THAT TIME RONALD TORREYES WAS ELI WHITESIDE

It's a silly story, but this is baseball and sometimes players get picked up to be let go or claimed off waivers and then signed again then to be released.  In this case, it was Ronald Torreyes, pictured above.  But I remember when it happened with the Yankees and catcher Eli Whiteside.  Excuse me while I look through my BYB archive for a classic:

This is JOKE OF THE DAY... from January 2013.  The story was about catcher Eli Whiteside:

"It appears Eli Whiteside was outrighted to AAA by the Texas Rangers... Eli has been all over the place, from the Giants, to the Yankees to the Blue Jays to the Rangers and now outrighted to AAA, read MLB Trade Rumors tracker HERE."

(In Photo: Ronald Torreyes)
Now comes our friend Ronald Torreyes.  According to MLB.com, "An offseason roller coaster continued on Monday for Ronald Torreyes, as the Yankees claimed the infielder off waivers from the Angels. To make room on the 40-man roster, outfielder Lane Adams was designated for assignment.

It was less than three weeks ago, on Jan. 15, that the Yankees claimed Adams off waivers from the Royals and designated Torreyes for assignment. The Angels claimed him on Jan. 25, but they designated him two days later.

(In Photo: Tyler Olson)
Torreyes began the offseason with the Dodgers, who designated him on Jan. 7, then traded him to the Yankees five days later -- with left-hander Tyler Olson -- for infielder Rob Segedin."

And you know, it's just the game and the way teams get structured as they get closer to Spring Training.  Whatever the case, Torreyes is back with the Yankees... for now.

Oh yeah, and just a recap on what Eli Whiteside's been up to... Whiteside saw the Big show in 8 games with the Chicago Cubs in 2014. He was not on the pro level in 2015. And you know what? A solid minor league guy is fine too.

I don't know, I just found it interesting and when I saw Torreyes was back with the Yanks, it reminded me of the time Whiteside bounced all over the place.

Where else can you get a silly story from my ridiculous memory bank about a catcher named Eli Whiteside.  Right here... on BYB.

Nighty Night.

THE YANKS JUST PLUCKED ANOTHER PITCHER OFF WAIVERS

The Yankees have claimed Sam Demel off waivers from the Houston Astros. Read about it HERE.  When they claimed Demel, they had to give someone up... so what did they do? They released Dan Otero, the same Dan Otero they claimed off waivers from the San Francisco Giants yesterday (read HERE)... I'm not kidding.

According to MLB.com, Demel "owns a 4-4 record with two saves and a 4.95 ERA (63 2/3 innings, 35 earned runs) in 72 Major League relief appearances with the D-backs from 2010-12."

(In Photo: Eli Whiteside)
I can only wonder what happens next... maybe tomorrow the Yankees will claim Eli Whiteside off waivers and release Sam Demel.

That's about right... I kid... I kid.

RUSS CANZLER IS A COOL GUY

Russ Canzler will be my new Eli Whiteside.  He'll be someone I check in with throughout their 2013 season because they were a Yankee for 5 minutes. That's how I roll.  I didn't know much about Canzler until he came aboard and ... I still don't, but that being said, you have to give Canzler credit for being a good sport about being on several teams this offseason due to being DFA'ed and then being signed.  He wound up on the Baltimore Orioles.  We wrote about the ordeal in GUESS WHERE RUSS CANZLER JUST LANDED? for guidance on that.

MLB.com's Jordan Bastian interviewed Canzler about it all and he said this of the situation: "It's been fun...I was thinking about buying all the hats of the teams I've been on this winter."

Bastian (full piece HERE) also has the full story about Canzler's short lived time as a Yankee writing:

"After signing free-agent pitcher Brett Myers, though, Cleveland once again tried to pass Canzler through waivers. This time around, the 26-year-old first baseman was claimed by the Yankees. New York had a need for a right-handed hitter, and Canzler seemed to be the type of player who might get a real shot at filling that role.

