STALLED YANKEES MISS BELTRAN BOAT BIG TIME!

It was a significant opportunity to get a power bat at a reasonable price and still have plenty of bread to upgrade our pitching, both in the front and back end of the rotation... and the Yankees blew it....what else is new?

I'll say it again... it was the perfect situation for the Yankees, and something they really needed.  They wanted to make a deal with Carlos Beltran and Beltran wanted a deal with the New York Yankees. It was simple; a 1 year deal at low money was perfect, because after all, the Yankees knew what they'd get with Beltran and Beltran ultimately wanted to retire in pinstripes.

(May 21, 2016 - Source: Stephen Lam/Getty Images North America)
But none of that happened, probably because Cashman wasn't given the OK from a slow moving Yankee brass that doesn't actually know what it wants.  And so, because there was a worry of not getting what he wanted, Beltran pulled the trigger early and went with another team... a team he was also familiar with. A team that likes him and is building their roster for a win next season.  Good for them.

Photo: Getty Images
The Astros signed Carlos Beltran a one year deal for the same amount that could have easily been offered by the New York Yankees.  Everyone has this story, but we'll plug Bob Nightengale on this one:
And so, this leaves the Yankees with their dick in their hands and now forced to spend MORE money than they actually wanted to on a DH and I guess... possible first baseman.

(Oct. 18, 2016 - Source: Vaughn Ridley/Getty Images North America)
Edwin Encarnacion will now be seriously considered, and ultimately will screw any significant chance of the Yankees also landing top closer Aroldis Chapman because, as you know, money just got tight in the Yankees pocket book and trying to sign both of those guys this off season will be tricky at the money and years they want.

(Aug. 1, 2016 - Source: Andy Lyons/Getty Images North America)
So now what?  Matt Holliday? Not sure he's much better than a Carlos Beltran but makes sense. Maybe Mike Napoli? Again... same drill, but I just don't know.  I guess the difference is guys like Napoli and Edwin can play first. But if the Yanks have Greg Bird, Tyler Austin... why worry about that? Again, I have no idea what the Yankees are thinking here allowing Beltran to walk to Houston. It was an easy one.

Photo: Getty Images
In the end, this Yankee team needs a starter or 2, and a big time closer.  Chapman needs to be that closer. The starters? They will figure that out, and to be honest, I don't have a dog in that fight... I just want an upgrade to help out Sabathia and friends.

(Oct. 6, 2016 - Source: Scott Halleran/Getty Images North America)
But when it came to a power bat... Carlos Beltran was the ultimate prize here. Switch hitter with pop... cheap and a single year contract.  But that didn't happen... and now the Yanks have to worry about how much money they will be doling out for "power bats" AND pitching....
Makes no sense to drag your feet like that... it just doesn't.

BRANDON MOSS IS A YANKEE OPTION

(Sept. 29, 2016 - Source: Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images North America)
Several publications are talking about this Yankee bat option, and I think it all started with Jon Heyman.  Whatever man... the guys gotta start the clicks somehow, although, truth be told, it's a great idea and it turns out the Yankees have in fact reached out about the services of Brandon Moss.  The question is, is it something they really want, or are they just checking out everything before they narrow it down.

I'm telling you... I am hearing more and more that Carlos Beltran will be the guy the Yankees will get back for a few reasons.  They're familiar, the money dulled out will be cheaper and ultimately they know he can help them with his bat from both sides of the plate. Read BYB's exclusive nugget on that. It's called THAT CARLOS BELTRAN REUNION IS REAL.  But hey... back to that Brandon Moss story, right?

(Aug. 10, 2016 - Source: David Banks/Getty Images North America)
Jon Heyman writes: "In addition to the previously mentioned Chapman and Kenley Jansen as Yankees targets, plus hitting stars Carlos Beltran, Edwin Encarnacion, Yoenis Cespedes and Jose Bautista, the Yankees have called upon several more top free-agent hitters, including Dexter Fowler, Matt Holliday, Mike Napoli and Brandon Moss..."

