WHY HUGHES NOW GETS A CLOSER LOOK

No doubt the liner that hit Freddy Garcia in the hand the other day is a concern to the Yankees. It doesn’t matter that tests were negative, getting hit in the hand with a baseball will keep you out of at least 1 start or more and believe me, if there’s soreness or swelling on Freddy's hand of any kind, the Yanks will focus more on Phil Hughes now and let Freddy heal.

No doubt there was a competition happening between Freddy and Phil and I suspect the situation Tuesday only hurts Freddy Garcia’s chances of trying to get sole possession of the 5th starter role. But, it depends on who you ask. Freddy Garcia is such a team player, he just wants to pitch and it doesn’t matter if he’s pitching on the side of the West Side Highway, the guy wants to be active with the Yankees and if that means the bullpen, so be it. Read HERE…. You have to respect his want and need to be part of this team any way he can.

To me, it makes no difference. As far as I’m concerned, may the best man win. Sure, injuries creep in and in the case of Freddy Garcia's comebacker to the hand, maybe he misses a start or 2, but at this point of Spring Training, every outing counts and every pitch counts…that’s just the way it is.

Phil Hughes is on his comeback tour and ready to pounce on a spot in the rotation. After all, he has a hell of a lot to prove this season after last year's shortcomings, he knows this, we know this, so at this point, everything needs to be perfect for Phil Hughes. If it is, he gets the starting role. If not, the competition may continue but make no mistake, Hughes must prove he’s the Phil Hughes of 2010 or who knows if that will happen.

We are just a few weeks away from Opening day, decisions are coming, stay tuned.
