Eduardo Nunez: You either love him or you have him. Me? I like Nuney but I think he is probably the worst defender I have ever seen since God knows when. He has a solid bat, I love his speed, but Nuney is killing me with his glove. I have suggested often that the Yankees need to make this guy a permanent outfielder (WHY NOT MAKE NUNEZ AN OUTFIELDER?) and by that I mean, keep him down in Scranton all season, keep allowing him to get at bats and get on base to run, but his permanent position should be left field. Train him there and bring him up next year. If "it took" as my buddy Nathaniel would say, then he's your backup and eventually a trading chip. If not, you either send him down for more work, or you get rid of him. I have not been too attached to Nunez. Personally, I bet he's quite a teammate and a nice guy, but I just don't care for the defense. Now, George King III has the latest about Eduardo Nunez HERE. He writes: "Eduardo Nunez, who is on the Triple-A disabled list with a thumb problem, visited with Girardi.
'He just started taking batting practice,' Girardi said of the utility player who was optioned to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in mid-May. 'He hopes to play in a couple of weeks or so.'
Now in fairness, this thumb injury Nunez has has been since May. What the hell is going on there? We shall see I guess, but I have to say, it appears this season for Nunez will most likely be a bust.
Joba Chamberlain: Joba will be pitching in a minor league game next week. Wow. Newsday has that story HERE. According to Mark Didtler, "Joba Chamberlain feels ready to pitch in his first minor-league rehab game next week, and he's getting no disagreement from the Yankees. 'I think that's the next step,' Chamberlain said after a 25- pitch simulated game Friday at the team's minor-league complex. 'To be able to get in there and face some guys, and put a real uniform on. I'm excited about that. We've got through the BPs, we've got through the sim games. Today went really well. I felt good.'"
Look. Extra pitching is always good and everyone loves Joba. One thing I believe will happen when Joba returns is he will have matured. This guy knows he messed up and will do everything in his power to get back to the Yankees and finally prove to the Yankee fans he's the real deal and is here to stay. I'm pulling for this guy big time!
Austin Romine: Romine's back has been barking all season and he's on the DL still. This is kind of a problem considering Russell Martin's literally shit the bed when it comes to his offense. Martin's average is down to .176. Chris Stewart is terrific defensively but the Yankees won't just put Stewart in as a permanent catcher and dismiss Martin, they want Russell to work out whatever funk he's in. That being said, in 74 at bats, Stewart is batting .270. Romine would be nice but we need him healthy...and he's not. According to Joe Girardi in George King III's piece HERE, he says: "...is a couple of weeks away from playing in a game." Let's be fair... Girardi says that about everybody... look at his comments on Nunez above.
