THE YANKEES DON'T, BUT YOUR HECKLING DOES

Here we go! The 2014 Major League Baseball season is off and running. The gray days of winter have finally called it quits after overstaying their welcome far too long. As we get reacquainted with our National Pastime, so many topics and story lines are swirling in my head. This campaign promises to be one to remember for sure…but where to start? AH! I’ve got it.

Heckling is as much a part of baseball as grabbing a hot dog and a beer after taking your sear the ballpark. Razzing the visiting team’s players is something we’ve all done at one time or another. Whether it be the basic “Boo” or a well placed zinger at the expense of a young man in a road grey uniform, giving the away club “The Business” is the home fan’s god given right…hell, it’s a time honored tradition! Heckling in the game of baseball is an art form.

However the tragic fact is the number of fans that can heckle in a clever and entertaining way is in drastic decline. We don’t like to play at the top of our intelligence anymore. Slowly the sharp, wise cracking “bleacher bums” from days long gone have given way to people who’d rather just bark classless obscenities. We are now a culture that sees value in bottom of the barrel entertainment…like watching the Jersey Shore or listening to the Bieber kid. It’s sad, folks.

The most overly used and unbelievably lame chant slash heckle proving my point is “YANKEES SUCK!” Ah yes, it’s the best they can come up with. From coast to coast, North to South, the Bronx Bombers are treated to the worst possible example of a once classic part of the home field advantage. I completely understand that other fans have a passionate “dislike” of the Yanks. It can be fueled be vengeance, jealously, rivalry…but when you dig down deep and come up with  “YANKEES SUCK!”…Well, it looks like you’re fueled by a DeVry diploma and tapioca pudding.

Yes, I’m a die-hard New York Yankee fan and don’t like hearing my club run down, but it’s more than that. I can say with all honesty that I’ve never joined in a “Boston Sucks!” chant. They clearly don’t. I wouldn’t even do that to the Cubbies and they clearly have. It’s just the worst. The Yanks might not be your cup of tea, but suck? Come on, you know better…oh, a Dodger fan?…well, no…maybe you don’t. But the rest of you have no excuse. Scrap this generic, waste of a heckle and go back to the drawing board. This chant isn’t even a first draft. Read up on your targets. Come up with a few ideas, bring them to the park and see if they catch on. Or just shoot from the hip and see what grabs the folks in your section. It can be done.

For example, in 2012 I caught the Yanks on the road. Although New York fans travel pretty well, I was pretty much alone in my section. The home team’s fans surrounding me were on me from the first pitch, but they were good-natured barbs and I was wearing pinstripes…I’m fair game. The Bombers took it on the chin and as the teams were leaving the dugouts a group behind me saw Derek Jeter getting ready to head to the clubhouse.

Their ringleader yelled out to The Captain and then they started chanting, “HERE’S YOUR BASKET! HERE’S YOUR BASKET!” They had done some thinking on how to zing the future Hall of Famer. Jeter had been in the papers because the word was he would give ladies he had “entertained” the night before a parting gift basket. This was a great heckle. I tipped my cap to them. Their club had won the game and they were sending Jeet off with a “Basket”. I left the stadium feeling down that my club had lost, but I had hope that the good old, witty and timely heckle was still alive out there.

I don’t want to make it sound like Yankee fans haven’t joined this “SUCKS!” epidemic. Younger fans, the new Stadium…the wave for god sake! It’s found it’s way to the Bronx and I am not having it. We were the crowd that made Pedro lose sleep hearing “WHO’S YOUR DADDY!” echoing in his dreams…or nightmares in this case. NO the Sox don’t suck…neither do the Rays, O’s…even the Jays are better than lousy. Yankee fans, don’t buy into it. Smarten up! I mean what’s next rally monkeys, beach balls and a pool out in center field (By the way, it’s a nice pool…just don’t see why it’s needed).

I’ll share one other story about the dangers of being a bargain basement heckler with a two cent head. I lived out West for a spell. I would go to see Dodgers’ games now and again. They have a good ballpark and Vin Scully so… Anyway, a friend of mine got us great seats one night. We sat right behind the visitor’s on deck circle.

