THE CASE OF MCMAHON'S MISSING LOWER HALF

Watch one Ryan McMahon at-bat—really watch it—and you’ll see something that would make any Little League coach start pacing like a nervous dad behind the backstop:

His lower half clocks in late. His upper half clocks in early. And the bat? Oh, the bat just sort of waves through the zone like it’s trying to hail a cab in midtown. It’s not synced. It’s not connected. It’s not… good.

This is what people mean when they talk about the “kinetic chain.” In a proper swing, energy starts in the ground, moves through the legs, rotates through the hips, and finally explodes through the hands and barrel. It’s a whip.

What McMahon is doing right now is less “whip” and more “wet noodle.” All arms. No engine. Right now, McMahon is hitting like a guy trying to win a bar bet with his upper body.

His legs? Optional.
His hips? On vacation.
His hands? Working overtime like they’re getting paid by the swing. And when that happens, the results are exactly what you’d expect:

  • Late on velocity
  • Out in front of off-speed
  • A whole lot of empty swings

That 35.2% whiff rate from 2025 didn’t just fall out of the sky—it packed a suitcase and followed him into 2026. We have been seeing it for months.  Yes, he singled in his first at-bat of the season. Baseball loves a good prank. Then came the 0-for-22 stretch, which felt less like a slump and more like a public service announcement.

Meanwhile, in the Yankees Dugout…over on the bench sit James Rowson, Casey Dykes and Jake Hirst. Three hitting coaches. Three. At this point, you half expect one of them to at least accidentally fix something on McMahon's swing.

Now, to be fair—because fairness matters even when we’re annoyed—these guys aren’t clueless. This is the New York Yankees. They have more data than NASA... just ask Boone, he uses it more than he actually manages. But it's true, the Yankees coaches can tell you the exact millisecond McMahon’s swing goes off the rails. But if they know, they aren't fixing it.  Why are they missing the problem? From the outside looking in it sure feels like they’re doing nothing.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. What looks like a mechanical disaster might actually be a timing issue wearing a bad disguise. If McMahon is:

  • Starting late
  • Rushing to catch up
  • Guessing instead of reacting

Then suddenly the lower half doesn’t just “disappear”—it never gets a chance to show up. And once that happens, the upper body panics. The swing speeds up. The hands take over. And boom—you’ve got a guy who looks completely disconnected. So, is it mechanics? Timing? Both? Right now, it’s playing like a greatest hits album of everything you don’t want.

And so, for me, here's the Fix. Widen the base. Sit into the legs. Let the lower half actually do its job. It’s Hitting 101… which is exactly why it’s so maddening. Basics matter, especially for McMahon right now.  Because here’s the catch: fixing that isn’t a quick tweak. It’s a commitment. And midseason? That will be like deciding to rebuild your house because a window won’t close properly. It can get worse before it gets better. A lot worse. Do the tweaks in April!

Now look, I never wanted McMahon. Not a big fan of the guy.   And if this is who McMahon is right now—if this disconnected, all-arms swing is the plan—then the Yankees have a bigger issue than a McMahon bat cold streak. They have a lineup spot that opposing pitchers are going to circle in red ink. Fastballs up. Spin away. Repeat until further notice.

And unless that lower half starts showing signs of life, the results aren’t going to magically change because the calendar flips to May. Dude's gotta work to fix it.

Look, this isn’t panic… yet, but it’s not nothing either. You don’t run a 35% whiff rate, follow it up with at-bats that look like a mechanical guessing game, and just assume it’ll all sort itself out.

At some point, either:

  • The swing gets reconnected
  • The timing gets fixed
  • Or the results keep telling the truth

And the truth, right now, isn’t subtle. For a team like the Yankees—with all their resources, all their expectations, and yes, all their money—this is the kind of problem that shouldn’t linger.

Because if it does? Then Ryan McMahon won’t just be struggling. He’ll be exactly what frustrated fans are already starting to fear. A guy with all the tools… swinging like he forgot where he left them.

Yikes.

A CRAZY NEW NAME FOR HITTING COACH IS OUT THERE!

Remember Manny Ramirez? Every baseball fan does. He was one of the most feared hitters in baseball during his years with the Boston Red Sox and throughout his MLB career. Now 14 years removed from his playing days he would like to return to Major League Baseball, but in a much different role.

Manny's playing days may be long gone, but now he is looking to get back into the coaching world and he has let all 30 MLB teams know. Jon Heyman talked about his credentials on MLB Network and X last week.