Playing in the Yankees' system seemed like a match made in baseball heaven, too. Canzler could train in Tampa near relatives and, if he did not make the Opening Day roster, he might've suited up for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Canzler's just moved into a house roughly a half hour from that Minor League stadium.

"We were all set," Canzler said. "We thought it worked out."

The Yanks then entered talks with Hafner about bringing the DH to the Bronx -- an idea that had Canzler excited. Last September, Hafner and Canzler were a few lockers apart, and the veteran did his part to make the first baseman feel at ease in the Majors.

"He was really nice to me, really nice to the younger guys," Canzler said. "He was kind of that calm presence that made us all feel comfortable and helped us enjoy our time."

When the Yankees signed Hafner, though, Canzler had a sudden realization.

"It hit me," he said. "I was like, 'Oh, wait. Uh oh. Wait a minute. We're at 40 on the roster again.'"

I really like this cat, I'm sorry it didn't work out for him in New York, but we'll run into him in Baltimore.

Just thought I'd share.

GUESS WHERE RUSS CANZLER JUST LANDED?

Russ Canzler has been claimed off waivers 4 times this winter.   The only other person that was claimed off waivers close to that was Eli Whiteside and it happened 3 times for him, read HERE.  Now you may ask "Well, who cares about Eli Whiteside?" I don't, just trying to make a comparison, plus, I just like writing Eli Whiteside.  The only thing better would be if his nickname was "Whitey" Whiteside.

Anyway... I'm off track and I apologize.  Russ Canzler, who was just Designated for Assignment last week by the New York Yankees has just been signed by the Baltimore Orioles, read HERE.  The Orioles designated Luis Martinez for assignment.  If the Yankees were smart, they would sign Luis Martinez, just so I can write a new "Guess where Luis Martinez just landed" piece.  Better yet... Maybe they can put Steve Pearce on waivers...

OK... I'm officially delirious...

JOKE OF THE DAY...

And I don't mean Eli, I mean the way he's been handled throughout this entire winter.  It appears Eli Whiteside was outrighted to AAA by the Texas Rangers. You can read about it HERE.

Eli has been all over the place, from the Giants, to the Yankees to the Blue Jays to the Rangers and now outrighted to AAA, read MLB Trade Rumors tracker HERE.

You gotta feel bad for Eli Whiteside.  Some of you don't even know who the guy is, what his stats are and what his thoughts are in all of this... you just know Eli and how he'll always be connected to such uncertainty and craziness. What a shame.  I hope one day he plays in the pros consistantly.  No player needs this crap.

ICHIRO, RAMIRO PENA, BOBBY WILSON & A CHRISTMAS SURPRISE

A few nuggets we wanted you to know about.

Ichiro Suzuki: Ichiro and the Yankees are almost finished with a deal that would bring him to the Yankees for 2 years.  Read Mark Feinsand HERE. The range is between $12 and $13 million according to him. Good. For the record, I knew the Yanks would do that. I don't think the Yankees care Ichiro is 39 years old.  He's still one of the most athletic players in the game, he still gets on base and if he has 3000 hits as a Yankee, that helps everyone. Stay tuned on this signing... it should be official soon.

Ramiro Pena: MLB.com (HERE) says Pena signed a 1 year, major league contract with the Atlanta Braves.  Good for Pena. Pena would never have been a superstar in New York. He'll get more playing time in Atlanta maybe, who knows.  Pena did a lot for the Yankees and was always available when they needed him. He was up and down in AAA and filled in everywhere.  He's a team player and I wish him well.

Bobby Wilson: Catcher Bobby Wilson signed a minor league deal with the Yankees according to Buster Olney HERE.  OK, throwing another catcher into the competition will prove good for everyone who wants the starting job.  The only other catcher I'd like to see is Eli Whiteside. I'm kidding.

Melanie Iglesias: Finally, you know we love Kate Upton here, but it's the holiday season and we found this "flip book" of Melanie Iglesias. It works for me... Enjoy this, I did.

If there is any other Yankee news, or, Melanie Iglesias news, we'll bring it to you.

