[kap-tuhn, -tin]
noun
1. a person who is at the head of or in authority over others; chief; leader.
I find it to be absolutely outrageous that no one, NO ONE has addressed one of the biggest issues surrounding the Red Sox Booze & Chicken parties, except for Bleeding Yankee Blue of course. (Read WHY RED SOX NATION IS DIVIDED.) Where the hell was Jason Varitek in all of this? Look, we’ve ripped this Sox organization for a long time involving Jason Varitek and his big fat “C” on his chest. But let's face it, if he's wearing it, then he must be the Captain, so be it Jason! We all know he's the Captain, we get it, but is he really? I mean, in this whole demise of the Red Sox, where the hell was he?
You can sit there and try to blame Terry Francona for not “controlling” his team all you want, but it’s almost like comparing him to a school teacher who turns his back to write the assignment on the blackboard and 3 boys stand up and spitball the nerds in the class only to have her turn around and see nothing but snickering. Terry Francona didn’t know how much nuttiness was really going on and probably just assumed “boys will be boys”. But guess what, they’re not boys, they’re men and Jason Varitek is the leader, the Captain and for him to wait until today to finally address the Booze and Chicken party is not only a little too late, it’s cowardly. If I'm the Red Sox organization, I'm disappointed in Mr. Varitek's leadership and I don't resign him because one thing he is not, is a leader...."C" or no "C."
One thing I know following the New York Yankees as long as I have is I know what leadership is. Derek Jeter is a Captain, a leader and if this type of situation happened in Yankeeland, Derek Jeter would have a press conference the next day. Not because he wanted to, but because he represented the team and he knows his role.
This is how Jason Varitek addressed the incident today in an interview on WAAF’s Hill-Man morning show:
“It still always comes down to us performing. He (Francona) can’t hit for us. He can’t make a pitch in the 9th inning for us. The only thing he can control is putting us in situations that allow you to be successful.”
Well Jason, you missed the entire point, or maybe it was the line of questioning that threw you, but either way, if I’m a Captain of a team that made a historic collapse and was caught drinking during games and even in the dugout, I’m making a statement apologizing for being a poor Captain and not focusing my peers.
Terry Francona Ladies and Gentlemen, doesn’t deserve any of the blame for the drinking and buckets of chicken in the clubhouse; he was doing his job during games; making moves and managing his club on the field. Is it so much to ask that grown adults actually do their jobs too? Does Terry Francona really have to hold their hands? I’m sorry; the majority of the blame falls on Jason Vartiek, a peer to these players. Shame on you Jason for not taking the fall. The entire interview is HERE. Not one moment did he take a leadership role and accept responsibility. That's surprising and disappointing.
And while I’m on the subject of disappointing, I read that Curt Schilling is blasting the Red Sox organization accusing them of “character assassination.” Read that HERE. I’m sorry, Curt, when were you relevant in any of this? It’s over for you, isn’t it? Stay out of it bro. The Red Sox players did this to themselves, the Red Sox organization is allowed to “character assassinate" anyone on their team, they own them.
Red Sox Nation’s crumbling Ladies and Gentlemen; it’s like the Boston Tea Party all over again, just better.
