LUIS GIL IS BETTER THAN EVER!

The Yankees are proving that they can face challenges head on and overcome them. The first challenge of many has been the loss of their ace CY Young pitcher Gerrit Cole, moments before the 2024 season kicked off in late March. Each of the Yankee starters and their bullpen have responded in an impactful way. But no one could have guessed that their youngest starter, Luis Gil would have had the kind of performance he has had this season, most especially on Saturday as he threw 14-strikeouts breaking a previous rookie record held by the beloved El Duque and dominating the Chicago White Sox in a 6-1 win. Yes, Luis Gil is better than ever! And the Yankees team are better for it but what happens next?

"Gil allowed just one run on five hits and a walk. He generated a game-high 22 swinging strikes, including 12 on his four-seam fastball and seven on his changeup. Gil's heater averaged 96.9 mph on the afternoon and maxed out at 99.7 mph," reported CBS Sports. "The Yankees' rookie record previously belonged to Orlando Hernández, who struck out 13 batters in August 1998 against the Texas Rangers. Hernández, known as "El Duque", coincidentally threw out the ceremonial first pitch ahead of Saturday's contest."

Source: MLB.com

If that is not ironic enough, it has been Cole who Gil affectionately calls "Professor Cole" who has been the pitcher whisper, holding class with Gil and the other Yankee pitchers, providing insight into their craft and coaching to support improvement. Cole has been impactful for the Yankee pitchers who have been mostly untouchable the team's 31-15 record but hopefully he will be impactful from the mound in the coming weeks.

Before Saturday's game, Cole threw off the mound and is expected to throw to live batters as early as next week. But what does that mean for the rotation? And who will need to step out of the rotation as result?

Source: AP

"The obvious candidate for a demotion is 26-year-old Luis Gil, who simply has less experience than his peers. This is Gil's first season with meaningful reps and a consistent role. Unfortunately, that could come to an end in a few weeks when Cole returns. If pulled from the starting crew, Gil would either transition into a long relief role or go back to Triple-A Scranton," reported Fansided

Gil has rebounded from injuries, exceeded expectations and has been the Yankees second best pitcher this season, with a 2.51 ERA before Saturday's stellar performance. To lose him would be a tragedy, but how will the decisions the Yankee pitching staff make in the coming weeks impact his player development? What is best for Gil in the long run?

Source: NJ.com

Honestly, I think Gil should stay in the rotation, but I know that the Yankees will likely favor the veterans over him due to their experience. So, in the long run, sending him down to continue to develop is likely best from Gil. I wish we could do a 6-man rotation- something that is not utilized much but giving Cole an extra few days off between starts would not be a bad thing to do given his delicate injury.

It will be an interesting decision that the Yankees will be making sooner rather than later. But for now, let's celebrate Luis Gil and all he has done to give the Yankees their best start in years.

THE YANKEES ARE FOR REAL

I have been holding my breath for weeks.  I have been waiting for the other shoe to drop.  I am still of the belief that Juan Soto won't be with us when the season ends. I am positive he will take the money and go to the Mets and so I am having a really hard time rooting hard for a loaner.

Yup, that's my world.  But let me just say that what this team has done and is doing is unreal and now with the surge of Aaron Judge, the dominance of Carlos Rodon and of course the talent of Soto and every player in between... I have to say it because it's incredible... the Yankees are for real.  It's glorious, exciting and as a Yankee fan... I just want it to keep going.

This being said, I will never use a useless Aaron Boone quote in my writings on the New York Yankees ever here on Bleeding Yankee Blue pages. Boone is a worm, a slug, and has nothing to do with this surge of greatness. He is a mouthpiece; a puppet and I'm ignoring him. For this run... this is the players. It's all the players (and James Rowson) of course.

Let's also talk about the young guys that want to make a name for themselves.  Luis Gil? What a breath of fresh air.

ESPN writes:

"Gil continued his unforeseen breakout campaign Saturday, delivering the best start of his young career with 14 strikeouts -- a Yankees rookie record -- on 98 pitches over six innings as New York improved to an AL-best 32-15..."

"I have a teacher, Gerrit Cole, who's teaching me how to pitch, how to handle situations and how to execute," Gil said in Spanish. "And that's what we're doing, what he teaches me, and we're applying it in the game."

