IT'S A GOOD TIME TO BE A YANKEE

"It's a good time to be a Yankee," said Yankee first baseman Greg Bird after Aaron Boone took the helm of the New York Yankees.  Now, following the potential signing of NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton, pending a clear physical expected on Sunday or Monday, does this mean it is a really good time to be a Yankee?  I say it's always a good time to be a Yankee, because being a Yankee means you are part of baseball history, a winning dynasty.  And we don't necessarily need a big A-Rod-like contract for it to be a good time to be a Yankee

Source: NBC Sports

"Adding Stanton, who led the majors in homers (59) and RBIs (132) last year, certainly helps the Yankees’ chances of winning the AL East for the first time since 2012 and getting to the World Series for the first time since winning it in 2009," reported the NY Post on Saturday.

Sure, it's an exciting venture to have the power and skill set of a Stanton on your team, but at what cost?  Apparently it's a cost that the Yankees are willing to take on and Kentucky Wildcat John Calipari thinks is worth it.

Source: Newsday

"Calipari met with GM Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone after the Wildcats beat Monmouth on Saturday at Madison Square Garden. 'We talked about Stanton. We’re going to get that one done,'’’ Calipari said.  I could care less what Calipari has to say about anything, quite frankly.  He needs to keep his nose out of anything but his own business, which is not always the tidiest of businesses.

Read all you want about Stanton, his fat contract of $295 million of which the Yankees will pay $265 million, and what he could potentially contribute to the 2018 Yankees.  You may agree with Greg Bird that it's a good time to be a Yankee, or you may think that it is always a good time to be a Yankee and we don't need Stanton to give us that impression.  Whatever you think, whatever you feel, own it.  Just like I do.  I think as long as the Yankees aren't going back down the path of paying big contracts for little return (ARod) and they are keeping their home grown, legacy players like Brett Gardner, then go for it.  But if the business plan is changing and the Yankees are going back to their old ways, then we are in trouble as a franchise.

It's a good time to be a Yankee yesterday, today and tomorrow with or without Giancarlo Stanton.  One man does not make a team.  A winning team has its leadership roles fulfilled, and works together for a common goal.  New blood can add to the team as long as the fixtures, the foundation remains intact and strategic plan stays on task.

THOUGHTS ON BOONE & THE YANKEES FROM A PASSIONATE YANKEE FAN

Photo: Charles Wenzelberg
Happy Sunday.

I mentioned the other day that there have been many views about new manager Aaron Boone.  The jury is still out for me because he really have no experience, and so I'd like a body of work to go on before I start judging.  But I did want to share this great note from a BYB reader and passionate Yankee fan.  The name of the reader will remain nameless.  Check it out:

Photo: Sporting News

"Hi Robert,

My feelings for tonight. I am not happy with Aaron Boone as manager. I feel if the Yankees win something this year, it’s our players.

Joe Girardi was so close, and I feel like he will get Girardi's credit... his work.  The fact that the Yankees planned on his demise even if we WON THE WORLD SERIES leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

Photo: Getty Images
I hope by March I’ll have an improved attitude, but I have never ever felt like this as a fan before. Nothing against Aaron Boone at all. Something doesn’t set right with me.  Where I live, not New York, it’s 3-1 against Boone. I’m sure if Yankees have a '96 or '98 season it will all be forgotten.

We shall see."

So how do you feel about Aaron Boone? How do you feel about how the Yankees handled Joe Girardi?  I will post your notes and emails to me if you can keep it short and sweet like this and give your passionate feeling.  I'm all ears.

HOW MIAMI FEELS ABOUT DEREK JETER NOW

I got killed by comments and emails about a week ago. I even received a threat when I printed THE GRINCH OF MIAMI referred to some of the terrible moves that I thought Derek Jeter was making as Marlins owner.  I was told I was too hard on him. I was told I was an a-hole, a joke, lame, idiotic... and the reality was, I never told anyone I hated Derek. I merely told the world that I was disappointed in the way he handled that Marlins team.  'It wasn't a great start' I thought, and that was before he ever traded away Giancarlo Stanton.

