Don’t be a fan when you watch these games. I mean, yes, be a fan, but be a manager in your mind. Look at these players and look for the flaws and the prospects... pay attention to the innings pitched and hits the pitching allows. Think about the pitching sequences, and watch if guys like Brett Gardner get a good jump to swipe second base. All of it is important for Opening day and beyond. It’s a building block. I’m not telling you what to do; if you want to root like it’s a real game, more power to you, I’m just telling you there are guys that will get cut, there are guys that will end up in Scranton Wilkes-Barre, and there are a few that will straighten out their swing and get into a grove come Opening day. That’s the goal.
Look, I’ve been waiting for baseball all winter and now it’s here... no doubt it's fun when it's back and no doubt I have the game on whenever I can see it, but the reality is, Spring Training is a sign of spring and with the East coast about the hit 70 degrees tomorrow, believe me... it’s definitely here... it’s really here!
Even my kids are getting in their Spring Training, and it was only triggered because the Yankees have started, not because I told them too. Every ballplayer needs down time, but when America’s team hits the field, my sons have learned that that’s the sign that baseball’s back. The Yankees are America’s team and soon enough, my new American flag will fly in my yard and the sound of my kid’s mitts and bats will be heard outside until it’s dark. They’re fine tuning they’re skill, and soon enough, it will be Opening day for them too.
So yes, enjoy Spring training, it’s a blast, but scores don’t matter now, just shaking off the cobwebs and perfecting their craft matter do matter. After all, we’re the New York Yankees, and we’re about to embark on our 28th World Championship...no too shabby.
