CARLOS RODON HAS BECOME A TRUE YANKEE LEADER

Carlos Rodón’s Yankee story has been nothing short of a redemption tour. When he first landed in the Bronx, the lefty looked like he couldn’t throw a strike if the strike zone was the size of Yankee Stadium. But fast-forward to now, and he’s turned into exactly what the Yankees paid for: an ace with bite on the mound and leadership in the clubhouse.

That transformation makes it fitting that Rodón is the Yankees’ 2025 nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, baseball’s annual honor recognizing players who go above and beyond—both on the field and in the community.

Together with his wife, Ashley, Rodón launched the Rodón Foundation, which supports couples navigating pregnancy complications and infertility. One of their biggest initiatives is the “Willow Grant,” named for their daughter, which provides $10,000 to $20,000 annually to 25 couples still fighting for their dream of starting a family after enduring miscarriages or pregnancy loss.

And it’s not just check-writing philanthropy—Rodón also rolls up his sleeves. Back in June, he volunteered at Bottomless Closet in New York City, an organization that helps women in difficult financial situations prepare to enter the workforce.

The Yankees have a strong track record with this award: Aaron Judge brought it home in 2023, Derek Jeter in 2009, while Ron Guidry and Don Baylor earned the honor back in the mid-80s. Rodón now carries that torch, showing he’s not just a comeback story on the mound—he’s the kind of player Clemente himself would have been proud of.

I have always believed that Rodon would be a stud in the Bronx, and I am thrilled to see that he is having such a great personal season but now getting this nod. It's refreshing.

CARLOS CARRASCO & HIS "BIG CHANCE"

Carlos Carrasco knows exactly what this moment means. The veteran right-hander isn’t just taking the mound for the Yankees—he’s seizing a golden chance to prove he’s still got it.

“This is a big chance for me...“I just have to go out there and pitch the same way I did in spring training. Compete every pitch, every out and inning, and go from there.”

That’s the mindset of a guy who’s been through it all—injuries, struggles, even a battle with cancer. And yet, here he is, gearing up for his first start in pinstripes and his second appearance overall since inking a minor league deal and turning heads in spring training (1-0, 1.69 ERA). Sure, his lone relief outing this season was a forgettable one (13.50 ERA), but Carrasco is built for comebacks. After a rough 2023 with Cleveland (3-10, 5.64 ERA), he’s looking to bounce back in a big way. This is a guy who won the Roberto Clemente Award and AL Comeback Player of the Year in 2019 after returning from a midseason cancer diagnosis. Adversity? He eats it for breakfast.

And now, he’s up against Merrill Kelly (1-0, 1.69 ERA) in today's series finale as the Yankees try to avoid a sweep in Arizona. No pressure, right?

Of course, Carrasco isn’t the only one stepping into the spotlight. With Gerrit Cole sidelined, the Yankees are relying on Carrasco and rookie Will Warren to help hold the rotation together. As Empire Sports Media put it:

"Instead of Cole vs. an opposing ace, it’s now Will Warren and 38-year-old Carlos Carrasco being tossed into the fire. Warren has shown flashes of potential, but he’s also a rookie getting his first taste of early-season big-league pressure. That learning curve is steep, especially against elite offenses. He struggled considerably in a small sample in 2024."

Look, nobody said this was going to be easy. But opportunity doesn’t knock—it kicks the door down, and Carrasco and Warren have a chance to prove they belong.

VOTE FOR JOSE TREVINO!

Quick note.

Jose Trevino is up for getting the Roberto Clemente award! As you may have read from MLB...

"The Roberto Clemente Award is bestowed annually to the player who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

Every year, each MLB Club nominates a player to be considered for the Award in tribute to Clemente's achievements and character. This year's list of nominees features players whose various community and philanthropic activities have focused on important issues ranging from awareness & fundraising to support those with cancer and other illnesses or special needs, education for young people, natural disaster relief, outreach to underserved children & communities in the United States and abroad, and more."

As we all know, Trevino has come to the Yankees and have given them everything they need by going above and beyond as a Yankee catcher and team leader. We need to give back to him as a fan. Do the right thing, check out this link, and VOTE for Trevino!!!

TALKING TOPPS: A NEW SERIES

I am happy to present a new series at Bleeding Yankee Blue. In coordination with Topps Card Company, whenever they send us new info on new baseball cards, we'll post the story about it here.

This makes me very happy considering I have been such an avid card collector all my life and so, it's an honor to do this with Topps.

