WHO WILL THE YANKEES CHOOSE? GARZA OR JACKSON

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.com, the Yankees are eager to snag a number 2 starter. Read HERE. Well, you don’t need to hear that from Jon Heyman, no disrespect Jon… just read what we link to almost every post. Back in November, it was the Yankees priority to snag a number 2 or 3 starter. Here’s the quote from Hal Steinbrenner mouth:

"Pitching is what we're going to be looking for.''

So, now it’s January 4th and nothing is new. The New York Yankees still want a top starter, but it’s crystal clear they are not willing to part with Jesus Montero, Manny Banuelos or Dellin Betances. We got it. We got it when the Athletics wanted them for Gio Gonzalez and we get it now when the Cubs keep asking about them for Matt Garza. It’s not going to happen, and to be honest with you, if they unload those kids at this point for the bottom of the barrel guys like Garza, we have a problem.

Let me re-phrase so I don’t sound disrespectful to Garza. Garza’s not a bottom of the barrel pitcher, that’s not what I mean. I’m not targeting his talent, I’m merely suggesting that the only reason we’re talking about Garza now is because the other guys are gone. Matt Garza is a good pitcher, but not Montero and Banuelos good. And if you look at the Free Agents out there, Edwin Jackson is a good free agent signing, but not at 5 years, $60 million. Scott Boras has balls for that demand for Jackson by the way…I don’t think even HE believes that. I will give his client this though, Jackson’s 27 years old and he eats innings and as they say sometimes in silly 80’s romance comedies, I could “learn to love” him in pinstripes. Plus, he may thrive as a New York Yankee. Did you know Jackson’s gone 950 innings in the past 5 seasons without a DL stint? I found that interesting. That says a lot. What also says a lot is that he’s not terribly consistant and that’s something the Yankees need to worry about. We don’t need another AJ Burnett consistant pitcher. Sure, Edwin’s young and he can develop into a true Yankees starter and favorite in pinstripes, but it’s clear to me, the Yankees need a sure thing, not a gamble.

So, if you had to pick, and it was this simple, who would you choose? Matt Garza or Edwin Jackson. Vote in our poll and we will do a post about it once the poll is concluded. Selfishly I hope nothing happens until the poll is finished. I’ve been burned twice with the Gio Gonzalez and Hiroki Kuroda polls… let’s see what happens this time… vote!
