AN ARRIETA-YANKEE CONNECTION?

Source: Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images North America
Yup, Jake Arrieta is a free agent, and the Yankees would be fools not to at least give him a look.

Now look, that headline above may seem deceiving, but it's not. It's a question. I thought for sure the Yankees would be looking at a stud like Arrieta, but it doesn't appear to be a big name they want.

Photo: New York Daily News
In fact, I suspect all their resources go toward Shohei Ohtani.  Anyway... this is what we found on the Arrieta-Yankee connection... if anything.

MLB Trade Rumors has this:

Source: Stacy Revere/Getty Images North America
"The Cardinals, Nationals, Astros, Rangers, Phillies, Yankees, Angels, Mariners, Braves, Twins, and Dodgers could be in the mix depending on the price."

Alot of competition there.  Yanks may just bag it.  In fact, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe does his "Rumor Mic Drop" and doesn't even include the Yanks.

Photo: Getty Images
"Jake Arrieta has already received a lot of interest as arguably the top free agent pitcher, or at least co-No. 1 with Yu Darvish. The Brewers, Twins, Blue Jays, Rockies, and Rangers are known to have checked in with agent Scott Boras. It’s still not out of the realm of possibility that the Cubs attempt to re-sign him."

Gives me even more reason to suggest the Yanks are going another route.

More to come...

MARINERS WILL 'PUSH HARD' FOR OHTANI...

And trust me... every other team that has the resources will do it too.

Not a big headline, it's more of the same, but it's the Mariners, so you gotta take it seriously.

Hardball Talk writes:

"Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto, debuting a new weekly podcast with club broadcaster Aaron Goldsmith, made no effort to hide his team's eagerness to recruit Shohei Ohtani now that there's a posting process in place to allow the Japanese two-way star to pursue a Major League career.

Photo: Newsday
Dipoto said the Mariners have been preparing their pitch for the 23-year-old Ohtani for more than a year now, and the GM believes the franchise's history with Japanese players could be a significant factor...

'To me, the worst thing we can be is sitting on the sideline being too conservative, sitting on our hands when an opportunity to change the history of the organization comes along. Because this is what this might be.'"

Nothing new here.  Every GM with money is gonna say this. It's just that the Mariners are a team that really, really want Ohtani, and this is worth reporting.

Stay tuned.

CROSS BRAD AUSMUS OFF THE MANAGER LIST

Latest right here.  Brad Ausmus is not a Yankee Managerial option.  The Angels snatched him up.

According to The Orange County Register...

"The Angels are also hiring former Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus as a special assistant to the GM. Ausmus was fired in September after managing the Tigers for four years.

Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports
A former big league catcher, Ausmus will assist with scouting and evaluations of the Angels system, amateurs and players in other organizations. Bud Black held a similar role with the Angels in 2016, when he was between managing jobs."

There you have it. Nothing earth shattering, but just wanted to keep you in the loop.

WHY ARE THE BASEBALL VOTERS WHINING?

I'm having a hard time with all of this.  You know me.  For quite a while now I've been one of the writers that have voiced my opinion about steroid users in baseball and how it's a terrible thing to see.  My reason was simple; as my children get older, they ask questions.  As my kids get older and I teach them about cheating and performance in baseball and sports and the right from wrong and all of that, it was getting more difficult to explain to them, especially my now 15 year old. It's hard to explain to a young baseball player that many athletes use steroids and HGH to get ahead in this game, but he cannot.  It's a hard thing to explain to a kid, because for far too long they were taught about NOT cheating... and now their heroes are doing exactly that.

Mike Groll/AP
This whole thing about Joe Morgan writing a letter to voters lobbying them to not vote in candidates tied to steroids is interesting. No... it's fascinating.  Because what I've seen over the past few days is some of the biggest cry babies in the baseball writing complaining.  And these writers are people that I have long respected.  Writers that... I don't know... think they deserve an apology or are "insulted" because a letter like that went out to them in the first place.

