WHY THE FRUSTRATING YANKEE LOSSES CONTINUE

The Yankees entered this week playing seven games against teams they should handle in the Baltimore Orioles and the Kansas City Royals, but so far this week things have gone haywire. Following a frustrating 5-1 loss to the Royals on Saturday, the Yankees are now 2-4 this week against some inferior competition. (I know the Orioles are off to a hot start, but do we really think that’s going to last?)

Hiroki Kuroda started this one, his sixth start for the Yanks. The narrative so far with him is that he’s either really, really good, or really, really bad. Kuroda was closer to latter scenario than the former scenario, though he didn’t totally get lit up. Hiroki went just 4.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. Better luck next time, Hiroki. 

There’s no way to sugarcoat it, the offense was nonexistent once again. I’m usually patient when it comes to the Yankees, but the lack of offense the last week has gotten me a little impatient, though I’m sure they’ll get out of it soon. Anyways, the Yankees scored only one run on Saturday; a mammoth solo home run by Russell Martin – his first of the season. Russell’s been hot of late, as he’s gone 5-for his last-8 to raise his average above the Mendoza line to .206. Curtis Granderson also picked up a pair of hits, and an 0-for-4 for Derek Jeter drops his average to .390.

Final score was 5-1, Royals. 

Joe Girardi will run Phil Hughes out there again on Sunday trying to salvage a split against former number 1 overall pick Luke Hochevar. It’s a little embarrassing that the Yankees have given the Royals their first two home wins of the season, but what can you do? Hopefully they can pull this one out before coming back to the Bronx to face the Rays next week.
