The Yankees have been aggressively shopping Joba Chamberlain, and Phil Hughes in a package deal to a National league team. Despite their struggles, the 27 year-olds can be valuable come the trade deadline. The question is, just how realistic is a trade?
Hughes has a 4.42 career ERA, with a 56 - 45 record. Joba has a 5.40 ERA in over 23 plus innings pitched this season. They both become free agents at the end of this season, so it wouldn't be a long term acquisition. But, if the Yankees approached the right teams, under the right circumstances, they may be able to get a little something out of it.
While Joba, and Hughes could be incredible assets to NL West teams, the problem seems to be that the Yankees asking price is too high. The Dodgers aren't looking for starting pitching at the moment, and the Giants, and the Padres are likely out of the running, and won't be interested in either of them. So what now?
The Braves, and Phillies have shown interest in Joba, but what about Hughes? Do the Yankees tough it out for the rest of the season, and cut their losses at the end?
Right now, unless the Yankees can find an NL team that is still in contention, with a need for pitchers, that may very well be the case. The best option for the Yankees would have been to trade Joba, and Hughes during the All-Star break, but that time has come and gone. With the trade deadline quickly approaching, it is becoming less, and less likely that they will be parting ways.