This alone brings me such joy.  This is teamwork. These are good teammates.  Hat tip to Cole.

Then there's Clay Holmes. Jorge Castillo of ESPN wrote a great article about him.

"STUD -- all capital letters there," Yankees reliever Luke Weaver said.

Holmes, in his second full season as New York's closer, has registered 21 strikeouts with three walks in 17⅓ innings and leads the American League with 12 saves. And ask anybody in the Yankees' clubhouse: Holmes' performance in Baltimore earlier this month is still a talker.

Holmes now has 13.

"A lot of it for me is nailing my direction," Holmes said. "I'm able to just move down the mound faster and I just think it helps my body move a little better. Just kind of knowing my lanes, the direction I need to get going. It's a product of me just moving down the mound better. It frees up my arm. The stuff moves from that."

And how about Anthony Volpe. Now I'm going to tell you that I'm not a huge Volpe guy.  But I do like what he's doing with his batting average.  Last year he ended at .209. This year his average is at .270 and that's great.

"Anthony Volpe hit his sixth home run of the season and swiped his ninth base of the season on Thursday. The 23-year-old wasted no time as he launched a lead-off home run, which ended up being the game-winning run. Then, in the second inning, he hit a single and stole second base. After struggling in his rookie season last year, the former top prospect is clearly beginning to find his footing at the major league level. Across 44 games this season, he has posted a .273/.348/.432 slash line, which is significantly higher than his .209/.283/.383 line last year. Volpe was a 20/20 player last season and is on pace to repeat that feat this season."

As Judge said in the Athletic last year: “If he’s going to be the future and be the shortstop here for the next 15 years... you’ve got to have him up here now and just kind of getting used to it.”

And this is why this team is truly unique. Gil, Holmes and Volpe are not top Yankee names, but they are in the mix. They are in the mix of veterans and stars that are offering unique talent and making a contribution to the team.  For me? This team strangely reminds me of 1996.

The Jeter's mixed in with the Mariano Duncans and Cecil Fielders and Wade Boggs of the team.  Meaning... everyone contributes in some fashion.  It just feels right.  While we have a long season to go, I believe that with the return of Cole, the team will just get better.  There is hope that the Yankees can sustain this run.

Look, I am a Yankee fan. I have been one since the day I latched on the Ron Guidry all those years ago.  I have seen some great games, great teams and some really bad ones.  I become happy, I become frustrated and annoyed. But in the end, I love this team.  I just want them to do well.

If you're a Yankee fan... a believer... I applaud you for sticking around.  I was almost out of here. The Yankees horrendous season last year coupled with my busy life made it easy for me to try and walk away.  But this team is exciting, and I'll stick around for a bit more.

To all you Yankee fans and to all you BYB freaks, thank you for being there.  We love you.  We're in it together.

Go Yanks!

THOSE BLAKE SNELL TRADE RUMORS ARE BACK AGAIN!

It hasn't been easy breezy for Blake Snell since last season. He didn't get the long term blockbuster deal he dreamed of. His first three starts of the season did not look good and then he landed on the Injured List in April. He's working his way back but now he's front and center in the rumor mill again. Would San Francisco consider trading him?

If the Giants don't climb out of the dumpster, maybe. The Giants spent a good chunk of change over the winter and expected to be stronger this season and hopefully, give the Dodgers a run for their money. They added Snell AND Logan Webb to form one of the best rotation duos in baseball. Webb has performed well to this point, Snell on the other hand has an 11.57 ERA and has been on the Injured List recovering from an Adductor strain.

Currently, the Giants are 19-25, 10 games out of first place and sitting in fourth place. I never really expected the Giants to give the Dodgers a run for their money but.... I didn't think they would struggle this bad so early into the season. I guess it's no surprise that the trade rumors are already flying, check it out HERE.

Snell should be back soon, but when he does come back if he pitches well, it may not be enough to help save the season and could force an embarrassing fire sale in San Francisco. So, it's never too early for trade deadline talk, right? Well, here come those Blake Snell trade rumors again, hope you aren't still tired of them from the winter because they are back.

