YANKEES ARE A STEP CLOSER TO A SUBWAY SERIES SWEEP

Though it’s still June, these games against the Mets have a different feeling, like it or not. Everyone in New York thinks these series’ between these two teams are big, no matter the time of year, and following a 4-2 win tonight, after a 9-1 win on Friday, the Yanks are one step closer of completing a sweep of the New York Mets.

The Yankees offense, in total, put up four runs. They struggled early against Mets’ starter Dillon Gee, but thanks to a Mark Teixeira two out, two-run home run, the Yanks took a 3-2 lead before adding an insurance run in the eighth on a Curtis Granderson solo shot off reliever Bobby Parnell. The first six batters in the order (Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano, Mark Teixeira, and Raul Ibanez) each had one hit, while the bottom three (Nick Swisher, Eric Chavez, and Russell Martin) went 0-fer.

Phil Hughes was coming off a complete game, one run win against the Tigers last weekend, and this time around against the Mets he followed it up with another solid outing. He went 6.1 innings, allowed two runs (two solo home runs), while surrendering six hits and two walks while striking out six. But, regarding the home runs, Hughes has now allowed 15 home runs on the season and has allowed at least one in every start this year. We’re just going to have to accept the fact that Hughes is going to give up home runs, and as fans we just have to cross our fingers and hope they’re all solo shots.

After Girardi pulled Hughes, he decided to mix and match with his bullpen (something he’s done quite frequently since the injuries to Mariano Rivera and David Robertson) the rest of the way. Boone Logan came on and retired the only batter he faced (Thanks to a great catch by Curtis Granderson), Cory Wade and Clay Rapada followed him to retire two batters of their own before Rafael Soriano pitched a scoreless ninth to give him his ninth save in as many tries.

Pretty nice win all around, if I do say so myself. Andy Pettitte (3-2, 2.78 ERA) and the Yanks will be looking to complete the Subway Series sweep against Jonathon Niese (4-2, 4.11 ERA) and the Mets Sunday afternoon. Go Yankees!
