It's official, Zach Britton has called it a career. The Athletic has this:
"Zack Britton is officially retiring from baseball after a 12-year big-league career, the 35-year-old pitcher told The Athletic in an exclusive interview earlier this month.... The left-hander finishes his career with 154 career saves, a 35-26 record and 3.13 ERA in 442 games (641 innings) "Monday, November 20, 2023
PHILLIES LOCK UP NOLA BEFORE CASHMAN EVEN GETS OUT OF HIS SLEEPING BAG
More of the same from the New York Yankees. NoT aggressive... not serious about changing this team for the better. Whatever.
About 48 hours after we wrote EXPECT THE YANKEES TO BE "IN" ON THIS BIG PHILLIES STUD here at BYB, Aaron Nola was signed for a big-time contract by the Philadelphia Phillies. In other words, the rumors of the Yankees being "in" on Nola we just rumors and proves to me that baseball insiders like Jon Morosi of the MLB Network actually know NOTHING about the inside track of baseball and the players that play it. What a joke.
But more to that, once again, a big fish is out there... someone we desperately need, and the Yankees don't make a deal to try and score Nola. They don't even try. Probably because Brian Cashman was sleeping in Manhattan to "combat homelessness" (whatever that means) instead of actually doing his job. Anyway... the New York Post writes:
"Aaron Nola and the Phillies are in agreement on a seven-year, $172 million contract, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed on Sunday, setting him up to spend the rest of his career in Philadelphia. The deal is pending a physical, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, who reported that it’s the biggest deal for a Phillies pitcher in franchise history."

CASHMAN HAS NO CHOICE, HE HAS TO DO BETTER
Frankie Montas. Joey Gallo. Carlos Rodon. Just 3 names that make you want to pull your hair out. Cashman made those moves, and those players did nothing for us. The worst in my estimation has to be Montas who went through a physical and was still hurt because he was apparently hiding and injury. But that comes down to his integrity and the medical staff's lack of awareness when it comes to the human body. But all of them were greenlit by Cashman who is walking around high and mighty over his Yankee career with literally nothing to show for it. In fact 4 guys he gave up were champs with the Rangers. 4 guys... Chapman, Montgomery, Heaney and Eovaldi. How in the world is this guy wrong all the time?
The Yanks needs to do something bigly for the 2024 season. Something that would resemble the 2009 season when George made him go out and get Swisher, Teixeira, Sabathia and Burnett. But what? Is it Juan Soto and Cody Bellinger? No one really knows. But Clutchpoints has this:
"Cashman asserted the Yankees would be in the conversation to pursue a host of players:“We’re knocking on those doors, we’re having those conservations. Hal Steinbrenner and his family have always run it the way that if there’s some opportunity worth pushing on, they’re always there to allow that to happen,” the Yankees GM said, per Bryan Hoch."

EXPECT THE YANKEES TO BE "IN" ON THIS BIG PHILLIES STUD
If New York could somehow land both Yamamoto and Nola, it immediately would have one of the best starting rotations in baseball on paper. "
"HE WILL NOT SURVIVE" SAYS WASHED UP DAVID SAMSON OF BRIAN CASHMAN
David Samson was never successful running a baseball team. He and Jeffrey Loria were Marlins owners and really didn't amount to anything when they were in charge. Samson's a loudmouth, egomaniac and kind of annoying. He's also good for a soundbite. By the way... he's still a prick.
Today he spoke on Dan Le Batard's show and spoke of Brian Cashman and said he's done.
Now look, if I have both Cashman in a room with Samson and I was asked to pick who I want on my team as the GM? It's Cashman, merely for the fact that David Samson is a squirmy turd, but there's no question Cashman stepped out of turn with his recent remarks against Stanton. But will he apologize? No. Hell, Cash didn't even apologize for the crappy season of misfits he assembled."He's done. (Yankees GM Brian Cashman) is done. You don't survive that...this is the beginning of the end." – @DavidPSamson says Cashman's recent critical comments of Giancarlo Stanton will eventually get him fired this year if the Yankees don't perform well.

