LIKE "A PUNCH IN THE FACE"

Harrison Bader is a Yankee.  This guy exploded on the scene late last season, and he won over the Bronx! His energy and game play is Yankee made, no doubt about it. But the issue with Bader has always been injury. Why? Because the dude does everything hard!

Listen, I won't get on a guy who plays the game hard, but I do worry about Bader long term. That being said, I am thrilled he's in New York and looking forward to him playing with the Yankees this season. But for now, It's "a punch in the face." Bader's words, not mine, but I totally get it. A punch in the face for him, for us fans. We want this guy ready to go, but we have to wait.

Clutch Points writes:

"Harrison Bader is also out for the foreseeable future with an oblique injury, as Aaron Boone announced Friday. On Saturday at Spring Training, Bader spoke out on this latest health setback.

Via Bryan Hoch:

“Harrison Bader said his oblique injury is “a punch in the face.” No official timetable yet for his return, but he said he’ll come back as fast as he can. Oblique injuries generally take at least four weeks.”

"...the recommendation (and he's taking it) is to rest it and be 100% healthy soon."

I said it once and I'll say it again.  You want guys like Bader hurt now than when the season is in full effect. Bader is a game changer, energy maker, f'ing gamer!

Get well soon H.B. Let's GO!

RODON EXPLAINS HIS INJURY & RECOVERY SO IT MAKES SENSE!

This is just a quick note for all ya'll out there that think that a little strain or a tweak shouldn't sideline a player for a long amount of time. We have to remember that while these athletes are tough, injury does come with the territory and while we want these guys to just bounce back and play, it does take time.

In the case of Carlos Rodon, he's hurt, along with a bunch of other players including Harrison Bader.  Our friends at Empire Sports Media wrote this on March 10th:

"The New York Yankees learned of some unsettling news on Thursday, as star pitching acquisition, Carlos Rodon, suffered a left forearm strain that will knock him out beyond the start of the regular season. Rodon signed a six-year, $162 million deal with the Bombers this off-season, hoping to pair with Gerrit Cole as the team’s top lefty pitcher."

But there is definitely more to it, and it how he explains it that fans need to pay attention to it. This comes from Bryan Hoch:
The porn stashe is on point by the way.

But did you hear that? I mean sure, he'd love to be out there, and he could very well be fine. But he's talking about Game play.  He can play through it but how long will he last? And so, the recommendation (and he's taking it) is to rest it and be 100% healthy soon.

Yes, it sucks for us, but that's the way it is. And trust me, I am sure Harrison Bader is in the same boat.  I get it.

DON'T BE MAD AT ONLY FRANKIE MONTAS, FOLKS!

This is the Carl Pavano 2.0 trade. Is it too soon to call this trade a disaster? Because right now it feels like it. It's also hard NOT to be agitated at several parties.

I agree with Casey's post: DON'T TRY AND BE A HERO, FRANKIE MONTAS because his confession doesn't spare him from scrutiny, in my opinion. Sure, no one can blame him from wanting to get out of Oakland, but why not just keep your damn mouth shut, Frankie? My mom taught me I don't always need to SAY what I am thinking in my head. That couldn't be truer here.

When players are traded, they have physicals. So standard protocol here, Yankees trade for Frankie Montas and he gets a clean bill of health from Yankee doctors. In exchange for Montas we send Cooper Bowman, Luis Medina, JP Sears (above) and Ken Waldichuk to Oakland. We were supposed to get one full year before Montas hit free agency but, now that will be a few months if we are lucky. We got hosed ladies and gentlemen.

Literally. We gave up some good pieces for a guy that made eight starts and pitched to a 6.35 ERA. Even Brian Cashman knows how bad this is and said, "obviously he wasn’t healthy, so the trade goes into a bad category," Cashman said. "We gave up assets and we didn’t get anything for it," read more HERE. So, thank you Cashman for admitting the A's are laughing at us because we dropped the ball, and they still have a good return. It's time to stop shopping in Oakland, Cashman. It's not working out well for us.

As mad as I am that Frankie opened his big mouth and Cashman admitted what we are all thinking what about the accountability Yankee doctors should have for this? It's their job to perform these standard physicals and find any concerns. So the Giants and Mets could do it with loser Carlos Correa but our doctors can't? Maybe we should be shopping for new "medical experts" because we could've caught that. Even Frankie knew he didn't have the "clean bill of health" Cashman said our doctors gave him. We look stupid.

At he end of the day, we gave away four guys with upside for a short-term rental. You can't make up this kind of insanity and at the end of the day no one is held accountable for it. The medical staff and Cashman all walk away with money in their pockets....and I hate it.

