Confidence is key in any setting in life. You feel good about a performance, you give
alittle more the next time. You do well,
you climb the ladder and soon enough, you become dominant. What you never want to do is become arrogant,
like you’re better than everyone else. You never see someone like Justin Verlander
do that, that’s why he’s do damn likable and focused and grounded.
You never see someone like Derek Jeter do that, because Lord knows there
is always someone who has an extra step on you somewhere and knock you down a
notch. Jeter leads by example and has more class than any ballplayer I've seen...and he had 5 rings.
It’s a tight rope though.
You want to be the best, you know you may have it in you but if you “act”
like you’re the best, you put your guard down and most likely you get beat. It all goes back to Phil Hughes who has had a
streak of bad luck ever since he hurt his hammy in that “almost” no hitter in
Arlington Texas...read HERE. Let’s be honest, ever
since then, I’ve been waiting for that Phil Hughes. Well, as Mikey tweeted brilliantly the other night… Hughes turned a corner and I’m very happy for him.
You can sit there and say, well, it’s just 2 outings, he’s bound to have a bad outing soon. Sure,
every pitcher is, but those 2 outings were significant. He just looked good both times. Confidence is building and now he knows he’s
in the zone…so it’s On to the Next one.
Sure, I bitched and moaned about how Hughes belongs in the
bullpen (Read WHY THE PEN IS WHERE HUGHES BELONGS), But he just proved me wrong…and hopefully he
continues to prove me wrong, I like that when it comes to my New York
Yankees. Bottom line, there’s some good
news on the horizon, and it may have Phil Hughes' name all over it…I like
that…no doubt we need him right now.