That's how it started.   Now everyone has something to say about it.  I'm not gonna go down that list. I will however give you this nugget from ESPN on the Brandon Moss line:

(Aug. 27, 2016 - Source: Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images North America)
"Moss, 33, slashed .225/.300/.484 with 28 home runs and 67 RBIs, although he struggled down the stretch -- hitting just .091 over his final 110 plate appearances. The 10-year veteran outfielder/first baseman owns a career .241 batting average."

I'd be curious to see what happens next.

CESPEDES SIGNS...

Thank God it's not with the Yankees.

(Sept. 17, 2016 - Source: Adam Hunger/Getty Images North America)
Turns out Yoenis Cespedes really likes the Mets, and the Mets like him.  Good for us.

According to several sources, but we'll go with the New York Post on this one...

(Aug. 28, 2016 - Source: Rich Schultz/Getty Images North America)
"Yoenis Cespedes is returning to Flushing, after agreeing to a four-year contract Tuesday worth $110 million that will keep his big bat in the middle of the Mets lineup.

According to an industry source, the 31-year-old outfielder – who still must pass a physical for the deal to become official – received a full no-trade clause in a contract that will pay him an annual average of $27.5 million through 2020. The annual average is the highest ever for an outfielder."

I'm happy about this. Happy because the Yankees were never really interested in the guy, and happy we didn't do something stupid and sign him.

Let the Mets have him.  I'm good with that.

(Oct. 8, 2016 - Source: Vaughn Ridley/Getty Images North America)
Now you gotta wonder if the Yanks will get serious about Edwin Encarnacion, or go the other rout of a Mike Napoli, Carlos Beltran or Matt Holliday instead.  Those last three are obviously a helluva lot cheaper.

Stay tuned.

YANKEES EYEING MATT HOLLIDAY

(Sept. 29, 2016 - Source: Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images North America)
I say that loosely.  I feel like it's more like... they know he's out there...

Yes, it's true the Yankees have inquired about Matt Holliday, but they are also very much in the mix for guys like Carlos Beltran and Edwin Encarnacion as well.

According to Jon Heyman...

(July 27, 2016 - Source: Rob Foldy/Getty Images North America)
"In addition to the previously mentioned Chapman and Kenley Jansen as Yankees targets, plus hitting stars Carlos Beltran, Edwin Encarnacion, Yoenis Cespedes and Jose Bautista, the Yankees have called upon several more top free-agent hitters, including Dexter Fowler, Matt Holliday, Mike Napoli and Brandon Moss, and are believed to have checked in with the better starting pitchers on the market, including Rich Hill and Jason Hammel."

(Oct. 29, 2016 - Source: Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images North America)
Yeah, that's right. Dexter Fowler of the Cubs is on that list as well as Mike Napoli.  We wrote about Napoli in MIKE NAPOLI IS NOT A NEW YORK YANKEE. Check it out.

But Holliday is an interesting one.  I mean, he still has pop in his bat, he's 36 years old  though.  You gotta wonder if this is just another Travis Hafner type situation all over again.

(July 3, 2013 - Source: Hannah Foslien/Getty Images North America)
Bronx Baseball Daily writes of Holliday: "Holliday finished the season with the St. Louis Cardinals where his average dipped from 2015. In 110 games, Holliday hit .246/.322/.461. However, his home run total was up from 2015, hitting 20 home runs and driving in 62 versus four homers and 35 RBI.

(Aug. 6, 2016 - Source: Michael Thomas/Getty Images North America)
Holliday has experienced health issues in the past; he last played at least 150 games in 2014 where he hit .272/.370/.441. However, Holliday would be a powerful bat in the lineup at DH should the Yankees choose to go that route."

Bottom line, I'm kind of over the old guys, although this is intriguing.  We'll keep an eye on this though, just in case.

MIKE NAPOLI IS NOT A NEW YORK YANKEE

(Nov. 1, 2016 - Source: Gregory Shamus/Getty Images North America)
My buddy Skip walked up to me before... "Yanks are close to signing Mike Napoli. Did you see that?"

