WHAT JUAN SOTO'S DECISION TO REJECT THE NATS OFFER MEANS FOR THE YANKEES

Source: Associated Press

The New York Yankees are one game shy of the All Star Break. And it could not come any sooner. The last 10-days have been a rollercoaster for this team. Between the Reds and the Red Sox, the Yankees have come down to earth, with a few scrapes and bruises. They are certainly a team that needs a reset—a control, alt, delete style reboot. And when they log back on, they could have a shiny new outfielder with them.

"The Nationals are looking to trade Juan Soto after he turned down a 15-year, $440 million offer from the team. The Yankees have been looking for an outfielder, and of course this would be quite an upgrade over Andrew Benintendi, Trey Mancini and others," reported The New York Post on Saturday.

What is also interesting and certainly not something I was considering until Jon Heyman mentioned it in his column, is that Soto could be considered a replacement for Aaron Judge who also rejected his team's offer at the beginning of this season. "Both New York teams could also afford to go the limit in extension talks. And in the Yankees’ case, Soto would also represent dream insurance should the long-running Aaron Judge talks not pan out. Soto is seven years younger than the great Judge, and as a bonus, left-handed."

The Yankees have seen Giancarlo Stanton become a fantastic addition to the outfield this year. His defense has given the team more options at designated hitter, opening up opportunities to rotate the talent in the field and off the bench. Joey Gallo has failed to meet expectations at the plate, despite providing a strong defensive option and Aaron Hicks is hit or miss, more miss than hit. Soto would be a terrific addition, but I can't help but want to take a hard pass. The Bombers have Matt Carpenter, a later add this season, who has been performing well. And I want to keep the money for Judge, who more than deserves the raise.

"An early favorite for Soto just might be the San Diego Padres, the former “small” market team that’s been full of surprises and thrills the past few years under GM A.J. Preller, a young man who knows the game and loves a gamble," reported The Post. Recall that the Yankees courted Manny Machado and lost to the Padres for $300 million. The New York Mets could also be a player as they seek additional bats to compliment their lineup and compete for the division championship in the second half of the season.

Could the Yankees pick up Soto? Yes. Do they need a guy like Soto? I mean, sure- he's 25, he's a lefty bat and he is a great defender. More importantly, however the Yankees need to reset, have a come to Jesus and figure out how they are going to outperform their competition, even those little teams that seem to get at their goat and beat them. Juan Soto's decision to move should not tempt the Yankees; instead, they need to focus on their strengths, use their farm system relevantly and DFA players who simply don't add any value to them.

MANCINI WOWS, ALONSO DOMINATES & OHTANI CAN'T LIVE UP TO THE MEDIA'S HYPE

I am so tired of the media blowing up Shohei Ohtani. They are infactuated with a story about a guy in the MLB that has only played professionally here for just 4 seasons. But suddently he's better than Babe Ruth. How is that possible? That's one point.

My second point is there's a reason why Ohtani hits AND pitches. It's because when he was able to receive bids from MLB teams, it was written in his contract that this is what he will do when it plays for an MLB team.

MLB up and comers? They don't get that same treatment because once high school hits, so many of these future MLB'ers become players OR solid pitchers because their coaches (or their parents) let them become P.O.s (pitcher's only.) That usually bleeds over to college and it usually stays the same way. So, by the time they reach the pros, if they are lucky enough, their talents at the plate are usually just about  gone and so they don't go back. And that's the fault of our ridiculous system.

But Ohtani, he's the phenom.

I know... you're asking me why I'm being such a dick when it comes to Ohtani, it has nothing to do with his talents or ehtnicitiy at all. It comes down to the fact that he was able to do this while plenty of other athletes in the US, black, white, asian, purple could not.  Just chalk it up on him having a good agent I guess.  Good for him... the guy's an absolute stud.  But when it comes to overhype like the media and ESPN did last night, you really gotta give them a black eye...because in the end, the guy that was supposed to set records in this year's home run derby in Colorado couldn't get past the first round.  The media has egg on their faces.  Let this kid play and stop hyping him up. He too is human.

Trey Mancini was awesome last night and that's a story. A guy that no one expected made it to the finals and just an all around nice guy. You cannot beat that.

And of course Pete Alonso. He was built to hit home runs. He wasn't overthinking it... he was just pounding the baseball. Look... there are people that are great for baseball right now in this league... Ohtani, Mancini, Alonso, Soto... all these guys are great role models and it was a fun and interesting home run derby.  But lets keep it real... the media has learned to blow many a story and the Ohtani one is one of them.

In the end, the choices for the Derby were great, the players themselves had terrific personalities and over all it was great to see all those fans out to watch greatness after a terrible year of COVID.... but let's keep it HERE. Let's not overhype players that can't live up to it.   In other words... let these athletes play... it's so much more fun!

Congrats to Alonso and big shoutout to all the competitors in the home run derby. It's never easy... but you all made it great!

CAMERON MAYBIN: THE WILLIE 'MAYS' HAYES OF THE NEW YORK YANKEES

Anyone else love this dude's energy?

There's something very special about Cameron Maybin.  I mean, this guy's a veteran at this point, but he knows how to rev up a clubhouse and of course, when it comes to his bat, athletic abilities and the incredible way this guys knocks in runs and scores himself... how can we not root hard for this guy?

He is a spark plug for this Yankees team... much like Willie 'Mays' Hayes of the Indians in 'Major League' of course.

Last night Maybin did everything right for the Yankees in their 14-2 romping of the Baltimore Orioles.  4-5, 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs.  I mean even the Baltimore Sun was talking about this guy... reluctantly I assume:

"Cameron Maybin blooped an RBI single among center fielder Stevie Wilkerson, right fielder Trey Mancini and second baseman Jonathan Villar on a ball that had a 7% percent chance of being a hit, per Statcast…

The relievers who followed him did little to quell New York’s might. Gio Urshela hit home runs off Miguel Castro and Tayler Scott, and after Maybin took Tom Eshelman deep in the ninth, Higashioka homered off David Hess for the Yankees’ 16th home run of the series, tying the 1977 Boston Red Sox for the most in a three-game set. "

The point is, this guy was a huge part of the win last night, but everyone rallied around that energy.

I'm a big fan of Maybin. He's batting .310 this season. Sure only 6 stolen bases, but 20 RBIs and 33 runs scored in only 145 ABs.  Big contributor.

Energy, energy, energy! Love this dude on this Yankees team this season!

JUDGE COULD GET SOME SERIOUS HARDWARE!

Source: Al Bello/Getty Images North America
Just a quick note and it's nothing that you don't already know.  Aaron Judge was great for the Yankees this season.  .284 / 52/ 114.   Well... that should mean something.

MLB.com has this. The names connected to a few serious awards:

"ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
American League
OF Trey Mancini, Orioles
OF Andrew Benintendi, Red Sox
OF Aaron Judge, Yankees

Photo: Getty Images
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
American League
2B Jose Altuve, Astros
OF Aaron Judge, Yankees
2B Jose Ramirez, Indians"

It should be also noted that teammate Luis Severino is up for AL Cy Young award, competing against Chris Sale and Corey Kluber.

At any rate... it's nice to see the Yankees kids be possibly rewarded for all their hard work this season.  Remember, we are in a building year.  We weren't supposed to make the playoffs.  Man oh man did they do something special, huh?

I leave you with this from MLB.com:

"Winners of those eight prestigious honors will be announced from Nov. 13-16, all on MLB Network at 6 p.m. ET each night."

Good Luck Judge and Sevy.