Let me say that Joe Morgan was a dynamic ballplayer.  He also happens to be Vice Chairman of the board of directors for the Hall of Fame. But here's another part of it;  He doesn't want the Hall tainted.  That comes from him being one of those old timers who doesn't like what he's seeing in this game either.  But here's the other significant part to this.... it's a request from Morgan. It's an opinion, just like opinions from you and I or any of these baseball writers out there that are lucky enough to cast votes and decide who belongs and who doesn't when it comes to the Hall of Fame.

Reading Joel Sherman of the New York Post who I have for a long time respected, made my mouth drop open.  Here's some of it:

"...The baseball Hall of Fame, more than every other Hall combined, is the most meaningful and cherished by its fans. The debate and furor surrounding who gets in and who doesn’t is more intense than most major political elections in this country. It means people care. It also means that, like everything else in this nation’s life now, it is polarizing.

There are no easy answers for how to cast a vote. The passion of those who line up on the side of 'just vote for the best players regardless of confessions or innuendo' is as powerful as those opposed. If you are a voter — and I am — you are going to be called an idiot and/or soulless by lots and lots of people. This is part of the deal now. If you can’t take it, don’t vote. I would rather have the fervor that shows how important this is to people than have indifference."

But what Sherman doesn't seem the realize is the voters aren't some elite class. They were allowed the duty of voting, and they should do exactly that.  And this is going to sound cruel... I DON'T CARE HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING RIPPED AFTER YOU MAKE A VOTE. It's the role you were lucky enough to have. So while Sherman suggests that "if you can't take it, don't vote", he continues to complain about being ridiculed like he deserves a medal.  It's either one of the other Joel. I'm surprised by that. That being said, this too will pass. I'm disappointed in Joel, but I'll get over it.

And this Jeff Passan "I quit" garbage is laughable. Did you see this?

That's right. He's doing something noble or something deciding to give up his vote. No one cares Jeff.  No one cares. Someone else will gladly take over. I'm not losing sleep, but I imagine you will one day regret that move.

I like Jeff.  I'm surprised he'd put down his sword so easily.  It shows weakness. It shows defeat.  These are writers that I've looked at for years for guidance and hints on how to perform and develop into a well read publication... and when it gets too hard, they wanna quit? THIS IS THE OCCUPATION YOU CHOSE. It's not all sunshine and rainbows and you know that. Not everyone will agree with you... where the hell are you running?

Tell me how to take over your duty of voting for the Baseball Hall of Fame, because I will gladly take it over.  This is something only fools do.  Stop it.

Joe Morgan can say whatever the hell he wants.  It's his opinion.  But what these whiny writers are forgetting is that for years their opinion, while many agree and many more don't meant something.  There was dialog! They sparked debate and they had some banter with their audience. And when it comes to the voting, they did what they thought was the right vote each season and while I would bitch and moan every single year... that's the game.  That's what the give-and-take is with baseball fans. We all know this. So complaining that it's HARD and that they CAN'T do it anymore is silly.

If I'm receiving that letter from Joe Morgan, I'm smarter than this. I'm sitting on it for a few days. Maybe I craft my own letter back to him appreciating his concerns and thanking him for starting this conversation in baseball once again.  But then... I'm moving on with my life.  Why? Because Morgan is entitled to his request.

He's been around for a long, long time.  He's allowed to speak out... he's owed that.  But these writers? They forget just how much power they have in this game and especially with this exercise.  What they should have done was ignored this and moved on.  Instead, they're looking for sympathy from admirers like me, tying to put Morgan on blast publicly and you know what? I don't care.

Do your job... and in Jeff's situation, I guess you give up. Whatever ,man.  For a long, long time I admired the strength of these baseball writers / critics.  Now I see people like Morgan are weeding them out.  It's disappointing as an aspiring journalist, and it opens my eyes a lot.  The same folks who write opinion all day can't see the big picture; ultimately Morgan's concern is nothing more than an opinion.  Not a demand. Not an order... AN OPINION. Deceiver, guys... and stop whining.