The Reds were in town and I was happy to see coaches Bucky Dent and Chris Chambliss in their dugout. I was also excited to see Ken Griffey Jr. play. Just before his first at bat he stood on deck. A Dodger fan sitting a few seats from us yelled out to him, “Hey Junior! You suck!” Without pause Griffey looked over his shoulder at the guy and snapped off a “Beat it, geek.”

Our whole section (Dodger fans as well) went wild. This clown got crushed the way Junior took care of fastballs low and in. And the way he delivered his retort was priceless. It was as if he was speaking for every big leaguer who had to listen to uninspired, second grade, potty mouth fans. He was saying bring something that will sting or stay the hell home. I agree whole-heartedly Junior.

So here we go. Hope springs eternal. Every team has a chance this time of year…and every fan has a chance to refrain from the worst heckle in the history of sport and up their game. Because let’s face it, the New York Yankees don’t suck, but that chant certainly does.

"WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF DEREK JETER GOING TO THE INDIANS?"

I live in the Tri-state area. My staple in the morning is 1010 wins.  I think they do an incredible job and I was woken up by a great "caller" today and I laughed myself into the shower.

(In Photo: Derek Jeter thinking, "Seriously?")
The following video is of Bruce Drennan, a TV host who received a call from someone asking him whether or not he thought there was a chance of Derek Jeter going to the Indians. Drennan does sports for Cleveland.  I guess in this caller's head, Jeter is in the last season with the Yankees, and he'll be a free agent.  Logically, the Indians should get out there and sign him right? I mean, I guess that's what he's thinking.

Please watch this and please share it, Bruce Drennan cracks me up.

Great work by 1010 wins getting this today! And good job Drennan for sharing my thoughts... it was the dumbest question ever.

OH NO. NOT NUNEZ! SERIOUSLY?

In case you haven't heard....Eduardo Nunez was designated for assignment yesterday. It could mean his days in New York are numbered, and it could mean absolutely nothing. My magic ball skills have sucked for a long time now so I won't bet on how this plays out....but I have a gut feeling of why this happened and where it could end up ultimately.

(In Photo: Yangervis Solarte)
Designating Nunez for assignment essentially frees up a 40-man roster spot for Yangervis Solarte who we took notice of very quickly early on in spring training. He gave Nunez a run for his money and now he has a spot. The Yankees have 10 days to figure out what they are going to do with Nunez, they can trade him, pass him through waivers, or just flat out release him. Considering how there are very slim pickings right now in the middle infield market right now there are teams out there who could use the help. I wouldn't be surprised if some team out there decides to take a gamble.

Honestly though, I really think the Yankees just got tired of Nunez. Think about it, for the longest time we have been hearing that he is supposed to be the successor to short stop once Derek Jeter retires. Every single time I heard that I would bite my tongue. I have always hated that association. First of all, Jeter is my childhood icon. He is everything I associate a Yankee to be. Second of all, Nunez does not have the same skillset as Jeter, so that alone makes me cringe. Last but not least, we all know this is Jeter's last year. It's fact but I am still having a hard time coming to terms with reality.

Nunez has done many memorable things on the field, sometimes they haven't been so good. He can make things happen when he is running the bases, but if he is on defense the glove is a liability. I just think the Yankees got tired of being patient and waiting around. Otherwise, I don't know how else you can explain all of the other infielders that were invited in to Spring Training. Look at previous years, there weren't so many other guys like Solarte, Dean Anna and Scott Sizemore in the mix. After awhile, if there is no improvement you have to make a change, which is why I think the Yankees made this move.

Now, I hate to go back to this again BUT I am going to.....if there is ANY sort of potential trade here and if the Yankees can get something in return from Nunez I hope they do. I realize Nunez isn't going to bring in anyone spectacular but I hate to waste a player, especially when he has been in high demand in the past. I still think back to THIS rumor back in 2011 and think about what could be now. There are teams that need a middle infielder, and there isn't a lot of shopping to do out there.

So if the Yankees don't want him and can actually get something for him, they need to. Don't pull a Brandon Laird on me again. If you don't remember, read it in FIRST BRANDON LAIRD, NOW DAVID ADAMS.

