In 2010 Nick Swisher hit a career high .288, 26 points more than his previous career high average of .262 in 2007 while he was still with the Oakland A's. We know Swish is a pretty good hitter, but we had a hunch that his average would take a dip after his great 2010.
We talked about UZR with Brett Gardner and Curtis Granderson, so why not with Swish? Swisher had an 8.0 UZR in 2011--third in Major Leauge Baseball among right fielders--meaning he saved about eight runs for the Yankees this season defensively. Good for him. He may not seem like a great defensive outfielder, but the sabermatricians like him, and so do we. By the way, to refresh you, read more about UZR HERE.
Nick Swisher does have a $10.5 million team option that may or may not be picked up by the Yankees this offseason. If it doesn't get picked up and the Yankees let him go elsewhere, we here at BYB wish you Nick Swisher a farewell, and we've enjoyed your three years here in the Bronx. But, gut feeling is that he'll be back next season. GM Brian Cashman loves him, and his ability to get on base (.360 career OBP), so it'd be a logical choice to bring him back.