The Yankees are always tied to everyone, but the Yankees made an offer to Snell before, that he didn't accept. The Yankees are also a favorite to compete for the World Series this year, so it could make the Yankees go "all in" to try and get him again. His $38.5 million player option for next season could make it hard for the Giants to find a trade partner, but it's not completely impossible. The Mets just dealt Max Scherzer and his $43.3 player option, but he also agreed to exercise his option to his new team in advance. I highly doubt Snell would do this and I can't say I would really want him to.

The Yankees are off to a great start, and I hope it stays that way. A contending Yankees team means they will be buyers and look for the right piece to make them even stronger late in the season. Another top starter to help Gerrit Cole should be on the wish list. They should continue to look for that piece and be ready to make a move.... I just don't think it will be Snell.

For now, the rumor lives on....

THE YANKEES - TWINS MATCHUP IS WORTH THE HYPE

Source: ESPN

There has been so much banter out there about this series against the Twins. And with the fire Minnesota has had after going 7-13 in their first 20 games to turn around and win the next 17, one could see why. Seeing them Tuesday night, as they wore down Carlos Rodon and came out swinging- yeah, Minnesota appears to be the real deal. And so The Yankees - Twins matchup is definitely worth the hype.

Source: The Athletic

"Entering the three-game series that begins Tuesday at Target Field, the Twins have won 17 of their last 20 games, keyed by a 12-game winning streak in which they beat up on the White Sox, Angels and Red Sox. And since then, they have won series against the Mariners and Blue Jays as well, looking poised to give the Yankees a formidable challenge this week," reported The New York Post.

With Aaron Judge finally getting hot and Giancarlo Stanton producing in the DH spot, the Yankees are certainly up for the challenge this three-game series brings. "After batting .174 with a .645 OPS through his first 23 games, Judge is batting .313 with a 1.147 OPS over his last 19 games," reported the Post.

And on the Twins side of the field you have Ryan Jeffers who has been unstoppable. “Jeffers has become one of the better adjustment-making hitters in the league,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He’s got a plan for pretty much everything, and he can execute the plan. He’s competing against off-speed and fastballs, up and down, inside and out. And rarely are you able to find a guy who can actually hit all of these different types of pitches,” reported The Athletic.

The Yankees have held their opponents at bay despite not having their ace, Gerrit Cole, on the hill. Starters have fared well and the bullpen has been a powerhouse. It will be telling if the Yankees pitchers can keep Jeffers, Max Kepler and Carlos Correa quiet over the next couple of games.

Source: MLB.com

"The Yankees' relief corps is again among the best in the sport, with the second-highest Win Probability Added and second-best ERA in the majors. The anchor is the most prominent holdover: Clay Holmes, the only qualified reliever yet to surrender an earned run in 2024," reported ESPN.

This series against Minnesota will definitely keep my attention. Honestly, the Twins have earned it. As the Post admirably said, "The Yankees no longer have a punching bag in red-hot Twins." From the look of things in game one of three at Target Field, it will be a great contest; one we may see again later in the fall.

BLASTING PETE ROSE IN A BOOK REVIEW DOESN'T CHANGE THE FACT THAT HE'S THE HIT KING!

I have to say I was looking forward to Keith O'Brien's book about Pete Rose.  Titled "Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose, and the Last Glory Days of Baseball", it is said to be one of the best reads on Pete Rose, the good and the bad.

I have been a longtime fan of Pete Rose. He was the guy who helped get me obsessed with baseball as a kid. Growing up in Kentucky I would often venture with my family to King's Island in Ohio, and it was the height of the Big Red Machine.  Reds' shirts were everywhere in the theme park because it was Reds country.  You couldn't escape it and I remember when I saw Rose play and hit and as a little boy there was nothing more incredible. A dude playing the game harder than anyone I'd ever seen.  It was quite a thing.

And so fast forward to one of the most ridiculous book reviews I have ever seen from Patrick Sauer of the Washington Post who found it fitting to insert his own personal view of Pete Rose into his review like he actually has the clout to bring his tainted opinions of Rose to the table.  In essence, I do not care.

