RICE HAS BEEN A REVELATION, BUT COULD THE DERBY COME BACK TO HAUNT HIM?

If there has been one constant bright spot in the Yankees' lineup this season, it's been Ben Rice.

What started as an opportunity has turned into a full-fledged breakout, and Rice has rewarded the Yankees' faith in him every step of the way. He's evolved into one of the most dangerous left-handed hitters in baseball, giving the lineup power, patience, and a mature approach that has made him one of the American League's biggest surprises.

At the All-Star break, Rice had established himself among the league leaders with 29 home runs, nearly 70 RBIs and an OPS hovering around .970, while consistently producing quality at-bats and driving the baseball to all fields. His advanced metrics are just as impressive, with elite exit velocities, hard-hit percentages and barrel rates confirming that this isn't smoke and mirrors—Ben Rice has become one of baseball's legitimate impact hitters.

Perhaps what's been most impressive is how complete his offensive game has become. Rice isn't simply swinging for the fences. He's taking walks, hitting with runners in scoring position, and consistently delivering in big moments. Whether he's launching tape-measure home runs or lining doubles into the gap, he's become the type of hitter opposing pitchers genuinely fear.

He's been everything the Yankees could have hoped for—and then some.

That made Monday night's Home Run Derby such an interesting—and perhaps concerning—storyline.

Rice accepted the invitation to participate, making it a memorable family affair by having his father, Dan, throw batting practice to him. It was one of the more heartwarming moments of All-Star Week and something Rice will undoubtedly treasure forever. Unfortunately, the results on the field weren't nearly as memorable.

Rice managed just seven home runs, the fewest of any participant, and was eliminated in the opening round. Afterward, he admitted he became overly anxious and rushed his swing instead of staying within himself. Even so, he called the experience a success because he was able to share it with his father.

The Derby itself isn't the concern.

What happens after the Derby is.

For decades, baseball has debated the so-called "Home Run Derby Curse." Is it real? Or is it simply coincidence?

There have certainly been players who fueled the legend.

Bobby Abreu put on one of the greatest Derby performances ever in 2005, crushing an astonishing 41 home runs in the opening round. But after the All-Star break, his production dipped noticeably, and many pointed to the Derby as the culprit.

Josh Hamilton's unforgettable 2008 Derby performance remains one of baseball's iconic moments after he blasted 28 first-round home runs. While he remained productive overall, his second-half numbers declined, reigniting debate about whether the Derby had altered his swing or simply worn him down.

Aaron Judge experienced something similar in 2017. After winning the Derby in Miami, his second-half production dipped significantly. Was it because of the Derby? Or because pitchers adjusted to him and the grind of a 162-game season caught up with a rookie? Even Judge himself has never blamed the event, but the discussion has lingered for years.

Of course, there are just as many examples proving the opposite.

Pete Alonso has won multiple Home Run Derbies without seeing his swing disappear afterward. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has participated and continued producing. Juan Soto has remained one of baseball's elite hitters regardless of Derby appearances.

That's what makes this debate so fascinating. Is there truly a curse? Or do fans simply remember the slumps and forget the players who kept right on hitting? Now that question belongs to Ben Rice.

Could one night of trying to launch every baseball into the upper deck throw off the smooth, controlled swing that has made him one of the Yankees' best hitters? Could his timing be affected? Could he begin overswinging in search of home runs?

Or will this simply become a fun memory from an incredible first half before he picks up exactly where he left off?

Personally, there's every reason to believe Rice will be just fine.

Everything we've seen this season suggests he's more than just a slugger. He's a disciplined hitter with an advanced understanding of the strike zone, tremendous bat speed, and a mature offensive approach that doesn't rely solely on brute force. Those qualities generally survive temporary mechanical hiccups.

Still, baseball is a game built on rhythm, timing and routine. Even the smallest change can snowball into something larger. The Yankees don't just need Ben Rice to be good in the second half. They need him to continue being one of the most dangerous hitters in their lineup. If he does, the Yankees' offense remains capable of carrying this club deep into October. If the Derby somehow disrupts that rhythm—even temporarily—it becomes one of the more intriguing storylines to watch over the next several weeks.

Hopefully, years from now, fans will remember Ben Rice's first Home Run Derby not because it started a slump, but because it marked the season he officially announced himself as one of baseball's brightest young stars.