DON'T TRY AND BE A HERO, FRANKIE MONTAS

Sometimes it's better to just keep your mouth shut.

Frankie Montas is pretty much to most hated Yankee ever. It was Carl Pavano for a while. Many couldn't stand Sonny Gray. But now it's Frankie Montas. Why? Because he wasn't truthful with his injury. He was just trying to be a hero. And when you do that in Yankeeland and you're wrong, you're toast. Why? Because the fan base will crucify you.

ESPN writes:

"Frankie Montas said he was not "100 percent" healthy last year when he was traded to the New York Yankees and emphasized that he expects to pitch this season...

"I was trying to push through," Montas told reporters, according to MLB.com. "I got traded to a new team and wanted to show what I could do. Things didn't go the way I was expecting."

This is the world we live in folks. A world of heroes and a bunch of new generation people that think that fake news and deception is the new way of life. What ever happened to honesty? What ever happened to being truthful?

And more to that. Didn't the Yankees give this guy a physical? This injury couldn't be picked up in that? I find the whole thing a big annoying.

For me... I move on, but not without taking a shot at this guy.  Don't try and be a hero when you come to New York, Frankie. Just don't. I would be a lot better with this if he literally came to us and the Yankees announced there was tenderness or a strain or something. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd still be pissed, but I would know there was some honesty going into the rest of the season. Instead, we got a guy that was broken before he even got to the Bronx.

What a bunch of shit.

Go away Frankie Montas... go away.

SHORTSTOP FOR THE YANKEES IS NOT A SURE THING

Source: Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post

The 2023 Yankees have a lot of depth at the middle infielder position. And guess what, it is a good problem to have. I have my own insights and evidence about what the Yankees should do at shortstop. Some of this I shared with The Bleed Blue Dugout- 2023 Spring Training Podcast on Monday night among other considerations. Nothing in baseball is a sure thing and this season, shortstop certainly isn't.

It is worth saying that the last time the Yankees went with a rookie as the regular at short, it was Derek Jeter. He had a lackluster spring training, but he emerged as the best potential for the Yankees. And the brass was right, clearly. Now there are three guys vying for the position—one is a veteran, one is a semi-rookie and one is a straight up rookie. And just because we had a guy at that position last year and that same guy is on the team, it is not a sure thing that he will be the starting shortstop on March 30th, the season opener.

"If Kiner-Falefa emerges from this camp as the starter, it will be the first loss for the 2023 Yankees," reported The New York Post on Tuesday. I can't say I disagree. The Yankees have two great young shortstops in Oswald Peraza and Anthony Volpe in their arsenal and each of them are equally capable in fulfilling additional roles at third or even second base. So why would they go with a veteran when they clearly saw he was unable to fulfill his role when things really counted down the stretch?

"Plus, the Yankees should have learned a Gary Sanchez lesson. They determined he was not mentally/physically up to holding the starting catching job in the 2020 playoffs, yet detrimentally brought him back the next year. The Yanks are trying to win a championship and if they lose faith a player can handle that time of year, then that player has to go. Last year, this happened with Kiner-Falefa," reported to The New York Post

This has become the Yankees MO. They think the player will somehow come out of this trace or will drop the habits that have been their undoing. Yet, they don't. Sure we can point to Sanchez as exhibit A but you also have to add Aaron Hicks and Josh Donaldson to exhibits B and C respectively. One of those has to get DFA'd before the All Star Break. Or I owe my son a top shelf lunch.

If the Yankees start IKF, I believe it is just to make a statement—that he is tradable and can be valuable to another team who does not have the infield depth the Yankees have. And the Yankees have also said that just because you start a position, does not mean you won the position. It is a long season. And nothing is a sure thing.

“We’re early,” manager Aaron Boone said Monday, ahead of Tuesday’s off day. “I’ve seen a lot of things that I like, but I also want it to just play out. Right now looking at it as, I gotta get these guys ready for their season in the best possible way. Then as we get closer and closer and we start having those debates or conversations in more earnest, we’ll do that. But right now, I try to treat it as making sure these guys are getting the right number of looks, at-bats, built up properly, in a position to physically be in a good spot as we continue to move forward,” reported The New York Post

The Yankees will give all three guys a shot in the next stretch of games. And the decisions of who emerges as the starting shortstop on day one will just have to wait. Volpe may just need a little more game time in Triple A, Peraza will likely make the team as his defense is far superior than IKF and IKF could just be a placeholder until Volpe is ready. It is an interesting circle of possibilities with no guarantees.

