Pitchers & Catchers report to spring training this week. Most baseball fans see this as an exciting moment every year. It always happens about an hour after the Super Bowl ends.
But why? It’s not like anything exciting happens for another few weeks. Is it some sort of right-of-passage? Do we all subconsciously like watching dudes doing stretching exercises? Quite frankly, the specific action of Pitchers & Catchers reporting is dull, uneventful, and utter nothing to 99% of us.
Here’s the real deal, Baseball & Football are unarguably the two most popular sports in America. Basketball is nice and nobody cares about hockey. In the fall, baseball & football overlap, but after the Super Bowl there is a lull for most of us. Real Baseball doesn’t start until April. So what do right minded fanaticals like ourselves do? We latch on to anything that will get us through the cold, snowy month of February. And March is one of those months that is usually chilly and really boring. We’re all stuck in the winter doldrums. How do we cope? We dream of lazy summer days, the smell of freshly cut grass, having a beer with good friends, and watching a ball game.
So, it’s not the actual act of Pitchers & Catchers reporting that we enjoy. (Lets face it; nothing really happens that matters to any of us.) It’s this idea of better, happier times ahead. It gets us away from our winter blues.
Celebrate my friends; better times are just around the corner. Here’s to #28!!!