The Yankees—and their fans—are certainly hoping that's exactly how this story ends.

HALL OF FAME 2020 COULD BE A ONE-MAN SHOW

I don't understand how some people can say baseball is boring. There's so much strategy and I love how things can change in a game faster than you can blink. All of the walk off home runs or the unbelievable plays and the pitchers duels keep me interested. Then there's also just the human interest side of it. We all have our favorite players, Mariano Rivera was mine. I loved watching him play and I loved watching him get inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame this weekend. But have we just seen the most interesting Hall of Fame class for years to come?

It's been fun to watch all of these new names be added to Cooperstown recently. In the last 6 years, the Hall has been working overtime making new bronze plaques for their 29 new additions. That's more guys added to the Hall in the last decade without including the 17 Negro Leaguers that were inducted back in 2006. So, can the trend continue?

It doesn't look likely. According to baseball reference HERE the 2020 potential Hall of Fame Ballots there could be fewer bronze plaques being made not only for next season, but for a few years to come. Looking ahead to next year's first year eligible players include: Bobby Abreu, Jason Giambi, Cliff Lee, Josh Beckett, Eric Chavez, Alfonso Soriano, Adam Dunn, Paul Konerko and Derek Jeter.

The biggest name on the list goes without saying, and that's Derek Jeter. The rest of the guys on the list for the first time were all good players, but even media outlets like Newsday are wondering.....could Derek Jeter be the only one inducted into Cooperstown next year? Could it be unanimous? Rivera was the first to get a unanimous vote, could Jeter be the second?

The first year ballots are not as exciting as recent years so that theoretically opens the door for players returning to the ballot to possibly earn extra votes. But would they get enough votes? The player with the highest votes from last year is Mr. Controversial Curt Schilling with 64.7% of the votes. After some stupid and racist comments back in 2015 and 2016 that hurt his votes he has won back a surprising number of votes the last couple of years which has inched him closer to the needed 75% to be voted in.

So whether you like Schilling or not, the smaller pool of eligible players may help him get voted into Cooperstown. His eventual election into Hall of Fame looks like it is getting more likely. He may not get in next year, but he may get in by 2021 which is his ninth year on the ballot.

The upcoming first year players through 2023 look pretty uninteresting compared to recent years. We could see very small classes for the foreseeable future. Is Jeter the only inductee next season? It will be interesting to see how many votes Jeter does get, and if anyone else shares the stage with him.

YANKEES & FANS INSPIRED BY #2

I don't wear jerseys.  Something happened to me when I turned 40 a few years ago. I rarely wear a jersey in public.  It's not something I strategically planned, it just happened. I have some classics in my closet.  Jorge Posada. Hideki Matsui. Even Bobby Abreu and Hiroki Kuroda.  I also have #2, Derek Jeter. Today, when I went to the ball game, I chose #2 instead of BYB... instead of a nice golf shirt, instead of one of my Marvel T-shirts.  I chose #2 because I knew everyone else would too.  I made the trek to Yankee Stadium for most likely the last time this season.  My wife and I went on a date, to see the Captain play another home game... and one of the last ones he will ever play in the Bronx. EVER. That sentence alone is killing me.  Anyway, I wasn't sure how it was going to be today, I mean, the Yankees don't exactly light it up anymore, but the good Lord was watching... and it was a good day at Yankee Stadium.

The place was electric and packed and #2 is literally everywhere now.  It's no longer the newly celebrated ad campaign by the Yankee owners from my previously attended game on September 7th, Derek Jeter day.  Today, it seemed much, much bigger.  The Yankee organization is literally cashing in on everything "Jeter", and I get it, and at times I even felt queasy about it because I know they've stepped it up to perhaps cloud the fact that the playoffs may not happen.  But it is also a major celebration. And fans are buying anything that reads "Jeter" and #2, and I get that too.  No question, it felt good walking through the stadium knowing that all of us have witnessed greatness all these years. Derek Jeter is a living legend and  I couldn't be happier.

The plan was simple, we were to grab a few Margaritas and then get to the food and then up to the seats. It was a sell out, it had to be. I haven't seen that many people since the ALCS in 2009. It was awesome.

Masahiro Tanaka gave up a run in the first inning.  It was a surprise, but expected, especially because he's been on the shelf for a bit.  Tanaka settled down and looked good after that.  He went 5.1 innings, gave up 5 hits and only 1 run.  The only other run was given up by Dellin Betances who gave it up on a Edwin Encarnacian RBI single in the 8th. Other than that, the pitching was quite good.  Adam Warren looked decent and David Robertson closed, his 38th of the year.