"Um, no... are you kidding?"  I was baffled. Partly because I'm usually very up to speed with the Yankee moves, but I have to tell you, I was wondering if I missed something when I was taking a leak or something.

"I'll find out in 2 seconds," I said and with that, I texted my son.

"Where did you hear that??? NO!! Astros are interested in him. I haven't seen the Yanks connected!" He wrote me back.

I was quick to squash the "Napoli to the Yankees" rumor.  And that my friends is a small batch of how the Baseball Rumor Mill works. We weed through what's true and what's false to find the truth for our BYB audience.  My kid is Bleeding Yankee Blue's secret weapon.

(Oct. 31, 2016 - Source: Elsa/Getty Images North America)
I'm not saying Mike Napoli won't become a Yankee.  He's cheaper than Edwin Encarnacion, he can DH, play first and platoon with Greg Bird... but the bottom line is I just don't see it.

You see, it all started with the New York Daily News piece today when they suggested Napoli could be the perfect fit for the Yanks.  They wrote:

"If the Yankees are itching to bring in a veteran bat, go get Mike Napoli.

(Oct. 31, 2016 - Source: Gregory Shamus/Getty Images North America)
The 35-year-old will likely be looking for no more than a two-year deal, making him the ideal placeholder while the Yankees work toward their two primary goals: getting a real look at their young talent, and trimming the payroll beneath the luxury tax threshold, whatever that number might be in 2018."

Not a bad idea... I mean that, but it hasn't happened and not only that, this is just spit balling by the Daily News. Who the hell knows if Cashman even considered this guy.

Anyway, enjoy the story... or non-story here, but from now on, all trades need to be run by my 14 year old son, who will give you the 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down'.  This one... nothing happened, and so yeah... it's the big 'thumbs down'.

HEY DOUCHEBAG... THIS MEANS WAR!

I don’t like Mike Napoli.  I think he fell into some luck signing with Boston and winning a championship. I think he’s clutch when he needs to be, and injured more than he's clutch.  I also think that he spoke out of turn calling Masahiro Tanaka an “Idiot” for him throwing Nap a fastball the other night… a fastball that Napoli deposited into the seats.  But one thing Napoli doesn’t seem to understand is this; He's enraged a Yankee fan base for attacking our Golden child.  Sure, the Yankees may be losing right now, and we might be down… but we, as a team, as a family are not out! He has angered us.

Napoli said this of Tanaka... and this comes from the Sporting News report:

"After ripping a solo home run off Masahiro Tanaka in the ninth, Napoli celebrated in front of Boston's dugout. He can be heard exclaiming "What an idiot!" to his teammates in reference to Tanaka's decision to throw the fastball that sealed the Yankees' fate."

Now, let’s be fair, this is the third guy that has something derogatory or negative about Japanese import Masahiro Tanaka.   Jose Bautista suggested early on that Tanaka was “no big deal”.  Adam Jones asked the press why don’t’ they ask Tanaka about Jones? I laughed at that.

Napoli is not a great baseball player. He’s a guy who’s having a nice streak. I'll go further;  I think Napoli is showing selfishness here. I think he’s jealous of the fact that he’s never truly been part of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry. You know, the way it used to be, because let’s be honest… this rivalry seems stale to me. New faces, losers, stupid beards and arrogance reeks in Beantown. Napoli leads the morons. He needs to settle down.   Hey, maybe Napoli is just trying to rev up the Yanks and make them angry.  Or maybe he’s just stupid.  One thing I do know, Yankee fans are mad.  We don’t like lip aimed at our guys.  Now a dude who's Japanese born is in his first season in the Majors and getting attacked… why?  I mean, think about it… it’s baseball. Tanaka probably trusted his stuff enough to throw a fastball past fatso Napoli.  The only problem was Napoli cranked it. That’s the game. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Tanaka was probably disappointed, but Tanaka forgot about it… until, of course he was called an idiot.