We'll do this from time to time. We begin today.  Enjoy this, I know I will!

-Casey

From Topps:

"Every time baseball fans open a pack of cards, they search for the rookie cards.

Historically, these have been the most popular cards during a player’s career – and none are more exciting than their Topps rookie card. Topps has been creating an annual release of baseball cards since 1952 (with 1951 meant for playing a game) and have made rookie cards for so many amazing players including Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Eddie Mathews, Nolan Ryan, Roberto Clemente, Sandy Koufax, Ken Griffey Jr., Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, Derek Jeter, Mike Trout, Kris Bryant and so many more.
This year’s cards installment of Topps Baseball Series 1 has an impressive group of youngsters who get their rookie cards starting with 2017 Topps Baseball Series 1, which comes out on Feb. 1. The group of 30 players getting rookie cards in the first release of 2017 feature recent first-round draft picks, international stars and future stand outs.

Courtesy: Topps
Some of the bigger rookie cards in the set include Dansby Swanson (2015 No. 1 Draft Pick), Yoan Moncada (Cuban star), Alex Bregman (2015 No. 2 Draft Pick), Aaron Judge (2013 first-round pick), Andrew Benintendi (2015 first-round pick), and David Dahl (2012 first-round pick).

Of course, that doesn’t mean you can sleep on the other rookies. You just never know when a youngster is going to break out and become a huge star.

Players who were traded in the offseason (see: Moncada) are featured on a card with their original team. Rookie cards with their new teams will be in 2017 Topps Update Series Baseball, which comes out in October.

THE YANKEES HAVE TO LEAP 'FENCES' IN 2017

Source: Wall Street Journal
Saturday's snowy day in the Northeast lead to not only an early morning spin class but a trip to the movies with a good friend and Yankee fan.  We screened the movie Fences starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, which depicts a series of impactful scenes, which include a juxtaposition between baseball and the decisions we make in life.  The story is set in the 1950s as a "monologue-heavy drama starring Washington as flawed patriarch Troy Maxson, a Pittsburgh garbage collector and former Negro League ballplayer, and Davis as Troy’s wife and homemaker Rose," reports the LA Times.

According to the screenplay, "Troy was an excellent player in Negro league baseball in his younger days and continued practicing while in prison for an accidental murder he had committed during a robbery. Because the color barrier had not yet been broken in Major League Baseball, Troy was unable to get into that league to make good money or to save for the future."  It is no wonder why Troy is bitter and often uses the game of baseball to communicate life's challenges and failures or perhaps his own to his friends and family.

It is interesting to drill down to the basics of the game of baseball from its complicated and often complex statistics today to see how Denzel's character calls out parts of his life in simple terms like balls, strikes, stolen bases and home runs he blasted over the fences of the parks where he played.  I've known teachers and even leaders to use the language of baseball in their classes in an effort to better engage students in the learning and even Jimmy Fallon was able to teach math through his passion for the Boston Red Sox in the hit movie Fever Pitch.

Photo: MLB.com
I bring this all to light because as I watched Fences today, I couldn't help but think about how far we have come with regards to baseball and its impact on our life over the years.  It was so nostalgic to be listening to Washington, through his character Troy, talk passionately about Pittsburgh's Roberto Clemente and his son chime into the conversation with Dodger great Sandy Koufax all in the present tense.  Troy also talked about blasting home runs off of Negro League pitcher Satchel Paige and how baseball made you strong.

Through a series of narratives, Troy often uses baseball as a communication outlet for his decisions in life, his discipline of his high school-aged son and the ability he has to conquer death.  "Death ain't nothing but a fastball on the outside corner," he said.

Source: CBS Sports
As we enter this new year, it is important to note where we have come and where we are headed and the fences we have to jump over along the way.  We can all agree that the Yankees have a number of fences to leap over in 2017 including the barrier they have had in starting pitching and what I like to call long-distance hitting.  And by this I don't just mean the home run, I mean having enduring situational hitting throughout season, not just in short stints.  I know we are hopeful that Yankees are successful in leaping over their series of fences, but the reality is that much like Troy, we may just not be strong enough to face them all- at least this year.

MY FIVE FAVORITE BALLPARKS!