You see, when you talk about Pete Rose, you talk about hitting. That's when it comes to the discussion of baseball ability. Sure, he gambled and he's admitted it and womanized and hung out with odd folks at times, but it's the hitting that will always stick with me.  In 1985 he broke Ty Cobb's hit record and he'd go on to have 4,256.  An incredible feat.  And for me, that's what stands out most.  For some odd reason, or maybe he's just a foolish ego-maniac, Sauer thought it fitting to demolish Pete Rose as "as colossal jerk" and "I was 9, and I was right." Like... who cares.

Here's the thing; Pete Rose had many flaws, but who doesn't.  Ty Cobb was a racist son of a bitch, but he's in the hall of fame.  And I think about this ridiculous review and think to myself, if Rose didn't bet on baseball is Sauer still talking about how Pete was a Son of Bitch and adding his own personal opinions of the guy or is he passing on writing the review.  My point is saying every negative thing you want to say about Pete Rose, but in the end, he still is the all-time hit leader.  Meanwhile Rose must have kicked Sauer's dog or something because he's angry and almost obsessed with trying to publicly dismantle Rose.

"Outside of a true devotion to the craft of hitting, there is arguably nothing admirable about the adult Pete Rose, and I barely knew the half of it before reading “Charlie Hustle.” (Even Rose’s nickname was derisive. New York Yankees legends Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle tagged him with it for trying so hard during a meaningless spring training game.)"

Sauer literally dresses down Pete for playing ball too hard and tags a few baseball heroes in there to make it seem more legit. By the way, Mickey Mantle was an incredible player, he was also a drunk and womanizer, but I guess Sauer can let that pass.  Again, this might be the worst book reviews I've ever read.  Sauer's personal antidotes offer nothing but an ego trip for the length of the article.

"One moment late in Rose’s career suggests that even his fiery love of the game had some fraudulence in it. O’Brien cites multiple people who say that Rose, while playing with the Montreal Expos, used corked bats. One of the people is a clubhouse manager (and carpenter by trade) who did the illicit woodworking on Rose’s lumber. It calls into question the legitimacy of the end-stage hits that Rose needed to surpass Cobb. I would now wholeheartedly argue that Ichiro Suzuki’s hits as a professional in Japan should count and that his combined total of 4,367 makes him the true Hit King, the one to uncomplicatedly celebrate when he’s elected into Cooperstown next year."

And the worst part of this article/review, whatever it is, is the constant pounding and this quest for influence like his opinions matter.  No Patrick, Ichiro, while incredible, is not the true Hit King, but there needs to be some kind of accolade for him. Pete is the all-time hits leader and its Major League baseball.  Ichiro's numbers are combined and last time I checked, Japan's league is not the MLB. Stop your forcing of rules to make your argument, you're bad at it. Ichiro had 3,089 in the MLB. That's just the way it is.  It's not that we don't want to count all of Ichiro's hits, but you are so big about following rules and having Pete Rose have integrity and how he needs to stay out of the Hall of Fame, but you're perfectly fine bending the rules to put Ichiro in as the All-Time hit leader and yet he didn't achieve it in the MLB? You're literally an idiot.

I like reading books to form my own views of the person being written about. I have to say, in all of my years of journalism, I have never quite read a more foolish article/review than the one that Patrick Sauer has written for  "Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose, and the Last Glory Days of Baseball". And here's the worst part; he did O'Brien and injustice. I may never read it because Sauer tainted it with dumb opinions and ego. No one cares that you thought that Pete Rose was a jerk at 9.  I met Rose twice and both times he was fantastic.  And you know what? No one cares about that either.  Rose was a degenerate, a womanizer and got himself in a ton of trouble.  But he's also the all-time hits leader and yet Patrick Sauer cannot admit or praise the one single part that makes up Pete Rose on the baseball field.

Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame.  He's not a man of character. He's had bad judgement in his life. But at the end of the day, he's a Hall of Famer because of 4,256. That's it.

Sauer can kick rocks.

JASSON DOMINGUEZ IS READY FOR REHAB & TO FIGHT FOR A BIG LEAGUE SPOT!

I have been anxiously waiting for Jasson Dominguez to get back into action. I was pretty crushed when we lost him last September. It feels like an eternity has passed, but he is finally ready to start rehab. As long as it has felt for me, it must've been infinitely longer for him.

