There was early Twitter outrage today. Many Tweeted that not only was Eduardo Nunez part of our September Call ups... he was also the shortstop today. I was ready to drive to the Bronx and punch
Girardi in the mouth! This is the world we live in where guys that are supposed to provide good, important information to us fans just don't do their job.
Instead of being right, Marchand wanted to be first...and wrong I might add. For the record, he later corrected his mistake, but what the hell was Marchand thinking? The Yankees are 2 games in first with the Orioles breathing down their neck. We are playing the Orioles again today at 1:05pm and we just lost last night. Yankeeland is in a tizzy and Marchand could have started a riot! DAMN YOU MAARRCCHHAAANNDDD!
Joe Girardi's not stupid. He knows his team isn't playing too well. But he also knows that Derek Jeter wants to be out there for every game, like Don Matting and Mickey Mantle and Lou Gehrig before him. He's a Yankee, an icon and the Prince of New York. But those nicknames aren't important to Derek... winning is.
I believe that managers are a very important part of a ball club, but I also believe the players have to play to win.
Derek Jeter must lead this team and does and any suggestion that Eduardo Nunez play shortstop at this time of year, unless they were to play the Cleveland Indians, is just ridiculous. This game is a big deal today, this entire month is a big deal. The best guys on the field, not the best guys "maybe."
Is Eduardo a good hitter? He can be and I like his speed too but fielding
not his thing. You know what they used to do with guys like that back
in the 80's? They were Designated Hitters or pinch runners...OR, they
had a nice career in the minor leagues because they weren't good enough for the pros. Right now
Eduardo Nunez shouldn't be playing the field in any capacity. Girardi knows this... here's the lineup today:
Do I like Nunez? Am I being too harsh? I like Nunez, I really do and this has nothing to do with Nunez as a person, he seems to be a nice guy, but he can't field. We all know that ALL OF US and I feel like Marchand was just stirring the pot to tick off all of us Yankee fans. But the bottom line is Nunez was sent down to AAA to work on fielding and then he busted a thumb, read
HERE. That injury happened and Nunez really didn't get much practice in at all. So, the brutal truth is, how much practice has he really gotten anyway this year? Joe knows and he won't screw us.
If the Yankees were to put Nunez at short today and they were to lose due to an error, Joe would be cruficied by the press, as well as the fans. Look, the fans only care about winning. We're the Yankees, we put the best team on the field every game and especially when it comes to playing the American League East in September.
So yes, after cutting through all the crap on Twitter today, I'm happy to report that Derek Jeter IS the shortstop today. He's the shortstop every day and should be. Why? Because Derek Jeter is our captain, he's our leader and he wants 2012 to be the biggest championship of his career. I know this and I believe this. He for sure won't fail us and at the end of the day, believe it or not, Joe won't either. The Yankees need to play like champions too though...that's a big part if it.
So game on Yankees... let's win 2 of 3 against
Buck and the Orioles!
