THE YANKEES MAY BE GETTING SERVED!
Remember when Randy Levine made a comment about Mike Trout and contracts and there was an insinuation that if he was available on the Free Agent market, that, yes, the Yankees would of course go for it? It was right around the time Robinson Cano flew the coop. Well, the Yanks are most likely going to be punished because of it.
According to the Los Angeles Times, "Selig is considering whether to fine the New York Yankees for tampering, the result of an investigation triggered by Yankees President Randy Levine’s comment last winter that he would offer Angels outfielder Mike Trout a 10-year contract.
The potential fine was disclosed by two people with knowledge of the matter but not authorized to comment about it. The amount of the possible fine was not disclosed.
The Angels were furious Levine dropped Trout’s name into a December interview about why the Yankees declined to match the 10-year contract the Seattle Mariners offered to 31-year-old second baseman Robinson Cano.
'If it was Mike Trout, I’d offer him a 10-year contract,' Levine told reporters in New York. 'But for people over 30, I don’t believe it makes sense.'”
Now look. Was it a stupid thing to say publicly? Yes. Could Randy have said it and NOT said Trout's name? That would have been smarter. Now, when it went down, I saw it as no big deal, but the Angels are pissed. Not to mention, if someone did that to our club, I would be just as pissed as a fan! The next thing you know that player is out having dinner with a brass exec, and then signs a monster contract...then, POOF... gone.
We'll keep you in the loop on this story. It's very interesting. And for the record... I'd love Trout in pinstripes. Did I say that out loud?