But it was offense that impressed me the most today.  In the 1st, Brian McCann hit a solo shot, his 21st homer of the year.  In the 5th, Brett Gardner hit a solo shot.  At that point it was 2-1 Yanks.  The game seemed slow after that, so another Margarita round was in order.

Once we took our seats again, we were just in time for the Jeter rally.  In the 7th inning, with Brett Gardner on base, Derek Jeter doubled down the left field line knocking in Gardy.

The place went absolutely crazy and as Derek Jeter stood on second, and once the replay ran, the big screen had a close up of Jeter's face as he stood on second base.  I looked at it more than I normally would and I don't exactly know why. But as I was watching him look around the stadium, I was thinking about what he could be thinking about.  He was looking around the ballpark, almost like he was taking it all in.  Still stoic, yet he appeared to be reflecting.  It seemed like it was coming together for him... the end was near.  The close up may have lasted only 30 seconds, but it seemed like 20 minutes and as the place continued to chant, "Der-ek Jet-er" with everyone still on our feet, it was almost like a moment of zen or an out of body experience.  It hit us all... the Captain had literally done it all. Once this season ends, he can walk away knowing he did. He conquered his profession, he inspired fans, his teammates it was a great moment. It won't be reported ladies and gentlemen, but that's why we're here... the softer side of baseball. We're about the raw emotion at BYB and I was glad to report that moment.

The rally didn't end there. As we resumed play, Jeet stole 3rd. Just alittle extra for his resume. But if you were to ask him, "He needed to get in scoring position so the team had a chance." And they did. The next pitch was planted in the right field seats by Brian McCann, his second of the day, and just like that, it was 5-1.

The game officially ended 5-2, but there was no question, for me, for my wife, it was a date to remember.  You can say alot about great ball players and there's always a "but." Not Derek Jeter though.  You can always find the flaw, but not in Jeter.  And, there is always the debate of whether or not a player is worthy of the Hall of Fame.  But with Derek Jeter, there is no debate.  Jeter is a 5 time World Champion, not as an individual, but as part of some pretty incredible clubs.  Sure, he's happy about the awards, the individual achievements, but it's those championships that he cherishes and that's why we love him.

And I think back to that moment of Jeter standing on second base in the 7th again, and I think about what could be going through his mind.  At one moment, I even thought to myself, maybe he's thinking, "Well, we could have another ring, but we're running out of time." Maybe, who knows.  And maybe now my mind is wondering, but one thing is for sure, that rally was big today, if not so much for the win, at least for us fans who snapped away on our phones and cameras at every moment he stepped to the plate or swung.  It was a special day, and for the next few days at Yankee stadium, it will be equally rewarding as we say goodbye to the Captain.  He did it his way since day 1, and I'm damn proud to have seen him play.

Final: Yankees 5 - Blue Jays 2

HOLY COW! GUESS WHAT HAPPENED TO ABREU NOW?

That rhymes.

It's been confirmed that Bobby Abreu has signed a minor league deal with the New York Mets.  Clearly the Mets saw something in Abreu and are willing to give him a shot.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com has Tweeted it below:
Well then. With that Mets team, it is very possible we could see Bobby Abreu get to the Bigs again! Good for him.

Just wanted to keep the #BYB family in the loop. Enjoy your Tuesday.

GUESS WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR PAL, BOBBY ABREU?

Earlier this offseason there was important news about Bobby Abreu.  He had been given a shot to try and come back to baseball when the Philadelphia Phillies offered him a contract.  Read BOBBY ABREU'S BACK IN BASEBALL! for that whole recap, but in a nutshell, ESPN, wrote then, "Abreu will make $800,000 if he makes the Phillies roster out of spring training, a baseball source told ESPN.com."

Well, the news today is he didn't make the Phillies.  I know, you're sad for him. I know I am. According to Jim Salisbury of CSN, it didn't work out:
OK. So there you have it. You have to wonder now if Bobby will try to continue at this point, or will just end it.  Whatever the case, who doesn't love Abreu? Who doesn't love the effort. I applaud him. He was a good soldier in New York and a good ballplayer.  I don't know... I was pulling for the guy.

