THE WINNING THAT IS THE NEW YORK YANKEES

When the Yankees win, it's what's supposed to happen. When we were losing last month, and everyone was in a funk, fans included, there is no reason to talk about the New York Yankees. We were all complaining  that Chase Headley sucked and everyone was on the DL and Jacoby Ellsbury was the worst contract in baseball history...

(I actually think Pablo Sandoval's is, but that's me) and blah, blah, blah.

Now, we're winning and everything is wonderful. There's unicorns running around my backyard, and I feel like I'm on the top of the world.

Masahiro Tanaka set the tone tonight. 7 innings of 2 hit ball and he struck out 4.  Kirby Yates gave up the Rays only earned run and Aroldis Chapman shut them down after that.

The Yankee run scoring went like this:

In the 6th, Brian McCann grounded out into a force and in the process, Brett Gardner scored.  Then, shortly after, Alex Rodriguez homered. It was 2 run shot scoring McCann.

Then Carlos Beltran homered.  He is unbelievable this season. Those are your Yankee 4, and like I said, the Rays scored one when Steve Pearce homered in the bottom of the 9th.

So yeah, the Yankees appear to be winning folks, currently in 4th place in the AL East and 5.5 behind the first place Red Sox.  Things are happening, and I'm very happy about that. You should be too...

HAPPINESS & MOVING PAST ROBINSON CANO

For some people the decision that Robinson Cano made to leave the Yankees was and maybe still could be hard to accept. He was one of our own. He was young and he was the future of our team. But then he left and suddenly the future wasn't so clear. What was clear though was the perception that many fans had which was.....he left for the money. He was greedy.

I can't even imagine what $240 million dollars looks like and I probably won't even get to see a tiny fraction of that in my lifetime, but Cano does. I'm sure the years and the money were a major deciding factor for Cano to leave. He won't have to worry about getting that one last deal before he retires, like former teammate Mark Teixeira for example. He is past the prime of his career and has to worry about putting up the numbers this year if he wants that last three year deal before he walks away from the game. Nope, Cano is sitting pretty and has a secure job until he is forty if he chooses. No pressure there.

But there is still some pressure resting on his shoulders. For all of his years with the Yankees the expectation was always to win it all. Now he has a big contract, big expectations to go with it and a new goal. Seattle is no New York and early indications were the Cano was very unhappy. One of my favorite pieces on this was back in March 2014 called HEY DUMMY... because it was the first sign of disbelief and stress that his new team did not have the same philosophy as his old team. It gave Yankee fans a little insight as to how different life was for him with his new team and how hard his transition was.

They say money can't buy happiness and I have always thought that Robinson Cano would be the first one to admit to that, but now supposedly everything is good in Seattle. After two years of speculation that he really was unhappy he finally spoke out this week. Supposedly, everything is good now and he is happy, read that HERE. Before it was rumored that he felt disconnected from what he once knew and now suddenly things have changed.

Why is that? Now he says he is "having fun again." Does that mean he wasn't having fun before? A lot has changed since he has left New York. Baseball changes constantly but if you would have told me that the Seattle Mariners would've become relevant contenders in the AL West right now while the Yankees were struggling to pass the .500 mark in 2016 I wouldn't have believed you. So is it because the Mariners are in first place in their division and the Yankees.....aren't? I don't know. Or maybe because he now has the money, a top dog reputation, and is winning? It could be.

The truth is he could've had two of those three things if he would've signed that more modest contract offered by the Yankees, He could've been a winner....and he still would've had a nice contract. The one thing that he would not have until years down the road was the "leader" role. As long as Derek Jeter was a Yankee he wasn't going to be the top dog. Would he have had it eventually? I think so, but we all know what happened instead and we will never know what could have been.

So now Cano has it all....he has the money, the leader role, and he is winning. Well, he is winning in May. But he has helped revive the Mariners and turn the team around. Now they are competitive and may stay that way. He left New York and got the same thing he as looking for in Seattle. So Cano, if you really are happy then I am good with that. You can't afford to look back and wonder "what if" and most importantly....neither can we.