As Heyman mentions, he has credentials. He knew how to hit, that's the reason he was every pitcher's nightmare. But can he TEACH someone how to hit? That remains to be seen, and is a valid question. Manny had the "it" factor, but can he develop that in someone else? He doesn't have the long resume of teaching hitting skills like he does making clutch hits. So does his MLB experience give him the real credentials to jump to MLB again as THE hitting coach?

It's an interesting scenario to think about especially after leaving MLB in 2011 after testing positive for PEDS for a third time. Boston has a history of bringing back former Red Sox favorites into special roles for the organization. Could Manny be the next edition after David Ortiz and Pedro Martinez? It's what Boston does.

But is it what the Yankees would do? Considering James Rowson could easily be heading back to Minnesota as their new manager, the Yankees would need a new hitting coach. It would be crazy, but the Yankees do a lot of crazy things like keep Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman around. The Yankees are also obsessed with the long ball, and Manny had plenty of those. It's too crazy in my opinion....it's not a fit.

I'm curious to see where this goes, the man with the "credentials" as Heyman says and the man with the PEDS background....is there a team out there (besides Boston) that will really give this guy a chance?

Can Manny even articulate and teach others to do what he did? That would be a season worth watching. It could be a disaster, or hilarious....or just crazy enough to work?

THE YANKEES MAKE SOME CHANGES BUT WE NEED MORE!

A week after the Yankees were eliminated in the ALDS by the Blue Jays and some coaching changes are being made. That could be music to any fan's ears but before we all get excited, will they be the "right" changes?

Of course, we all want those changes to include Aaron Boone because he's a proven loser since 2018. He's a well liked loser though to Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole and others so as much as we want to see him get dumped the Yankees have made no indication that he will be fired. Multiple sources, like the New York Post HERE say Baboonie is expected back for a ninth season, but a couple familiar faces will not be.

The Yankees are rumored to NOT be bringing back first base and infield coach Travis Chapman. That's not a big loss. After watching Anthony Volpe (VolpE6 as I call him) become a liability and the laughing stock of this team I think this is an early Christmas or Hanukkah gift! It's worth mentioning also that there was a public riff between Chapman and Baboonie back in August. Baboonie yelled at Chapman after a baserunning error from Jazz Chisholm and later expressed regret for it and wished that it was handled privately. Funny how Baboonie gets in a tizzy with Chapman and then he isn't invited back, huh?

The bigger name on this list of names not returning is longtime bullpen coach Mike Harkey. He's been around since 2008 and is one of Baboonie closest confidants. He's the only coach on this team that actually knows what it feels like to win a championship. He's not a regular face by any means but it is odd to think about a different guy in this role. Maybe it is time though after the Yankees bullpen finished with a 4.37 ERA and was the eighth highest in the majors.

After two years as the Yankees hitting coach James Rowson may be leaving the Bronx for a promotion. The Yankees have given the Minnesota Twins permission to speak to Rowson about potentially returning to Minnesota as their new manager. He previously was the Twins hitting coach from 2017-2019 and is highly respected there. Now that the Yankees achieved the highest-scoring offense in the majors this season under Rowson's coaching this feels like a no-brainer for the Twins if both sides want to reunite.

This is just the start. According to the Athletic HERE, Pitching coach Matt Blake and catching coordinator Tanner Swanson have club options. I would be surprised if Blake's option wasn't picked up because he has a lot of support with Cole and he didn't completely suck. Bench Coach Brad Ausmus and third-base coach Luis Rojas now have expired contracts. I'd be lying if I said I would miss Ausmus so I am going to spare you.

So the Yankees could look very different from a coaching perspective next year. But does it make a difference if Baboonie is still managing and Brian Cashman is pulling his puppet strings? It's still insanity no matter how you rejig everyone else.

WHY IN THE WORLD DOES JAMES ROWSON STILL HAVE A JOB?

It's more of the same. It's another hitting coach that holds a position while the Yankees habitually freefall offensively in June and July. It's the same episode that I am freaking tired of watching produced by Yankee brass.

Remember Dillon Lawson? He was the Yankees hitting coach in all of 2022 and part of 2023 before being fired, because he sucked. Then Sean Casey replaced him midway through the season, and he wasn't great either but in fairness, he wasn't around long enough to make long-lasting changes. Time just wasn't on his side in that dreadful 2023 season and when it was over he chose not to return. So the Yankees moved on.....