What can I say, I root for the believer.

Good luck Bobby.

I DON'T WANT TO HEAR THIS, MARK TEIXEIRA!

Some things I don’t mind hearing about.  I like to hear positive things.  If Ty Hensley was able to raise a ton of money for BeEdmond… I love that and I’m all in (Read NEW TY HENSLEY INTERVIEW: CLIMBING THE MOUNTAIN).  When players like Bobby Abreu are able to come back to baseball and try to make a pro team again... like the Phillies, again, I love that. It’s a story about “the comeback” and I can’t resist to read and write about it.

I tried to stay positive all throughout Derek Jeter’s ankle injury and recovery last season, but whenever I’d find that positive nugget, there would be a setback and eventually, Jeet was put on a shelf.  I wasn’t misinforming the audience. I was looking for the positive nuggets, the accurate nuggets to keep the BYB audience encouraged.  It never worked out last season.  This season however, it’s different. Derek Jeter IS 100%.  Jeter is NOT worried. Brian Cashman is NOT worried…

Then I read David Waldstein of the New York Times and he has a quote from Mark Texieira… and now I’m worried again.  Don’t know what I mean? Read this:

“Teixeira sustained a similar ankle injury while playing at Georgia Tech. If Jeter’s recovery is anything like Teixeira’s, he may not fully heal until after he retires. Jeter has said 2014 will be his final season, and some of it may be spent compensating for playing through soreness or weakness.

'I wasn’t right for two years,' Teixeira said.

Teixeira was 20 was he was hurt; Jeter is attempting to come back at 39."

I know, I know... someone tell me I worry too much. Please! I hope and I pray that because Tex and Jeter are different players, this Tex stuff won't affect Jeter's progress.  Lets hope Jeter is 100%. He's got to be right?   There’s no question though that now this will be in the back of my mind.

Also, I tip my cap to Waldstein. Great piece today, great nugget… but you’re worrying me sir.

BOBBY ABREU'S BACK IN BASEBALL!

Hey, give Bobby Abreu credit.  He hasn't been in the pros since 2012.  But after some hard work and dedication, Bobby Abreu has a job with the Philadelpiha Phillies.  I applaud him.

According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, Bobby's back:
The Abreu deal is a minor league deal according to ESPN, writing, "Abreu will make $800,000 if he makes the Phillies roster out of spring training, a baseball source told ESPN.com."

Good luck Bobby... you're a good dude... and you're 40 and still playing, God Bless ya old man. Now go climb the mountain one last time!

BOBBY ABREU IS STILL PLAYING... I SWEAR

Now, I guess playing and being "looked at" as possibly filling a position are 2 different things of course, but never the less, it's interesting that the Indians are serious about signing Bobby Abreu.  Plus, he's a former Yankee... so we take care of our own here and we report stuff like this...

Bobby Abreu is being scouted by the Indians.  That comes from Tony Lastoria:
Hey, good for Abreu.  If he can get back to the majors, I applaud him.  Again, the last team he played for was the Dodgers in 2012.

I was an Abreu fan when he was with the Yankees. I actually have an Abreu jersey.  I think I might have been the only one to make that purchase... but so what, I went for it.

If anything happens with Bobby, of course we will tell you here on BYB.

TOUGH BREAK FOR GRANDERSON

In today's exhibition game against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Yankees ended up losing 2-0 (read HERE) and lost Curtis Granderson for 10 weeks after getting hit and fracturing his forearm.  Tough break no doubt for the Yankees who were in the mist of an experiment of having Brett Gardner to move to centerfield and Curtis moving to left.  Is this earth shattering? Not exactly.

(In Photo: Matt Diaz)
So you're asking... now what? Many ideas are floating around.  The most likely scenario would be for the Yanks to use Juan Rivera and/or Matt Diaz.  Others are calling for the Yankees to look to a guy like Slade Heathcott, a kid with a lot of buzz surrounding him right now. In fact, the New York Post just did a nice profile on the kid. Read about that HERE.

Another scenario, which was suggested by Mark Townsend of Big League Stew, HERE, was that maybe the Yankees would explore options like free agents  Johnny Damon or Bobby Abreu.  I kind of find that to be silly, but it's actually not too far fetched. The Yanks are playing cheap right now and they could probably get those guys for next to nothing and the fans loved them while they were in the Bronx.