SWISHER'S WORLD

In April, Yankees made a lot of fans happy by signing Nick Swisher to a minor league deal. It was cheap, and would give us a little extra coverage at first, and a solid bat. It's a move that made sense for the team. But it's inching closer to June, and there has been no sign of Swisher in the Bronx yet.

There are a few things we know about the Swisher deal. He was signed to the minor leagues, with an opt-out date of June 15th, if he was still in Triple-A. Swish had a less that appealing last two seasons. After having arthroscopic surgery on both knees in 2014, 2015 also seemed to plague him with injuries. He finished the season only playing 76 games, and the Braves released him in March, despite owing him $15 million for the season.

Swish started strong in the minors. In April, YESNetwork.com reported that after 10 games with the RailRiders, Swish held the second highest batting average on the team at .368. That has since changed, however. It seems his hot streak has cooled off a bit. Swish is now batting .260, with 32 hits, 13 RBI's and 4 homers.

So what does this mean? Well, not much really. Remember the purpose of the signing was to have a backup at first base. Mark Teixeira is now in a slump, batting .195 with just 2 RBI's and no homers in May, and it's likely due to an injury. Or at least that is what I suspect. He now has to have an MRI for a neck injury and meet with team doctors.

This seems like the perfect opening to call up Swish, but Joe Girardi's options aren't limited and I see Dustin Ackley who is hitting .212 in May, manning the position instead. Of course, we'll have to wait on the findings from the MRI to be able to know for certain if the Yankees will have to call someone up or not.

With the Opt-out date only three weeks away, and Swish's bat fizzling out after a strong first few at-bats, I don't really see a scenario where the Yankees will call him up. It seems much more likely that Ackley would take over in in case of an absent Teixeira. They still have Ronald Torreyes at their disposal as well, although that would probably be a last ditch effort on their parts.

Because I am a biased Swisher fan, I'd like to say that he'd get the call-up, but realistically it's highly unlikely. The deal made sense for us, and for Swish at the time. We'd get insurance at first, and Swish could get one more shot at the majors, but the pieces just don't seem to be coming together like that for us.

I GUESS AROD TOOK TO REHAB IN TRENTON

Small story, but important just because many of us thought Alex Rodriguez would return to the Bronx Tuesday, only for it not to happen and he went to Trenton to play with the Thunder for a few "rehab" games. Anyway, something happened last night...

According to MLB.com, "Alex Rodriguez went 1-for-2 with a mammoth two-run home run against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at ARM & HAMMER Park on Wednesday night in the second game of his rehab stint with Double-A Trenton.

Rodriguez is expected to be activated from the disabled list for the Yankees' 4:05 p.m. ET series finale against the Blue Jays on Thursday."

Alex will definitely help a Yankee club that appears to be rolling right now, despite last night's loss to the Jays 8-4.

Good for Alex. Let's go Yanks!

DEREK JETER FINALLY DIVING IN

New York Daily News reports that Derek Jeter will in fact finally get married to Hanna Davis.  Yup ladies... it's happening.

"The Captain will marry Sports Illustrated model Hannah Davis at a Napa Valley ceremony slated to take place during the hottest month of the year, according to a source close to the pair. We’re told that the nuptials will take place early in the month, possibly over the Fourth of July weekend — but not before a night of sports.

'There will be a croquet party on the Friday night,' says our insider. We’re also told that Davis is making plans to host a bachelorette party in Miami in early June. Jeter’s plans leading up to the big day remain unclear, though it’s likely to reunite him with Jorge Posada, who tapped the Captain to be his best man when he tied the knot in 2000. Jeter texted Posada that he’d popped the question when it happened."

Croquet? Really? I didn't see that one coming.

Love that Posada is involved in this news item and of course he's been a part of Jeter's life for a long, long time. I was always loved the relationship Jeet and Jorge have.  Let's not forget, Jeter was there when Posada needed to get back to Puerto Rico all those years ago when Jorge was searching for Laura Posada.

Obviously, he found her and the Posadas are one of BYB's favorite families ever.  Laura said this in out BYB post, THE FULL POSADA INTERVIEW:

"BYB: We have to know... How did you and Jorge meet?

