodgers though to try and be strategic here....but has this ever been done? It has, and we actually had success with an all lefty rotation back in 1983. We hold the highest number of starts with an all lefty rotation with 127 out of 162. Surprisingly, we still won 91 games but finished third in the division. So we have shown that it can be done, but a lot has changed since 1983.

Back in 1975 the Chicago White Sox also had a lefty heavy rotation and started 120 games this way. The White Sox aren't afraid of pitching with a bunch of lefties, after all they are tied for third of all time for lefty starters according to baseball-reference.com.

So maybe the Dodgers aren't completely crazy, but the game has changed so much over the years. It will be interesting to see how things change once Brandon McCarthy rejoins the team mid season from his injury. Then again, maybe this is a ploy for them to make a trade. Think about it, the Dodgers have a staff full of lefties, maybe then can use one as trade bait for a right hander. Maybe a team like the Yankees could make things interesting here.

Not to get too crazy here but maybe it could happen. We need a lefty, and the Dodgers need some righties. We have plenty of those. Would you be willing to give up someone on our staff for say....Scott Kazmir?

Do I think the Dodgers are crazy? Yes. Two of their rival teams have hitter friendly ball parks so that is a lot of strategy and pressure to perform on the road. I don't see or understand what the Dodgers are trying to do here if they indeed intend to keep an all lefty rotation. What do you think?

STAYING HEALTHY IS A FULL TIME JOB

Athletes will go to great lengths to ensure they are at their best but some do it the right way and others do it the wrong way.  Mark Teixeira has started off 2015 right by deciding to go gluten-free.  The other evening, there was a debate between Suzyn Waldman and John Sterling on whether or not Teixeira would have made it to first base on a ground ball hit to him instead of flipping the ball to CC Sabathia who has admittedly stated that he "isn't able to make that play anymore."  Mark has been injured over the last few years but many believe that he has made a real comeback this year, holding onto 2nd place in home runs in the AL.  He came to spring training lean and healthy and as I reap the benefits of no injuries and going lean myself as a runner heading into a half marathon in a few weeks, I can't help but feel that Teixeira has realized what many have overlooked over the years: Staying healthy is in fact, a full time job.

According to Runners Connect, going gluten-free can be viewed as the latest fad or nutritional therapy, "However, it has often been viewed in the media as a weight-loss or performance-enhancing diet backed by testimonials from a wide range of celebrities and athletes worldwide who don’t actually have a known gluten sensitivity, but follow the diet anyway in the belief that it is healthier. In fact, some have estimated that 15-25% of North Americans either adhere to a gluten-free diet or consume gluten-free products."  Mark Teixeira is one of many athletes who have gone gluten-free and has reaped the benefits it has had on his body.

Unfortunately, Josh Hamilton relapsed after he battled back from a drug and alcohol addiction.  "Hamilton left the Rangers after the 2012 season to sign a five-year, $125 million contract with the Angels. Two unproductive seasons were followed by a shoulder injury and then a relapse with drugs and alcohol for a player whose supreme natural talent and budding career were nearly waylaid by substance abuse a decade ago," reported USA Today.

Then there are guys, like Alex Rodriguez, who let the pressure mount and turned to illegal substances to enhance performance on the field.  At the start of this season, we saw a resurgence of a substance that tossed four players off the field and into suspension.  According to another article in USA Today, "The sudden rash in positive steroid tests among big leaguers – four pitchers, all caught with Stanozolol in their system – has Major League Baseball looking into any links between the cases and exploring why the old-school drug is popping up on tests again. The four players suspended for 80 games in a stretch of 16 days starting March 27 – David Rollins of the Seattle Mariners, Arodys Vizcaino of the Atlanta Braves, Ervin Santana of the Minnesota Twins and Jenrry Mejia of the New York Mets – are already one more than the number of players on 40-man rosters penalized for using performance-enhancing substances all of last year."