Whatever the case, it stinks but not the end of the world. True, I hate seeing dudes getting hurt in Spring Training just about as much as I hate seeing them get hurt in the World Baseball Classic or the All-Star Game.  All we can do now is wait and see how long it really takes and what the Yankees will do about their hole. The truth is... if you're gonna fracture a forearm... do it in the Spring and not the World Series.

RED SOX LOOKING AT MORE FORMER YANKEES

 (In Photo: Javier Vazquez)
First Bobby Abreu (Read BOBBY ABREU COULD SIGN WITH THE RED SOX?), now Javier Vazquez...seriously.

According to Victor Ramos of Solo Beisbol HERE, and translation below, the Red Sox checked out Vazquez who is looking to get back to a contender in the major leagues.

"EXCLUSIVE INFO << --- On Friday will be the "scouts" of the # RedSox and # Nationals Javier Vazquez seeing right at # SolaMorales."

You have to appreciate what the Red Sox are doing.  It's more about former Yankee players.  They signed some big free agents and now are filling the holes with veteran experience.  Who knows what will happen to Vazquez. It has been reported however that the Sox are unlikely to sign Abreu and the "look in" was merely for "background work", whatever that means... read HERE.

I appreciate the aggressiveness of the Sox right now...it's much more than the Yanks, you have to admit.

BOBBY ABREU COULD SIGN WITH THE RED SOX?

It almost seems like a bad joke or something, I mean Bobby was a good Yankee and I appreciated him while he was in New York. Now it seems as though, according to WEEI, HERE, the Red Sox are "working out" Bobby Abreu in an attempt to see if he's got anything left in the old tank. The report reads as follows:

"According to a major league source, the Red Sox have worked out veteran Bobby Abreu in Venezuela. As part of the workout, the team put the 38-year-old through drills at first base. It is believed the workout is part of both parties doing their due diligence, with it unclear if Abreu would even be open to playing first base, a position he hasn't manned during a 17-season major league career."
Here's the thing, the Red Sox need someone to play first base. They have a deal that they are currently trying to finalize with catcher and first baseman Mike Napoli. That deal is still not complete because they are working out the "verbiage" of the contract because of concern with a hip... read HERE.

They were also looking at Adam LaRoche, but then there was a report that they weren't "serious" about it because they didn't want to give up a draft pick to sign him, read HERE.

Now they are looking to a guy who's never played first place. Hey, take him.  Like I said, I always like Bobby, I loved him in New York. He did his job and contributed.  No, he was never a superstar in the Bronx, but I believe we got him when he was on his downside.  That being said, we got what we got and he was a good soldier.
Now, I guess if he feels the need to try and continue his career in a position he's never played, it could get ugly.  Ugly is good when we're deal with the Sox. In fairness, the Sox aren't looking to use the guy in all 162 games or anything.  It's most likely a backup situation, as well as DH and maybe outfield once in a while. That being said... I really can't see it. The guys 38 and doesn't exactly turn it on like Derek Jeter or anything, you know what I mean?

We'll let you know what happens next...

Please comment, we have DISQUS, it's easier than ever. Let me know what you think and follow me on Twitter @BleednYankeeBlu and join the group Bleeding Yankee Blue on Facebook, just type it in.

THE JETER JERSEY CRAZE SHOULD SHOCK NO ONE

When I was a kid, I worshiped Ron Guidry and then Rickey Henderson. I was a kid, a lefty with speed so those 2 guys were my idols. I had a Ron Guidry mitt that I still own and I remember I saw Rickey Henderson wear white cleats with the Athletics.
I insisted my mom buy me them for Little League. That never happened so I just wore my black Zipps and went for it. I never owned a jersey or shirt though. It wasn't until I was older and Don Mattingly was a superstar with the Yankees that I owned a T-Shirt with a #23 on the front and Yankees across the back shoulders that it was close enough to the real thing. I don't remember Jersey's being as big as they are now.
Today, my 10 year old has a bunch; CC Sabathia, Tim Tebow, the Manning brothers, forget it, he even has a Dennis Rodman one that I think was given to him as a hand me down. The point is, they're everywhere.