Laura: We met when we were teenagers on a baseball field where he was the umpire for my softball game.  After the game ended, we both went our separate ways until we met again at a restaurant in Puerto Rico.  After a mutual friend introduced us, he remembered he had met me at the softball game and told his roommate I was the girl he wanted to marry."

Yup, Jeter was there, and now it's come full circle.  As Jorge said of Hannah and Derek:

"'I’m happy for him...She’s amazing. We love her. We look forward to that (wedding) day.'”

We're happy for him too.

Happy Thursday Folks.

THE SANCHEZ "THUMB CRACK"

I know, I have no idea what that means... but it sounds kind of bad.

The RailRiders front office tweeted out that Cashman revealed that catching prospect Gary Sanchez has a 'crack in his thumb.'
I assume this means a DL stint but who knows.  I was very confused by the "crack" thumb reveal.  Is it chapped? Is it broken? Fractured? What does it mean? I hit the Google to find out if anyone ever used that phrase before. One problem with that... if you go on any medical site, it would reveal that Sanchez could have anything from a hang nail to cancer.

Turns out he could have a 'cracked thumb' from thumb sucking.... I think he's passed that.  LoHud revealed that he was hit by a foul tip and that led to the cracked thumb, but what does that mean? Did the nail crack? Am I spending too much time on this bit? Obviously is a phrase to confuse us... or me.

Anyway, there you have it for now.  Sanchez has a thumb crack or something.  And now he'll most likely either sit and wrap it and play cautiously or he'll hit the DL and won't play for a bit.  Whatever the case, you hate to hear about our prospects getting hurt.  After all, many of us are rooting hard to see these guys come up to the Bronx.  For Sanchez, we're gonna have to wait and see.

NEVER. GIVE. UP.

It's hump day everyone, which means we are half way through the week and almost to the unofficial kick off of Summer 2016.  As I review the last couple of months of baseball, I can't help but keep these immortal words of Babe Ruth in my mind:

If we are going to be in it until the end, we have to stay focused on the prize.  To do this, we can never give up.  It is us who make it happen.  We feel the burn.  We put in the work.  We stay positive. We win.  We don't give up.

"After a horrendous start they (the Yankees) find themselves slowly climbing back into the thick of things in the AL East -- they are 5 1/2 games back of the Boston Red Sox and the Orioles, who are tied for the division lead, and 12 of their next 13 games are against AL East teams. As bad as things looked two weeks ago, it is possible that the entire deck could be reshuffled two weeks from now," reported ESPN on Sunday.  I like the sound of that reshuffling.  52 card pick up anyone?

Brian McCann said it best when he stated, "It's a long season." "That's the beauty of baseball. It's every day and six months.''  There is certainly a ton of baseball to be played over this period and remaining focused, positive, and healthy are the keys to staying in it until the last pitch, the last fly ball and the last out.  We certainly aren't where we want to eventually be by September but it sure feels good to be on the upswing of what felt like hell in late April.

To say we are back in the saddle again may be a bit too premature, but maybe we are out of the funk of being mediocre.  "It takes time. It takes courage, it takes discipline. We were able to put all of those things together. Day by day we felt like we were getting better," said Carlos Beltran of his team. Beltran himself has played well this season, batting .274 with 9 home runs over this first couple of months of baseball.

So what are our next steps?  We need to stay in it and believe we can forge ahead despite the challenges facing us on any given night.  Babe Ruth had it right.  It is hard to beat someone who never gives up.  And our Yankees are right where we need them to be at this point- right in the thick of things in the AL East.  Happy Hump Day!

NASTY NATE & .500

They did it, and it's about one game at a time, isn't it? .500 is a nice place to be, next we need to get passed it.

The Yankees won their 6th in a row last night and they appear to be rolling.

Nathan Eovaldi and the pen held the Blue Jays to just 2 hits and zero runs.  A truly wonderful spectacle that needed to happen.  In addition the 6 runs were led by Carlos Beltran who is just on a tear.  Here's how it all went down...

With the Yankees up 1 nothing in the 4th, Beltran homered knocking in 1 more. It was a solo shot.  Then, in the 7th, a ground-rule double by Austin Romine and another run scored. Right after that Jacoby Ellsbury singled in another run.

