"Derek Jeter has gone through rough stretches before, but he has never
been approaching 40 and coming off a fractured left ankle and multiple
related leg injuries that limited him to 17 games a year ago.
Despite all that and the fact he has just one hit in his last 30
at-bats since collecting four in two games on March 6 and 7, the Yankees
are confident he’s going to snap out of it."
That's the opening of Dan Martin's New York Post piece titled Girardi, scouts say Jeter’s spring struggles don’t concern.
I say this respectfully because I like Dan Martin... "Blah, Blah, Blah". Cue the music... and play it in the background as you read the rest of this:
This is something called 300 Violin Orchestra by Jorge Quintero. It gets me pumped, and I envision a highlight video of Derek Jeter the past 18 + years making highlight after highlight to this.
Truth be told, Jeter will be fine. It won't matter is he has 30 hits or 130 this season, the main theme of Derek Jeter this season is that he's there, he's present and he's in his final season in pinstripes. Sure, to Jeter, the only thing on his mind is winning the whole damn thing as a team, and I get that, but Derek Jeter is older. We need to understand that and we do. It happens in life.
My buddy did his fantasy draft this past weekend and told me that Jeter was still there in the 23rd round, so he snatched him up. "I wouldn't have waited that long", I said. "Why?" He asked. "Because it's Derek Jeter." He nodded. He got it, but at the same time, Jeter is older, he's got a cracked ankle, but don't tell Jeter that, because much like he's done year after year, he becomes a dominating force on the field. He'll lead his guys and once he gets going, say around April 20th, he'll be back for good. I feel that for sure.
2 things are happening right now; Jeter's trying to catch up to where he should be after only playing 17 games last season, and he's testing his ankle and believe it or not, he's being cautious whether he tells you he's 100% headed or not. Remember, it wasn't the ankle that wasn't healed. The ankle, according to his own press conference was good. It was his legs that weren't strong enough last season. In other words, he had alot of work to do over the winter and spring, and now, he's getting there finally
So yeah, we're all "concerned" about Jeet, but we shouldn't be. He's our Captain, our leader, our representative in pinstripes that lets us know that everything's gonna be OK. This is why I don't report on Spring Training ladies and gentlemen... because there are just a bunch of stories out there and nothing of substance.
When the games start, Jeter will start. Right now it's just the Captain feeling his way toward the show. All will be well. How do I know? Well... it's Derek Jeter... that's why.