THE YANKS AIN'T GETTING NOTHING FOR CHRISTMAS

Shhh.  Don't tell anyone... The Yankees have a secret gift coming, right?  I mean, there are moves happening all around us. The Red Sox have already snatched up Jonny Gomes and Mike Napoli, HERE. There were conflicting reports about whether or not the Detroit Tigers offered a 2 year offer to Scott Hairston, the same Scott Hairston the Yankees were claiming to be in the mix for, read HERE.

Joakim Soria seems to have sealed his 2 year deal, with a 3rd year option with the Texas Rangers...read HERE.  Even Eli Whiteside was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays, read HERE. Good, now someone else can write about Eli Whiteside. I had my fill HERE.

There has to be some type of surprise gift that the Yankees are about to get.. I know it. Right Santa Claus? Come On!  Brian Cashman can't actually seem this quiet and sluggish unless he's got something up his sleeve.  I mean, let's face it, even Santa's confused... Cashman's list is in pencil with plenty of cross outs and eraser smudges. Time seems to be running out just because it looks like after Day 1 of the Winter Meetings in Nashville, moves are happening quickly and teams are engaged..except for the Yankees. Instead, Cashman is trying to figure out if he can sign an infielder with next to no money, a few tokens from Chuck E. Cheese and some Box Tops.

The Yankees are really sticking to that Luxury Tax stuff huh?  It's killing me. I'm a child of the Steinbrenner Era, I like movement...yet... Nothing.

The Yankees needs seem complicated, but they aren't. I mean, from the outside looking in, there are easy fixes under that small budget we have been allotted. First off, there hasn't been a single word from the Yanks on Raul Ibanez and Ichiro Suzuki lately. Why? You want to lock up right field and get a DH at a cheap price? You can do it for about $7 million between the 2 of them. How about a steady infielder or bench player...part-time 3rd baseman? Jeff Keppinger is available, all the Yankees need to do is call. Eric Chavez is playing in 2013, that's been established. I'm not sure why next year would be any different than this year with Chavez... he's 34...sign him.

Now look, the catching situation is no easy task, but the reality is, we have Francisco Cervelli and Austin Romine but Lord knows Brian Cashman wants to upgrade the backstop. And yes, right field is definitely a concern for him, I get feel it. I know he wants a right fielder with power, not Ichiro, because if he truly wanted Ichiro, he would have signed him already. So what will happen? Watch... Ichiro will slip from our grasp and Cashman will be behind the 8 ball again. Let's hope that's not the case. I like Ichiro in pinstripes.

Look, I am praying for a gift this December. Something the Yankees can be proud of, but based on the way things are going, I need to tell you, it don't look good...
And it's a damn shame too because we've been good all year, haven't we?

GIVE AUSTIN ROMINE A SHOT! WHY NOT?

Never in a million years did I expect the Pittsburgh Pirates to outbid the New York Yankees to sign Russell Martin…..never... ever. Reality has set in. This is the first example of how the Yankees will work within their $189 million threshold. Another thing that comes to mind is the fact that if the Yankees really wanted him back…. they would have matched the Pirate’s offer, but they didn’t so now it’s time to do more than just react. It’s time to think about the next starting catcher, and it might be Austin Romine’s time to shine.
Before I make my case, I know what a lot of you are thinking….”Are you CRAZY?! “ I realize that Austin Romine is unproven and only played in 17 games for Scranton Wilkes-Barre last year. I admit, this idea sounds absolutely crazy! As crazy as it is, times are changing. What was once the normal protocol for the Yankees is changing. In the past we have just gone out and looked at the free agent market and just outbid everyone. Easy, right? Not anymore. OK, so surely we can just look at a trade right? Anything is possible, we talked about it in WANNA REPLACE RUSSELL MARTIN? TRADE FOR CARLOS SANTANA. We like that idea, and Cashman has said that he has checked in with other teams... read that HERE, but honestly…. he doesn’t sound too optimistic about it. I don’t buy into everything that Cashman says, I know he is the master of strategy but I am not as quick to dismiss his statements this time. Think about it, can we really expect a team to trade a starting catcher? It isn’t likely, and even if it was it will cost us some of our top prospects. I know anything is possible, but this idea isn't far fetched.