It is a hard pill to swallow when you hear of guys like Cardinal ace Adam Wainwright and former Yankee pitcher Brandon McCarthy hurt for common athletic injuries; an Achilles and ACL tear respectively.  Injuries happen all the time, even to the healthiest of us, like Mariano Rivera who went on the DL after shagging balls in the outfield as part of his full time health regiment.

If staying healthy is a full time job, then how come so many players abuse their youth, diet and athleticism and others work so hard to preserve their talent?  Damned if I know, but as I said to a good friend this week, you can only control your own self, emotion and body.

My advice: watch your diet, exercise daily and make good choices.  Youth is temporary but you are stuck with your body for the rest of your life.

BRANDON MCCARTHY & TOMMY JOHN UNIT... KIND OF

It sucks about what happened to former Yankee Brandon McCarthy... but it's happened and so, we'll see him at some point next year.  According to Ken Gurnick, MLB.com beat writer, McCarthy is going under the knife for a torn ulnar collateral ligament.
Brandon, meet Tommy John.  That really sucks. McCarthy made me really become a fan of his.  As a Yankee, he was truly exceptional and I like the guy a lot, but he went to the Dodgers clearly because the Yankees weren't too interested and I didn't get that at the time.

Oh... and I know you were wondering because I was... what does our pal Amanda McCarthy say about all this?  Well... just check her Twitter feed:

God bless her. I don't know what I get a kick out of more, her tweets or her avatar of her hubby squeezing her woman parts.

Anyway, Get well soon Brandon! We love ya over at BYB.

THE YANKEES COULD HAVE EASILY RE-SIGN McCARTHY

I found this interesting, especially coming off the blown signing of Yoan Moncada.  Apparently the Yankees track record of dragging their feet and not signing obvious players is a bad habit.  I blame Yankee brass who is pre-occupied with empty seats  the last 2 seasons.  Here's how I see it:
When you don't see the big picture, the fans stop coming and things start to crumble.  When things start to crumble, you see cracks in the walls. When you see cracks in the walls, you see players that could be signed through those cracks. When you see players that could be signed in those cracks and don't sign them, they get signed by other teams and your empty house falls down.... don't let your empty house fall down... get rid of cable and call DirecTV today.
OK, OK... I tried to be funny playing off the great Ad campaign by DirecTV.

Seriously though, it sucks.  Yankee brass and Brian Cashman need to wake up.

Back in Seprember, McCarthy told reporters that returning to the Yankees "would be hard to turn down." It was clear then that McCarthy and the Yankees just needed too make a deal.

That never happened, and now, months later and on the Dodgers, he said this, and the New York Daily News has it:

“In my mind, I thought it definitely was going to be the case,” he says, sitting at his locker at the Dodgers’ complex. “At least that’s where I was saying I wanted to go. At that point, I wasn’t considering anywhere else. It was perfect. It’s the Yankees. You don’t think money is going to be an issue. This is just going to be, ‘we’ll just find a way to make this fit.’”

This speaks volumes to me. The Yankees need to figure out their money trouble quickly, because if they don't, we'll not only be the laughing stock of the American League East... fans, as much as we love our team... will stop coming to the Bronx.  Why? Because the stars won't be stars at all. And we won't be winners. We'll be a bunch of guys clumped together with a bow around us and sold as "a winning team".

We're the Yankees.  That won't fly for us fans, will it?

BRANDON MCCARTHY TAKES ON PEDs HEAD ON

I like Brandon McCarthy.  I knew very little about him until he came to New York.  Then, I approved.  He was a solid pitcher for the Yankees in 2014, a breath of fresh air and now, I have tremendous respect for him as well. I'm a fan.  He helped me get there.

I'm a bigger fan after reading a fantastic piece he wrote in the Players' Tribune. You know, Derek Jeter's site.  It's about PEDs. It's about PEDs users and it's about the Hall of Fame.  In short, he wants the writers to consider admitting the PEDs players in the Hall of Fame:

"As it stands, the baseball writers are trying to have it both ways: they are acknowledging the existence of the steroid era by leaving obviously deserving candidates out of the Hall, while at the same time slowly giving them more votes as each year passes. To the Hall of Fame voters it may feel like progress, but to me it reeks of denial. This moral grandstanding under the auspices of being linked to steroids raises the concern that over time the buck will be passed to a younger generation of voters who will bear the responsibility of deciding on the Hall-worthiness of the great players from the steroid era.