PLEASE Yankees....don't do that to me again. Once was hard enough. So what will happen to Nunez? Only time will tell. If this is the end of the road for Nunez, I have to say thanks for all of the times you made me laugh when you would lose your helmet. I will always like to relive those memories. Of course, we will let you know as soon as anything happens. Stay tuned, it's about to get really interesting....

APRIL FOOLS!

You know, there's irony in tonight's game in Houston.  April 1st... the Yankees, who by far have the best looking lineup in baseball... and the Houston Astros, the team that no one is taking seriously these days.  Plus it's April Fools Day. Meanwhile, the Yanks got spanked.... in GAME 1 mind you, and suddenly people are actually tweeting that it's "going to be a long season" and "CC sucks."  I mean, are you kidding?

In the end, this game and it's loss means nothing. It's insignificant other than to suggest that the Astros showed up in their house... and the Yankees look like a bunch of very expensive players that don't gel well together.  But that's why you can't think about it.  And that's why it's ironic. It's a freak thing. It's April Fool's Day. Again... it's Game 1. The Yankees will be fine. No one should really care about this loss, as much as it sucks.

Look, there is no question the Yankees wanted to win tonight.  You know who feels the worst? CC Sabathia.  You know who feels bad for him? Me. This is a guy that's doing what's best for his health, and during the process, he needs to re-invent his pitching outing. He's learning a cutter. He's learning to deal with his velocity change. Sure, he did it to himself, but he was doing something important for himself and his family losing weight, and if these type of outings continue for CC, well, then we'll have a problem. But don't forget, CC never pitches well in April. Tonight was more of the same. Lord knows this guy is pissed at himself for this outing and mad that he literally handed his team the loss.

The Astros scored 6 in the first 2 innings.  CC gave up home runs. He had location problems. The Yankees looked sloppy in the field, bad throws like Mark Teixeira trying to throw home. Derek Jeter got hit by a pitch and in this day and age, why the hell is Brian McCann exposing his bare hand as a catcher? Who does that other than a Little Leaguer with little experience behind the plate? The point is, it almost seemed like a full moon tonight. It almost seemed like April Fool's Day. Oh yeah... that's because it was.

But who are the fools? Are they the Yankees, or the fans that have already given up?  Sure, I joined in the fun tonight on Twitter. I tweeted that the Yankees looked alittle off, but it's the first game of the season.  If you can't show humor on this day, you're way too high strung... you need a hobby. Try fishing.
The truth is if you can't laugh about it now, you can't laugh and that's what I was trying to suggest.  The Yankees will be fine... tonight was a chemistry thing.  You can collect top level talent all day long, but that top level talent needs to play together to win... and trust me, they will, but it didn't happen tonight. Sabathia was stale. Sabathia didn't look good and trust me... Sabathia will fix it.  He's a smart pitcher and he's a gamer. I've mingled with the man. I see the killer instinct. I believe in him, because he believes in himself. It's gonna be OK.

The highlights tonight? There were a few believe it or not.

First off Dellin Betances.  Mike O'Hara, one of our BYB writers, texted me: "Dellin in filthy. He could be a monster." You know what? He's right.

In the 8th, the Yankees were able to score 2 on hitting. Derek Jeter moved Jacoby Ellbury to third, and then Brian McCann knocked in Ellsbury.  Next, Tex got an RBI.  As our friend Delia wrote on Twitter:
I adore her and I was happy Tex did anything... bottom line.

Anyway...

Final tonight: Astros 6 - Yankees 2

Bottom line. No one died during this game. We come back tomorrow and win. That's what we always do... because we're the Yankees! We'll be fine. I believe that.

Oh yeah... and Go Yanks.

GOMES MADE IT ABOUT HIMSELF & NO ONE CARES BUT ME

I’m not a hater, but every year around this time there is some Red Sock comment or antic that annoys the crap out of me.  This year, it’s Jonny Gomes and his ridiculous American Flag blazer that he thought was a good idea to wear at the White House.  Now, I'm no tight ass and I sure as hell like to have a good time, but for some reason, this Red, White and Blue blazer thing, seems like a really stupid idea, especially in the world of World Championships, teams and unity. More on that in a minute...

