WHAT I MISS MOST THIS OCTOBER? THE YANKEES...
I felt that pang in my heart tonight as the great Mariano Rivera trotted onto the field at Fenway Park last night. But he was not trotting out to close a game against the Sox wearing #42 across his back. Instead he wore a blue suit and tie and accepted a prestigious award surrounded by 40,000 plus Fenway faithfuls.
As much as I felt proud and happy for Mariano, I couldn’t help but feel bad for myself and millions of other Yankee fans across the globe who are feeling a little empty right now as our least favorite team represents the AL in the World Series.
“It’s a really sad feeling,” said second baseman Robinson Cano, who is headed for free agency. “The fun part of this game is playoffs. I’m really sad right now, and it’s going to stick in my head, in my mind, until next season,” according to a report by CBS New York at the end of the season. Even Mo lamented on the abrupt close of the season for the Yankees this year. “I’m not used to pitching for something that doesn’t mean anything.” Let’s face it- it’s not normal for the Yankees to go away quietly at the end of September. Usually we have the Captain rallying up the troops for the first game of the ALDS, which usually the Yankees sail straight through to the ALCS. We have made the postseason every year from 1995 to 2012, except for 2008. That’s a long time so, no wonder I feel that void in the pit of my stomach.
The other day I posted this quote, which essentially sums up my emotions this week.
Yep that about says it all. I digress- I have been blaming my frustrations on the BEARDS of BOSTON, and although they are disgusting and I can’t stand to look at Mike Napoli and the rest of the bums, really, and truly I hate losing and I hate not being in the post season.
That is the true root of my frustrations.
So as the Sox continue to beat up on the Cards and the unseasonably warm weather dips into the cool fall temperatures, I close my eyes and dream of spring and our Yankees warming up for a bright 2014 season. With the right moves, and the right combination of pitching and hitting, we can get there next year. Otherwise, I fear the 1980s and early 1990s era will rear their ugly heads and I will be sitting here on my couch wishing for 2015. Since I am the eternal optimist, I vote for the former and the right chemistry of talent will make their way to New York for the start of the 2014 season.