I know Romine isn’t the only option; we also have Chris Stewart and Eli Whiteside.  We can’t forget about Francisco Cervelli, who may have an opportunity to be a starter also, we talked about it in our piece ALL EYES ON CERVELLI AS RUSSELL MARTIN BOLTS NEW YORK. All of these guys can contribute to the team, but they may not be the best option for a starting role. I would still keep them in a backup role.

So I go back to my original idea…maybe it is time to take a risk and put Romine behind the plate. Is it an ideal scenario? No. However, the Yankees do project him to be a starting catcher, and in the end after the
Jesus Montero trade he is still here. The Yankees do believe in his abilities. Defensively, he has the skills behind the plate, and the Yankees have faith in him. He doesn’t have the big potent bat we have been spoiled with in years past, but maybe that is a good thing. Just because he doesn’t hit as many home runs doesn’t mean he can’t put the ball in play. If he can be consistent and help drive in runs then anything he does with a bat is a good bonus. Maybe Romine could be the great defensive catcher we have been waiting for. All of these things could happen, if he can stay healthy. I know his health is a big question mark, but if not now….when?

The Yankees have committed to keeping Romine. They are testing him, and my gut tells me that sending him to the Arizona Fall League this year was more than just to give him some work because he missed the 2012 season. Maybe it was a test before Spring Training. Going forward, the Yankees are going to need to give the kids a shot, especially with the new payroll challenges they face. Not only is Romine cheap….but it is time for him to prove himself. We won’t know if he can or can't do the job if he isn’t given the opportunity, and I want to see that happen. I think he is up for the challenge.

ALL EYES ON CERVELLI AS RUSSELL MARTIN BOLTS NEW YORK

Yesterday at the airport, I was thinking about Russell Martin... no...not in that way bro... in the "Free Agent way." I was thinking about him not coming back to New York. To be honest, I never expected the Pittsburgh Pirates to be the team that would beat out the Yanks when it came to something like this, but they did and congrats to them. They're getting a great defensive catcher.  But as I sat there thinking, that question about Martin popped in my head, What happens if he leaves?  It's was a question that George King III of the New York Post first "kind of" posed in his piece on November 28th HERE... writing "...the Yankees don’t have a catcher on the roster or in the system capable of being a No. 1 catcher."  That simple sentence stood out to me, because, King's right...he's always right.

the Yankees don’t have a catcher on the roster or in the system capable of being a No. 1 catcher

Read more: Pirates, Rangers in hot pursuit of Yankees' Martin http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/yankeesblog/pirates_rangers_in_hot_pursuit_of_DIYxAC5an9skQnJPIi3E3I#ixzz2DfpN5Mr0

Russell Martin is now gone, leaving to play for the Pirates for 2 years and $17 million, read HERE. Is it a big deal? Well, in the sense that we have no top catcher on the Yankees right now, it is a big deal, but now we need to see who the men are and who the mice are.  Don't know what I mean? Enter Francisco Cervelli ladies and gentlemen.
Right now the top catcher in the Yankees system is Francisco Cervelli and Austin Romine. Logically, you have to daydream at this moment and wonder what Yankeeland would have felt like if Jesus Montero was still in our farm system, or better yet, backing up Martin all season.  If that was the case, there would be no panic in Yankeeland right now. We would logically pass the torch to Montero and hope he would shine.  But those days are over and we are left with Cervelli and Romine. Not exactly a bad problem, just an interesting one.

Both guys are good, but not great.  Plus, don't forget, the Yanks signed Eli Whiteside only to designate him for assignment (read HERE) when the Andy Pettitte signing became official. What we got ain't much, but it's something.