It was reported earlier in the week that Derek Jeter's Jersey is the most selling baseball jersey since July, read about it HERE. It doesn't surprise me, in fact, it makes me very happy. The Captain is the great role model for any kid, or adult to have. He's positive, he leads by example, he's a God. Women want to marry him and kids want to be him. And what does he do? He smiles, he thanks the Yankees for the opportunity all these years later and he just does his job...hit and play the game with better baseball instincts than anyone I've seen since Cal Ripken Jr.
I own a Jeter jersey, it was a must for me as well as a Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada one. I wear those three regularly but only during the playoffs. I rotate them... I'm a nerd, leave me alone.  I have a few retired jerseys too but I don't really wear them much anymore. A Johnny Damon road jersey, Bobby Abreu and Roger Clemens and yeah, sometimes when you have a few bucks, you buy a jersey on impulse. Don't judge me. I used to own a John Elway Broncos Jersey for a while. It wasn't the cool white or blue one either, it was the bright orange throwback #7.
I loved watching Elway play the game and I remembered Elway from his early days with the Yankees. Don't know what I'm talking about? Read WHY I REMEMBER "ELWAY THE YANKEE" AS CLEAR AS DAY.

So yeah, the jersey craze is great right now. The list breaks down like this:

(Courtesy: ESPN)

What's your favorite Jersey? Comment, tell me what you wear the most. BYB wants to hear from you.

THE TALE OF 3 (FORMER) YANKEES

Wondering what's happening with Johnny Damon, Bobby Abreu and Hideki Matsui? I do, check it out:

Johnny Damon: Damon signed late with the Cleveland Indians this year after Scott Boras told every team in Major League Baseball his client was worth $5 million for 1 year.  Well, so much for that, Damon didn't have a spring training and not only that, he ended up signing with the Indians for $1.25 million.  Look, my take on Damon is simple, he should have asked for $1 million in the first place and this way he would have been signed in February and training his old body early on. Instead, he showed up to the party late, because his agent was greedy and now news out of Cleveland is he has been Designated for Assignment by the Indians.  Read HERE.  In .207 at bats, Damon was batting .224 with 4 home runs.  What's next? Retirement?
Bobby Abreu:  It was clear to me that once Shane Victorino came to Los Angeles, there would be no room for Bobby Abreu, read HERE. He was Designated for Assignment. Abreu had a horrible season with the Angels and when he came to the Dodgers, he was shining a bit, buteven that didn't last. With the Dodgers, Bobby batted .251 with 2 home runs.

Hideki Matsui: Matsui requested a release from the Tampa Bay Rays after he was designated for assignment. Read HERE.  While Matsui was with the Rays he only batted .147 with 2 homeruns in 95 At Bats.  It wasn't a very nice ended for the man that all of us fell in love with in the Bronx.  Capital New York has a great piece about Matsui by Howard Megdal titled Remember Hideki Matsui as he was in the Bronx. Believe me, I definitely will.

WHY BYB HAS YOUR YANKEES NOTES

Jack Cust: The Yankees signed lefty lugger Jack Cust to a minor league deal. This was clearly done for a few reasons. Cust probably comes cheap and the Yankees are seeing nothing from Raul Ibanez right now so Cust is Ibanez insurance. It’s getting close to Opening day and they really need a Designated hitter who can…well… hit. Raul isn’t, Cust can, hopefully. If things work out we could see Jack Cust on the big roster, maybe along side Raul Ibanez, maybe with Ibanez released, but it’s clear the Yankees are losing patience. Not sure if you remember Cust with the Athletics from 2007 to 20009, but in case you don’t, he was valuable, hitting 28 home runs and walking over 100 times. That, my friends can be helpful. We’ll keep you posted if anything new develops with Cust.(In Photo: Tatum O'Neal)

Craig Tatum: Tatum was claimed off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. He’s 29 years old and is a catcher. The majority of his big league experience is in the minors, spending 8 seasons there. That’s all I got. It’s not too exciting, but I just wanted to keep you in the loop. Maybe it would have been more exciting if it was Tatum O’Neal… then again, that may also be really weird.

Bobby Abreu: There’s been plenty of internet chatter about the Yankees trading Freddy Garcia to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for Mr. Abreu. To be honest, with the minor league signing of Jack Cust, I just don’t see this happening anymore. Hell, I could be wrong but the timing now just seems wrong now. Anything can happen of course. Plus, Nick Swisher needs a backup in right once in a while, but one of my readers brought up a good point; do we really want a backup outfielder who’s afraid of the wall in right field? Sure we like Bobby's bat, but not so sure Abreu is the right defensive replacement. Thank you for that Carol.