In the end, being able to vote for the Hall of Fame is a very nice privilege.  But don't act like you're a God because of that duty. Instead, embrace it... and for the love of everything holy... take the responsibility and EVERYTHING THAT COMES WITH IT... and vote.

No one is gonna die, and fans like me always get over it.  Sure, some of us may not like who you vote in, but so what.  That's the responsibility of what you do.

And to Jeff Passan... seriously... if you don't want the duty any more, tell me who I need to talk to and I'll gladly take your spot.  Walking away is ridiculous and you of all people know that in the business you're in, this gimmick will only make you look smaller in the eyes of your critics and fans... and that's not you.

REFLECTING ON JUDGE'S ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD

I'm thankful for a lot of things. As a Yankee fan, I am thankful for Aaron Judge. When Judge won Rookie of the Year, I was pretty happy and I've been thinking about it since.

“I'm still a work in progress; there's a lot of things I need to improve on...”

Those are the words of a guy who just put together a pretty incredible Rookie season. Those are the words of Aaron Judge. If you've read my stuff in the past, you know the soft spot I have for this kid. The reason why is demonstrated in this MLB.com piece:

(Jim McIsaac/Getty)
"The gentle giant from tiny Linden, Calif., claimed the Big Apple as his own, shattering Mark McGwire's rookie record by belting an AL-leading 52 home runs. In 155 games, Judge compiled a .284/.422/.627 slash line, leading the AL in runs (128) and walks (127) while ranking second in RBIs (114), on-base percentage (.422) and slugging percentage (.627). "

I mean think about that. Are you kidding me? How many kids in today's game would have a year like that and still realize that they have areas they need to improve on?

Kathy Willens/AP
Even if they did, how many would have the humility to put it out there to the national media? Aaron Judge has found his home in right field in the Bronx and I believe he will be roaming it wearing pinstripes for quite some time. Will we as fans have to learn to deal with the strikeouts? Absolutely. But it looks to me like he is trying to do something to correct what needs be corrected. Judge joined Ted Williams (1939) as the only player to tally at least 100 runs, 100 RBIs and 100 walks in his rookie season.

If you love dreamers... if you love new life in the Bronx... embrace Judge.  He's the whole package, folks.

THANKSGIVING DAY RUMOR: OHTANI IS ON THE WAY!

First things first, HAPPY THANKSGIVING from all of us at BYB to all of you. We hope that you spend the day with friends and family making memories, enjoying all of your family traditions and eating a lot of good food. The holidays are OFFICIALLY here now.

So now that the holidays are here we all probably have a wish list item or two. At the top of my Yankee wish list this year would have to be making an exciting free agent splash. What would be a more exciting splash then signing Shohei Otani? Or....is it Shohei Ohtani? Whatever the spelling, he's an exciting wish list item for any team.

I am trying not to get ahead of myself here but media reports everywhere are running with the Yankees as the "favorite" and likely team to sign him. The more hype I read, the more excited I get. Look at ESPN, and New York Post and the NY Daily News stories. ALL of them say insiders are giving the Yankees the best odds. Rumors can be wrong, but man....let's hope this one is right on the money!

ESPN says that cities that have a large Japanese population might have a greater chance is signing him (duh) and other Japanese players could be great ambassadors for their teams. It will be interesting to see if or how those factors will play a role in any of this.

I love the confidence that scouts have with Ohtani signing with the Yankees but the Dodgers are another good fit for him. Can you imagine a starting rotation led by Ohtani and Clayton Kershaw? That would be a devastating 1-2 punch. The Dodgers certainly have that Japan tie working in their favor with Yu Darvish, Kenta Maeda and even Hiroki Kuroda too before his Yankee days. The fact that he would also hit in the lineup easily could be appealing to him.

