HURRICANE HARVEY HIT CLOSE TO HOME FOR THIS FORMER YANKEE

If you are like me you have been watching news on Hurricane Harvey since last Friday and saddened by all of the stories and pictures coming out of Houston and surrounding areas in south Texas. A lot of us are far away from where Harvey made landfall. Former Yankee Nick Goody was far away from Texas....but Harvey still hit close to home.

I can't imagine being far away and unable to help friends or loved ones in a dangerous situation. While Goody was with the Indians in New York City his aunt Paula Haynes's home was flooded and he went on Twitter to plea for help "If any1 is in the Beaumont/Nederland area and has a boat. My aunts house is flooding. And my family is stuck," he wrote at 1:30am in a post that has since been deleted. He included his aunt's address and phone number that rescue groups quickly found, re-tweeted and were then able to get to her. He posted a thank you message including a picture later that morning.

When boats showed up at his aunt's home and she was safe she tipped rescuers to neighbors around her that she knew also needed help, read more HERE. That is paying it forward and shows that people can come together in times of distress. It's hard to hear so many stories like this, but how amazing is social media? It got help to Goody's family and others around her. At least it has a happy ending.

Many people are stepping up to help people who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey. The National Weather Service is still reviewing rainfall totals but just looking at pictures that have been all over the news and social media....Harvey has left a devastating amount of damage and dropped record breaking rainfall totals.

I'm glad Goody's family is okay and it is good to hear about all of the stories in the news about people reaching out to help those affected by Harvey. I especially loved how the Tampa Bay Rays stepped up to let the Astros use Tropicana field to play their home games AND how they donated those proceeds to help hurricane relief, read HERE.

There's another powerful hurricane churning in the Atlantic named Irma. Let's hope Irma stays out to sea. Many people still need help. If you want to donate, check your local news for any donation drives in your local communities. I know where I live we have had many diaper and water drives all week.

You can also donate money by visiting the Red Cross website and donate HERE (minimum of $10) or you can also grab your cellphone and text HARVEY to 90999 to donate $10. You can also find a list of local organizations to donate to HERE.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by Harvey.