Rob Foldy / Miami Marlins via Getty Images
Today, many, many people are going after Derek Jeter for letting Stanton be traded to the Yankees. Now look, I would suggest that it had to be done if you were a Marlins owner, but because Stanton is (er, was) the franchise player of the Marlins, this trade hurts like hell if you're a Marlins fan.  Not Yelich... not Bour... Stanton was the franchise player.

"Without Stanton, why be a Marlins fan?"  That was a text sent from my buddy who lives a town over from Marlins Park. And I get it, but if you are a fan, you kind of have to move on.  I think it will be hard, and I feel for the Marlins fans very, very much, but over time, a true fan moves on...if you choose to be a Marlins fan after today.  But again... I get it...I would hurt just like many of the Miami fans are. I would be like if the Yankees traded Jeter away after they won it all in 1998 or something. It's a blow to the franchise and a blow to the fan base.

Photo: GQ
Fans get mad and fans are very angry with Derek Jeter right now.  But there is no conspiracy here. No collusion. Jeter didn't purposely become Marlins owner because he wanted to trade away their key pieces to the Yankees, his old team.  This was about Derek.  Derek knew he had to cut payroll or the franchise would eventually have to fold. That's one. Two, he also knew that he needed to make a name for himself behind the phrase, "this is business."  Well... sadly, for Miami Marlins fans... this was bad business in their view, and I wonder if they'll ever get over it. If I was a Marlins fan, I'd cancel my season tickets.  I'd be devastated and not patient enough to wait for the team to turn it around, but that's just me...

Photo: SI
Many thought Jeffery Loria was bad.  Some would suggest Jeter is worse.  But I would venture to say that you can probably blame Loria for the move Derek Jeter made today.  It's not totally Jeter's fault in many regards... he's cleaning up a Loria mess.

It's funny how we've now come full circle though.  Some of the same people that blasted me for my story from a week ago, are now acting as I did when I called Derek the Grinch.  Amazing.

I wanted to share the backlash Jeter is receiving. I also don't think it's very fair... some of this is hate folks... not necessary.  Strap in...

Nasty... and

Yikes.

I stand with Marlins fans today.  I feel for you and love your ballpark, love your players and appreciate you all as fans.  I'm sorry this happened to your team.  I hope it will soon turn around.  You will always have a Marlins supporter in me.

STANTON SATISFACTION OR HAVE WE BEEN MUSHED?

We've been mushed!
- Sonny, A Bronx Tale

Credit: Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports
That's the text I received from the great Mike O'Hara, actor, host, sports writer for BYB and even political personality.  The point is, his opinions matter to me, because he's a smart dude with emotion is an important part of analysis.  The Yankees got Giancarlo Stanton today. Immediately he texted me that, and for a moment, not knowing who the Yankees gave up, I felt the same way at that very moment.

If you don't know what that phrase means... let me explain. In a Bronx Tale, whenever the gangsters were trying to place bets, if Eddie Mush was around, they pretty much knew they'd lose if they bet the same as he, and so, they'd already know they were mushed before the race was done or the dice was thrown.  And if you are a true blue Yankee fan, you felt that IMMEDIATLEY... at lease Mike and I did.   Now that the details are slowing coming out about "Stanton to the Yankees", let's see how we feel later today or by Sunday.

Mandatory Credit: Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports
Right now it can confirmed that the Yankees and Marlins have made a deal. Top baseball insiders reported that. The Yankees get Stanton and from what we know... Starlin Castro will go to Miami to be the starting second baseman and replace Dee Gordon who was just traded to the Mariners.

" A source told The Post that Starlin Castro and prospects, though not top ones, make up most of the return. Neither team had announced a deal as of early Saturday morning, possibly because a physical review was still needed and that would not be a rubber stamp with Stanton, who has had injury problems throughout his career. "

MLB.com writes:

"While the Marlins are expected to seek several higher-level prospects in any potential deal, second baseman Starlin Castro's name has surfaced in negotiations. The 27-year-old Castro has two years and approximately $23.7 million remaining on his contract."