A friend of mine posted a picture of herself sitting happily on the Budweiser Roof Deck in Fenway Park and I immediately got ballpark envy.  Kenny Chesney recorded a song this summer called “When I See This Bar” and one of the lines that I just love is “Pieces of my past slowly slip away, but time just stands still when I walk in this place.” That’s how I feel about ballparks.  They carry with them memories and feelings of games, players and family.  They are monuments to the games and records set over the years.  They are our living rooms, dining rooms and kitchens.  They are our homes, they are our fields of dreams, and they witness the magic of the games of yesterday, today and tomorrow.  You see, ballparks have their own attitudes, their own personalities and their own special flare.  And they are all on display for the spectator who walks through the tunnel that leads to the green fields of America’s pastime.  They are our ballparks and I have my five favs!

My disclaimer is of course that Yankee Stadium is my favorite ballpark because it is home to the best team in the world- The New York Yankees.  So outside of Yankee Stadium, there are my “other” favorites who are forever in my head, give me chills and make me happy to be a baseball fan.

My #1 Favorite
Wrigley Field, Chicago, circa 1914 (formerly Weeghman Park and Cubs Park)

The ivy-filled outfield, roof top views and daytime games make Wrigley Field a unique place to watch a game.  The last time the Cubs were in the World Series was 1945, but fans far and wide continue to fill the ballpark every season, believing that the curse of the goat will be broken and the Cubbies will win the Series.  Wrigley has always been a “friendly to hitters ballpark”, particularly to sluggers Ernie Banks who hit 512 homers with the Cubs and of course Sammy Sosa who slammed 60 or more homeruns in three different seasons.

What’s special?  The Cubs fly a flag on the center field scoreboard after each game- white means the Cubs won and blue means they lost.  And until August 8, 1988, Wrigley Field only hosted day games because the lights were never installed following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The then owner donated the money earmarked for the stadium lights to the war effort.  Wrigley Field is vintage as the second oldest ballpark in baseball and it is must see for baseball fans.

My #2  Favorite
Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, MD circa 1992

The statues memorializing the best Oriole players of all time, the village like atmosphere and the proximity of the seats to the action on the field make Camden Yards an incredible experience for fans old and young.  The greatest moment at Camden Yards has to be September 6, 1995 when Cal Ripken, Jr. played his 2131 consecutive game breaking the Iron Horse, Lou Gehrig’s all-time record.

Screaming Earl Weaver still echoes the walls of the beautiful ballpark, a monument to the greats of the game in Jim Palmer, Frank Robinson and I will even throw in our very own broadcaster Ken Singleton.  Camden Yards quickly became the template for the construction of the new ballparks built over the last twenty years including our very own Yankee Stadium.  You feel like you are on the field, in the middle of the action, with the way the seats are positioned.  And a Natty Boh brew is never far away with the bars and pubs affixed around the interior of the ballpark.  Oriole Park at Camden Yards, a fun place to watch a game and tie one on with friends.

My #3 Favorite
PNC Park, Pittsburgh, PA circa 2001

Even though I relished the visit I made to Three Rivers Stadium back in the late 90s, PNC Park in Pittsburgh is absolutely beautiful with the bridges and rivers in the outfield and the city skyline overseeing the architecture of the ballpark.  PNC Park is a great stop on fans’ ballpark tours across the country.

The irregularly shaped field immortalizes its most famous player, Roberto Clemente with an outfield wall that rises up 21 feet behind right field.  The urban-based venue welcomes pedestrians walking to the ballpark from the Clemente Bridge, which is closed to vehicular traffic on game days.  It is also a very intimate ballpark with the highest seat just 88 feet from the field giving every fan a great view of the action.

My #4 Favorite
Royals Stadium, Kansas City, MO, (also known as Kauffman Stadium) circa 1973

I have always wanted to go this park.  I really don’t know why because so many people complain about it, but I have to say, I have always been attracted to the fountains in the outfield, the crown scoreboard in center field and just the team itself who really gave us a run for our money in the seventies and eighties.  I am a George Brett fan- there I have said it.

And I am still a George Brett fan following last year’s All Star Game hosted by Royals Stadium.  There is something regal about the 40 year-old ballpark, it’s classy and clean from my vantage point- my living room couch, but truthfully, the newly integrated Outfield Experience gives fans new and exciting vantage points to view the game including new outfield box seats next to the vintage fountains and a trendy bar called the Miller Light Fountain Bar.  The stadium outfield also has the popular Pepsi Porch and Sonic Slam standing room area nearby the fountains.  It’s a party at Royals Stadium, with lots to see and experience.

My #5 Favorite
Fenway Park, Boston, MA

The only home of the Boston Red Sox, the oldest ball park in baseball and the most historic, most exhilarating place to watch a game. Fenway Park is in a word electric.  Even if you are not a Red Sox fan, like me, you can quickly become a Fenway fan when to step into the streets surrounding the vintage ball park.  It’s a party in the streets every time the Sox are home as the vicinity around the stadium is closed off to non-gamers and ticket holders are greeted by turnstiles in the streets about an hour and half before game time.

