GUESS WHAT EDUARDO NUNEZ'S BEEN UP TO?

With all the injuries at the beginning of this season, Eduardo Nunez had the opportunity to play utility man, making appearances in each of the outfield positions. Nunez is one of those players that fan’s love. He has a great bat. Unfortunately, his fielding is sometimes a calamity.

After committing his fourth error this season, the Yankees optioned Nunez to Triple-A Scranton to activate Eric Chavez, read about that HERE. Girardi said he wanted Nunez to focus on playing more shortstop and stop the moving around. Unfortunately, Nunez was only able to play four games with Scranton. On May 19th Nunez jammed his thumb, landing him on the 7-day disabled list with what is described as a sore thumb. In that time he committed 2 errors and was hitting .231. He started taking ground balls on May 31st but his status remains the same. Read HERE.

This means a number of things. One, Nunez is not getting the playing time he needs to work on fielding. In 2011, when Derek Jeter landed on the disabled, Nunez took over his position.

While he had a slow start and committed 14 errors in total in the SS position last season, he eventually got the hang of it and was a huge part of the team. Sure, he is no Derek Jeter, but not many players are. Nunez is one of those players that should play on a regular basis to be able to perform in the way that is expected of him. Two, it was expected that Nunez would make an appearance in the majors again at some point this year. Clearly, an injury pushes those expectations back.

Unfortunately, not much information has been released on his progress, but with this injury is still lingering, there’s clearly no way he can improve and focus on the shirtstop position if he’s not playing.  I like Nunez even when his fielding makes me want to hum the circus theme song. He is talented despite his errors, I really believe that… and I hope he gets the opportunity to prove that.