Now, Tanaka is a professional, and he won't make a big deal about it. But, trust me, he's a ballplayer. He’ll keep it in the back of his mind. In fact, all the Yankees will. Because it’s my guess that the next time we face Napoli, we should seriously consider putting one in his ear.

Baseball players don’t forget disrespect.  Napoli did something foolish… and he needs to pay. That's the bottom line.  Who knows… maybe it will fire up the Yankees.  Maybe it will wake us up.  After all, it’s time.

Hopefully it does… and hopefully Napoli will end up with egg on his face… and maybe even an imprint of baseball laces on the side of his head.

Hey Douchebag… this means war!

"RUN, DUMMY!"

It took me a little while to calm down and organize my thoughts for this post. On one hand I have had the opportunity to meet and talk with David Ortiz and found him to be one hell of a good guy. He is funny, personable and overall a class act…off the field. On the other hand, I had lost my voice from screaming at the television when he pulls his classless showboating act after taking a pitcher deep. Do you remember that from the other night? It was utterly embarrassing! His trot around the base path is excruciating and the epitome of what NOT to do as a professional athlete. In the words of Durham Bulls’ Great Crash Davis, “RUN DUMMY!”

Now we all KNOW that any and all members of the Red Sox Nation who might read this will immediately dismiss it. They lose their chowdah at the thought of a Yankee fan taking their eloquent designated hitter (This is our F%#*ing City!) to the proverbial “Woodshed”. Hey, Boston, with all due respect, GET BENT! You know these same folks would collectively need blood pressure medication if an opposing power hitter marveled at his handy work at the expense of Jawny Lestah, Clay, Jake or Dubrawnt. That is as factual a statement as saying the sun rises in the East and sets in the West, gang. Boston isn’t immune to the double standard. Believe it.

So the other night Ortiz, who looked foolish in every other at bat, took new Yankee import Masahiro Tanaka deep…good for you, Papi. You are an outstanding hitter and feast off the mistakes left up in the zone. There is no denying that. You’ve been doing it for years…SO ACT LIKE YOU’VE BEEN THERE BEFORE! You don’t get style points here. Let’s go! Make it around the bases as if you have respect for the your opponent and the game. I mean when Papi does finally cross home plate and points to the sky to thank God. You can almost hear the Almighty saying, “Hey! What took you so long? I gave to two strong legs, David. Run my son!”

The Yanks won Tanaka’s Fenway debut handedly and the back-to-back dingers the young righty served up to Ortiz and Mike “Looks like an extra from the movie Gettysburg” Napoli didn’t matter in the end. But believe me when I tell you that Masahiro, and more importantly Brian McCann, won’t forget Ortiz and his lame pause in the batter’s box and sightseeing stroll around the diamond. David may have only succeeded in focusing the Yankee staff even more. Way to be, champ. I bet even Pedy rolled his eyes at “Big Poser’s” stop and stare routine. It’s as stale as that guy who shouts “Play Free Bird!” at concerts.

The thing that has always bothered me about the Sox is that they seem to play with “Conduct Unbecoming of The Rivalry” and always get a pass. Ortiz and Manny with their showboating, Boston pitchers constantly throwing at Yankee batters (Look it up. They plunk us at like a 20 to 1 clip) and the needless bulletin board jabs from ownership and players like Jonny Gomes of all people!

I am getting tired of the Yanks allowing it to happen. Yes, beating the Boston and acting like it’s business as usual is the best way to win. Treating them like they don’t matter much burns them and fires up their massive Town vs. City inferiority complex. But I’m all for sending a  message here and there. I am hoping McCann let’s Big Papi know the next time the two clubs play that showing up a New York pitcher ain’t gonna happen on his watch. I want a little bit of the “Bronx Zoo” back. Goose, Nettles, Munson would have put Ortiz and his manicured beard in the ICU at Mass General.