I wouldn't count the Seattle Mariners out either. They need pitching and have a history of signing Japanese players. They have ambassadors in Ichiro Suzuki and Hisashi Iwakuma but not as much money to sign him and aren't as competitive as other interested teams.

What about the Texas Rangers?  They need the pitching and they have the most money available to sign Ohtani but not by much. Maybe the small difference in money and the promise of being part of a contending young Yankees team will convince him to come to the Bronx.

I hope all of these expert reports are true and maybe Masahiro Tanaka can recruit and make this a done deal!

Happy Thanksgiving BYB family!

#ALLRISE HAS SHOULDER SURGERY

Source: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images North America

Our Rookie of the Year, Aaron Judge, went under the knife on Tuesday to repair what the team is describing as a "loose-body removal and cartilage cleanup" on his non-throwing shoulder.  In his Judge-like ways, the Yankee right-fielder down played his left shoulder symptoms during the second half of the season, including the post season.  But, as we all witnessed, Judge's incredible defensive plays took a toll on the 25-year-old outfielder's shoulder and it hurt his offense as his batting average dipped after the All Star Break.

Source: Eric Christian Smith/Associated Press

"In the first half, Judge hit .329 with 30 homers and 66 RBIs. He capped it off by winning the Home Run Derby. In the first 44 games of the second half, Judge hit just .179. In September, though, he got hot again, belting 15 homers and batting .311. Judge finished the regular season with 114 RBIs," reported ESPN.

Source: MLB.com

Judge's shoulder sustained a number of blows to the wall as he made terrific defensive plays, robbing a number of extra base hits and even some home runs.  According to the NY Times, "In the playoffs, the same shoulder took a blow when Judge crashed into the right-field wall to steal an extra-base hit from Houston Astros first baseman Yulieski Gurriel in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series. Judge tumbled to the ground after colliding with the wall."  We all cheered for him but at the same time, the impact was scary and worrisome.

Source: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images North America

"On Aug. 30, with persistent questions about the condition of Judge’s shoulder, Manager Joe Girardi said the team and Judge had discussed the possibility of Judge getting a cortisone shot," said the Times.  There was no confirmation from the team whether or not Judge got the shot.

Source: Elsa/Getty Images North America

The good news is that Judge is expected to be ready for spring training so the timing of the surgery could not be better.  Wishing our runner-up MVP and Rookie of the Year a good recovery and lots of rest during this holiday and off season.

Take care, #AllRise.

HERE COMES OHTANI!

The big hurdle has been jumped.  Shohei Ohtani is coming to the Major Leagues.  That comes from the entire baseball world, but we'll go with Mark Feinsand's tweet on this one:

Now what? We wait and see.  I like this piece by John Harper of the New York Daily News though. Here's a portion:

"... great news for the Yankees, who many baseball people believe to be the favorite to sign Otani — and not because of their money, in this case. That’s what makes this situation so fascinating. Because he’s not yet 25, the MLB collective bargaining agreement severely limits his earning power, no matter which team signs him, which means Otani will be picking a team based on some type of personal preference.

But because he wants to hit as well as pitch, American League teams are believed to have an advantage, since it would be much easier for a team to allow Otani to hit as a DH than expose him to injury playing the outfield on days he’s not pitching. "

Look, all indications are the Yankees will eventually be that team to bring Ohtani to the the Major Leagues.  Hideki Matsui will help with that. Masahiro Tanaka will as well.  And don't get it twisted, the Yankees will try everything to get this kid.

Something special is happening in Yankeeland, folks.  You gotta be excited.

YANKS MAKING ROOM FOR THE OHTANI PUSH

Photo: MLB.com
It's Otani... then it's Ohtani, but it was always Ohtani, but Ohtani doesn't translate well in the U.S.... and so it was Otani. And now it's not. Doesn't matter... The Yanks are gearing up to get Ohtani.