The question of whether performance enhancing drug (PED) users should be allowed to gain admittance to the Hall of Fame is one that I’ve thought a lot about. Admittedly, it’s a mess. The ramifications extend far and wide, but I believe the answer is to admit those players whose on-field accomplishments merit it and leave history to be the final judge and jury. Ultimately, I believe the greatest injustice would be to leave worthy players—some of whom are objectively among the greatest ever—out of the Hall of Fame, when there very well may be guys already enshrined who have used performance enhancing drugs. Who knows how many PED users are already in the Hall of Fame? And in the future, who knows how many PED users, who managed to stay under the radar, will join them in Cooperstown? The true shame would be knowing that players who got away with using PEDs were voted in, while others connected to PEDs—either by proof, or worse yet, suspicion—continue to be left out and villainized."

Reading what he had to say... you won't believe what I'm about to write next...

Here's my take, and I've had this unusual change of heart lately. I don't know when the change occurred exactly, but as you know, I have always been angry about athletes who are PEDs users.  But this year, as the voting for the Hall of Fame came together, I thought about 2 things;

Why can't Don Mattingly get love from the writers? He was a legit hitter and fielder with 14 years in the Bigs and virtually has the same numbers as Kirby Puckett. What went wrong?

The second thing I thought about were guys like Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire.  Guys who probably started out clean, made history at many points in their careers and over time, no doubt dabbled in PEDs too.

I watched the way the voting played out this year and last, and looked at it closely and watched players who are probably less deserving in their careers get votes. Votes that probably should have been given to those guys above.  Not because of their PEDs use and record breaking near the end of their careers, but for what they did throughout their careers.  I can't believe I'm saying this, but it almost seemed like an obvious slight. That's because it was. The reality is... those writers, many of which don't deserve to vote in any election, aren't helping baseball at all even though they act like the moral police.

McCarthy said what many won't about Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds and the Hall of Fame. Something maybe not even you would say:

"It’s not going to be comfortable but sometimes things have to be done. These two guys dominated the game in ways we’ve never seen before."

Think about that. Once the writers start the realize that players less worthy shouldn't get in, sooner or later they'll look at guys like Clemens and Bonds.  Sooner or later, they'll think about what those guys did on the field.  Over time, maybe doing PEDs, to damage themselves isn't a universal thing, it's an individual thing. Sure, records become questionable, but here's a question for ya? When the hell did writers feel obligated to decide what the fans want?

I know, I know... a cheater's a cheater. But did Roger Clemens cheat 1 time or for 10 years? I don't know, do you?  How about Barry Bonds? No question these days his head  and build are much smaller than when he played.  But when did PEDs start for Barry?

Look, I hate the whole thing.  PEDs and baseball is icky, especially when you're trying to raise kids and keep them on the straight and narrow.  But I realized something reading Brandon McCarthy's piece.  Will this continue for years and years, or will a writer break rank and realize that 354 wins is an automatic vote into the Hall of Fame?

After all, John Smoltz had only 213 wins... and he's going to the Hall.

Opinions change, and while I'm hell bent on making my children understand cheating isn't right, I also was taken by what McCarthy had to say.  After all, he's a professional baseball player. He's a peer of these guys and he thinks it may be time.

More importantly, and this is an extension of McCarthy. The Players' Tribune are Derek Jeter's pages.  This is a man that's never touched the PEDs issue and never did them himself.  Suddenly there's a hot topic like performance enhancing drugs and Jeter, the Editor in Chief is deciding to allow a story about allowing PEDs users into the Hall of Fame. I find that fascinating. After all, Jeter's gotta sign off on that, and he did.  Sounds like he took back door advice from BYB.  Remember when we wrote JETER'S BIGGEST LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: SIGN AROD ?

