(Freddy Garcia pitches during the first inning)
Freddy Garcia gave the New York Yankees exactly what they needed this afternoon in Boston. In scorching temperatures Garcia pitched 6.2 innings only surrendering 1 run to lead the Yankees to a 6-1 win. It was the first game of a day-night doubleheader and guarantees the Yankees, at the very least, a split of this four games series. Garcia completely hypnotized the Red Sox hitters with 69-mph breaking balls, mixed in with an 89-mph fastball. Garcia kept the ball down all day and the Yankees defense helped him with some fantastic plays in the field. Freddy left the game in the 7th after surrendering a two out single and Cody Eppley got the final out to complete Garcia's line for the day. His final numbers: 6.2 IP -- 1 Run -- 6 Hits -- 2 BB's -- 5 K's.
(Andruw Jones greets Jayson Nix after Nix's home
run during the fourth inning)
Before Garcia even broke a sweat the Yankees handed him a 4 run lead. Nick Swisher smacked a 3-run-home run (his 13th) in the top of the 1st and the Yankees never looked back. Once again, it was the long ball front and center for the Bronx Bombers today. Andruw Jones hit a pair of home runs (his 8th & 9th) and Yankees utility man Jayson Nix hit his 3rd home run of the season in the 4th inning. In fact, Jones was on both ends of Yankee back-to-back home run innings. In the 1st inning Jones followed Swisher's 3-run shot with a solo shot, and then in the 4th, Jones hit his second homer of the day followed by Nix's blast. With this afternoon's win the Yankees currently are now 6 games ahead of the Orioles. Tonight, Phil Hughes takes the mound looking for his 10th win and to try and help the Yanks sweep the double header.
Game Notes:
- Derek Jeter had three hits today. His average is once again climbing..he is at .309 for the season.
- This was Andruw Jones' 43rd multi-HR game of his career.
- With today's win, the New York Yankees are 22-9 in last 30 games, all against teams above .500