COLE IS A WELL-DESERVED WINNER SURROUNDED BY A BROKEN-DOWN YANKEE CLUB
No big surprise here... Gerrit Cole was a very good pitcher in 2023 and so, he was able to secure the highest honor for a pitcher... the Cy Young. How freaking great is that!
The New York Post writes:
"The Yankees’ ace unanimously captured the American League Cy Young award on Wednesday night, the first of his career after a season in which he was dominant from start to finish...“It’s just such an historical franchise with such historical players,” Cole said on a conference call Wednesday night. “It’s just a bit surreal to be regarded with, for example, the other five Cy Young award winners we’ve had over the years. We’ve had great pitchers in and out of this place, great players, leaders on and off the field. People that set a really high example and a really high bar of what it means to be a great Yankee. That served as an inspiration to me as a kid and obviously … served as an inspiration and the standard to shoot for.
“So, it makes me tremendously proud that I’m holding up my end of the bargain in terms of those great players and those great legacies. I’m contributing to the overall brand of what we do in New York.”
YANKEE DRAMA COULD SIGNAL JAPANESE SENSATION TO LOOK ELSEWHERE
Casey said it simply yesterday in CASHMAN JUST ALIENATED EVERY FREE AGENT PLAYER!...
"...you think Cashman and the Yankees have a shot with Cody Bellinger now? How about Yoshinobu Yamamoto?""One of the biggest free agents on the market this offseason is Japanese sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The star pitcher is expected to be posted from his team in Japan soon and then can begin negotiating with MLB clubs," reported FanSided. But what's interesting here is that Joel Wolfe, who happens to be Stanton's agent is also representing Yamamoto. Nice move, Brian. Way to poison the opportunity to go for the 25-year-old pitcher who is only going to talk to big market teams like Chicago, New York and Los Angeles.
As quoted by The Athletic, Joel Wolfe responded to Cashman's quote about Stanton's likeliness of getting injured again with this statement" “I read the context of the entire interview. I think it’s a good reminder for all free agents considering signing in New York both foreign and domestic that to play for that team you’ve got to be made of Teflon, both mentally and physically because you can never let your guard down even in the offseason.”
Look we all know that the weight of wearing pinstripes is heavy. But the reality is, it is a choice to come play here in New York if you are a free agent looking to make some money and be a part of what used to be vintage franchise. But lately, honestly, the Yankee are like a set of antique silverware that need to be polished. And with the ability to use some of the other kinds of cutlery out there, including disposable, who needs to be bothered with investing in the time and effort in polishing what is seemingly relics.
Here's an interesting perspective by ESPN's Jake Asman, "Were Cashman's comments about Stanton calculated to try and get Stanton to waive his no trade clause if Yankees found a team to take him (they would have to eat some of the money) or am I giving Cashman too much credit and he's just completely lashing out again?"
I can't begin to rant enough about the Yankees on the field, but this off the field nonsense is really just extra. Admit your mistakes. Don't blame players. Don't blame fans and the media. Blame yourself. Because the problem exists within the organization, and it begins with the front office. Brian Cashman is irrelevant. And his tactics are making the Yankees appear obsolete. And now with this new nonsense, the Dodgers will likely be on the winning side of the Yamamoto signing, while the Yankees just keep running in the hamster wheel, with nowhere else to go.

CASHMAN JUST ALIENATED EVERY FREE AGENT PLAYER!
Moron said what?
Cashman was just called out by Giancarlo Stanton's agent. Maybe Brian Cashman should stop sounding so freaking desperate, stop trying to deflect the fact that he was terrible at his job last year and instead just keep his big fat trap shut and fix the New York Yankees. Like that is literally his ONLY JOB.... to fix the Yankees. Instead, he is alienating every free agent out there.
You gotta give credit to Stanton's agent Joel Wolfe. He went after Cashman... and further tainted the Yankees organization.
In other words, you gotta be perfect as a player in the Bronx or you will be judged, ridiculed and embarrassed in front of the fan base and the New York Press. Cashman should have never come out and said anything negative about Stanton, injury prone or not... we all know it... don't be an authority figure of the New York Yankees and SAY IT. You end up with egg on your face.Giancarlo Stanton’s agent, Joel Wolfe, responds below to Yankees GM Brian Cashman saying of Stanton, “He’s going to wind up getting hurt again more likely than not because it seems to be part of his game.” pic.twitter.com/gZHlqy4cfY