YANKEES GRAB YET ANOTHER CATCHER

As if we didn't have enough good catchers on our team already with dudes like Jose Trevino and Kyle Higashioka, the Yankees went after another one. This one however is for a minor league deal.  Who cares. When it comes to stockpiling arms and backstops, I am always fine with it. When it comes to this Yankee team, many of our backup and minor league catchers are all hurt right now. Austin Wells, Ben Rortvedt and Josh Breaux. So this just makes sense.

MLB Trade Rumors writes:

"The Yankees have signed catcher Nick Ciuffo to a minor league deal, according to his transactions tracker ...

Since the start of 2018, he’s appeared in 167 minor league games with a batting line of .247/.299/.381, walking in just 6.8% of his plate appearances while striking out at a 28.8% rate. He’s also appeared in 21 major league games over that time, hitting .188/.259/.292 for the Rays and Orioles. Ciuffo spent last year in Triple-A with the White Sox but was punched out in 31.1% of his trips to the plate."

Bring it Nick! Bring it.

35% off everything right now!

YANKEES SHUT DOWN BIG TOMMY KAHNLE

According to Bryan Hoch, Tommy Kahnle is on the mend. All because he has biceps tendonitis. Well, that sucks.  The reports are he could be dealing with that for about a month. I guess better now than later, right?

Clutchpoints writes:

"If Kahnle is not ready for Opening Day, it is possible that both Domingo German and Clarke Schmidt make the roster for the start of the season, according to Hoch. Domingo German and Clarke Schmidt are in a competition for the fifth spot in the starting rotation due to the injury to Frankie Montas.

With Kahnle’s status in question, the loser of that competition would go to the bullpen."

It's also worth mentioning that Kahnle has dealt with this injury before. It was in 2018. Then of course you have to remember he had Tommy John.

Let's just hope he makes a full recovery.

HOLY COW! JASSON DOMINGUEZ IS ON FIRE!

For some reason I hear Phil Rizzuto in my head right now, not Michael Kay. At any rate, HOLY COW Jasson Dominguez aka "The Martian" is having one hell of a spring and I am ready to see more.

I think we all are. I sill have to remind myself that he just turned 20 years old! He's the youngest player at camp and if he keeps playing the way he is and moving quickly through the minor league ranks it won't be too long until he's a big leaguer. Sunday, he got one small step closer, but man was it fun to watch.

Dominguez made the ninth inning exciting yesterday by smashing a go-ahead three-run homer as part of an eight-run inning that helped the Yankees come from behind in their 10-6 win over the Braves. That was his second home run this spring and he continues to mash with a .471 BA, 4 RBI's, two walks and a stolen base. He's heating up at the right time.

Dominguez should start the season out at Double-A, he played in five games their after promoting at the end of the 2022 season but there is already a lot of buzz about his progress. Even Aaron Boone had a lot to say about him, you can read more HERE but Boone likes what he sees and Dominguez just likes the opportunity.

The more I follow this kid, the more excited about him I get. He said he came to camp to learn from everyone and he seems to be figuring out what works for him pretty quickly for a 20 year old kid. He has good control and reads pitches well and doesn't over-think anything, he even said "the game speeds up, you have to do the opposite. If you allow the game to speed you up, then you get out of your rhythm."

He sounds like a big leaguer already. I have been on Anthony Volpe and Oswaldo Cabrera watch all spring, but he's quickly reminding us all that's he's coming and faster than we probably think. He won't be in the Bronx come April, but he's not too far behind.

WEEK 1: YANKEE SPRING TRAINING NOTES

Well, it is not new news that the Yankees are shopping internally for their starting left fielder. Besides the open outfield position, there's the starting rotation and middle infield positions potentially up for grabs. As the Yankees finish up their first official week of spring training games, how are they fairing? Let's read through BYB's week 1 spring training notes.

Aaron Hicks has a solo shot here, a hit here, but honestly I don't see much more from the incumbent left fielder. Basically, he is the same old, same old Hicks. He hits sporadically, his fielding is average and he offers no visible leadership from the bench.

Source: Associated Press

"After going 0-for-3 against the Pirates, Hicks is 2-for-8 this spring with two singles that would have been outs in past years (due to the shift). He’s not thrilled that those are his only two hits, but he says he’s never been much of a Grapefruit League hitter," reported NJ.com. In Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Aaron Hicks went 1-for-2 with a solo home run. As I said same old, same old. Hicks blames a lot of his hitting woes to the shift, which has essentially be lifted in 2023. As NJ.com reports. "The switch-hitter lost dozens of hits to it over the years while batted left-handed. Finding a hole wasn’t easy batting with three and sometimes four infielders on the right side, especially with one of them always out in short right field turning liners to the outfield grass into easy outs." The shift demise is giving Hicks extra optimism. I say, that's an excuse.