On Tuesday or Wednesday, Dominguez starts his journey back to playing in meaningful games again. The real question will be, will those meaningful games be in the majors back at Yankee stadium again or down in the minors? The Yankees may have a tough decision to make if he completes his rehab with no setbacks.

According to Aaron Boone, Dominguez will start in a DH role only for the first two weeks and if all goes well, start to transition to some field time. You can read more HERE. Once rehab starts, so does a 20-day clock and once the clock expires the Yankees will have to decide if they are adding him to the major league roster or optioning him to the minors.

That 20-day clock sounds scary, but a lot can happen by then. For years, this team has been ravaged by injuries so a lot can change quickly. Currently, the Yankees are set with Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo in the outfield. The Yankees also have Trent Grisham on the bench, who hasn't played much thanks to his abysmal .69 BA. Right now, there is no natural place for Dominguez and I say natural because I wouldn't want to just call him up to sit him on the bench. He had a quick promotion to the majors last season after playing in nine Triple-A games, he needs to play every day.

But again, anything can happen in almost three weeks. We could see Giancarlo Stanton come down with some sort of injury or anyone else really. That could change the landscape of the roster giving Dominguez an opportunity. Honestly though, I'd like to see this team stay healthy and if I am being completely honest, I want to keep Verdugo's bat in this lineup.

So I'm excited that our Martian is almost back. I haven't been this excited about one of our young guys in a long time. I really think he will be a difference maker for us in the future. That being said, my gut tells me if the Yankees have no injuries, they will assign him down in the minors if he finishes his rehab with no issues....and I am okay with that. He needs to play every day and even if he doesn't get on a big-league roster now, it's coming. We saw what happened last season, so he will get his opportunity.

If we don't see him in a Major League stadium here soon, it will be because we are healthy and that will be a welcome change. We don't need to rush him right now. They say good things come to those who wait so for once, I am okay with being patient, for now.

WHY CAN'T THE YANKEES BEAT UP AMERICAN LEAGUE RIVALS?

It's Mother's Day. Unfortunately, the Yankees are not home, they are in Tampa, which means that the game is at Tropicana Field which also means that my blood pressure is higher than normal. The Yankees play well against tough teams, but when they play AL East teams, they seem to cave. Why can't the Yankees beat up American League rivals? Your guess is as good as mine.

"On Saturday, the top two hitters in the Rays lineup combined to go 5-for-7 with three doubles, two home runs, five runs and six RBIs to even the series ahead of Sunday’s rubber game," reported the New York Post. This after the Yankees played a nail biter against their nemesis on Friday night that led to a 2-0-win Yankees win.

Their bats went quiet, and the bull pen got lit up by the Rays hitters on Saturday. "The Yankees (26-15) got a three-hit day from Anthony Volpe, but only two other hits from the rest of the lineup," reported the Post. And who came to life? Yandy Diaz and Randy Arozarena. As the Post says, "ganging up on the Yankees."

Their offense goes off against the Astros, but it is silenced against the Baltimore Orioles. They somehow have the magic touch when the Yankees play against them. According to ESPN, "The Yankees, featuring two of the sport's biggest stars in Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, are expected to contend again. The Orioles might have their best team since the 1990s with an exciting young core and new ownership group invigorating the fanbase." And it was the Orioles that took the early season series against the Yankees (3 out of the 4 games).  They will face the Orioles again at Yankee Stadium in June. But my fear is that they have the same kind of outcome.

According to ESPN, "The New York offense, a bit feast-or-famine thus far, has already been shut out four times in 27 games. It has scored fewer than five runs in 12 games and is in middle of the pick in runs per game. Judge finally got his season batting average above .200 on Sunday. The pitching staff, meanwhile, is tied for the second-best ERA in the majors despite not having Gerrit Cole and losing Jonathan Loáisiga for the season."

The Yankees need to figure out how to pull it all together. With Cole likely back in June, and the bull pen hopefully getting some arms back as well, the Yankees need to right the ship with American League East teams this June when they play Boston, Baltimore and Toronto.