By the way, you think Cashman and the Yankees have a shot with Cody Bellinger now? How about Yoshinobu Yamamoto?
CASHMAN THROWS STANTON UNDER THE BUS, BUT FAULT LIES ON CASHMAN
Giancarlo Stanton is injury prone. No doubt about it... everybody knows this. But when the Yankees brought him to New York December 11, 2017, Cashman played this move up as the greatest upgrade to the Yankees since Reggie came to the Bronx. At the time of the Stanton signing, many touted Cashman as a genius. Cashman touted himself as one for sure. Even some of us at BYB praised the move. But here's the thing... we all knew he was injury prone.
Here's the thing though, I find it incredibly unprofessional that the same General Manager that signed the guy is now slamming him to the media all these years later. That's right... Cashman and his loose lips strike again. No filter, just speaking his mind... kind of like an idiot. And my point is this; How does everyone in the room know that Stanton is injury prone, you throw the guy under the bus and don't surround Stanton with depth as the fix? Seems like a Cashman problem... not a Stanton problem.
CBS Sports writes that Cashman said this of Stanton:
"He's going to wind up getting hurt again more likely than not because it seems to be part of his game?"Monday, November 13, 2023
REGGIE JACKSON CONTINUES TO RIP THE YANKEES!
Look, the Yankees didn't need a "deep dive" ordered by Hal Steinbrenner to see it. There's a massive disconnect between the people who call the shots and those who actually play or used to play the game. Instead, analytics from yahoos influence everything....and has broken the whole thing.
Two things stuck out to me over the weekend, one Aaron Judge's meeting with Hal and Brian Cashman. We all know Judge is right, the Yankees place value in the wrong data. Their obsession with launch angle is fruitless and insane, meanwhile Judge told Cashman the Yankees need to value batting average and RBI's. Let's add basic baseball fundamentals into that and by golly, I think the captain may be on to something!
What Judge values is what the Yankees should value because they contribute to scoring runs, which helps win baseball games! Of course, that is paired with good fundamentals like knowing how to bunt and running effectively on the bases. It sounds so basic, but he isn't wrong. Too bad I have zero faith that Yankee brass will actually listen to what Judge has to say and make the changes. After all, the Yankees goonies know better, right? (Sarcasm). The Yankees have a history of not listening to the right people.
But Judge isn't the only one who is pointing out what hasn't worked. Have you seen what Reggie Jackson had to say? Read it HERE. If this doesn't put a bad culture problem on display, nothing will. Reggie doesn't hold anything back. His Amazon Prime documentary that was released back in March, said the team made him feel like "a hood ornament" back in his playing days. Note he said that before the Yankees had their epic failure of a season. So, this wasn't Reggie shining more light on a bad season.
But seriously, Reggie is talking A LOT, lately. NJ.com also released THIS last month. It's pretty shocking to hear him say "opinions really don't get valued" within the organization considering he was so respected as a great Yankee. Pair that with his tweet from Sunday morning and it just adds more fuel to the fire.
Reggie's X post about Rob Thomson hits home for me. I was a big fan of Thomson during his bench coach days with us. I really liked him, and I did want him to be the new Yankee manager after Joe Girardi was fired. I get why he wasn't given the opportunity, because the Yankees wanted to go an entirely new direction and now in retrospect, we see that we got Aaron Boone, I hate that he is gone now even more!

