RICE GETTING OPPORTUNITY BUT CAN HE SEIZE ON IT?

Ben Rice quickly became a fan favorite during his time with the Yankees last season, and there’s a good chance we’ll see him back in the Bronx if he delivers a strong performance this spring. If Cody Bellinger is in the outfield and can't play first one day, Rice could find himself backing up Paul Goldschmidt at first. But now, another possibility is emerging—Rice could also serve as a backup catcher behind Austin Wells.

If you asked Rice about his role, he'd likely have a simple answer: "I'll play wherever you need me." That’s the mindset of a young, hungry player eager to contribute, and it’s exactly what makes him so valuable.

According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Rice took reps with the Yankees' catching group on Wednesday, with the coaching staff confirming that he’s in the mix as a backup behind the plate. While Rice spent most of his minor league career as a catcher, he transitioned to first base upon making his MLB debut last summer. In 50 big-league appearances, he played 49 games at first base. During that stretch, the 25-year-old hit .171 with seven home runs. However, his Triple-A numbers told a different story—he slashed an impressive .294/.428/.661 with 12 homers in just 30 games.

A former Dartmouth standout, Rice was selected by the Yankees in the 12th round of the 2021 MLB Draft. The organization has always been high on his potential, and it’s clear they intend to utilize him wherever he’s needed.

As Spring Training unfolds, all eyes will be on how Rice handles the defensive versatility expected of him. His ability to contribute at multiple positions could be a huge asset for the Yankees.

Personally, I can’t wait to see how he performs—there’s something special about his energy and drive that makes him exciting to watch.