The sights and sounds of good ‘ol American baseball reign loud and clear in the streets of Yawkey and Ted Williams Way.  The Ted Williams statue stands proudly behind the infamous Green Monster and the old ticket booths add to the charm of the ball field.  And if you are lucky enough to score tickets on the Monsta, you will see the most amazing view of the game in all of baseball.  You may also spy the only red seat in the park- a dedication to Ted Williams’ last homerun in Fenway and bellow the eighth inning rendition of Sweet Caroline.  Fenway is the place to be all summer long in Boston.

So, that’s my five favs!  I am sure you have your own favs- share them with us!  Those creaky and shiny stadiums all have a story- and there is no better story than the ones you create with your family and friends at the ballpark.

THE FULL POSADA INTERVIEW

To make life easier, I have compiled both Parts 1 & 2 of the interview Bleeding Yankee Blue conducted with Jorge & Laura Posada for our audience.  It's easier to read, it's in one place and easier to share with friends. Once again, a special Thank you to the Posadas. --Casey

BYB: Laura, Bleeding Yankee Blue have been huge fans of the Posada family.  Many were sad once Jorge retired. That being said, you've been great keeping us in the loop since his retirement through social networks.  Tell our audience, what is a typical day is like in the Posada house these days?

Laura Posada: Right now we are already on summer break.  We take it easy in the summer and focus on outdoor activities.  Jorge takes our son to baseball and Paulina plays softball.  We're also taking a trip to Italy which will be Jorge's first visit, so he's looking forward to it.  Around the house, it’s great to have him!  He has become a BBQ expert and surprises us with his grilling skills!

BYB: Bleeding Yankee Blue is geared toward the New York Yankees and family.  What makes a family successful to you?

Laura: I've always said that families need to work as a team.  It is very important to learn how to work together and learn about each other's strengths and weaknesses in order to support each other to achieve their dreams.  Selfishness never works to benefit the family unit.  Finally, as parents, we need to teach our children by example!

BYB: My 10 year is passionate about baseball. In a lot of ways, he reminds me of you Jorge. What phrase could you tell my son to keep him inspired on the baseball field, even when he may have a discouraging day at the plate?

Jorge Posada: I would always say "Grind it!"

BYB: My son asked me to also ask you "What made Mr. Posada want to become a catcher?"

Jorge: I loved Thurman Munson and he inspired me with his actions on and off the field.  I wanted to model my career after him and of course Yogi Berra.

BYB: Laura, What makes your marriage with Jorge work so well?

Laura: I think we respect and support each other even though we might not agree on everything.  It also helps that we share the same interests regarding health and fitness. We understand the things in life that are really important to us; Love,  family and health and we live life to the fullest.

BYB: Laura, you obviously love Jorge home with the family, but what if the Miami Marlins or the Los Angeles Dodgers called one day to interview Jorge as a new manager, is that a good or bad thing?

Laura: I have always supported him in his baseball career and I think it would be his decision.  In life, you need to be content with your choices and if he feels ready then let's play ball!

BYB: OK, You and Jorge can have a choice of 3 couples to have dinner with, living or dead in baseball and other.  Who would those couples be? And yes, my wife and I are available...

Laura: I think we should definitely make it happen, but just for fun, I'll give you 3 others.  I would say Thurman Munson and his lovely wife Diana, Roberto Clemente and his wife Vera and Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe.

BYB: We have to know... How did you and Jorge meet?

Laura: We met when we were teenagers on a baseball field where he was the umpire for my softball game.  After the game ended, we both went our separate ways until we met again at a restaurant in Puerto Rico.  After a mutual friend introduced us, he remembered he had met me at the softball game and told his roommate I was the girl he wanted to marry.

BYB: Tell our audience your favorite moment of Jorge as a New York Yankee?

Laura: Honestly, it was an honor for me to watch him grow as baseball player every year and in many different situations.  However, I think for me, the most special moment was his last year.  Even though he struggled, it was amazing for me to see the love and support that his fans continued to give him every single time he stepped out on the field.  It gave me chills to hear the stadium cheer as they did for Jorge with their “Hip Hip Jorge!”

BYB: Personally, my favorite moment of Jorge's was him clinching his fists during the 2003 ALCS tying the game with a double against Pedro Martinez. Where were you when it happened?