Today's Gomes spectacle made me realize just how special the Yankees have been with their clean cut look, "suits after games and when they're traveling" attire. Bottom line, the Yankees always look their best. They also always look unified.  Like when they went to the White House after winning in 2009.

Now, it was clear to me that the Red Sox deserved to be at the White House today.  They won the championship in 2013.  They are the champions… for now, and they got their publicity just like we and other teams have done in the past. Good for them.  But here’s the thing; Who in their right mind shows up to the White House in an American Flag blazer?

And why, unless you want to make it about yourself, which is what Gomes was doing and which was probably why when they showed the shot of the President standing at the podium, Gomes was conveniently moved all the way left.

Look, it's my opinion that there are certain things you don’t do.  You don’t put your tongue on an ice cold pole in the winter.  You don’t tug on Superman’s cape, EVER. You also don’t upstage the President of the United States, your manager, your owner OR your teammates in a special moment like that. Gomes looked low class. Gomes looked “trailer park”. Jonny Gomes looked like an attention monger… and guess what… I’m the idiot writing about him, I fell for it... I'm giving him free publicity. Why? Because I just can’t believe he was so disrespectful today.

When I saw it unfolding, I tweeted this:
That about nailed it.

Again… I’m not a hater.  I mean, there are a few things in life that would make me happy. One is that the Red Sox would never ever win another championship. The second is that David Ortiz finally finds out why he tested positive to PEDs back in 2003.  I still want that answered.

The other is that dirtbags wake up and take a play from the Yankee handbook.  We don’t need beards and flashy clothes to stand out and overshadow our team of 25.  You should blend in with my teammates, because it’s not about You Jonny Gomes.  If I’m a member of the Yankees, or the Red Sox (God forbid)… it’s about my team.  Gomes is immature and needs to disappear.

You can take the man out of the trailer park, but you can’t take the trailer park out of the child.

Be a leader Gomes… not a loser.

#OPENINGDAY: STEP INTO FUN!

#OpeningDay! A popular hashtag this week on Twitter and a memorable thought in the mind of a baseball fan’s head.  What does it feel like to experience #OpeningDay?  From the stands of your favorite ballpark, from the app on your phone or from your very own living room?  I think it is personal and unique to everyone, but luckily, I have had some fans weigh in on their excitement already.

Earlier today I received a phone call from my student worker @KennyMac1985.  Here’s how the conversation went down, “Suzanne, my wife scored some tickets to the Orioles home opener.  Do you think…”  Before he could even utter the next word, I just excitedly said “Yes!” as if I was going myself.  You see baseball fans relish in other baseball fans getting to witness something special, no matter the game.  And #OpeningDay is something special.
What makes it special?  We do.  The ballparks do.  The food vendors do.  The media do.  The announcers do.  The players do.  It is a compilation of everyone and everything culminating into the start of a new season after a long winter.  I have had my share of #OpeningDay experiences in both Yankee and Shea Stadiums over the years.

I even attended #OpeningDay at the Trenton Thunder Arm and Hammer Park last year with my son.  Sure, we froze, but we had some dogs, some popcorn, and some fun.  And that’s what baseball is about- it is about fun or as I like to say: “Step into fun.”  Disney may have coined his fantasy land in California as the “Happiest place on earth,” but I say when you go to a game, you release yourself from the routines of the day, and “Step into fun.”  The fun of your childhood, the fun of the first time walking through the tunnel into the picturesque landscape of the field, the fun of the game, the thrill of a hit, the taste of your first dog and sip of your first brew- this is wrapped up into the fun of the game.  Baseball has all of the emotions wrapped up into a tightly decorated box, just sitting there, waiting for you to tear it open and go through the contents.  Each inning is another layer of wrapping paper, each hit, another prize leading to the ultimate prize, the win!

#OpeningDay for a rookie manager like Rick Renteria, new skipper for the Cubs, is a day of possibilities, even if the end result was losing in the 10th.   Newbies and legends take the field with anticipation and nostalgia.  To get to this place in an athlete’s life was a journey of obstacles.  But as he takes the field, it’s about the fun.  It’s about going for it.