Moved on to James Rowson. At first, I was cautiously optimistic when we wrote DON'T LOOK NOW, BUT NEW YANKEES HITTING COACH IS DOING WHAT WE ASKED! It started off great. But it always does. The Yankees are red hot in April and May and then predictably free fall in June and July and then scramble to put it all back together in August. It just doesn't work and I'm tired of watching it.

To be fair, Rowson doesn't deserve all of the blame for the Yankees' 13-14 record in June, but you know what....I don't care at this point. I am tired of the same crap every season. NFL teams dismiss their coordinators when they have a slump. Granted, their season is a nanosecond compared to ours, but they don't keep coordinators around that aren't getting results. As stacked as this team is every season, with the payroll they carry and the star power the expectations are high. Hell, expectations are higher than ever now with Aaron Judge's prime being wasted and having a championship drought since 2009.

The Yankees have no lead in the AL East. Instead, we are tied with the damn Blue Jays. That hurts my pride a little, but clearly not the Yankees. They can't figure out how to hit a damn beach ball with a bat right now. There has to be accountability here, and Rowson has said he's not worried about the Yankees offensive woes, read more HERE. Every year, same slump in summer, no one is worried and the Yankees underperform. It's wash, rinse and repeat. I am tired of it. This didn't fly back in the days we had real leadership....this team is soft.

And it will continue to be soft with this approach. The Yankees have lost 13 of 19 with last night's game and are batting .160 with RISP during that span! It's unacceptable. This is not how a team gets back to the World Series, it's how a team makes an early exit and golfs in the fall.

Rowson needs to go. The Yankees current formula for batting coaches hasn't worked. It's time to burn that strategy book and actually recruit LEADERS who can mentor and manage this team.....because it's been missing for a (painfully) long time. Yankee brass may be content with mediocrity....but WE don't have to be.

Sorry Rowson - someone's gotta be the first to go and it should be you. That's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.

EVEN STAT ANALYSTS DON'T KNOW HOW TO FEEL ABOUT THE YANKEES

I had a few readers tell me we've been too negative lately. Okay, you can feel the way you do. I won't try to change your mind, but I'm not feeling so positive about the direction this team is going in. I know I am not the only one, but interestingly enough another source feels even less optimistic than I do.

I have to say I am a baseballreference.com enthusiast. I love their site and use it DAILY. Have you seen their 2024 MLB playoff odds? Check it out HERE. Now I have to say, I don't have warm and fuzzy feelings about this season, but I am not feeling as pessimistic as they are. So, to the folks who want to read more positivity it's a start.

Honestly though, The Post has a good write up of what this prediction really is based on, you can check that out HERE. So, their predictions come from a calculation of run differential and difficulty of the schedule from the previous years' last 100 games. Okay, that's an oddly specific calculation that has absolutely nothing to do with the number of active injuries on the team or the player and their statistics in that sample size. So instead, this prediction is based on run differential and the schedule difficulty. Even if their model used a different sample size (not just the last 100) I don't think the final result would be positive. The Yankees gave up 36 more runs than they scored last year. When the team batting average is hovering around the .230s it's a pretty bleak outlook.

I get it, the Yankees were AWFUL last year, and we didn't acquire enough upgrades this winter. Juan Soto alone doesn't fix this team. Gerrit Cole is going to miss significant time.... it's a gamble. But am I the only one who thinks Baseball Reference's predictions of a 2.7% chance to make the postseason are low? What about their prediction to win 71 games? This team isn't exactly sexy looking on paper, but that is a pretty intense prediction.

I'm looking at other predictions like Fangraphs, who predict the Yankees to win 88 games and BetRivers Sportsbook predicts 91 wins and scratching my head. I do not think this team is a 90+ win team right now. Pitching is a big concern, and with Cole out I don't feel confident with the rest of the rotation. I also think Soto is an upgrade to the offense, but the rest of the team couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Look at team stats and you will see Gleyber Torres (.273 BA), and Aaron Judge (.267 BA) were our best hitters. Scary thought considering Judge only played in 106 games due to injuries. The Yankees have a lot of work to do to win 88+ games. I'm not sure if new hitting coach James Rowson can make this miracle happen so soon.

So, do I think the Yankees will have another tough year? All signs point to yes at this point. Do I think the Yankees are a 71-win team? NO and they better not be that bad. I love Baseball Reference, but their analytics guys are just as bad as the Yankees analytic nerds.