But back to my man vs. mouse analysis.  This is the time when we see what Francisco Cervelli sees... he sees an opportunity, a huge opportunity. The question is, will he fight for it or let it pass him by.  A better question... Will he get it? The answer... Doubtful. It's nuts to think about this, but I have never felt like Cervelli got a fair shot in New York, ever. I feel like Yankees treat the guy like a black sheep, an embarrassment and whenever he shows up, they push him to the back of the room.  Well, truth be told, only 1 man can push to make this situation work in his favor and that's Francisco Cervelli.
Now, truth be told, Cisco isn't the best and he'll admit that too, but he is the most passionate ballplayer I've seen in a long, long time.  Look, passion doesn't win ballgames if you can't play. But believing in yourself helps you push to be the best and in turn, wins ballgames.  Cervelli does that and now, there's a window and he needs to make presence known.

Don't forget, Cervelli had a terrific Spring Training in 2012 and on the last day, he was told to go to AAA and the Yanks traded for Chris Stewart as their backup to Martin. While Stewart did fine and was better defensively than Cervelli, there is no doubt Cisco got screwed.  It's my opinion that the heart in Cervelli is so big, his energy is so visible that I would have made him the backup. It's logical... He had earned it last spring and should have been there.
Now, as we head into winter, no one in Yankeeland knows what's next.  But if I'm Cervelli, I'm anxious right now because you don't let chances like this go by without a fight...unless you're a mouse.  But let's be honest, the fight will still be hard.  The Yankees have been connected to Mike Napoli for weeks along with other teams.  The Yankees will be heading into the Winter Meetings looking for a number 1 catcher right now...and disregarding Cervelli once again, probably making him feel like a second class citizen and trust me, if it happens again, and I'm Francisco Cervelli... I walk.

Look, the time is now. The Yankees either need to give our youngsters a shot, or they'll upgrade via trade or free agent. But something needs to happen.  Do we need to panic? Not exactly.  Sure, Martin was a great defensive catcher, but like my friend Bob wrote on Twitter last night:

That's it in a nutshell. That, my friends makes perfect sense to me.  Look... people are mad at Russell Martin for walking and they're mad at the Yankees and Brian Cashman for letting him walk.  But mark my words... and write this down;  They let Martin walk for a reason. They have a plan, because Lord know you don't walk into Spring training without a top catcher.  Who will it be? Cervelli? Joe Mauer? Austin Romine? Kelly Shoppach? Who  the hell knows... but Cash knows what he's doing...  I trust him... so let's wait and see.

YANKEES ARE ROLLING; ELI WHITESIDE GETS A DEAL

Thank God Eli Whiteside is signed with the Yankees today. Now we're moving!  It was announced HERE that the Yankees and Eli Whiteside have agreed on a 1 year deal worth $625,000, and $200,000 in the minor leagues. Read about it HERE.

I am not going to sit here and try and fool you... I know nothing about Eli Whiteside other than he's a backup catcher.  I can't tell you that I could actually pick Eli Whiteside out of a lineup if I needed to. I don't think I can.  When the Yankees first claimed Eli Whiteside off waivers from the San Francsico Giants, I was sarcastic with my post titled ELI WHITESIDE IS A YANKEE! WAIT, WHO?,  Why you ask?

(In photo: Jesus Montero)
Well, it was because I couldn't understand why the Yankees could get rid of a young phenom in Jesus Montero, then watch Francisco Cervelli kick ass in spring training last spring only to send him to the minors on the last day in favor of Chris Stewart.  Now, we have Eli Whiteside and I think the only reason why the Yankees signed the guy is because they want to see how many times I can write Eli Whiteside, the full name into this post so I can just laugh at myself all night.

I can see it now...Spring Training:

Jeter: "Yo man, what's up, Derek Jeter..." (shakes hand)

Whiteside: "Eli Whiteside, nice to meet you."

Jeter: "Seriously?"

Whiteside: "Seriously..."

Anyway... look, the Yankees made a move, they nailed down Eli Whiteside.  Yankeeland rejoices and I wish Eli Whiteside the best of luck.

...11 times by the way... Eli Whiteside... 12. Am I the only one who thinks this guys name sounds funny? Oh God I'm tired.