So... the question...

Is it time to let PEDs users into the Hall of Fame? Should a writer break rank?  What do you think?  Comment... let me know. I'd love to hear what you have to say.

CHRIS CAPUANO & BUFFALO CHICKEN WINGS

I know what you may have been thinking before you clicked the link to read this post, “Where the hell are you going with this, Mikey? Too much eggnog, boss?” Nope, it’s nothing like that…I don’t drink eggnog…Guinness is my drink, if you are looking to buy me a round.

I enjoy bar food (pub grub if you will) as much as anybody. One of my all-time favorite items from any local watering hole’s bill of fare is Buffalo Chicken Wings. I don’t know why…they just work for me. I like them hot…not burn your pupils out hot, but hot all the same. Just a little burn to let you know they’re there. Anyway, while I was at Syracuse University I had a buddy from the Buffalo area that taught me the ins and outs of the wing culture that began in his hometown…including the origin story. Now granted this has become something of a “Tall Tale”, but for the sake of the post let’s all agree that this is one version shall we? Yahtzee.

Here goes…

One of the more prevalent claims is that Buffalo wings were first prepared at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, by Teressa Bellissimo, who owned the bar along with her husband Frank. Several versions of the story have been circulated by the Bellissimo family and others:

Upon the unannounced, late-night arrival of their son, Dominic, with several of his friends from college, Teressa needed a fast and easy snack to present to her hungry guests. It was then that she came up with the idea of deep frying chicken wings (normally thrown away or reserved for stock) and tossing them in cayenne hot sauce.

So there you have it, one of the many stories of the birth of the Buffalo Wing. At the end of the day it’s not all that important. What are important to me is the similarities in Mrs. Bellissimo and New York Yankee GM Brian Cashman. Follow me here if you will…

The Yankees announced recently that they re-signed journeyman pitcher Chris Capuano to a one year deal, read HERE. Look, I thought Cap did a fair job when he came to the Bronx last year. He isn’t flashy. He doesn’t have wipe out stuff and when he’s bad he is REALLY bad. In a way, Chris Capuano is the Buffalo Chicken Wings Cashman is trying to feed to the hungry, Yankee fan base that just barged into the Anchor Bar that is the off season hot stove.

We are hungry for a nice medium rare porterhouse steak (Mad Max) and a Kettle One on the rocks with as many olives as you can jam in the glass (AKA the Big Mike Martini, my Dad’s favorite). Instead an ill prepared Cashman is in the kitchen grabbing anything he can find to throw in the deep fryer and slathering it in tangy, hot sauce. He’ll toss in a few half priced pitchers (the kind you put beer in…no, not like David Wells) and tell us to dig in.

(In Photo: Teressa Bellissimo)
Now, luck and a stroke of genius were on Mama Bellissimo’s side that cold night Upstate. Her son and his pals loved the wings and they went on to the PUB GRUB HALL OF FAME…Cashman? His product seems sloppier. It would appear that he thinks we’ll be OK if he tosses Cap or someone of his ilk on the mound every 5th day with a side of celery, carrots and blue cheese dressing. THINK AGAIN, BRI!! That won’t cut it in the Bronx in 2015.

No offer was made to McCarthy. You let DRob take Sweet Home Alabama to Sweet Home Chicago. I don’t pretend to understand this guy any longer. No, I don’t think Robertson and McCarthy were MUST HAVES, but signing Capuano is like getting a piece of scotch tape and slapping it on a breaking dam.

I am fairly convinced that the Yankees will not spend to solve the problems they have in the rotation. But why does it make sense that they have questions about ARod so they make sure to sign Headley, but the have questions about THE WHOLE ROTATION and sign Chris Capuano?

We got Buffalo Chicken Wings, ladies & Gentlemen. They might taste good for a bit, but they won’t fill you up and when all is said and done they are really bad for you. Thanks, Brian. You are doing a bang up job.