I’m not looking for David to get injured mind you, but set him straight. He has meant a great deal to the city of Boston, the organization and Baseball…but in my opinion there is a reason a guy like Derek Jeter will receive a league-wide farewell tour and why Big Papi won’t. Sox fans (Hell, all fans really) despise ARod, and rightly so. But maybe Ortiz should ask himself after crushing a hanging slider out to the STOP & SHOP sign, “What would Alex do?” and then do the exact opposite.

You are better than that, Papi…aren’t you?

DOMINATION IN FENWAY!

The Yankees need to beat the Boston Red Sox every time they play them.  That should always be the plan.  Tonight, despite the boos and signs that read ELL$BURY, they stood like professionals with 1 mission... win.  Behind Masahiro Tanaka, they scored 9 runs, had 15 hits, and never looked back.  They didn't flinch tonight... that's the way I like my Yankees.

Jacoby Ellsbury is batting .342 this season. Tonight he was 2-5 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. He had a double and a triple and the message was clear, "You can boo all you want... you let a good player walk to a rival. Big mistake."

Tanaka went 7.1 innings. He gave up 2 runs and struck out 7.  He gave up back to back homer to David Ortiz and Mike Napoli, but what pitcher doesn't have problems with those guys? It was simple; he missed his spots those times. Life goes on.  Give Tanaka credit, he pitched real well. He is legit.  Dellin Betances followed and gave up only 1 run.  He too looked good. He's developing into what the Yankees wanted from him a few years ago. I like that.

It's evident the Yankees are feeling good about themselves right now. Offensively, they're solid.  Brian McCann was 3-4 tonight.  Ichiro was 2-4 tonight and currently has a .371 AVG.  Carlos Beltran cranked out a homer.  Even Derek Jeter looked great tonight! Things are happening ladies and gentlemen, and it has #2814 written all over it.   Yes, the bullpen is alittle weak, but with David Robertson being activated from the DL today, and a guy like former Yankee, Hector Noesi being DFA'd by the Texas Rangers today (Dallas Morning News HERE), moves can be made. I'm not saying we're going to make major moves, but I am saying the Yankees will improve. DRob provides leadership, and while Noesi may or may not be on the Yankees radar, all I'm saying is, there are options. Maybe he could be an extra option for them.

Look, in the end tonight, the Yankees looked great... dominant, and full of energy in Fenway.  Let's keep it going boys... I like what I see!

Final: Yankees 9 - Red Sox 3.

THE "TOLD YOU SOs" WERE WRONG

Oh how they were out in force.

The “I told you so” fans were relishing the fact that our Yankees starters were dropping like flies in the final game of the series with our bitter rivals, the Boston Red Sox. Even though they claim to be fans of the Bombers, one could sense the excitement in their tweets increase with each announcement of physical set back as the game progressed.

First, before the contest even got underway, word came that our captain Derek Jeter would sit out the second straight game with “tightness in his quad”. Then we found out that second baseman Brian Roberts was experiencing back spasms and would be sent for an MRI.  Rising star Yangervis Solarte would start in his place, moving over from third.  Our other baby Bomber on the rise, Dean Anna, would take Jeter’s spot at short.

The “told you so” crowd was in their glory.  “See”, they said, “we knew this team was too old to hold up”.  Immediately there were calls for the Yankees to seek out Scott Boras and woo his over-priced client Stephen Drew, ignoring the fact that the shortstop is oft-injured himself (he’s managed to play in 150 or more games just three times in his career – the last time being 2010).

Just what we need; throwing more money at a player who will play in perhaps 80% of available games and hit .113 in the post-season (as he did last October).

So, we are down two starters before the first pitch could even be tossed, and we have a pitcher in Ivan Nova whose prior outings were erratic at best.

With backup catcher Francisco Cervelli at first, Solarte at second, Anna at shortstop and Kelly Johnson at third (moving over from first base to fill the hole made by moving Solarte over) the naysayers were basking in their hindsight.  Yes, “their favorite team” was surely doomed.  This game would be a lost cause.