And I could go on and on and it's all similar. Reality is, we don't know who these prospects are yet.  We also don't know what the Yankees are paying.

Photo: USA Today
But I do find this interesting... there are mixed feelings about Stanton on the Yankees.  Not the person himself, but what he does to the dynamic of the clubhouse, worries about injury, AND, a lot of worry about who the Yankees give up prospect-wise.

Ultimately this could be an amazing thing for the Yankees and I think we all need to sit back and wait and see.  Many are satisfied.  Stanton, Sanchez, Judge in the same lineup? Are you kidding? Yet many feel that we've been mushed.  I will wait to give my final thoughts on the deal.  I wanna see what the Yanks are giving up on the prospect front.

Steve Mitchell/USA TODAY Sports
And finally, I have to say... I feel horribly for the Miami Marlins fans.  This is a blow to that franchise.  Yes, they are in a building year and yes they are trying to cut payroll... but Stanton was a franchise player, and now, they lose a chunk in Miami.  This comment says it all...

I feel bad for the Marlins fans. I visited this summer. I loved the ballpark, I loved the fans, and I will tell you something significant... the Marlins fans LOVED Giancarlo Stanton. It's a sad, sad day for them.

I hope they can get past it.

More to come... stay tuned...

STANTON SWEEPSTAKES INSANITY

Source: Matt Hazlett/Getty Images North America
It's been unbelievable.  I'm hearing progress is being made.  I'm hearing it's 'virtually done' by baseball insiders, and I am happy to say that I have a source too these days.  Am I an insider? Never claimed to be, but man it's fun to see all the banter and give my thoughts and my findings.  I just got off text with my guy who's pretty much been up all night, even when I went to bed, and this is my first text of the day in relation to this possible 'Stanton to the Yankees' deal:

Now word of caution. The names you read may not ultimately be the names dealt. Furthermore... the Yankees aren't giving away 15 guys for Giancarlo Stanton, that would be weird and bad negotiation.

Thirdly... All indications are Starlin Castro is definitely part of this deal and pretty much the main name since the get-go. It doesn't appear that anything has changed on that front.

Source: Elsa/Getty Images North America
And finally... prospects.  I know, you don't want to hear it, but I can tell you that the name Miguel Andujar was mentioned to me at least twice as a player that was either interested in by the Marlins, or floated by the Yankees.  Can't confirm 100%, but I'm putting it out there pretty much to show just how insane this whole thing has been.  I have also been told that "some prospect talk" has happened... lower level is what is being hinted to me.  I don't know what that means.

Source: Mark Brown/Getty Images North America
My thoughts on all of this is simple;  For 1... we don't need Giancarlo Stanton.  We just don't. But the Yankees and Marlins will now be forever connected with Jeter at the helm.

Also, there's a true respect here between the two teams.  No team is going to try and swindle the other, and that's why if this trade can be worked out, it will be fair and respectful to both teams. Cash and Jeet want this to work.  Giancarlo has a strong urge to come to New York.  But it's like a combination puzzle.

Photo: Getty Images
Cashman has to worry about luxury tax, worry about not giving up too much, yet that he's collected over the last 2 years, but enough where Jeter is satisfied and doesn't feel robbed.  I think that's why a guy like Jacoby Ellsbury may be off the table. I think that's why the names are constantly changing.

And there's another component.  The LA Dodgers are NOT out of it by any means.  Stanton is from Cali and has no problem going there.  The Dodgers have the pieces to move for Stanton, so don't count them out.  But right now, it's the Yankees and Marlins talking closely and often.

I urge you all to stay patient, be respectful to each other as these rumors fly, and understand that in this whole 'insider' garbage, there is a system of news gathering.  It's not perfect by any means, and I'm learning that quickly and have some sympathy for the Olneys and Heymans of the world today... this is tough to nail down.  But I am merely suggesting... be cautious what you read, be respectful as to what's coming out, and if you're a Yankee fan who wants Stanton... keep your fingers crossed...

