In true YankeeLand fashion, the conversation once again shifts to potential infield solutions for the New York Yankees. The latest name to enter the rumor mill? Former All-Star Paul DeJong, as noted by Jon Heyman of The New York Post.
With Jazz Chisholm offering versatility at both second and third base, the Yankees have the luxury of exploring various options as you have seen in many of our infield posts on Bleeding Yankee Blue.
DeJong began the 2024 season playing shortstop for the Chicago White Sox before finishing the final 37 games with the Kansas City Royals, manning third base. At 31, DeJong has predominantly played for the St. Louis Cardinals, the team that drafted him in the fourth round of the 2015 draft. He quickly climbed through the minor league ranks, making his MLB debut in 2017.
A 2019 All-Star and the 2017 Rookie of the Year runner-up, DeJong posted a .227 batting average, 24 home runs, and 56 RBIs last season. His solid defensive skills could make him a fitting addition to the Yankees' infield.
That said, a move for an infielder might not be necessary. Jazz Chisholm Jr. seems poised to become a regular at second base, which would leave third base to a rotation of DJ LeMahieu, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Oswald Peraza.
Whether or not DeJong joins the mix, it's safe to say the Yankees have plenty of intriguing options.
