"And who wants him most? The New York Yankees, the American League East front-runners, could be a contender for Hamels. Here is a look at whom they could offer:
The team's top prospect, as listed by MLB.com, is 21-year-old Manny Banuelos. He is a strikeout pitcher with three above-average pitches: fastball, curveball, and change-up...
Righthanded pitcher Dellin Betances, 24, is the Yankees' next highest-rated prospect. At 6-foot-8, 260 pounds, Betances commands great power. But, like Banuelos, he at times struggles to locate....
Catcher Gary Sanchez, 19, and centerfielder Mason Williams, 20, were recently promoted to advanced-single-A Tampa. Sanchez, known more for his offense than his defense, hit .297 with 13 home runs and 19 doubles with low-single-A Charleston for the first half of the season. He hit .308 in his first three games with Tampa. Scouts say Williams, who hit .143 in his first three games at Tampa, could be a five-tool outfielder...."
He even mentions Jose Campos. Sure, all those guys, Banuelos, Betances, Williams and Sanchez make sense, if you're the Phillies of course, but let's face facts, the Yankees will never part with all those guys. In fact, a ton of teams probably want them. Look, the Yankees have made it clear, and Buster Olney has tweeted as much, that unless that asking price on the Phillies side goes down, there is no way Hamels becomes a New York Yankee.
One way is could happen though is if Cashman is creative and as you've seen in the past, he's pulled off some brilliant trades to bring in top quality guys giving up only partial farm hands and sprinkling them with other pro guys. Sure, right about now everyone is thinking about Jesus Montero and the Michael Pineda deal, and while Montero was untouchable, he was traded any way.
I do see Cashman slightly trigger happy on a guy like Betances, but not on Mason Williams, Sanchez and Manny Banuelos. So yeah, there is always a chance, but this chance is slim in my opinion.
Kudos to Tyler Jett for a good piece. It makes you think, but most of the prospects he names are just not realistic... and that's my take.