Pedro Feliciano: Bryan Hoch writes HERE that Felieciano is hoping to try and play in 2012. God bless this guy. I’m pulling for him ,but I just don’t see it. He said of the possible come back: "Any time soon, I'll be helping the team... I'm a hard worker, and I know that I'm going to get back healthy." Goood luck Pedro, I'd love to see you throwing again.

Nick Swisher: Swisher played in a minor league game today and homered on his way back from his groin injury. It was his first game and went 4-8. According to the Washington Post, he has 2 singles, a double and a home run. Read HERE. It's good to see Swish is getting back on track.

WHY MY GUT SAYS FREDDY GARCIA IS LEAVING THE BRONX

I stated that once Freddy Garcia got hit in the hand back on March 14th by the comebacker, all eyes would then be on Phil Hughes. I suggested he needed to be perfect to nail the 5th spot in the rotation because no doubt, Freddy would miss a start and Phil could capitalize. It worked out that way. Read WHY HUGHES NOW GETS A CLOSER LOOK.

That being said, In Freddy Garcia’s return outing just a few days ago, he did damn good and at least for us bloggers and writers, we had something to write about.... we all blew up the rumored “competition” between Phil Hughes and Freddy Garcia again. Now, after much guess and info gathering by many of us, Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News says, while it won't officially be announced until next week, Phil Hughes has won the 5th spot in the rotation. Good for Phil...read HERE. Look, when it comes to Freddy Garcia, a guy whom the Yankees really like, it may not be in the cards anymore. Is it fair? No, but it’s business. I think back to that ridiculous report by Joel Sherman a few weeks ago when he suggested that the Yankees already had chosen Phil Hughes as their 5th starter but won’t announce it because they didn’t want Garcia to be offended. Read HERE. Sure, the report before a spring training game was even played seemed silly to me, but now that story makes more sense weeks later.

It’s smoke and mirrors with the Yankees sometimes, or that scene in Enter the Dragon when Bruce Lee walks into the mirror filled room to fight the enemy...you never know what to expect. Look the Yankees are all about what’s best for the Yankees, but even they respect their players. At the end of the day though, they don't truly tell you what's going on, until they do it. That being said, I believe they've always been rooting for Phil Hughes. I believe they needed it all to unfold the way it did. They wanted it appear like everyone was competing for a spot and then they’d narrow it down behind the scenes, and then publicly presented it as fair and square. Sherman seemed to have nailed it all along, and Feinsand confirmed it. Bravo. When Garcia got smacked in the hand, that was a bonus for them, it just made their decision easier. Couple that with Andy Pettitte un-retiring and returning to the Bronx and it’s clear that the writing is on the wall for “The Chief.” Sure, I have no proof, it's my opinion.... then again...maybe I'm just reading into it.

Then, suddenly, reports surface that the Yanks and Marlins briefly talked about a trade, and suddenly, Freddy Garcia’s on the trading block. Read HERE. The Marlins don’t seem interested, but mark my words, if Garcia was offered to the Marlins, no doubt he’s being offered elsewhere, because that’s how the Yankees work. And that’s why some of these Yankee sports writers are so good, because they always sniff out the story in some capacity. There were even talks that perhaps there's a fit for Garcia in Los Angeles with the Angels and the Yankees could get Bobby Abreu in return. It's interesting and it makes sense too. Read HERE.

It’s my opinion that based on all of my speculating above, Freddy Garcia will get traded. I don't know when, I don't know how, but the Yankees are sniffing around the hydrant. Look, Brian Cashman is a smooth operator. He may tell us all 1 thing, but he is always working the phones to do another, sometimes just keeping us off his scent totally. Don’t be surprised if one day you wake up and Freddy is gone.

And that being said, know this, Freddy is a damn good pitcher and he may deserve more respect, but this is baseball and it’s business. I'd love him to stay, I love him in the Bronx, but things are quickly changing as we are 1 week away from opening day. Sure, if the Yankees can use Garcia in the pen as a long-man, or in a starting capacity, I'm all for it. After all, I know he’ll do that too, he just wants to pitch, but at 35 let’s not forget that he can become a pretty valuable trading chip for something else the Yankees could use. Yeah it sucks, but it’s business. No… I don’t want to trade Freddy, but I see it happening, to better the team, that’s all, nothing more.