Other left fielders who have an opportunity to make the main roster include Oswaldo Cabrera who has been lighting it up this spring. In fact, Yankees skipper Aaron Boone said he'd like to get Cabrera some reps in center field as well. Willie Calhoun, who was signed by the Yankees to a minor league contract this winter, has been lighting it up this spring. Calhoun is 6-for-11 with a home run and OBP of .615 and an OPS of 1.524. Calhoun is a career outfielder but started as the team's DH this week. He will likely get some reps in left as well. Then there is Rafael Ortega, who also was signed to a minor league contract. On Saturday against the Rays, he started in left and banged a two-run homer in the fourth inning to give the Yankees the lead. Ortega has hit consistently this spring going 3-for-8 with two home runs, 5 RBI with an insane 1.875 OPS.

Source: Associated Press

However, I would like to zero in on Yankees number 2 prospect Jasson Dominguez. The 20-year-old has caught the eye of Yankee great and spring training guest instructor Bernie Williams, who has been impressed with what he's seen so far from Dominguez.

"He’s built like a tank. I remember when I was 20 years old, I was a rail,” Williams said. “He’s got a good attitude, and from everything I’ve heard so far, he is very coachable. He wants to learn. He’s just happy to be here, and he’s not really taking it for granted. I think he’s on a great path right now," reported MLB.com. Nicknamed "The Martian" Dominguez has some more minor league time in his future, but certainly excited to see how and when he will be called up to the Bronx.

Moving onto to shortstop, the front runner for the middle infielder position has been Oswald Peraza. He has not been playing at the caliber the Yankees expect him to be. Perreza is hitting .222 (2-for-9) with a stolen base on the spring. The Yankees will need more production from him if he is to be the opening day shortstop. The guy that has caught everyone's eye is Anthony Volpe. Volpe is 5-for-15 with a home run and two doubles. He is making a good case to make the team this spring, but many suggest he needs more reps in Triple A. I don't think the Yankees will waste too much time with Isiah Kiner-Falefa or Peraza if Volpe shows signs of growth by the All Star Break or even sooner.

Finally, there's pitching. Luis Severino just does not seem to be the sharper, younger version of himself. Boone and his coaching staff liked what they have seen in the Yankee starter, but I still think there's work to be done, both physically and mentally. The winds were not on the Yankees' side in Saturday's game (he gave up two dingers) but still Severino has given up seven earned runs, three home runs and seven strikeouts in two starts, including Saturday. They will need more from him this season as the Yankees are already down a starter in Frankie Montas. They need more innings from Sevy.

I would like to give a shout out to Yankee pitcher Jhony Brito, who has pitched well and is getting extra looks by Boone and the pitching staff this spring. "Brito opened eyes last season going 11-4 with a 2.96 ERA working 112 2/3 innings in 26 outings at two levels. The 6-foot-2, 160 pounder began the season going 5-2 with a 2.36 ERA in eight Double-A starts, then was bumped up to Triple-A on June 1 and had more success there going 6-2 with a 3.31," reported NJ.com. He pitched 2 and 2/3 innings on Saturday and despite giving up some late hits, he pitched well and with a lot of control. He could be an innings eater, and provide the bull pen more depth this season.

Week 1 is in the books for the Yankees this spring. I am excited to see more of the Yankees and how they gel this spring. I caution the Yankees with assuming who will be where and when this season. It needs to be an open canvas with the best team on the field everyday. Boone is known for his assumptions based on data. I need him to open his eyes and watch the game, watch his players closely and make decisions on performance not on what stat or algorithm spits out the ideal lineup. And don't wait too long to play your youth, otherwise they could be gone before they get the opportunity to contribute.

VOLPE MANIA!

Anthony Volpe is clearly almost ready for primetime. Now I don't want to get too ahead of myself, but many fans are already. Many want to see Volpe man shortstop by opening day.  Here's the thing; Spring training is the gauge to see what each team has and what teams need to improve on, keep an eye on or just dump. Some will make it, some will not.

But right now, with news of IKF potentially on his way out in some sort of trade form, and Oswald Peraza getting hit by a pitch on the wrist today, Volpe could be the guy standing at shortstop by the end of the spring. (Peraza is fine, but it was a scare.)

Today, Volpe was electric only because of his leadoff home run. The New York Post writes:

"Anthony Volpe started his latest audition to make the Yankees’ roster with a bang...