Photo: Getty Images
Finally, I say this... what I am gathering is just like every other insider. The difference is I'm not trying to be right here.  What I mean is, I'm trying to provide you the info I am getting, and letting you react.  I am NOT trying to be first and I am not a professional insider to be 100% right with the info I provide.  I'm doing the best I can with the resources I have, and with the lack of experience I'm offering in this realm. That being said... it's damn exciting...

This could be big.

THE STANTON REJECTION TOUR

Photo: SI
Just to keep everyone up to date on everything going on in Giancarlo Stanton's world. He's starting to reject teams... and he hasn't rejected the Yankees yet.

We wrote ONE OF STANTON'S "GREEN LIGHT" TEAMS? THE YANKEES this morning. Tonight... some updates on what teams Stanton rejected. Check out some of these tweets:

And so, both the Cardinals and the Giants were teams he originally were connected to.  Now suddenly no.  Why? And what team will it be?

ESPN has this...

Michael Owen Baker/Associated Press
"While the Los Angeles Dodgers have been mentioned as the inevitable fallback option if the Marlins are unable to trade Stanton, they're not the only big-market glamour team that intrigues the National League MVP.

A source familiar with the Stanton trade talks told ESPN's Jerry Crasnick that the New York Yankees are among Stanton's preferred destinations and that he might be open to waiving his blanket no-trade clause to go to the Bronx."

And Heyman has this now....

And that's where we are.

Carry on...

Be Read. Get Known.

BOMBSHELL: OHTANI CHOOSES!

No one, and I mean NO ONE saw this coming.

Photo: Getty Images
I mean look... Shohei Ohtani wanted a smaller market and I guess he wanted the West Coast and he got it, with a not-so-great team in the Los Angeles Angels.  That's right. And when I say not-so-great... they're fine, 80 wins last year and no doubt Ohtani will help with that, but I didn't expect it.  No one saw this coming.

Anyway, the New York Times writes:

Kyodo News | Associated Press
"It’s official: Shohei Ohtani, the so-called Babe Ruth of Japan, will take up his new life in the United States as a member of the Los Angeles Angels.

After meeting face to face with seven major league teams, but not, surprisingly, the Yankees, Ohtani, the star pitcher and designated hitter of the Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan, announced on Friday that he had settled on the Angels, a big-market club on the West Coast. He will now set about trying to become baseball’s first two-way star since the player who inspired his nickname.

For a $20 million posting fee, a fairly modest bonus and a minimum-salary contract in 2018, the Angels get a 23-year-old player who is one year removed from being named the most valuable player of Japan’s Pacific League. The 6-foot-3, left-handed batter and right-handed pitcher gave up millions of dollars to come to the United States now instead of in two years, when he would have been a true free agent and received a contract most likely to have topped $100 million."

So, after this, the first thing my 15 year old asked me is when we can get tickets to the Bronx to see the Yanks play the Angels.

I'm on it kid... I'm on it.

ONE OF STANTON'S "GREEN LIGHT" TEAMS? THE YANKEES

Do we need Giancarlo Stanton? Nope, but man oh man could you imagine Aaron Judge and Stanton roaming the same outfield? The New York Daily News writes:

Source: Tim Bradbury/Getty Images North America
"According to a report, the Marlins slugger named the Yankees among three other teams he’d be willing to accept a trade. The 2017 NL home run king reportedly went so far as to even say he is “inclined” to accept a move to the Bronx.

Despite having an exorbitant price tag, the Yankees are apparently “kicking the tires” on Stanton, whom Marlins owner Derek Jeter has been actively shopping since taking over the strapped franchise.

Source: Joe Skipper/Getty Images North America
The other teams Stanton, 28, will now approve a trade to are the Dodgers, Cubs and Astros. He took meetings with both the Giants and Cardinals last week in Los Angeles, and a deal is in place with both teams, but on Thursday it came out that the reigning NL MVP does not want to join either team."

Look, that is really all that's coming out of this report.  So don't go nuts.  But it is interesting that this guy has a no-trade clause and it's suddenly more relaxed when it comes to certain teams.  I love that the Yankees are on the "green light" list, but I worry about the Yankees willing to trade away the great prospects we have to make it happen.

