Kuroda looked lost last night. He gave up 3 home runs, a total of 8 hits and 7 earned runs. Sure, he struck out 3 but those earned runs and home runs killed this guy. Not to mention the Yankees did absolutely nothing offensively...nothing. 3 hits the entire game and only 1 an extra base hit...and that was a double by Robinson Cano.
The Blue Jays are a good team, but Kuroda made it seem like the Blue Jays are superstars...they are not, so today, we have 1 important thing to do...win.
This outing for Kuroda stung like hell and believe me, it's clear the state of the Yankees pitching is in disarray. Sure, CC Sabathia lost a few nights ago and that was surprise, but let's call it was it is...this is a Yankee team that may have all the bells and whistles in a top notch rotation, but when you really peel away the layers, it just turns into a smaller and smaller onion...that stinks! Bottom line, we need to turn it around.
Look, I don't expect CC Sabathia to suck his next outing. Everyone is entitled to a bad outing once in a while and CC is not that guy. But Hiroki Kuroda can only be a nice compliment to CC if Hiroki Kuroda can pitch better than what he's done this season. I don't like the extremes...I don't like him either getting his tits lit up, or pitching a stellar outing. He's too all over the map and I'm not feeling it. The New York Times had a nice little writeup and clearly they get it. They say: "When the Yankees signed Hiroki Kuroda to a one-year contract in January, it was noted that he excelled in the National League West, where the parks are big and the many of the hitters are not. But in the American League, particularly the A.L. East, conditions are far different, and it was expected that it would be far more treacherous for Kuroda to navigate." Read the full piece by David Waldstein HERE. I'm beginning to wonder what the hell Cashman was thinking about when they signed Kuroda. Oh that's right, I didn't have faith in him before the Yankees signed him. Read WHY KURODA'S THE YANKEES WILD CARD.
And look at someone like Phil Hughes. Sure, he pitched his heart out in his last outing, but can that continue or was it a fluke? Sure, the Yankees want him to be the Hughes they have been longing for for years, but it's just never really worked out that way. I pray Hughes continues to have nice outings like he did in his last one, but, let's be honest...one needs to wonder if we're running out of time with Phil Hughes.
The Freddy Garcia experiment was a disaster and you need to feel for Garcia. His starting role this season was stinky and he pitched himself out of a job in the rotation. Sure, he just pitched in a relief role and handled it well the other night against the Orioles, but once again, it's another Yankee starter that couldn't do what they anticipated he could do.
Poor Ivan Nova has a sprained ankle and he's been great so far this season, but this ankle sprain is just the type of luck the Yankees have been having. If the Yankees can keep Nova healthy, he will match up nicely with CC as 2 of the most dominant pitchers in baseball. That's great, but having just 2 dominant pitchers does not a championship make. We need more...and that's where Pettitte comes in.
If Andy Pettitte, a late addition this season can be vintage Andy, the New York Yankees have a shot. There is no question Pettitte is the key to this whole thing. With 3 dominant pitchers, you can do a lot. You can sweep a series from an American League rival. You can win a round of the playoffs, and you can sit back and smile win after win. Andy is the key, believe me.
Yes, the Yankees have pitching problems...you can sit there and tell me that I'm wrong and I'll show you the scorecard. Kuroda allowing 7 earned runs...that can't cut it in Yankeeland, believe me. It's time to think about what we have pitching wise and maybe, just maybe we can make a few moves to start the momentum rolling our way. After all, pitching wins championships and we don't exactly have that yet.