Laura: Yes, I was right there and that was an Epic moment!  Getting a hit off Pedro in 2003 was not an easy task and due to the history of "love" between them, it just made it a little sweeter!  As a spectator, you could feel the electricity in your body when he got that double.

BYB: Laura, please tell us some of the projects you are working on now and where our audience can get more information about them and you!

Laura: Right now, the second season of my show Manual de Supervivencia is airing in South America on Utilisma which is part of the Fox Family.  Soon it will also start airing in the US market.

BYB: Jorge, Who did you have the best chemistry with when it came to your battery mate in all your years as a catcher?

Jorge: My definite best was Andy Pettitte.  I also enjoyed Roger Clemens, David Wells and CC Sabathia, of course.

BYB: Jorge, how do you feel about the phrase "Cour Four" describing you, Jeet, Mariano and Andy?

Jorge: It's an honor because they are my brothers.  We grew up together and spending so many years as teammates is something I will never forget.

BYB: We've stated here how we'd love you to be a personality on YES, maybe even ave your own show. Would you ever consider pitching something like that? Hey, I'll help you with a treatment, what do you say?

Laura: I have never explored that possibility, but if you have an idea don't be shy...

BYB: Finally. I know you've read Bleeding Yankee Blue, and you also know I'm a dad who does this with a bunch of smart Yankee fans and writers.  First, what do you think of BYB?  Secondly, how can we improve?

Laura: I think you do an amazing job with your pieces.  You are honest and you keep things  real!  I know it is sometimes difficult to find the inspiration to put into words exactly what your thoughts are, but if you just start writing from your heart the words will flow!

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: JORGE & LAURA POSADA: PART 1

There’s something that I’ve wanted to do for a long, long time.  But in the world of family and life… things get away from you.  You know how long this Bleeding Yankee Blue thing has been going on, right?  Since September 14, 2010 if you need a reference point.  Since then, we’ve built a pretty smart audience, men and women joining a conversation about the Yankees, family and life.  In other words, "Life... Love... Yankees", our slogan of 2013.  We’re a family here and while you are not my “real” family, it sure is good to know you’re there for each other after a long day. We chat with each other. we bounce ideas off each other and we even fight… like a real family here at BYB.

That being said, I’m constantly thinking… “What would my audience really love to read today?” Sure, not every idea we come up with is as terrific as it was in my mind, but you still support us knowing that we’re out there trying to keep you engaged daily.  After all, I can honestly say that with the hard work of the BYB staff, we have cranked out more solid material on a daily basis than any other Yankee website or blog out there. And by the way... that's a fact!  But why do we do it you ask? Because we’re Yankee fans… we’re real, like you.  So, about 9 months ago… I started my pursuit of my of my favorite couples that I’ve never actually met… but truth be told, they are "friends in my head."

Enter... the Posadas.  Now, I have mad skills when it comes to human observation and I look at Jorge and Laura and know they are solid people and solid parents.  They have the make up for the perfect family formula. As Jorge would say, “Grind it” and  that means get out there, shoot for the stars and give it your all.  That’s not just a baseball thing, that’s a life thing.  It’s also something that we all should subscribe to.  From the outside looking in, I know these 2 are strong individuals with a positive makeup for their family… and it makes me smile knowing that that is still happening in today’s society, especially with the constant hustle and bustle, the video games, the hectic schedules… in the end, you need to make time for your family and they do that!  How do I know? I know.  It’s family first... it's the Posadas after all!

So, I’m thrilled to share with you what will be a 2 part interview with one of our favorite Yankee families… the Posada Family.  Laura and Jorge, thank you for taking the time to chat with Bleeding Yankee Blue.  You are great people and keep doing what your doing because we approve!

To our audience, Part 1 will run today.  Part 2 will run on July 4th.  2 big days for 2 great people. So, without further ado… I bring you the Posada Family. Enjoy this… I certainly did!

No... seriously, we're available!  Anyway. There are so many more great moments in this interview with the Posadas, including... Did you know how Laura and Jorge met? I do and you will too next week.  On July 4th, we will release Part 2 of our interview with Laura and Jorge and you will find out some great nuggets that you never new before, including how Jorge REALLY feels about the phrase CORE FOUR!

Look for it next week. In the meantime, reach out and let Laura know just how much you loved hearing from them in our Bleeding Yankee Blue interview! Laura's twitter is @DLauraPosada.

Laura and Jorge... thanks again, from all of us here at Bleeding Yankee Blue!