It will be interesting to see... stay tuned...

#BYB TROLL PATROL

As you all know, I'm sick of trolls.  I love intelligent dialog. I hate when geniuses have it all figured out, don't debate me, but rather name call, treat me like I'm 16 and basically act like I'm the one who has it all wrong. IT'S OPINION here at BYB. We don't claim to always be right. We are trying to spark spirited debate and have good, solid conversation. That's it.

BYB was built on love.  We have many, many readers who have intelligent give and take and we never hate. Instead, we have a banter, agree... disagree and then we move on.  In the end, there's a respect for each other.  Bottom line, I like respect.

Meet Bonenfant Fred. Clearly not his real name, because Hell, why use your real name when you troll people? It's stupid. Remember Nick? He's below...

We shared his genius intelligence in STANDING UP TO TROLLS & LOVIN' THE #BYBHUB. Don't worry, we're past him. On to a new one...

Bonenfant Fred didn't like Bleeding Yankee Blue's controversial piece THE GRINCH OF MIAMI starring his boyfriend, Derek Jeter.

And so, in the dead of night, he commented this.  I noticed... and I followed up with him.

And so. Once again, it's really pathetic that know-it-all readers don't try to engage in a healthy way.  Instead, they gotta hate, and as I have told many of you... I'm tired of it. And so, I will call every single troll out on BYB from now on.

Sure, I had some hard opinions on Derek Jeter and how he's dealing with Miami. But 2 things are at play here. For 1, I am not a hater. 2... I report accurately. I have integrity.... and I will always give you the correct story and NEVER LIE.

Bonenfant Fred? He's not that bright.  He should delete his account...just like our pal Nick did.

Happy Friday.

CARLOS BELTRAN'S A CLASS ACT

Photo: AP Photo
I was very impressed when I read that Carlos Beltran pretty much endorsed Aaron Boone to be the Yankees manager.  No sour grapes, jealousy, none of that.

Newsday's Neil Best writes:

Photo: Newsday
"Carlos Beltran technically lost the Yankees manager race to Aaron Boone, but he endorsed the team’s decision, citing Boone’s personality, baseball knowledge and family pedigree.

'He’s going to do a good job for them, definitely,' Beltran, a former Met and Yankee, said on Tuesday at Barclays Center before accepting the Hope Award from Sports Illustrated for his work in his native Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.

'I personally know him and I wish him the best. I just hope he puts together a good group of coaches to help him out and make decisions . . . There is a high standard about being the Yankee manager. After being able to miss the World Series by one game [last season], fans are expecting a lot of positive things, which is great. It’s a good challenge for a manager.'"

I also found something interesting in that piece.  Boone's 44 and Beltran is 40.

I actually thought Boone was younger... he looks younger... inexperienced.... all of that.  I was rooting for Beltran for the Manager gig. I still don't know how I feel about Boone.  I guess the jury is still out.

I will say this... we are getting a lot of email and comments from Yankee fans not too thrilled about the pick.  I will post a very well written letter about Boone sometime between tomorrow and Sunday about it from a fan. It's a great comment and something worth reporting.  The person's name will be held back, but you gotta read that letter.  It's coming, promise.

Anyway... Beltran. Class Act! Seriously.

DEE GORDON JUST GOT MOVED

Source: Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images North America
Incredible what's going on down there in Florida with the Marlins.  Now comes word that Dee Gordon has been traded.  That comes from Ken Rosenthal who I guess was reporting from Jim Bowden at Sirius/XM.  Check it out:

Now that's a good player the Marlins just gave up.

In return the Marlins get righty pitcher Nick Neidert.

I wonder if Jeter will still try and move Stanton.  I also wonder just how thrilled the Marlins fans feel about all this.

Geez.

Now many Yankee fans will read this and say "who cares".  To that I say, educate yourself.  There are lot of trades and names in prospect world you may not know or be interested in, but reality is... get to know all these guys.  Baseball has a ton of them, and it's just cool and interesting to try and keep up with the trades and these young players.

Enjoy.