CAPUANO RE-SIGNS: YOU CALL THAT A BARGAIN

Short post just to keep you guys in the loop.  Chris Capuano has resigned with the New York Yankees. That info comes from old reliable, Jack Curry of YES:
This is a bargain ladies and gentlemen. A lefty starter for 1 year and $5 million. For the Yankees last season, Capuano held his own and was a huge help with Brandon McCarthy when we needed them most.

Cap racked up a 4.25 ERA in 12 games for the Yanks.

To be honest, for 1 year, I'll take him again.

Welcome back Chris.

MEET THE BYB FAMILY: INTERVIEW WITH IKE DIMITRIADIS

We continue our interview series right now on BYB with another interview of another one of my great writers, Ike Dimitriadis.  If you haven't had a chance, be sure to check out the other interviews:

MEET THE BYB FAMILY: INTERVIEW WITH JEANA BELLEZZA

MEET THE BYB FAMILY: INTERVIEW WITH ERICA MORALES

MEET THE BYB FAMILY: INTERVIEW WITH STEVE SKINNER

And now, here's my buddy Ike. I hope you enjoy this... I sure did:

BYB: Ike. When did you become a Yankee fan?  What player sealed the deal for you and why?

Ike Dimitriadis: I became a fan when I was 5 years old, watching Yankee games with my dad. There were two guys that defined the team for me back then - Reggie Jackson and Ron Guidry. Reggie was the personality, the power, and home runs were very popular in the schoolyard. Guidry made it for me the night that he struck out 18 against the California Angels.

I still remember sitting on the sofa with my dad, counting down each strikeout. They had the old graphics, and when he broke the franchise record for strikeouts in a game, cheers turned into screams. I was sold!

BYB: What 1 move should the Yankees make this off-season that will turn Yankee fans heads and calm us all down a bit.

Ike Dimitriadis: The Yankees need to get a premier ace starter, either through free agency or through a trade. It did not feel like a downgrade until David Robertson and Brandon McCarthy took deals with other teams. I think the feeling is that the Yankees are remaining inactive, and that is a bad thing for the team and the fans. If they can sign Scherzer, it would be awesome, but it has to be someone at that level. Without an ace added to the roster, I think we have good reason to worry about the season.

BYB: Give me your immediate reaction when you read that David Robertson signed with the White Sox. Where were you, where did you read it?

Ike Dimitriadis: Of course I read it here! Where else would I have seen it??? I was not completely surprised, though I was obviously disappointed. When the Yankees went silent, I knew negotiations were not going well. I always liked him and his charity, High Socks for Hope. It is tough losing a player that you consider one of us. He came through our system, we developed him, and I am sure he is going to have a very successful career. I just wish it was here.

BYB: What's the best moment for you as a writer for BYB on your Feature day.  For the audience, a "Feature day" is when you headline that day... the top story.

Ike Dimitriadis: I have always considered it a privilege to write for BYB. Most people that know me know that I am very opinionated, but sometimes it is hard to present a thought or an opinion in a way that makes sense. To make things even more challenging, BYB is committed to providing high quality material for Yankee fans to enjoy and understand. I think our readers have come to expect that. Most people do not know how hard the writers work to get these pieces out, and I have the deepest respect for my fellow writers. My favorite moment is when it all comes together, whether it is the right collection of stats, or the right set of references, or even the imagery to tell the story. When the points that are in my head make it to the page and the points are strong, that is the greatest moment for me.

BYB: You and Bob Lorenz seem to have a pretty good banter on Twitter.  You mentioned you really like Lorenz as a baseball guy.  Why is he one of your favorites?

Ike Dimitriadis: I have always loved Bob Lorenz. There are many TV personalities that cover the Yankees, baseball, and all sports. Bob makes it fun. Besides giving the highlights, he injects his unique style of humor that really makes it great. Many reporters miss that part of the experience, especially when it comes to the kids watching. If you follow him on Twitter, he takes it to another level. Whether it is the back-and-forth with his followers, or zany pictures he posts, he is a great guy to follow. All the while, he is keeping you up to date on all things Yankees.

