YANKEES FALL SHORT IN COMEBACK, LOSE TO BLUE JAYS 10-7 THIS AFTERNOON

(Hughes reacts after giving up three straight hits to the Blue Jays in the 1st inning)

Today was definitely one of those games where the final score makes the game look closer than it really was.  Phil Hughes started for the Yankees this afternoon up in Toronto and had nothing from the get-go.  Hughes put the Yankees in a huge whole after just 4 innings and, despite the Yankees fighting their way back all game, could not catch back up and lost 10-7.  In just 4.0 IP Hughes surrendered 7 Earned Runs on 9 Hits.  Despite only trailing 1-0 after 3 innings, Hughes imploded in the 4th giving up 6 runs.  It really has been a tale of two Phil Hughes all season.  When he is on he's lights out.  But when he isn't he really struggles, like today.  Hughes final line:
4.0 IP - 7 Runs - 9 Hits - 1 BB -- 1 K

After Hughes departure the Yankees bullpen gave up 3 more runs and who would have thought those 3 runs would have been the difference in the game.  Those 3 runs gave the Blue Jays 10 for the afternoon and they held off the Yankees for the win.

You have to give credit to the Yankees offense.  Despite being down 7-0 they fought back all game but, it was too little too late.  The Yankees hammered out 11 hits, including three hits by The Captain who was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.  In the 6th inning Jeter hit his 9th HR of the season that started the Yankees comeback.  Then Robinson Cano made things a bit interesting when he hit a towering 2-Run-HR (his 25th of the season) that made the score 10-4.  Three more runs in the 7th by for the Yankees, no doubt made the Blue Jays and their fans a bit uneasy.  But, alas, it was not enough and the Yankees have to settle for 2 out of 3 in Toronto.  Once again, the final today in Toronto...Blue Jays 10 - Yankees 7.  Tomorrow the Yankees host Ryan Dempster and the Texas Rangers.  David Phelps takes the mound for the Yankees in place of CC.

GAME NOTES:
  • Ichiro Suzuki was held out of the starting lineup for the second straight game but pinch hit for Nix in the ninth.

  • In the 7th inning, I saw one of the greatest catches I have ever seen that sealed the Yankees attempt at a comeback.  Blue Jays Rajai Davis climbs the left field wall to rob New York Yankees Casey McGehee of a home run in the seventh inning.  It was an absolutely sensational catch!