In the Bottom of the 8th, Chase Headley sacrificed home another run.  Then Didi Gregorius singled and knocked in Aaron Hicks.  And those are your 6.

It's wonderful to see this team coming together the way it has.  I'm the first to admit I wasn't too jazzed about this club, but I also didn't give up on them... let's just say I took a hiatus.  It was good for my heart.

Final: Yankees 6 - Blue Jays 0

THE YANKEES JUST SIGNED LAYNE SOMSEN

In a smart move, the Yankees just got younger again.

They just claimed righty pitcher and 26 year old Layne Somsen off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds.  According to Cincinnati.com, "Somsen, who made his big-league debut earlier this month and appeared in two games for the Reds‬, has been claimed off waivers by the Yankees‬.

Somsen pitched a scoreless inning in Philadelphia during his MLB debut in a 4-3 loss to the Phillies on May 14. He allowed five earned runs on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts and two home runs allowed in 1 1/3 innings in a 15-6 loss to the Indians on May 16."

And there you have it.  Everyone smile.

AROD REPORTS TO THUNDER & NOT THE BRONX!

Interesting move.

Alex Rodriguez was not removed from the DL to play with the New York Yankees today after all.  He was ordered to report to the Trenton Thunder to play a few games in what is being called a rehab assignment and then, after those few days, they will reevaluate him again.  Surprise!

NJ.com writes: "Most had expected A-Rod, who had a strained right hamstring, to join the club Tuesday in New York as it starts a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays. Why? Well because manager Joe Girardi said as much on Sunday:

'We could send him on a rehab and he might swing great down there, then come up and struggle here ... or maybe not swing well down there and come up and do great here. It's just really hard to predict, so we're not going to waste his at-bats in Triple-A.'"

At this point, what's a few more days.  Carlos Beltran can continue his tear, and you can ignore the piece we put out this morning titled WILL IT BE BELTRAN OR AROD? by Ike Dimitriadis until he actually DOES return to the Bronx.  All good.

And by the way... thanks for NOT ignoring Ike's story. Greatly appreciated!

WILL IT BE BELTRAN OR AROD?

On Tuesday night, Alex Rodriguez will come off the disabled list and return to the lineup as the everyday DH. Carlos Beltran, who has been the DH for most of the games in which Alex was out, will likely return to his position in right field. There was a day that Beltran was a Gold Glove caliber outfielder - he won three. But that day has long past, and you can see him struggle with his range when he chases down balls. It raises the question about whether or not right field is the best place for Carlos Beltran. Will the Yankees be forced to decide who will DH - Carlos or Alex?

Alex Rodriguez has not been an everyday fielder since 2013. Last year he took the field in six games - four at third base and two at second base. In total, it was less than 30 innings of work. The strategy behind that is obvious. It lowers the risk of injury and it keeps his energy focused on his hitting. This year, Alex has shown power (he is on pace to hit about 35 home runs and drive in about 80-90 RBI), though he is struggling with base hits (his average is .194). He will probably come around.

Carlos Beltran is having a great year himself. His 2016 slash line (.274/.299/.522) is right about where his career slash line is (.280/.354/.491). Here is the thing, though. Beltran performs much better when he is not in the field. Check it out:

G PA AB H TB R HR RBI BA OBP SLG OPS
as RF 27 108 102 25 40 11 4 9 .245 .278 .392 .670
as DH 13 56 52 18 42 11 5 17 .346 .357 .808 1.165

It makes the case to say that you want Beltran as the DH as often as possible. The problem, of course, is that you have two such players. Putting Alex out in the field has its own set of landmines. The fact is the Yankees need hitters who can put balls into orbit 30 or more times per season. When two of them have one natural spot in the lineup, that's where the manager and the hitting coach earn their salary.

Don't be surprised if you start to see a 3-way platoon between Rodriguez, Beltran, and either Aaron Hicks or Brett Gardner. Gardner continues to hit consistently at about .250, but Hicks has made a significant improvement. As of May 4, after a horrible start to the season, Hicks has been hitting .267 and been playing well in the field. It's an option to improve the hitting as well as the fielding. Another challenge in a challenging season, where every little bit helps.
