I absolutely love Hideki Matsui. Always have. Always will.
There are players who come through the Bronx, wear the pinstripes, and move on. And then there are players like Matsui, who leave a lasting impression on the franchise and the fans who loved watching him play.
Today, Godzilla has been named manager of the Yomiuri Giants in Japan, the team where his incredible baseball journey began. And I couldn't be happier for him.
Think about what this man accomplished. Ten seasons in Japan, 332 home runs, three MVP awards, and three Japan Series championships before arriving in New York in 2003. He came to the Yankees with enormous expectations and never disappointed.
Seven seasons in pinstripes. Two All-Star selections. A career defined by consistency, professionalism, and clutch hitting. And who could ever forget 2009? Six RBIs in Game 6 of the World Series, helping deliver championship No. 27 and earning World Series MVP honors. What a performance. What a Yankee.
But here's what I loved most about Matsui. It wasn't just the numbers. It was the man. Quiet, humble, respectful, and completely dedicated to his craft. No drama. No nonsense. Just a tremendous ballplayer who understood the privilege of wearing those pinstripes.
He represented everything I believe a New York Yankee should be.
Now he gets to return home and lead the organization that gave him his start. And if he brings even half the class, determination, and heart he brought to the Bronx, those young players are in extraordinary hands.
Congratulations, Hideki. Thank you for the memories, the championship, and for representing our beloved Yankees with such dignity.
Godzilla may be going home to Japan, but a piece of his heart will always belong to the Bronx. And he'll always have a place in ours.
Once a Yankee. Always a Yankee.
