DETAILS OF THE ALFONSO SORIANO TRADE
In a nutshell, the Yankees get back Alfonso Soriano. Soriano would have been a "Yankee for life", according to Michael Kay on his radio show yesterday. Why? Because in 2001, he was the guy who hit the home run in the 2001 World Series to put the Yankees ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1. We all know what happened next... and Soriano's heroics were all for nothing. In 2004, he was traded for Alex Rodriguez. Ironically, he was the guy we traded away... and now he's back.
In addition to Soriano, the Chicago Cubs will pick up $17.7 million of the $24.5 million remaining on Soriano's contract. Yankees exchange for right handed pitching prospect Corey Black. He was a 4th rounder in the 2012 1st year player draft.
On a personal note, I will never forget the time Black agreed to do an interview with Bleeding Yankee Blue back when he was drafted in 2012, but vanished after accepting. I thought about chasing him and at one point I did send him a few follow up emails wondering what happened, but it was clear the guy moved on. Let's keep it real, you don't do that sort of thing...you know, committing and then not actually doing the interview. That never sat right with me. That being said, he's got a ton of potential and I wish the guy well.
Soriano wears #12 now for the Yankees. Vernon Wells now wears #22.
Good Luck Alfonso... good luck to Corey Black.
