WHY IT'S YANKEE DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN

I've become a fan of New York Times Yankee beat writer Tyler Kepner. He writes for one of the largest newspapers in the world, covering the greatest sports franchise in the world.. not too bad! He often writes insightful articles concerning our boys in the Bronx plus, he does a nice job on YES' Yankees Hot Stove. Anyway, today Taylor wrote a piece titled, Yankees Are Saving Now For A Potential Splash Next Winter which was very similar to a piece Bleeding Yankee Blue wrote two weeks ago titled WHY CASHMAN HAS A LONG TERM PLAN.

In both pieces, one thing is very clear; the Yankees have no intention of spending this winter, plain and simple. Kepner feels that the Yankees are saving in order to pick up at least one big free agent next winter. He then goes on to compare the 2007 off-season to this winter and that is what caught my eye. I think Kepner is on to something here. It seems to make sense.

After the 2007 season many fans, just like this winter, were screaming for the Yankees to make a big trade or sign a big name free agent. I was one of those fans! The pitcher that many fans were looking to trade for was Johan Santana. Of course, the Yankees resisted and Cashman did not pull the trigger. I really thought the Yankees made a mistake by not getting Johan. I just thought that guy would have been the key to another World Series. Now, if Cashman brought Santana to the Bronx in 2008 would the Yankees still have missed the playoffs? Maybe, maybe not. But clearly the Yankees and Cashman had a plan. Save money in 2008 and spend in the winter of 2009, which, of course, they did when they signed CC Sabathia. It took CC less than one year to bring us to the promised land. Once again, I proved why I will never be asked to be the GM of a team! It certainly wasn't the first time, nor the last I would be wrong.

Kepner goes onto to explain that after this 2012 season, there are two pitching studs that will be free agents. If the Yankees save their money this winter (which they are clearly doing), on the horizon are both Cole Hamels of the Phillies and Matt Cain of the Giants, who will be free agents. We will not have to worry about trading Jesus Montero or either on of the boys, Banuelos or Betances. Look, there is no guarantee we get both those guys, or even one of them, but with cash is Cashman's hand next winter, I can't imagine he doesn't lure Hamels and Cain to the Bronx and make them an offer they can't refuse!

So Yankee fans let me give you two hypothetical situations... let me know which you would choose, if any:
  • The Yankees do nothing this winter, which would lead to a 90 win in 2012 and NO post season... but, with a bigger wallet for next winter to possibly sign studs like Cole Hamels and/or Matt Cain and we keep the farm system in place...or
  • The Yankees go out in the next week or two and bring in a Matt Garza, or Edwin Jackson, which gives us a 99 win 2012 season and another AL East crown and, guaranteed post season action. Keep in mind, the pitchers mentioned above will cost us, money and youngsters... Jesus Montero, Manny Banuelos and / or Dellin Betances. But again, in this scenerio season we are guaranteed to make the post-season, which of course means another possible World Series...
Remember, this is just scenerios... don't rip me in the comments section or on Twitter! I'm just trying to have fun! What do you think? What would you do?
