Now, a month or so into the 2011 season, and looking at Jorge swing the bat brings a huge smile to my face. Granted he is only hitting alittle over .150, but I am telling you, he is about to move that average up, and up quickly! The first at bat he had against Verlander the other night was amazing. Before he hit that double, he was fouling off some serious gas by Verlander. That's important, because that means he's seeing the ball well and it's just a matter of time before he snaps out of it and into the zone. Verlander could not get 98 mph fastballs past Jorge, so what did he do? He dialed back and threw a 100mph fastball and Posada drilled it. I mean, Jorge smashed that fastball to the deepest part of center field! That at bat showed me one thing, Jorge’s swing is as quick as it has ever been in his career. His at bats this year have proven he is not getting beat on the fastball and to me, I say, the hits will come. And, you know he still has something in the tank because his power is still intact. 6 home runs in the first month is pretty darn good. Don't you agree?
Although, I think Jorge has embraced his role as the Yankees DH, it doesn’t mean he is 100% comfortable with it yet and who could blame him, he's been the backstop forever. During a season, a player has a certain way of preparing for games and a certain lifestyle they live. Jorge now only eats, sleeps, and breaths hitting. I am sure he had to make many lifestyle adjustments in his new role from his diet to his workouts. Jorge Posada, the full time DH for the New York Yankees is a work in progress but I feel he is on his way to one of his best statistical seasons of his career, I really believe that.
Look, is Jorge going to hit .300? Maybe or maybe not, (although, I think he will), but if he gets himself in the upper .270’s or higher and hits 25 or more home runs, you have to tip your cap to this guy and the Yankees have to bring him back. To me, that would be a productive season for an aging former catcher turned DH. Bottom line Jorge... we love you Bro!
