IT'S NOT ABOUT THE RIVALRY, IT'S ABOUT HUMANITY

There isn't a long list of requirements for being a Yankees fan. You respect the team, respect the history, and respect the rivalry between us and the Red Sox. Above all of that, you respect the game. That is the most important part. You recognize talent, and you respect the competitors.

On Wednesday, the very unfortunate news on Curt Schilling broke. Schilling was diagnosed with cancer and is now battling it in the biggest game of his life. He was a Red Sox Ace who is best known for his "Bloody Sock" game in 2004. He pitched game 1 of the ALCS with a broken ankle, and by the end of the game, his once white sock was soaked in blood. During game 6 of the ALCS, he once again had a bloody sock. The sock was placed in the Baseball Hall of Fame after the Red Sox beat St. Louis in the World Series.

Schilling's statement (HERE) said "I've always believed life is about embracing the gifts and rising up to meet the challenges. We've been presented with another challenge, as I've recently been diagnosed with cancer." Schilling's statement shows real courage, and strength.

I love this game. I love baseball. And I have the utmost respect for serious competitors. It's what makes the rivalries even worth mentioning. That Bloody Sock? That proved Schilling's will to power through obstacles, and play the game. More importantly, I am human. Cancer is scary. If you have never encountered this disease, count your blessings. It's not something I would wish on my worse enemy, and certainly not on someone like Schilling, who dedicated himself to playing this game to the best of his ability.

Schilling, if you have the opportunity to read Bleeding Yankee Blue throughout your day, know that our thoughts, and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. Uniforms and team allegiance aside for a moment, we understand how hard this is, and we wish you the absolute best.

Make this be the greatest game you will ever win!