That's not a good comparison.

DON'T LOOK NOW, BUT NEW YANKEES HITTING COACH IS DOING WHAT WE ASKED!

After YEARS of seeing and hearing things I didn't like from former hitting coaches, I'm finally hearing something good. But now, will it translate into the regular season?

In case you missed it, Greg Joyce had a good write up last week about how the Yankee offense has stacked up in recent years, check it out HERE. We've all felt that the Yankees have not met expectations for a long time. It's one thing to talk about not winning a championship since 2009, but how about an offense that has been in a steady decline since 2019.

The Yankees have hired all of these analytically driven "experts" for years who know nothing about baseball. We've heard about exit velocity and launch angles for years and it's done nothing good for this team. But now, James Rowson is trying to change that.

That will be an uphill battle, but you've got to start somewhere. Reading this article, you really think this is back to basics and that MLB players should know how to hit but the Yankees have done everything they can to brainwash their players and ruin all baseball fundamentals. That's where we are at.

But now Rowson is trying to fix it. He's implemented the art of situational hitting early in spring training. We need guys like Anthony Volpe who is young and impressionable to think about their at bat when there's guys on first and third with one out. Or what about the scenario of guys on second and third with two outs? The Yankees need to get back to these basics so they can execute when the games really count starting next month.

This is definitely the place to start. If Rowson can make tweaks and improve veteran guys like Giancarlo Stanton and DJ LeMahieu, and help the rest of the lineup be consistent this team will be on the right track. It's a long way to go though. This won't be easy but, Rowson has the right idea. It's taken a long time for the Yankees to underachieve offensively, so it's going to take time to turn this around. The Yankees finally have a vision! Now....can they execute?

I'm cautiously optimistic, because at least we aren't hearing more of the same analytical nonsense. I've said the Yankees need to get back to fundamental baseball. I will admit I wasn't sold on our new hitting coach when we signed him......but if he does this and it fixes the Yankees, I will gladly eat crow.

YANKEES MAKE OFFER TO NEW HITTING COACH WHO MENTORED JUDGE!

If you wrote a letter to Santa asking for the Yankees to hire a hitting coach that can actually teach our guys how to hit and score runs, you may already have your Christmas wish.....maybe.

Several sources are reporting that the Yankees have made an offer for their next hitting coach, and are just waiting for it to be finalized, you can read more HERE. The Yankees may be reuniting with James Rowson. If you are scratching your head and asking, 'WHO IS THAT AND WHEN DID HE WORK FOR US?' you aren't the only one.

He may not be familiar to us, but he will definitely be familiar to Aaron Judge, who worked with him from 2014-2016 when Rowson was the Yankees minor league hitting coordinator. He spent time with the Yankees on two different assignments from 2008-2011 and again from 2014-2016, so he knows the Yankees organization well. Or, I should say he did know it well until it completely collapsed under Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone's watch.

Rowson also worked with the Cubs, Twins, Marlins and most recently the Tigers last season as their Assistant hitting coach. He's certainly not new to baseball, he's been a bench coach and MLB hitting coach but....can he fix the Yankees?

This will be the Yankees 4th hitting coach since Marcus Thames back in 2021. I don't think the Yankees would know how to identify a good hitting coach if one bit them in the butt. I like that Rowson was around during Aaron Judge's minor league days and maybe helped develop him into what he is today, but who really knows? Judge is the connection here that makes this a headline, and still a loose headline at that.

I think we can all agree that Dillon Lawson was a disaster. I was never completely sold on Sean Casey either, even in his short time with us. So now we wait and see what Rowson's philosophy is exactly. Then we also wait and see if he can really connect with the Yankees and help them. I think the Yankees are such a hot mess right now so I can't imagine why Rowson would even want to come back to this crazy train and while it is not official yet, it sounds like this may be a done deal.

I hope this move pays off but looking on paper it is not inspiring. The Tigers OPS, batting average and on base percentage were scarily similar to the Yankees this season. The Tigers were 28 out of 30 teams in OPS+, 27 out of 30 in batting average (2 better than the Yankees), and 26 out of 30 in on base percentage (Yankees were 27th). How is this guy the upgrade that will help the Yankees offense? I just don't see it.

So welcome back, Rowson. I hope you can fix this trainwreck of a team that can't hit. I am admittedly skeptical though and I am trying not to be. You certainly have your work cut out for you.

BEING A BASEBALL INSIDER MEANS RECYCLING OLD RANDOLPH STORIES...