As my son says to me all of the time, the Yankees need to "pummel teams." Like they did with Houston. And this means taking down AL East teams and reminding them who is boss. We can start with a series win today, Mother's Day, against the Rays. Then, we go out to red hot Minnesota and do the same. It is about winning series, convincingly, repeatedly, overtime.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL THE MOTHERS

It's no easy task.  You have children, you raise children, you try and teach right from wrong. You bathe them, clothe them, hug them, yell at them, snuggle with them, teach them to speak, teach them manners, respect, pride and you would hope that through all of it, a nice, strong, confident young man or woman would grow up to take on the world's challenges.

A mother's work is never done. A mother does not get the love and respect they deserve. Now you and I will do everything we can today to make sure Ma feels loved, but why not every day?  I don't do this enough in my own life, but I often reflect on the sincere, loving moments of my youth when mom came through in a pinch.  When I needed a little push, a little encouragement.  Trust me there were times that I was not strong enough to do something or say something to show self-respect and my mom in her loving, forceful manner would try and try until she'd snap and look at me and say, "OK, enough of this, just do it."  What she was saying was "Don't be a pussy, this is life and you have the confidence... FIND IT." And she was right.  So many moments in my life I would take a beat think, "Can I?". But ultimately, I would try and do whatever it was I was trying to accomplish. Sometimes it would not work out. Other times it did.  But in the end, what mom was saying was, "Do it... what can happen? If you succeed, you did it. If you fail, you learn from it."  In other words, Mom knows the plan already... they just want you to find it on your own feet, with your own heart, to find your own confidence as a human being.

I started Bleeding Yankee Blue in 2010.  It was a labor of love. It still is in some regards although the world moves pretty fast and I really can't give it the time I want to.  Now my kids were little when it all began and now they are grown... my youngest are 14. But I look back at my life here and I think about all the little nuggets I have put forward on BYB about life lessons and confidence and learning experiences and strength in ones self... much of it comes from my mom, but a lot of it comes from my wife as well.  She is the rock in my house. She knows the schedules, the events, she understands how to speak to the school educators when I want to ride them for giving my kids a bad grade.  She knows when to yell and when not to. I am in awe of her.  I'm in awe of her the same way I look back on all the things my mom did when she helped raised my brother and I when we were young.  A mom's job is thankless.  We don't give them enough credit.  I almost feel terrible to think that I only truly think about this one time a year... today.  But here's the bottom line... Mothers are amazing, we should be talking about it all the time.

And so, if you are a mom, relax today, but going forward, don't be afraid to pamper yourself a little more.  If you have a mother, call her today, see her today, hug her today.  I am lucky enough to have both parents in my life still.  I'm blessed. My kids are blessed to have their mom and their grandparents.  But sometimes in their life of growth and maturity and becoming adults and young adults I need to often remind them to stop once in a while and reflect on the moments, the love and support our mothers give every day. The job is hard... the job is tough... but they do it... because they love us, and they want us to succeed.

I found this story online on Facebook.  Now while not everything on Bleeding Yankee Blue is about the Yankees, I try my best to relate a lot of stuff to sports and baseball whenever I can.  This story or article speaks to mothers in youth sports and all they do for their kids.  Yes, many dads run youth teams, but it's the moms behind the scenes that do so much more.   So Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there. You are incredible people and deserve a huge Thank you. Check this out, it's from the Heart of Youth Baseball:

"Baseball has been known as a man’s game for many, many decades. The coach is a man. The scorekeeper… a man. The umpire… a man. The game is surrounded by sometimes fit, or sometimes out of shape coaches, some of them yelling… many of them teaching… some of them have it all figured out... and yes, all of them... MEN.

Even the assistant coaches are men! You know, the ones helping because they were asked too… but really don’t know what they’re doing. It’s true… and we all know a coach or 2 like this.

But for many young baseball players, the fondest memories of baseball are because of a woman. A very, strong woman. Your mother.

Mom is always there. Through thick and thin, no matter what... mom is always involved in your baseball life.

Mom helps get you to practice and to your games on time. Mom’s the one that makes sure you have your water bottle. The one who will bring you your cup and chest protector because, it doesn’t really matter how many games you’ve needed it for over the years, you still manage to forget it. But not your mom. Don’t worry, she’s on it! Mom always saves the day!

Mom is the one that will cheer for you in the stands... the one wearing the cool sunglasses on those hot summer days, and the one wearing the scarf and heavy coat on those crisp fall games. Warm or cold... even damp games... mom is there.

