MELKY CABRERA'S STRATEGIC IMPLOSION

According to the Daily News, the MLB has found that Melky Cabrera attempted to create a fake website for a fake product in order to avoid his suspension.  The idea was to make it seem as if Melky purchased and unknowingly consumed a product that would cause him to test positive for PEDs. Read HERE. If he were successful in convincing them of this, it's possible he could have had his 50 game suspension overturned. It was strategic... therefore, it's a true fall from grace.

Jeff Novitzy, criminal investigative agent for the Food and Drug Administration, was brought in to investigate Cabrera’s associates. Novitzy is the agent who investigated Barry Bonds, Kirk Radmonski and Lance Armstrong to name a few. According to reports Juan Nunez, who was hired as by Sam and Seth Levinson, Cabrera’s agents, to aid them in the handling of their Dominican clients, was responsible for the plan. Cabrera’s agents have said that he is not a salaried employee of their agency.

It sounds like something out of a made for TV movie, doesn’t it? An athlete with true talent cheats, gets caught and then tried some hair-brained scheme to get out of trouble. One thing that Melky's never been accused was smart...this confirms it. I swear, I'm almost waiting for a television crew to jump out and yell, “You’re on Candid Camera!”
I may seem a bit snarky about all of this but can you really blame me? I really liked Melky. He was a good ballplayer. And I use the past tense because I can’t help but feel like my respect for him is gone at this point.

The more I read or hear about this case the more disappointed in him I become. What possible reason could he, or anyone who plays professional sports, give for cheating? There is none. We here at BYB are mad disappointed. Read AM I MISSING SOMETHING WITH THE MELKY STORY? Taking PEDs is not a mistake. It is a choice that athletes knowingly make. They decide to take the shortcut while others actually have to work to be great. But to make matters worse, instead of accepting what he did and taking his punishment, he made an attempt to cover it up. Really, Melky? Really.

Melky had a very bright future ahead of him. Now it will forever be plagued by question marks and doubt. It’s sad really. Another great athlete who made a terrible decision...what a damn shame.