BYB: You've covered some pretty cool events for us here at Bleeding Yankee Blue.  Which was your favorite and why?

Ike Dimitriadis: Every event I go to for BYB is a cool event, but my favorite would have to be the CC Challenge kickoff. Aside from the obvious thrill of meeting the Sabathias and getting to talk to them, the event itself was a charity event to raise money for inner city youth. We read many stories about how athletes abuse their privilege and live in excess.

Talking to Amber Sabathia about her passion for reaching these youth, and to see both of them giving back with their time and energy to kids who need help, it was a privilege to cover the event.

BYB: You and Erica Morales did the Ice Bucket Challenge this summer and Laura Posada and Amber Sabathia both accepted the challenge.  If it was 2005 and I told you we'd have this type of relationship with the players and baseball wives... would you have believed me?

Ike Dimitriadis: It is hard to believe that we have that level of engagement with people in the spotlight like that. For the record, Jeana Bellezza did it too, and it was a privilege for us to be able to help raise support for those suffering from such a terrible disease. It was personal for me, as we lost my wife's Aunt Gertrude to the disease.

Nevertheless, it goes back to what I mentioned earlier, that these are people who are driven to help others, and I'm thrilled to be part of an organization that supports them and extends the reach of their efforts to our readers.

BYB: You and my friend Frank Gentry started as BYB as recap writers.  After that season ended, you stayed on and began doing features for us. Tell the audience why that was important for you. After all, you had your own blog at the time...

Ike Dimitriadis: I started my own blog, as many people do, just for fun. I was actually surprised when friends suggested I should try out to be a recap writer for BYB. First, I did not think anybody read my stuff. Second, I did not think anyone thought it was good enough to be on the level of BYB. I very much enjoyed doing those recaps, and I enjoyed getting constructive criticism. I found that my writing was getting better as I was doing it. Being here has helped me think about how Yankees news is made, and how fans receive it. I would have been crazy not to stay on.

BYB: You could have written for any blog out there. You're smart, you're a good writer and you have a great knack for baseball history? Why BYB?

Ike Dimitriadis: First, thank you. I have been grateful to be a part of BYB ever since I was invited to join. I get to write about the Yankees for a blog that is top-notch, and for an editor that goes to bat for me every single time out. I get to write about things that are sometimes controversial, and I get the support I need to know that independent thought is encouraged. I know that even when we do not completely agree on everything, that as long as I can make an argument and that it is fair, it will be promoted on the site. For a writer, it does not get much better than that.

BYB: Think back... what was the 1 piece you read on BYB that made you realize, "Hey, I like these guys"

Ike Dimitriadis: You have got to be kidding! Just one?!? I found out about BYB through Jeana Bellezza, and I found her pieces very insightful. I think it was right after Mariano Rivera's injury in 2012 that she did a piece on what his injury meant to the team and all the impact on the Yankees roster, I thought it was really good. It didn't just cover the events, it covered them with the added dimension of the fans' perspective. That property seemed to permeate all the pieces I read on BYB. I quickly became a fan.

BYB: Be honest... (not that honest) How am I doing as the Chief of BYB... or as Mike O'Hara calls me, "Skip"

Ike Dimitriadis: O'Hara calls you Skip? Why am I only finding out about this now??? Seriously, though, I can be honest. Leaders are not measured by their individual accomplishments. They are measured by the collective accomplishments of those they lead. The fact that you encourage people to be creative, explore stories and angles that may not be popular or even mainstream, allows us to be the best writers we can. I especially appreciate your defense when we get unfair criticism. Many people may not realize that we do this as volunteers, for the love of the game and the love of writing. Everybody has an opinion, and many disagree with our viewpoint, but some take it too far and make it personal. It is good to know that you have our back. It's great working for you, Skip!

Well that gave me chills.  Thanks Ike!

Who's next? We'll see soon enough!
