BELIEVE IN YOURSELF & YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING
I root for the underdog and with the Academy Awards on tonight and some of the most incredible talent for supporting actress out there, it was refreshing to see Lupita Nyong'o win. It was unexpected. It was shocking... it was well-deserved and triumphant.
The underdog. Rudy Ruettiger. Jim Abbott. Doug Flutie. Michael Oher. Jeremy Lin. The 1969 New York Mets. The 1996 New York Yankees. Lupita Nyong'o.
The believers. The ones you least expect, but the ones you never forget.
I was inspired tonight watching Lupita Nyong'o. You should be too. She worked hard, she won big...
Go out and do something big and never quit! Believe you will... and you can.
Congrats in advance...

ROOTING FOR THE BELIEVER
I am a father who has a love for my family so great, I just want to see my children achieving big things in their lives. I like to see my kids “win” and bringing home the trophy, but sometimes that doesn’t happen. Hey, that’s life. Sure, at that point kids, and even adults, want to quit. They become frustrated. They believe they "Can't." But it’s the believer that steps back and says, “You know what, next time I WILL win.” To me, they’ve won already because they know they CAN, it just may be that that time, they didn’t.
Believing is half the battle. Anyone that has read Bleeding Yankee Blue since the beginning knows that I root for the believer. I root for the underdog, because, quite honestly, I believe that if they are there, they have a chance. There are so many athletes in history that may not been the obvious choice for a champion, but they were there and sometimes they won it all. I applaud that. You can go through history and list dozens. But there are a few that stick out in my mind, just because of what I remember, and the feeling I felt for those athletes when they were in the big moment. They knew they could achieve victory... you could see it in their eyes.
And even if the doubters come out and say, "Well, he'll never be great", let me explain something to those people; Ty, or Jorge or anyone with a goal, doesn't hear you. Ty’s ready to do great things for the Yankees, because they took a chance on him. He’s refused to fail. Desire, ability, heart… the will to win. The will to "want it." Ty gets it.
Anna gets knocked down but he gets back up. Now look… No one knows what will happen with this kid and the Yankees. The Yanks just signed Brian Roberts to man second base and most likely Anna’s shot will be limited. Anna may be designated for assignment for all we know. But he also may not. If he is though… what does that mean? Nothing! Especially if you believe. Anna believes in himself. He’ll always have that fire and I appreciate that and you should too.
Life is full of obstacles. You can either walk away from the mountain, or you can climb it. I laugh at fans who think they have it all figured out. The ones that see 1 strikeout in an at-bat and scream, “The guy’s a bum.” I love this one, “He’s a full time minor leaguer, he doesn’t have a shot!” Are you serious? Baseball is a game of failure and life is full of challenges. We weren’t put on this earth to fail. We were put here to achieve. Everyone is an underdog, until they win… then they’re a champion. And let me also state something else… if you've never won that trophy, if you fall just alittle short but give it your all. If you push hard, but you didn’t get the gold, know this… you’ve won already… because you never gave up on yourself. In my eyes… that’s a champion. Desire, ability, love of the game, heart...and refusal to fail.
All apply champ! Never give up, ever and no one can ever knock you down.
I root for the believer, that’s me.

WHY EVEN JETER RIDES THE LIN-TRAIN
I’m not going to sit here and come up with fancy ways to work in Jeremy Lin’s name. I’m tired of it. I’m not tired of Jeremy Lin however and the excitement he’s brought to New York. Look, truth be told, ultimately I’m a baseball fan, a Yankee fan, but I follow all the New York teams… including the Mets because I’m a New Yorker. You can’t technically call me a New York Knicks fan because I don’t go to games and I don’t seek them out of television. Until I started too the past several days and it's been downright amazing. I mean, 2 nights ago with only seconds left Jeremy Lin brought Toronto to their feet and me in my living room to win big with a 3 pointer with seconds left.I have to say, New York sports is mad exciting and that’s one thing you can say about us New York fans, we’re electric. We're on a New York Giants high, we love our New York Yankees, and almost all of us believe the Lin-train is a truly fun ride… and apparently so does Derek Jeter.
On Lin, Jeter told the New York Daily News THIS:
“It’s always fun any time there’s a new guy, especially in New York, they tend to get pretty excited about it.”
He’s right and it goes way beyond Lin. It goes back to my piece from late last week titled WHY SEIZING THE MOMENT MAKES YOU NEW YORK'S DARLING. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it magical. New kids in New York bring an excitement like no other.
Lin… Kevin Maas from back in the day, and hey, what about Derek Jeter too? No one was more excited about Jeter than I was and this is the same type of hype for me now. The big moments, the new kid and all of New York behind them. You have to love this. So yes, while I’m not a basketball fan, I’m a New York fan and this is damn exciting. Ride it Lin, ride the wave until you can’t anymore, we’re all loving this…even Derek Jeter.

WHY SEIZING THE MOMENT MAKES YOU NEW YORK'S DARLING
Think about that for a second. It doesn't happen in New York too often but when it does happen, damn it's exciting. I think back to Kevin Maas a lot, even Shane Spencer once in a while.
These are guys that were thrown in the Yankee lineup and needed to deliver, they saw an opening and went for it and for that moment, New York immediately fell in love with them. Why? Because we weren't expecting much, but we got more than we expected. It's always exciting when it happens that way. Special moments that New York fans never forget. Remember when Ricky Ledee hit a Grand Slam in 1999 ALCS against the Boston Red Sox? (Read HERE.) I do, he did and many of you won't forget it either... it's a shining moment, something no one ever expected.
Enter Ivan Nova, Jeremy Lin and Victor Cruz. 3 guys that just needed a chance, they got a chance and they capitalized and hopefully they will for the long haul. New York fans immediately fell in love with them and what's not to love?Ivan Nova went 16-4 last season with a 3.70 ERA. He proved to all of New York he can pitch with the big boys.
Victor Cruz, a kid from Paterson New Jersey worked hard to make it to the NFL and did as a fourth receiver of the New York Giants. But when injury sidelined the Giants other receivers, he was given a chance and never looked back. Victor Cruz scored a touchdown in this years Super Bowl and is on top... a member of the World Champion New York Giants. It doesn't get much better than that.
Jeremy Lin was claimed off waivers from the Houston Rockets and suddenly Lin's a superstar for the New York Knicks. The Knicks needed a pick me up and they got one. There was a door opened and Lin entered and he's been dominating all week.It just goes to show...it's about seizing the moment and never letting go. Sometimes you capitalize and become legends, sometimes you don't, but it's a simple life lesson and everyone sees it in their lives at a certain moment. The question is, as nervous as you are when you see that opportunity... are you going to lasso it and take a chance, or are you going to take a pass and hope another one comes your way. Nova, Cruz and Lin took a chance and New York is rejoicing... I can't wait to see who's next.