CASHMAN: WE ARE GOING TO BE A PHOENIX RISING OUT OF THE ASHES IN '24.
I have never laughed so hard in my life. Well, maybe once. But it was for a good reason and certainly not at the silly little one-liners Brian Cashman is dishing out in Arizona this week to the media. Now, Casey gave a great overview on what has been said by both Cashman and baby boy Hal Steinbrenner in his piece THE NEW YORK SPANKEES. I want to focus on one of the final soundbites that Cashman spooled out this week, “This winter, we go back at the wheel and it’s now about ’24,” Cashman added. “We look to be a phoenix rising out of the ashes to find a way," reported The New York Post. Yeah. Let's pause that for a moment and unpack.
Does Brian Cashman actually think that the Yankees are going to rise out of the ashes to find a way to a pennant? That's like me saying, I am going to a sub four-hour marathon without making any changes to my running discipline, training and work sessions. If the Yankees want to bring change, then they actually need to back that up, not skate the questions of how with nonsense like rising from the ashes. This is not Harry Potter for God's sake.
“I know people want change just for change’s sake,” Cashman said. “I remember seeing great people walk in and out of this place like Pat Gillick before I got here, a Dick Howser or Lou Piniella, all these guys, because of impatience or we’re not tolerating the ebbs and flow of what the game brings sometimes," reported The Post. I'm sorry, has the last 14 years been just ebbs and flow? These are years we simply won't get back. And the fact that they don't realize this and are staying the course is just making us look foolish.
Cashman has no answers except to say that we need to win more ball games. How Brian? How do you propose the Yankees do that? What is the plan? What is timeline? What are the milestones and expectations? Throwing out silly cinematic lines, similar to the puppet they have in the dugout game after game, just isn't going to be tolerated anymore. I think the Kool Aid tank is empty. No one is buying this. I can't imagine the players are.
What I hope is that the players take more matters into their own hands. Almost managing themselves and pushing back. Back in the day, we had player managers in baseball. Maybe it is time for that again. Because right now, the narrative isn't being written by the players. It is being written by public relations puppeteers and the last straw is the phoenix analogy.
If I was a free agent, I wouldn't want to come to the Yankees to play. They no longer hold the status they once did. I would rather go play for a manager and organization that backs up their claims to win. Like the Chicago Cubs and their new manager Craig Counsell, or Ron Washington at the Anaheim Angels. Of course, there are the clubs that actually made it to the ALCS and NLCS, and their leadership (minus Houston of course). They are the teams to watch. Backed by leadership, unafraid of change, willing to accept and use their mistakes as opportunities.
So, until Cashman and his clowns consider some wise words by a franchise herself, Taylor Swift "It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me. At tea time, everybody agrees. I'll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror. It must be exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero," they will go nowhere but right where they are now. Yea, I can be cute and creative too, Cashman. Stop treating us like fools.

THE NEW YORK SPANKEES
Hal Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman embarrassed themselves and the entire organization this past week. A lot of talk and lip flap to the press... but literally offered nothing about how they are going to change this Yankee team. In fact, Brian Cashman was on his heels the entire time he spoke to the press... totally defensive... gaslighting the Yankee fans that pay thousands and thousands of dollars a year on this team, the tickets, the overpriced food, the merchandise.
In the end, what did we learn? Well, it was more of the same. There are "big changes" coming... but when you listen to them, there is ZERO SUBSTANCE. It's like kicking a can down the road. Sooner or later all you have is a can on the other end of the street, but it's battered and broken down and dented... and nothing else.
That will be the New York Yankees as we start spring training in 2024. There is panic among the top executives in the front office of Yankee stadium. And I will say this again... Despite what Cashman says about utilizing analytics way too much in 2023, it doesn't take more than the eye test to know that that is EXACTLY what the Yankees were doing. There were no gut moves... there was no managing with the eyes... there was none of that, and if there was, Boone is DEFINITELY not qualified to manage.
I am quickly noticing that Brian Cashman doesn't have a baseball mind at all. Brian Cashman's big ideas are quick fixes on guesses when it comes to wrangling players. His trades have been disastrous. His signings have been flops. The other day he mentioned to the press that the Yankees had the largest Scouting department in the MLB. Well, it doesn't show Cashman. You clearly have hired to wrong people.
The Athletic demolished Hal and Cashman almost as bad as BYB does on the daily. Check this out:
"Steinbrenner said in no uncertain terms that changes were coming to the Yankees. When pressed on multiple occasions to provide some clarity, Steinbrenner dodged questions by citing private (meetings)...Steinbrenner said. “These were private meetings, and they need to stay that way, or else we’re going to have a more difficult time getting things done.”
Steinbrenner was mostly vague about the potential different processes and personnel changes fans can expect in 2024.
“There’s going to be some big changes,” Steinbrenner said. “There’s going to be changes some people might not consider significant, but (Aaron) Judge and I may because we’re doing this every day.”
The most bizarre moment of Steinbrenner’s media availability came when he said the team discussed the importance of bunting back in August. Steinbrenner said manager Aaron Boone raised the point that he believes the team has not taught young players coming up through the minors to bunt enough."
“Believe me,” the owner said, “we’ve looked at it and looked at it and there doesn’t seem to be a smoking gun at all. I’m very comfortable with our training staff and very comfortable with our strength and conditioning staff.”
Steinbrenner added that players “really have respect for” the staff."