I mean... you've got to be kidding me, right Jon Heyman?

Actually, this is from CBS Sports guy Sean d'Oliveira who wrote this:

"The Yankees recently interviewed former Mets manager Willie Randolph for a coaching position, reports CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman."

That was written 2 hours ago.

Interesting right? Bleeding Yankee Blue wrote this same story on December 6th, when it broke:
"There's a nugget... and I wanted to share it.

The Yankees like 2 guys, both are coaches in the Yankees minor league system. One is James Rowson and you've heard his name in the mix with Marcus Thames and Dante Bichette when Kevin Long first left.  Then it got quiet.

The other coach being considered is Jody Reed.

As far as the first base coach, the Yankees interviewed Willie Randolph for the job."

That was in:  YANKEES MAY HAVE FOUND THEIR HITTING & 1ST BASE COACH

In other words, the story is old, a month old, which gives me the following thought about Jon Heyman and what he does...

He thinks baseball fans are just plain stupid, or he is desperate to get people "click happy" to read what he has... EVEN IF IT'S NOTHING!

I'm not here to hate on Heyman. I don't even know the man. I am suspicious though... what exactly do baseball insiders do?

BYB readers are smart... you remember we had it back in December. To Phil who sent me your note about the Heyman recycle piece... good looking out bro! Thank you.

To Jon Heyman... you're on my radar pal.

YANKEES MAY HAVE FOUND THEIR HITTING & 1ST BASE COACH

Maybe at least.

Look, as you know, we haven't heard much about a hitting coach for the Yankees.  What we have heard is that no one is too interested.

Eric Hinske didn't want the gig, and just when you thought Raul Ibanez may be a guy that would be perfect for the role, he has a personal matter and pulled out of consideration for even the managers job of the Tampa Bay Rays.  My thinking was if he didn't get the Rays gig, he'd call the Yanks.  Now, with that personal matter in play, forget it.

Marcus Thames was mentioned as well at one point, but the Yankees are promoting him to assistant hitting coach. So the question is... who's the hitting coach?

There's a nugget... and I wanted to share it.

How do you like 'dem apples?

Nice nugget, huh?

IF DAVE MAGADAN'S OUT, WHO'S THE HITTING COACH?

I hate rumors. Why? Because no one's ever correct. And if, God forbid you DO pick the right guy, then you become the "called it" guy... and no one likes them.

Dave Magadan revealed today that he is not the new Yankee Hitting coach.  According to the New York Post, "Dave Magadan was informed Monday he won’t be Kevin Long’s successor as the Yankees’ hitting coach. 'He just called and said they were going in a different direction,’ Magadan said of Yankees GM Brian Cashman. 'He said they were going to continue [the search].'’’

But what is that different direction?

Could it be someone like Marcus Thames who was the Trenton Thunder hitting coach and someone who knows the young players and as they come up to the majors, he can keep an eye on, know the patterns of, and know their attitudes and mold them?  Or is a promotion just not in the cards right now?

Could it be Dante Bichette Sr? I know, I don't see it happening either, but my gut is telling me Joe Girardi is laying it on real think right now. "Come on Dante, come out for a season, let's work together again.  If you don't like it after that or it doesn't work out, go back home. No Biggie." That's me seeing that conversation happening. Don't yell at me Mariana.

James Rowson is someone the Yankees also like and he's been with the organization too. In fact, choosing Rowson makes a lot of sense. They like him.

I'm not gonna be the "called it" guy on this one.  I am telling you the search goes on... and it's anyones guess.

YANKEES LOSE CHILI DAVIS TO THE RED SOX

The rivalry continues, I guess...

Breaking now, it appears that the guy that was considered a top candidate for the Yankees next hitting coach is no longer in the running. The Red Sox have reportedly snagged Chili Davis...

Rod Bradford of WEEI.com reports:

"According to multiple major league sources, the Red Sox have agreed to terms with Chili Davis to become their next hitting coach... The Sox chose Davis from a pool that also included Red Sox hitting coordinator Tim Hyers, Red Sox Double-A hitting coach Rich Gedman, Angels hitting coordinator Paul Sorrento and former Cubs hitting coach Bill Mueller."

Wouldn't it be a hoot if we just went out and tried to now hire Bill Mueller? I kid... I kid.

I guess now we will soon know the future Yankee hitting coach. Reports are it's between Dave Magadan, Dante Bichette, Marcus Thames and James Rowson.