MAKING A CASE FOR RUSSELL MARTIN

The Yankees and Russell Martin are trying to figure out a deal to bring him back to the Bronx, read that HERE.  According to Martin's agent, they've "had some initial conversations and they’ve expressed interest in bringing him back, but nothing substantial to date other than that... The organization, he loves it, working with the staff, manager, coaches and players. It was all very positive. We’ll see what happens as we move along here.” Look, that’s a good thing and I have to say, I hope it works out.

(In Photo: Mario Mendoza, 1980)
Look, Russell Martin had a horrible year offensively, batting just .211.  Mario Mendoza was a career .215 hitter after 9 seasons and his best year was in 1980 when he batting a career high .245. Sure, Martin doesn’t want to be in that sort of company, but let’s be honest, Russell Martin is not Mario Mendoza. Let’s do something here at BYB that no one else is doing, reassuring you of something… Martin just had a bad hitting hitting season.  Let’s call it what it is, a very bad slump, that’s it…and now we turn the page. Even Mario Mendoza would agree with that.

Defensively, I loved Martin behind the plate this year and I have his entire career. I thought he did a terrific job and in that regard, I understand why Brian Cashman once called Martin Munson-like (read HERE).  He’s tough as nails and I’d like to see more of that next season.
Let’s also not forget that Martin has some power too, hitting 21 homers this season, a career high, plus he knocked in 53 runs.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen often enough, and you know that looking at his .211 batting average.  But trust me, I’m not worried.  I believe if the Yankees sign Martin to come back, he will regroup, work out the kinks and get that average up again.
 (In Photo: Eli Whiteside)
Now what's interesting to me is why the Yankees seem to keep stockpiling catchers.  They have a guy like Chris Stewart there, Austin Romine in the minors and they suddenly claimed Eli Whiteside off waivers yesterday, read HERE. Meanwhile, the most passionate catcher in baseball, Francisco Cervelli is chomping at the bit to play, or even be the backup to Martin, OR dare I say, even be that 3rd catching backup / bench player....Cervelli just wants to be included because he believes he can contribute. Yet, the Yankees have done something surprising... they've shunned Cervelli.

Now I know Cervelli loves being on the Yankees, but he also loves playing baseball more, and it's my opinion that if he isn't getting what he needs to grow with the Yankees, 2 things need to happen; Cervelli either needs to demand a trade or walk away on his own.  It's not fair and he needs to take control of the situation himself.  I'm disappointed in what the Yankees have done to this guy and the signing of Whiteside is puzzling to me, but more on that in another post.

I actually find it equally hilarious that people are suggesting Mike Napoli may be the better catcher when comparing he to Russell Martin, and Napoli is a free agent as well.  Sure, Napoli is a gamer, but so is Martin.  Offensively, Napoli’s numbers don’t really impress me more that Martin's (Napoli: 24 HR, .227 AVG.) Plus, when watching catchers call a game, I again choose Martin, plus, the Yankees pitching staff love Russell.
At the end of the day, Martin’s my guy.  Sure, I bitched about him a lot this year, that’s because professional hitters need to hit professionally.  But the reality is, every player hits a slump once in a while too. Martin had his slump in 2012…let’s hope that’s the end of it. I trust that it is, I really do.

ELI WHITESIDE IS A YANKEE! WAIT, WHO?

That's right! The first big move of the winter for the Yankees and who isn't excited about Eli Whiteside?

It's true, it's being reported in the Mercury News, HERE, that the Yankees have claimed San Francisco Giants catcher Eli Whiteside off waivers. According to the News: "Whiteside will likely compete with another ex-Giants catcher, Chris Stewart, for a backup job with the Yankees.

The 33-year-old Whiteside spent most of the 2012 season with the Giants' Triple-A Fresno team, where he batted .224 in 60 games with one home run and 20 RBIs.

He appeared in just 12 games with San Francisco this season, going 1-for-11 (.091) with two RBIs, and was not on San Francisco's postseason roster."

There you have it, yet another catcher that the Yankees have picked up and Francisco Cervelli is just sitting there with huge opportunities in front of him and they just keep turning their back on him... what gives? I feel like Cisco's days are numbered...

Anyway, welcome Eli, good luck!