Like Bryce Harper did on his slide into second which knocked off his helmet.

Like Derek Jeter going for just one more season to top off an amazing career.

Enjoy the beginning of a new season.  #OpeningDay only comes once a year.  Enjoy it just for the fun of it.

HOLY COW! GUESS WHAT HAPPENED TO ABREU NOW?

That rhymes.

It's been confirmed that Bobby Abreu has signed a minor league deal with the New York Mets.  Clearly the Mets saw something in Abreu and are willing to give him a shot.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com has Tweeted it below:
Well then. With that Mets team, it is very possible we could see Bobby Abreu get to the Bigs again! Good for him.

Just wanted to keep the #BYB family in the loop. Enjoy your Tuesday.

THE YANKEES MOUNT OLYMPUS: BABE RUTH

There is only one player who could ever occupy the top spot of ANY baseball list, let alone our Yankees Mount Olympus.

With credit to one of my all-time favorite movies “The Sandlot”, our top baseball immortal is known as: “The Sultan of Swat”, “The Colossus of Clout”, “The King of Crash” and “The Great Bambino”.

He is the one and only George Herman “Babe” Ruth.

As the nicknames indicate, Babe Ruth defined the long ball in baseball.  In spite of having played his last game in 1935, Ruth remains the MLB career leader in slugging percentage (.690) and OPS (on-base + slugging percentage).  For those that rely more heavily on statistics, he is also the career leader in WAR (wins above replacement) and sits in the top 10 (more often than not, the top five) in virtually every offensive category that the sport tracks.  In his 1921 season, Ruth set single season records for extra base hits – 119, runs – 177, and total bases – 457 that still stand today.

His accomplishments at the plate are long and show what a complete hitter Babe truly was.  He led the league in runs eight times, home runs 12 times, RBI five times, walks 11 times, and he never struck out (in 22 big league seasons) more than 93 times.  In spite of his size, Ruth was a speedy runner, swiping 10 or more bases five times in his career.

Until Roger Maris broke it, Ruth held the record of 60 home runs in a single season (in 1927) for 34 years, and his 714 career home runs were the most until Henry Aaron topped that mark in 1974.

What many may not know is that the Bambino began his career as an accomplished pitcher.  In 1916 he led the league with a 1.75 ERA while going 23 – 12.  His record as a pitcher is 94 – 46 and his career ERA sits at 2.28. In two World Series, Ruth went 3-0 with a microscopic 0.87 ERA.  In 1930, long after Ruth had made a name for himself as a hitter, he pitched a complete game, giving up just three runs and earning a win.  He was 35 years old.  It is safe to assume that if Babe had remained a pitcher, he’d have still been elected into the Hall of Fame.

If anyone ever says that someone other than Ruth is the greatest player who ever lived, be sure to mention the Babe’s accomplishments on the mound.

Ruth’s exploits off the field are well documented.  Where Lou Gehrig (his teammate in the heart of the Yankees’ lineup) was often reserved, the Babe was, well…the Babe.  Even though he never passed a drink or food that he didn’t like, Ruth loved kids and would do anything for them.  He often visited the children’s wards in hospitals, and famously promised a home run to one sick boy.

He delivered on his promise.

I could go on and on about the legend of Babe Ruth and all that he meant to baseball.  Needless to say, he became the childhood idol to many fans – including yours truly.  He was my very first hero and left quite an impression.  In 2012 I wrote about it for a now-defunct site.  You can read it here.

Ruth’s number 3 was retired by the Yankees in 1948 and his plaque proudly sits on a red granite block in Monument Park.  He was enshrined as part of the very first Hall of Fame class in 1936 – though he wasn’t a unanimous pick (really BBWAA?).

He was the face of the sport’s greatest teams that went 1405 – 895 (a .611 winning percentage) and won the first four (out of seven appearances) World Championships in franchise history.

In short, he made the Yankees what they are today and brought baseball to the forefront of American sports.

There never was any doubt as to who should occupy the top spot of the Yankees Mount Olympus, and he’d certainly also occupy the top spot of baseball’s Mount Olympus.

Presiding over our Yankee gods, we give you Babe Ruth.