I found it interesting when the Yankees made that trade with the Marlins yesterday.  As I wrote in YANKEES SCORE ANOTHER PITCHER! GARRETT COOPER IS GONE!...

Photo: Caleb Smith / New York Daily News
"It's being reported tonight that the Yankees have traded Caleb Smith and future star first baseman Garrett Cooper for right hander Michael King and some 2017-18 International signing bonus money."

And the part about the International signing bonus money peaked my interest.  Now Pete Caldera of the Bergen Record maps it all out...

Photo: Getty Images
"The Yankees also added some international bonus pool money for their anticipated pursuit of two-way Japan League star Shohei Ohtani... And there’s likely to be a Kentucky Derby-sized field of suitors for Ohtani, the hard-throwing right-handed pitcher and lefty power hitter who is intent on playing in the majors in 2018... Also on Monday night, the Major League Players Association announced that it had agreed to a 24-hour extension – until 8 p.m., Tuesday - for a new posting agreement to be reached between MLB and Nippon Professional Baseball.

And Yankees’ icon Hideki Matsui is ready to assist in delivering his fellow countryman to the Bronx. 'If he’s allowed to come here and the Yankees are interested, then I expect to be involved in that process as maybe trying to convince him or recruit him to the Yankees,’ Matsui told MLB.com on Sunday."

And that's the gist of it... positioning themselves with a shot at Ohtani.  We will know more tonight.  For now... we wait.  More Ohtani-Yankee Wonder.

Stay tuned.

YANKEES SCORE ANOTHER PITCHER! GARRETT COOPER IS GONE!

Courtesy BC Athletics
And just like that, the Yankees have made 3 moves and got a crap load of pitching in just a few days.  Pretty damn incredible.  Go Cashman, go!

Source: Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images North America
It's being reported tonight that the Yankees have traded Caleb Smith and future star first baseman Garrett Cooper for right hander Michael King and some 2017-18 international signing bonus money. And I found this interesting. According to FanRagSports.com...

"Miami already has 6-foot-3 first baseman Justin Bour on the roster. Adding the 6-foot-6 Cooper could potentially spell Bour against left-handed pitching, despite Bour hitting six home runs in 87 at-bats versus lefties in 2017."

Now, what about King.  I'll tell you... King is a righty,  minor leaguer and 22 years old.  He was 11-9 with a 3.15 ERA last season.

Great youth movement happening here folks.  Get on board. A ton of young Yankee future coming your way.

I can't wait to find out what happens next.

THE YANKS ARE STOCKPILING FOR THEIR PITCHING NEEDS

Stockpiling pitching is a good thing. I have always believed that.  Collecting youth to build a solid farm system, AND stockpiling pitching is better.  Cashman is doing everything right the last few days.

The latest comes for the Yankees PR department.  We just picked up a lefty in Reiver Sanmartin from the Texas Rangers in exchange for righty Ronald Herrera.

Sanmartin is a lefty which is a bonus, he's Columbian and his numbers are OK with a 2.27 ERA in the minor leagues last year for Spokane. He's also only 21 years old. I love this.

Just wanted to keep you all in the loop here at BYB.

Yanks are making moves. 2 minor league lefties in 2 days.

ROB REFSNYDER'S STILL GOT IT!

Photo: Getty Images
You all know I'm a big Rob Refsnyder fan, but the problem with Rob Refsnyder being on the New York Yankees was that Ref didn't have a defined spot, and while the Yankees liked him, there was no place for him. Hell, even Rob felt that, and before you knew it, he was shipped out to the Blue Jays.  Read THE FINAL FAREWELL from back in July, right before the trade deadline.

Photo: Getty Images
Anyway. now comes word that Refy has latched onto the Cleveland Indians perhaps.  That comes from #BYBHub member, Jessica of the blog Girls Like Baseball Too. She put this out in a Tweet:

Pretty funny.... and Tribe insider has this:

So there you have it.  Another former Yankee on the move again.  Good luck, Robby. I always liked you and I hope you succeed.