Volpe worked a 2-2 count before Keller threw him a slider on the outside edge that he didn’t miss, crushing it 394 feet to left field.

It was Volpe’s first home run of the spring as he improved to batting 3-for-9 in four games."
It's exciting. Volpe proving where he belongs. Here he is talking about his performance.
Now I know it's early, but damn it's fun to watch.

More of this please. Young, energetic and producing. It's what we need on this New York Yankee team.  Not stale bats like Aaron Hicks.

Bravo Anthony. Keep going!

AARON JUDGE'S NEW ROLE COULD BE THE END FOR AARON HICKS

Look up the definition for the word 'obsolete' and you will find that it means "no longer in use" but I think it needs a visual reference also. Seriously, put a picture of Aaron Hicks in there and you get a great visual and every Yankee fan will understand and agree. It's the perfect definition.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Yankees are finally acknowledging what fans already know. Hicks is useless and no longer needed. His Yankee career .233 BA and outfield "contributions" can and will be replaced. The Yankees are going to put more useful bodies on the field and in the batters box...so we hope. You can read more HERE, and even though this is still only Spring Training I will call it good news. Hopefully it holds true for the regular season also.

Our new Yankee captain Aaron Judge is acting like the leader we expect from a captain. He had previous conversations and told Aaron Boone he would change positions. We saw him work out at first base already, and now he is willing to play left field instead of right field. That's the leader we need. Even if the Yankees didn't want to consider the move, Judge made the suggestion. That's all about putting the team first.

I like the suggestion. If we have a healthy Giancarlo Stanton, and can use him in right field more often and allow us to use Harrison Bader in center and give Judge the more expansive left field that gives the Yankees a much stronger outfield. At this point, any lineup without Hicks is an upgrade. Not to mention that I also want to see more of Bader because he earned the opportunity.

Now we wait and see when Boone makes the change, but he said was coming, "Yeah, he's gonna," Boone said. "Soon. One more in right, then I'll probably have (Judge) work a few days out there (in left)." It's the first Boone move of the season that makes a ton of sense. Hopefully this move is effective, because this could be a game changer for the Yankees.

I can only hope that this works and that means we can phase Hicks out somehow. Crazy contract or not, it's not serving the Yankees well and we need to make a change. Only one Aaron benefits this lineup and should remain in it.

THE TRADE PARTNER FOR ISIAH KINER-FALEFA HAS BEEN FOUND!

A ton of Yankee fans don't like IKF. I am not one of them.

But with nearly the entire fan base hoping he gets traded, I think the Yankees are in a situation where maybe it would be better to get him out of the Bronx.  Sadly, that's not his fault.  We have guys like Oswald Peraza and Anthony Volpe coming up behind him, and for the most part, he really isn't what Brian Cashman said he was.  He is not a top shortstop and his defense isn't exactly amazing. He is a hitter, not a homer run hitter, but singles, doubles, he puts the bat on the ball, more than alot of guys. But that's not enough for Yankee fans who want perfect players.

There's more to it though. It almost feels uncomfortable now and IKF and his family doesn't deserve that. Remember, this all started coming to a head around mid-season last year when his father received the most offensive thing you could ever send to a parent. NJ.com's Brendan Kuty reported this last year:

"...a fan sent a direct message to his father on Twitter — a photo of the shortstop with haunting words under it: “IKF SHOT DEAD IN THE BRONX.”

The Twitter image was deleted, the account was suspended, but that's when it got dangerous. I mean, we're talking about baseball here. It's outrageous that anyone would do such a thing.

Since then it hasn't been a pleasant experience for this guy. Here's the thing, IKF has a dream come true. He's a Yankee. Has he has said “This is my dream team. This is everything I’ve ever wanted in my life."

And so now, even in the off season, the Yankees are not only thinking about upgrading their infield's defense, but looking for a possible home for this guy who deserves none of this disrespect.

Empire Sports Media has a terrific story about a place that could be a landing spot for IKF if the Yankees and Dodgers are willing to do business.

"During a spring training game Monday, Dodgers shortstop Gavin Lux went down clutching his knee as he was running to third base. He had to be carted off the field and industry sources have reported that the injury to Lux is severe and will keep him out of action for a long time.

Now the Dodgers have an opening at shortstop that they weren’t expecting to have. The Yankees wouldn’t ask for much in return for IKF as it would more be a salary dump for the Yanks who could save $6 million by trading him away."

Now look, the Yankees and the Dodgers have not talked to anyone's knowledge, but hopefully they're reading the rags today and this sparked an idea because it's brilliant.

Happy Wednesday.