Mom’s the one that will cringe if you let up that 2-run home run, but let you know that it’s “just a game”. Yet she’ll make sure you know that you were awesome hitting that 3-run single and it’s “more than just a game”. That’s mom... always finding the positives in baseball.

Mom makes sure the car is warm after those rainy, cold nights. She’ll even have a blanket for you in the car, just because she knows how hard you worked out there. And if you play your cards right... even if you lose, that hot chocolate will still be waiting for you when you get home. And that loss is forgotten by the time your head hits the pillow.

Mom will clean that filthy uniform. That’s right… even the worst of stains… it doesn’t matter. Your pants WILL be spotless next game, because she knows how important it is...not only for your team, but to you... and her. Appearance is everything!

Your mom will buy you ice cream after a big win… and will hug you hard after a bad loss. She’s always there to talk… and even if you’re frustrated about a bad call or a ripped batting glove. Mom takes the brunt of it, because to her, you're a ballplayer, and she knows it’s passion… not true anger.

And when it’s all said and done… after the hustle and bustle of getting you to and from the practice, making sure you’re fed before game time, making sure you have your bat and first baseman’s glove, spikes and eye black, and that uniform perfectly pressed, Mom will make sure you always keep your chin up no matter what.

Because even if you have a bad game, you’re number one in her eyes always.

“Do your best. Never give up. I’m proud of you. Keep working hard. I support you. I love you. You’re my champion.”

That’s mom. That’s what moms do. It’s a mother’s voice and presence that makes everything OK at the end of the game. She’s your rock. She’s your motivation. She’s your biggest fan. Without mothers in baseball… ballplayers would never have such drive and motivation to be as great as they can be.

Because mothers are the unspoken glue in this whole game. They are thanked WAY too little, yet moms aren’t even looking for that.

What a mother is looking for is that you are always happy in this game, and always prepared to be the best you can be out there.

So, the next time you play your game... maybe even today… do the right thing. Give mom the day off from her business of getting you prepared for this game. Do that yourself today... and go big for her!

But always listen to her words… because in the end, it’s a mother’s voice that inspires us all to be truly great out there. It’s her wonderful actions, her support and her soothing tone that helps you as a young ballplayer... to keep pushing toward being a success in this game...

“Do your best. Never give up. I’m proud of you. Keep working hard. I support you. I love you. You’re my champion.”

Happy Mother’s Day, moms.

You’re appreciated. You are our champion too."

CLINT FRAZIER IS BACK AT IT!

I was always a fan of Clint Frazier. I was thrilled when the Yankees got him from the Indians, and I wanted him to blossom in the Bronx. The Yankees had too many contracts to deal with and ultimately those contracts took a front seat and what happened next to Clint Frazier is a tragedy in New York. They treated him poorly and, in the opportunities he was given, he really didn't deliver. I mean, how can you? Injuries didn't help either. You just get going just to stop and wait. It's tough for a young kid in the biz.  He's bounced around since then, but now he's got another shot and good for him.  Clint Frazier has signed with the Charleston Dirty Birds.

The New York Post writes:

"The former Yankee signed with the Charleston Dirty Birds of the Atlantic League on Thursday after failing to catch on with an MLB franchise this spring... The 29-year-old outfielder is looking to get back to the big leagues after a tumultuous start to his MLB career."

It's good to see this guy still trying to fulfill his dream. I wish the guy well.

COLBY WHITE IS A NEW YORK YANKEE

It happened in a hot second.  The Yankees just upgraded their arms.  I guess that statement is up for debate though. I mean Colby White I believe is a solid pitcher with a bright future. He was a 6th round pick for the Rays.  But he has struggled with injuries. That being said, the Bronx is sometimes a place known for second chances and success... and that's what Cashman is banking on.

MLB Trade Rumors writes:

"The Yankees announced Thursday that they’ve claimed right-hander Colby White off waivers from the Rays, who’d designated him for assignment late last week. White has been optioned to Double-A Somerset. The Yankees already had an open 40-man spot after designating outfielder Taylor Trammell for assignment and outrighting him to Triple-A..."

Command after injury seems to be the issue with White, but it's something the Yankees hope to fix in White while he's in the minors. We shall see.

For now, it's welcome to the New York, Colby!
