BREAKING NOW: YANKEES TRADE BURNETT TO PIRATES

The Pirates and Yankees have finally agreed to a trade that will send A.J. Burnett to Pittsburgh, reports Ken Rosnethal of FOX Sports. The Yankees will send Burnett and $20-million to the Pirates in exchange for two low-level minor leaguers: Right-hander Diego Moreno is one of the prospects reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post and outfielder Exicardo Cayones is the other prospect in the trade, reports Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com. The Pirates will also be responsible for the remaining $13-million left on Burnett's contract. Pitssburgh will pay Burnett $5-million this season and $8-million in 2013, tweets Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Burnett will take a physical on Sunday and, the trade just needs to be approved by the league.

For the Yankees, getting $13-million of Burnett's salary off the books frees up enough payroll space for the team to pursue a lefty DH and maybe sign Eric Chavez for another year. Check out the BYB piece we just posted on why Yanks may choose Raul Ibanez over Johnny Damon for that DH role.

BYB will have much more analysis later on the trade so please be sure to check back. But we wanted to bring you the news as it happens.