A few of us kept hope that the Yankees would take the field and play the game in spite of the fact that clearly the outcome was predetermined.  After all, the “told you so” fans are always right; just ask them.

After two innings we were down a run, 1 – 0.  The game was going according to the prognosticators’ plans. Only that’s where their train-to-hell got derailed.

Rather than just call the game after two innings, as clearly the lamenters thought we should, our Bombers rallied. After a single from speedster Brett Gardner, “newbie” Carlos Beltran did exactly what he was brought to the team to do; drove a ball into the seats for a 2 – 1 lead.

Nova seemed to get better as the game wore on and going into the bottom of the fourth the Yankees maintained their run advantage.

With runners at the corners and just one out in the bottom of the fourth, Cervelli hit a grounder to third base that appeared to spawn an inning-ending double play.  The play at first base was close, and manager Joe Girardi challenged the initial “out” call.  After reviewing, the umpires decided that there was a tie at the bag and ruled Cervelli safe- allowing another run to score.  At this point Boston manager John Farrell went ballistic and was tossed from the game, mouthing expletives about the replay process as he walked from the field.  Lost in the insanity was the fact that our backup catcher (and current first baseman) pulled up lame as he crossed the bag.   He had to be helped from the field.  Add kindling to the “told you so” fire and another name to the walking (or limping) wounded list.

Using a creative means to solving a problem, Girardi called upon lessons learned in 2013 and inserted Ichiro Suzuki into right field and put our “Mr. Everything” Carlos Beltran at first base. Beltran has never played first.

In the top of the sixth the Red Sox cut the lead to 3 – 2 on a Mike Napoli home run.  It would have been a game-tying home run if not for a spectacular catch that Suzuki made on a shot off the bat of David Ortiz in the fifth.

Certainly the flood gates were about to open and our team would suffer the “red death” that so many in the social media world appeared to know would happen.

Only they were wrong, but not before they’d get one last log for their fire. In the bottom of the sixth, Solarte hit a grounder to short and hustled towards first (you reading this Robinson Cano?).  After crossing the bag, he too limped noticeably.

Well, that was the crowning glory for our “Chicken Littles”.  Immediately a tweet flew out saying:

“We've seen it twice now. To those who ask why some runners slide into first, watch this Yankee game.”

Really?  As I recall, it has been scientifically proven that sliding/diving into first base actually slows you down.  If it were faster, wouldn’t sprinters dive or slide across the finish line?  I’m thinking that Josh Hamilton might have an opinion.

The truth of the matter for Solarte was that his hustle to first base didn’t result in his limp.  Instead, it was a poorly placed (depending on your rooting interests) tag by Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli. I just saw every guy in the audience wince. Solarte finished the game after regaining his composure.

And so did our Yankees.

Nova’s “in your face” start was complete after getting Xander Bogaerts to fly out opening the eighth inning.  Matt Thornton then retired David Ortiz on a fly, and David Phelps did his best “DRob” impression by loading the bases before striking out Mike Carp to end the threat.

Shawn Kelley, our closer du jour while Robertson is on the DL, put the Red Sox down in order (striking out two of three batters) in the ninth for the save.

The “I told you so” crowd has to be beside themselves. How could they have been so wrong? They were wrong because, while thin in depth, this Yankees team has talent with heart.  They have players willing to do whatever it takes to win, and they have a manager willing to trust that talent.

Going forward there will have to be moves made to account for the injuries suffered – of that there is no doubt.  But, before you start screaming that the likes of Stephen Drew or Ike Davis can heal all wounds, take a good look at what we already have in our organization.

Zelous Wheeler is hitting .421 at Scranton/Wilkes Barre.  Scott Sizemore – one of the odd men out in the battle for a backup infield spot- is hitting .344.

Shouldn’t we give them an opportunity to succeed or fail before we toss millions to other teams’ washouts? Right now, when our injuries mount, is the time when our team needs our support the most.  Rather than say “I told you so”, let’s rally behind them and believe in what we have.
